Strange Defrag error 0x80070057

Hello everyone,

I am observing a strange issue with defrag on Windows Server 2012 R2. There is a hardware RAID volume using deduplication in VDI mode and containing some virtual machines. Deduplication works okay, chkdsk shows no logical errors and RAID is consistent, but defrag reports error "0x80070057 The Parameter is Incorrect" after some minutes or even hours of runtime.

I've tried to search for such error but all I've found was about SSD that do not need defragmentation at all. I have also found an advice to set the CopyFileBufferedSynchronousIo to "1" but I am a bit unsure if it is safe in my case.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Here's a sample output of defrag (sorry for Cyrillic localization):

C:\>defrag d: -u -v

iSCSI drives regularly disconnect

Hello all

I have the following lab setup:

1 WS2012R2 DC

4 WS2012R2 (Core) nodes (20GB OS disk) with each 4x 50GB storage.

2 WS2012R2 (GUI) fileservers (60GB OS disk) with no additional local storage.

The two fileservers are clustered.
I am trying to connect all the node's local storage to the clustered fileservers using iSCSI. I made an iSCSI virtual disk for each physical disk. Having the fileservers connected to the nodes is no problem.

However, upon reboot of the entire setup only one of the four nodes automatically reconnects. On the surface there seems to be no difference between the four nodes, and after manual reconnecting the others everything is back to normal. This behaviour persists: every reboot only 1 node (always the same node) reconnects to the fileservers. I have then noticed the following in resmon after applying load to the cluster from a Windows 7 client:

Full image here
As you can see, there is a fundamental difference between the network connections to srv-wss-12 (which is the node that seems to automatically reconnect) and the three others.

My question is the following: What is so different, why is it like that and how do I fix it?

Kind regards

Daan

Event ID 55 - Corrupt File System - In Server 2012 too?

I'm wondering if anyone had experience with Event ID 55's in Server 2003 or 2008 and, if you found that in going to Server 2012 you no longer got those?

Network Share Error

I have a network share \\server\deploymentshare

Recently we started getting this error: refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted or that you are connected to the Internet or your network, and then try again. If it still cannot be located the information might have been moved to a different location."

I could not figure out the problem. if I map to the same location it works. If I change the share name (not the folder name) to \\server\deployment everything works fine.

If I create a new folder and share it as \\server\deploymentshare I get the same error.

Deduplication combined with differencing disks for better or not ?

We have a test hyper-V for various VMs. It is naturally easier for us to start from Parent disk which is sys prepped and move on.

On the other hand, deduplication(2012 R2) claims to be most effective on VHD library data.

Is the effectiveness of deduplication different when it comes to differencing VHDs as compared to other disks ?

Assuming it only works when VM is once off but then What is the algorithm ? and how much time it takes to de-dupe. What happens when the original old files (referenced chunks) are updated ?

DFS issues - High availability and File replication issues.

I've been having some issues with our DFS setups with both file replication with Roaming Profiles and with Folder Redirection. Also it appears that though I have 2 servers setup for replication (DC1 & DC0) if DC1 goes offline the DFS is not available even thought the files are replicated on to DC0.

First I'll start with the file replication errors. I've been having issues with NTUSER.DAT files being replicated. Since then I've disabled Offline file caching on the share since I read that can cause issues. Also there appears to be some errors with some files (8 files) that are in a users folder that is being redirected. Is there anyway to retry the replication of these files to see if the issue is gone? I've ran the DFS health report and the files are still showing up with errors.

Second, for the longest time we've had only one server in DFS. I wanted to make the DFS available if the server were to go offline so I added a second server to the DFS group. The first original server DC1 is windows 2003 R2 with iSCSI to our NAS. I since added another NAS and connected it with iSCSI to a second server, DC0 (win 2008r2). File replication is working in both directions aside from the few file errors I mentioned above. The problem is if the original server DC1 goes offline, DC0 doesn't serve the  DFS at the //domain.dom/dfs namespace as I would expect it would?

Is this a configuration issue?

Thank you!

Windows XP and Server 2012 R2

I have a new 2012 R2 Domain Controller and Exchange 2013 server running on Server 2012 R2. I have a few Windows XP clients that for some reason as of Monday cannot browse or access the file shares on the Domain Controller. However they can still access the shares on the Exchange server. SMBv1 appears to be enabled on the Domain Controller and the Windows Firewall is off so I do not know what the issue is. DNS is working and I can ping the server from the client without any issues. The Windows Vista/7 workstations can access the server without any issues.

