Slow connection to Windows share if the server cannot resolve client's NetBIOS name (short hostname)

I have a question about slow smbclient connections to Windows shares. 

Is it necessary that the Windows Server be able to resolve the short hostname (NetBIOS name) of the client machine? I noticed without it the connection from smbclient is very slow.
