Hello All-
i am having an issue with moving files from one windows 2008 r2 file server to another windows 2008 file server. I am consulting with the clients in house IT staff on this project. the problem we are having is when a user tries to access data on the new file server they can only read, no editing or creating new files/folders.
what we did was after giving the domain admin full control over all the data files on the old server, louise, we could not move them to the new file server, fileserver. however, we could use fileserver to pull the files form louise to fileserver. (we opened ecplorer, navigated to the share drive on louise where the data is stored and copied it to the target directory in fileserver.
while in fileserver we can modify the files and create new files/folders. the same domain admin account logged into louise cannot create files/folders on file server from louise.
today i was out there and we stripped all existing permissions from the root directory down on the data copied to fileserver and assigned permissions. we want the users to be able to see but not modify the root directory and only be able to modify their own data and create new files/folders in their designated directory.
example. d:\userdata\bob
bob would not be able to change anything in the d: or userdata directories but bob would be able to create new files/folders in the bob directory.
when viewing the effective permissions the user should be able to do this but when we tested the user could only read and couldn't save to the directory.
from there i was stumped so i changed the permissions to mimic exactly the permissions on louise. still could only read. i then gave 'everyone' ful control over the d: and users directories and still the users could only read. from there i went back to the mimic setup.
i think the key to solving this problem is solving why we can pull files from fileserver to louise but we cannot copy files from louise to fileserver. im sure this is a permissions issue but im not sure where to look now