Windows 2003 Web Sharing Share On list blank

As the title states, when trying to create a share from the Web Sharing tab on a folder, the Internet Information Services Share On: drop down box is blank.  IIS is running, there are sites running fine on the server.  WebDav is installed.  If you click the "Share this folder" radio option explorer.exe crashes and restarts.  I have a feeling it's because of the empty site list.  Any idea how to fix it?  Is the IIS Metadata file(s) corrupted and causing the problem?

Nics for a Hyper-V cluster

Hello!

http://alexappleton.net/post/44748523400/step-by-step-configuration-of-2-node-hyper-v-cluster-in

Each server has a total of 8 NIC’s and they will be used for the following:

1 – Dedicated for management of the nodes, and heartbeat
1 – Dedicated for Hyper-V live migration
2 – To connect to the shared storage appliance directly
4 - For virtual machine network connections

Tell me please whether I'm right or not:

1) 1 – Dedicated for management of the nodes, and heartbeat - it's not good: it's better to have a separate Nic decicated  for heartbeat and a NIc  dedicated for management.

2) I can use the same Nic(s) for the nodes management and for virtual machine network connections.

Thank you in advance,

Michael

Oracle 10g RAC running on Windows 2003 64bit SP2 , problem with Shared NTFS LUN by both nodes

We have a 3 pairs Oracle 10g RAC running on Window 2003 64bit SP2 and we have assigned a SAN  NTFS LUN as the G:\drive to each pair of  nodes. My issue is I can see and use the g:\drive lun for exports or write a file/folder without issue but when we write to the primary node that has the G:\drive lun we don't see the same written files/folders on the other node  same G:\drive Lun.

Is this a Windows server limitation or something I can do to get this working?

Thanks for any input

DFS-R Top level NTFS Permissions

$

Hi,

As part of my setup, I'm trying to implement a new DFS-R share between 2x Windows 2003 R2 and 1x 2008 R2 servers

I've been experimenting with the DFS-R, and I've found that if I try to change the NTFS partitions of the top-most folder, then these permissions are not replicated to the other duplicates on the other servers. Sub-file and sub-folder Perms are.

I've also found that if I do modify the top-level folder, than that server stops replicating to the others - with no errors in the event logs !  Disaster !!  In my testing, all I did was add another users read access, and then that stops replication!!

So - if I need to control the top-level perms, do they all have to be in sync and setup manually ?

External Hard Drives (and some flash drives) Not Recognized by Server2003

I recently purchased a new computer (Dell T100 server) and old Server2003 disk (OEM disk on eBay). Installed Server2003 and added File Server role only. My data is located on a Western Digital Passport that is recognized no problem on any other computer in the office (all XP). When I connect it to the server (front or rear, same result), it does not give it a drive letter, and says there are 0 bytes used 0 bytes free. Under Computer Management->Storage->Disk Management it shows: Volume: blank, Layout: Partition, Type: Basic, File System: blank, Status: Healthy. It's as if it does not know how to read the file system.
What do I need to do to Server2003 to get this drive with my data on it to be read by my new server?

Win 7 Client cannot access Win 2012 encrypted share even if RejectUnencryptedAccess is False

$

I enable either Global-level or Share-level encryption on Win 2012 and try to access the encrypted share from a Non-SMB3 client (Win 7). As we know, "RejectUnencryptedAccess"by default is TRUE in Win 2012. So any unencrypted access (ie, connection from Win 7 client) will be rejected with a STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED message in either Session Setup Response or Tree Connect Response based on whether Server-level encryption or Share-level encryption is enabled. There is no problem here, it works as expected.

But when "RejectUnencryptedAccess" is set to FALSE in Win 2012, as per the documentation, the connection should be established and share be accessed without any error or denial. But seems that is not the case with me.

Neither I get any Access Denied error nor the Share is opening.

On further looking at the SMB2 Packet capture, the Session Setup and Tree Connect Responses were successful. After that, there were several "Create Request File: wkssvc" and "Create Response File: wkssvc" packets.

Can someone confirm if this is the case / is it expected behavior / or am I missing something?

Windows Server 2012 R2 wouldn't response SMB Negotiate Protocol Request

Hello

I've got an windows 2012 r2 as a file server,  it worked fine with windows client but not with lunix-based client

I first discovered this problem on an Android phone:http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/b3a8a7f9-f4b7-4b9f-b586-2ec87fc14d71/cant-access-shared-folders-on-win-2012-r2-with-android-phone?forum=winserverPN

then I did some test on a newly installed lunix OS on a VM today, I found that my server do not response SMB Negotiate Protocol Request from my phone or the testing OS at all.

when I try smbclient -L ServerIP, I get

read_socket_with_timeout: timeout read. read error = Connection reset by peer.
Receiving SMB: Server stopped responding
protocol negotiation failed

the wireshark capture are like this:

Phantom retired disk also listed as available - with same friendly name

I recently had to mark a good disk as "Retired" in an attempt to get it ejected from a Storage Pool so that I could repair some Storage Pool issues on my server.

