DFS - Folder management and relocation of subfolders

Hello,

I have an environment with 3 2008 R2 DFS servers, they currently replicate a single name space.

The folder structure has become so deep that they are constantly running in to the 256 character limit.  As such we would like to not only shorten folder names but also move subfolders higher up in the tree.

Obviously renaming a folder is no big deal, however my concern comes with moving large subfolders and unintentionally forcing a full resync of the moved folder between all three sites.

Where should I initiate the move from?  Through a network share?  Through the DFSROOTS folder? Do I simply do a cut and paste of the folder?  I would like to assume that there is a right way to do this that will simply make DFS realize some of its data has moved and not bother with doing a full sync.

Example: \\domain.local\x drive contains 4 folders; folder1, folder2, folder3 and folder4.  Under folder1 I have another folder called folder1a, I want to move folder 1a into the root directory instead of being under folder1.

I don't want it to say "Folder1a is new to me and so is all of its data, let me sync this entire folder to both of my partners", I just want it to say "Folder1a has moved directories, let me sync the updated folder structure to my partners".

Is this possible?  I looked through the DFS management tool and it doesn't appear to give you any kind of manageability in this regard.
