Hello,
I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise server that we are using for DPM.
It has three virtual disks running on 5 physical disks.
The disk array is as follows:
VD0 - Physical disk 1 - Raid 0 - Has Boot Volume (E:) and Windows Volume (C:)
VD1 - Physical disks 2-4 - Raid 5 - Has mulitple DPM volumes
VD2 - Physical disk 5 - Raid 0 - No partitions
My goal is the following:
- Copy Boot and Windows Volumes to virtual disk 2 and boot from this drive
- Remove volumes from virtual disk 0 and incorportate the physical drive into VD1
I have accomplished the cloning of the Boot and Windows Volumes, and marked the Boot Volume as "active" or "boot". I then powered off the server and unplugged the VD0/PD1 drive. I started the server and it finds the Boot Volume on VD2/PD5, but throws an error indicating (sorry, don't have exact message with me) that it can't boot properly.
My guess is that it has something to do with trying to locate the volume with the C: files on it, and the cloned Windows Volume does not "appear" to the server as the C: drive.
Questions:
- Is my assumption about the volume not being labled as C: correct?
- Can I use Setup/Repair and go to a command prompt and use BCDEDIT to either label the drive as C:, or to point the Boot Volume to the drive letter that is being used by the cloned Windows Volume?
- Would physically moving disk 5 to disk 1 make windows assign that volume drive letter C: and correct the issue?
- Finally, does the Boot Volume (currently drive letter E:) even need a drive letter? Can that be removed?
Thanks for any and all help.