The strange thing is that now this disk appears to be listed twice with the same disk friendly name when I run "Get-PhysicalDisk" in PowerShell - once marked as "Retired," the second time as available for pooling. I can’t rename the retired instance, and I have no idea how I might remove it.

PowerShell output showing the Object ID's of the disk (other system disks removed from the output):

PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-PhysicalDisk | ft FriendlyName, ObjectId, BusType –auto

FriendlyName ObjectId BusType

PhysicalDisk9 {10e2b595-a097-11e3-943a-806e6f6e6963} RAID

I have tried setting a new friendly name on the retired disk using Set-PhysicalDisk, but this is the result:

PS C:\Windows\system32> Set-PhysicalDisk -UniqueId b1b3fc5e-ccd7-11e2-b1dc-806e6f6e6963 -NewFriendlyName OldPhysicalDisk

Set-PhysicalDisk : The requested object could not be found.

Is there anything else I can do to rename the phantom retired disk or -  preferably - remove it altogether? Note that it does not show up in Disk Manager or Server Manager.

DFS and ntfs permissions

$

On my 2008r2 server (server2) I have the following shares:

DFS Namespace share - Data, Local Path - C:\DFSRoots\Data

SMB Shared Folder - Data$, Local Path - D:\Data

For the DFS Namespace "domain.com\Data",

I have 2 DFS Namespace Servers as follows:

The above server with the shares, which shows the path \\server2\Data

Another Server at a remote site, which shows the path \\server3\Data

On the File System and Data$ share on server, for the D:\Data directory, there are no inherited permissions.

IF I look at the permissions on \\domain.com\Data, I see USERS are inherited from "Parent", with READ, EXECUTE, CREATE, etc.

This is obviously giving users rights where we do not want.

Should I just delete the DFS Namespace Server (server2), delete the DFS Share "Data", and then add back server2 as a namespace server with the path pointing to\\server2\Data$  ??

Offline Files & DFS Loopback Targets

$

Hi,

Problem:

Is a DFS target that evaluates to a local folder not a candidate for an offline files partnership, even if specified to be one via group policy?

Scenario:

There is a DFS namespace setup similar to "\\ Domain.Name\DFS" running on a Windows Server 2012 R2 domain controller.

Within that namespace, there are two folders: "\\ Domain.Name\DFS\User Folders" and "\\ Domain.Name\DFS\User Profiles". It may not be best practice, but currently these DFS folders target a volume local to a domain-joined Windows 8.1 Pro client: "\\ Client\Shares\User Folders" and "\\ Client\Shares\User Profiles", respectively.

To facilitate this, DFS loopback targets are enabled on the client, via: "EnableDfsLoopbackTargets" in "HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/Mup/Parameters". DFS itself works without issue.

A domain user has roaming profiles directed to "\\ Domain.Name\DFS\User Profiles\%username%". The same user has a home folder, "U", mapped to "\\ Domain.Name\DFS\User Folders\%username%". GPO is enabled for folder redirection to the DFS share's home folder.

Offline files are enabled on "\\ Domain.Name\DFS\User Folders\%username%", via GPO. Offline files are enabled on the client via the control panel.

When a domain user logs into the client, offline files shows no partnerships on the client, and the "Offline Files" tab is not present for any folder in the "U" mapping.

Offline files from other network shares, such as "\\ Server\Share\", can be added to the client without issue.

I've of course updated group policy, rebooted, reset the offline files cache, etc.

For a while, this was driving me insane. However, now I suspect this option is not available simply because the DFS share has resolved to a local folder, which is not a candidate for offline files, since it should always be available. This makes sense to me, but I would like it confirmed by someone!

Would a log be generated when a GPO-enforced offline file partnership fails? If so, where would I locate it?

Thanks,

Storport.sys BSOD on Windows Server 2012 R2

I recently purchased a Server that houses 45 4TB drives to use as my backup to disk solution. I installed Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard so that I could take advantage of Microsoft's Storage Spaces. I have configured the Storage Pool with Dual Parity with 3 hot spares. I have also updated every thing to the most current firmware, drivers and Windows Updates that I could find but I am still getting the BSOD. I am using Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R3 to backup my file server to this server. It will run for anywhere between 12 to 31 hours transferring 1.5 to 3TB and then my server will Blue Screen and every time it Blue Screens it says it is caused by the storport.sys Driver. I've found articles talking about the storport.sys driver causing nonpaged pool leaks but that was for Windows Server 2008 R2, I can't find anything for Windows Server 2012 R2. If you need additional information just let me know and I will provide it. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.
