Difference between S.M.A.R.T. and chkdsk /r

I recently ran into an issue where a VM failed to start due to corruption on an iscsi pass through volume.  When the volumes were created only a "quick" format was used and it's possible there are bad sectors somewhere that caused the issue.

The volume is on a synology diskstation.  My question is, will a S.M.A.R.T.'s long /in depth scan also check for bad sectors and list them or is that something that can only be done with chkdsk /r ? S.M.A.R.T is ideal in that I can go disk by disk without downtime to the whole volume.  chkdsk needs to lock the volume which makes it unavailable and at 12TB I fully expect it to take more than a week.

Thanks in advance.
