DFS namespaces: mapped drives have no entries on Previous Versions tab

Hello --

I am having problems getting Shadow Copy to work correctly with a domain-based DFS namespace.

When mapping a drive letter to the DFS namespace, I can right-click on a folder, choose Properties and see the Previous Versions tab, but on the tab there are no entries listed.

But when I browse to the namespace using the UNC name, I can see entries under the Previous Versions tab.

When browsing to the actual share(s) where the DFS links are pointing, either via UNC or mapped drive letter, I can see entries in the Previous Entries tab.

Basically, I can't use shadow copy if I map a drive letter to the DFS namespace, but can use it if accessed thru a UNC path.  What the……?!?!

As I stated earlier, this is a domain-based DFS namespace.  For testing purposes, I created a test standalone DFS namespace on a server and configured a link to a folder.  This setup exhibits the same behavior; mapped drive has no entries on the Previous Versions tab, but UNC path does.

DCs are Windows Server 2003 R2, as are both root servers.  Clients are Windows XP SP2 and are bound to our Active Directory domain.  This occurs with the client getting referrals from either of two root servers.  There are no pertinent Event Viewer entries on the root servers.  I do not have access to the logs on the DCs (a different group admins them) so I don't know whether or not there are any related entries.  (I can probably find out if necessary.)  There is no error message presented on the client, only the lack of entries in the Previous Versions tab.

Shadow Copies are enabled on the drive where the DFS share(s) are located, as well as the drive(s) where the links point to.

I've run out of ideas at this point.  Can anyone nudge me in the right direction?

thx/Clay
