I wonder if someone can point me in the right direction please. I have a Windows 2003 Server (32 bit) with a RAID 1 array (using SATA drives) for its system and data partitiions. Disk0 is the primary boot device, but is unfortunately showing errors. I have a new identical drive to replace it with. When booting Windows I ordinarily see two options, to boot from the primary disk or from the secondary disk. If I disconnect Disk0 however and attempt to boot, I see no options to boot from. What is the correct sequence of events that I need to perform to get this booting from the secondary disk so that I can then add the new drive?
I have tried disconnecting Disk0 and using the CD to boot to the recovery console. My plan was then to use FIXBOOT to make Drive1 the primary one, but recovery console does not see the drive, I don't even get an option to login to that installation. If I leave Disk0 connected and boot to the recovery console I am then able to login to either installation, but FIXBOOT doesn't solve my problem. I have read that I might need to use FIXMBR, but I see some worrying messages when I type this and I don't have the courage to continue without knowing more about what this might do.
I think fundamentally that I need to break the mirror, revert the partitions back to basic, boot from the secondary disk, add my blank drive, reconvert to dynamic and then re-add the mirrors. Is this correct? Can you please point me at some documentation that explains this process in more detail.
Kind regards
Alan
