DFS change from a 2003 server to a 2008 causes home drive mapping failure.

All user accounts are configured to set h: as the home directory pointing to thier dfs location.

When drives are mapped by Active Directory or by script logic (driven by kixstart)  to map we see the "error 53" when the mappings fail. When the mapping are done manually from a command line they succeed every time.

Active Directory forest level is set at Windows 2003.  Ideas?

Configuring raid 1 using Dell Systems Build and Update Utility on Dell PowerEdge T410 in order to install windows server 2003, i get this error message:

I think that i can find a good answer on this forum today, that's an emergency for me.

Thank you.

I just migrated 400Gb of files from a WIn2008 file server to a brand new Win2012 file server.

After using robocopy to copy files and permissions, i changed the tree of folders  but some folders are innacessible.

C:\DADOS\ARQUIVOS\COMPARTILHADA\30 - DIVERSOS\z\POB ANUAL 2011>attrib
File not found - C:\DADOS\ARQUIVOS\COMPARTILHADA\30 - DIVERSOS\z\POB ANUAL 2011\*.*

POB OUTUBRO 2011: Access is denied.
Successfully processed 0 files; Failed processing 1 files

If i try to robocopy an empty folder, the errors are:

"Access is denied." and "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."

C:\DADOS\ARQUIVOS\COMPARTILHADA\30 - DIVERSOS\z\POB ANUAL 2010>attrib

file server needs to be replaced

thanks for the time.

I'm in a bit of a bind.  Need to replace our file server.  The concern is that it is part of a DFS service.  It is the root server.  I am guessing I cannot just go in and create a new file server and add it in.  My initial thought process was to shutdown the failing file server and bring up the second one with the same name.  But I am thinking that wont work.  Will using the File Server Migration toolkit work better? Also I want to keep the same root target name.  For example I have fileserver01 as the root DFS target for all the DFS shares. How do I go about keeping that?  Renaming fileserver02 to 01 will not work?

Thank you again.

DFS issues on Windows 2008 R2

I have 2 servers on a domain using DFS replication to copy files for our web application.  I'm running into a DFS problem and I have tried recreating and also reinstalling the services and still continue to get this error:

"A database problem is blocking replication on volume [x]"

There is plenty of space on both the OS drive and the data drive.  The contents is only about 4 GB and there's at least 15GB free on each drive.  There are no namespaces declared.  In the DFSR log, I continuously see:

Error:9027(0x2343) DownstreamTransport::EstablishSession downstreamtransport.cpp:4200 1356 C A failure was reported by the remote partner

Orphaned DFS Namespace - How to Remove

We have two test namespaces in our domain along with one production namespace.  The two test namespaces had just one namespace server (the hosting file server). That server went down, and we had to rebuild the DFS  configuration.  Now we are stuck with the two test namespaces which show up when we browse for adding namespaces in the DFS Mgmt display, but it gets an "RPC is unavailable" error when I try to explore it.  From a command prompt, running "dfscmd /view \\ourdomain.tld\DFS_Test" results in a "System error 1722 has occurred.  The RPC server is unavailable".  Yet I can query our production one as "dfscmd /view \\ourdomain.tld\DFS_Prod" and it properly shows the DFS folders, so it doesn't exactly sound like a service isn't started or such.

Any ideas?  I would be happy to simply delete these orphaned Namespaces if I could figure out how!  Thanks!

Hi,

I am looking for implementing DFSR 2012 infrastructure in my environment which is on Windows Server 2008 R2 Forest & Domain Functional Level.

Question: Does it require AD Forest & Domain Functional Level to be upgraded to Windows Server 2012 or DFSR 2012 new improvements can be utilised on Server 2008 R2 FFL/DFL.

Cheers

Problems with the File blocking feature

$

We all know the 'feature' in Windows which marks files as blocked when saved from for instance an internet location to the local disk. The file is marked as blocked as noted by the message "This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer".

There are ways of preventing this, by means of a GPO setting to force to skip this feature. This setting however works at the user level.

