Windows Server 2012 Legacy BIO, MBR, mirrored boot partition, "Windows does not automatically service the contents of the secondary system partition"?

Goal is to get primary disk mirror back in operation. BCDEdit doesn't think the system is EFI enabled and I think it correct. What tools and documents talk about WS2012 rather than 2008? DISKPART confirms that the drives are not GPT. So is it appropriate to reinitialize the newly installed replacement disk, make it GPT, add mirrored partitions and try to treat it like this is a EFI system?

Working on a off-premises Windows server 2012 machine (64 bit) that is set for legacy BIOS, the dual 2 TB drives were initialized MBR, OS installed on first disk, system partition was mirrored to second drive. Primary drive died and was replaced. Secondary drive was made the default boot target using msconfig.

I am unable to restore the primary drive to make it bootable. Bootcfg says it cannot find boot.ini, MSconig sees something, but I cannot look at details of what the entries are booting.

Somewhat scary is the document "Configuring Disk Mirroring for Windows Server 2008 R2" pulled from TechNet dated March 2010:

Windows does not automatically service the contents of the secondary system partition. If you install any operating system updates or service packs, be sure to manually update the secondary system partition (the mirror) with the same updates. To do this, be sure to follow Step 2 of the “Clone the system partition” procedure, where you use the Robocopy.exe command to copy the contents of the primary system partition to the secondary system partition.

Really?