We came across this scenario:
Windows 2003 file server in a simple network environment, XP clients and a Windows 2003 Terminal Server. On the network a Document Scanner is attached, from which the people create PDF documents to be saved directly to a SMB path on the file server.
This PDF files are marked as blocked...

Does anyone have a solution as how to prevent this?

Windows server 2003 R2 X64 does not find a driver for Lacie c2 Quadra v2 USB connected

As the disk is plugged into the system the Server (2003 R3 x64) tries to find a driver for it but it does not. I have asked the manufacturer but they said that no driver is needed, so I should ask in this forum.

The hard-drive works correctly in Windows 7.

How can I use it with the Server?

DFS for Archiving

I want less expensive storage use for my older data.

And combine them whit my resend data.

For example server1\data\projects\2009 and older year whit read only.

Server2\data\projects\2010 and newer year whit read and write.

Combine to one DFS

\\networkname\data\projects\2008\...

\\networkname\data\projects\2009\...

\\networkname\data\projects\2010\...

\\networkname\data\projects\2011\...

I can a make a DFS to server2 whit al link to server1

But I can only make al link in the root of the DFS and I want it lower in the tree.

Is there a solution?

Can someone explain the numbers I'm seeing here, related to server 2012 Dedup?

$

On a 2012 Standard server, I have deduplication turned on for a data volume.  Several directories are set up as exclusions in dedup settings, so there are only 2 directories which should be getting deduplicated.  (And one of those is a running VM which should have been excluded, but looks like it got missed.)

The other directory targeted for dedup contains Veeam backup files of several Hyper-V VM's.  When I look at the properties of this volume (Drive D:), I see 0.98TB used, 1.28TB Free, with a capacity of 2.27TB.

If I select all of the folders on the drive except the 2 that are being deduplicated and pull up the properties window, it shows size: 24.4GB, and size on disk: 24.4GB.  Even the folder with the running VM shows both the size and size on disk as 45.0GB.

So far, those numbers make sense to me.  But when I pull up the properties of the "D:\Backups" folder, it shows Size: 1.38TB, and Size on disk: 36.7GB.  While I know server 2012 deduplication is good, those numbers don't seem right.  Then, going a step further, I pulled up properties of some individual files inside the D:\Backups directory.  The files in that directory vary in size, anywhere from 5GB to 600GB, but all show a size on disk of 4.00kb.  (Except the newest backup, which hasn't been through a dedup cycle yet, so it still shows the full size and size on disk as the same.)

Is it expected that all files which have been deduplicated would show a size on disk of just 4k?

What numbers should I believe when it comes to file sizes and disk utilization?  The file size numbers just don't add up, but are the used/free space numbers correct as shown in the volume properties?

Thanks!

DFSR design best practices: Discontiguous DFSR folders in the same replication group

$

I have setup a DFSR replication group as follows and was wanted to confirm this is inline with best practices:

  • I have 3 servers in the same branch office. Each has a different folder I want to replicate.
  • I have one "hub" server in a different office where I want to replicate all the folders to.
  • I setup one replication group between the 4 servers.
  • In the replication group each of the three branch office servers has a connection to the hub for only their respective folders
  • The folders the branch office servers are not replicating were left as not defined.

Is this OK? It seems to work great, but the only thing I was concerned about was the undefined folder connections. I haven't read anything saying you shouldn't do this and Windows hasn't logged any events telling me it doesn't like it.

Clients accessing files via DFS Namespace seeing long pauses....but not with NetBIOS type mappings

Hi All,

Been working on this for several weeks now and wondering if I've missed something basic.

Head Office with 3 Branch Offices

W2K8R2 servers as DC's in each office

Running

Domain Functional Level - Windows Server 2008 R2

Forest Functional Level - Windows Server 2003

I've had this problem SINCE introducing a second DC Windows Server 2012 at head office.

Users at head office experience long lag times to open files ONLY when WS2012 server is online.

I've created alternate login scripts using NetBIOS type mappings (\\Server\DFS) for those users afflicted with this issue

and that immediatley fixes the problem.

Since we don't use WINS I thought that the problem might be resolved by enabling the dfsdnsconfig

as per the following thread.

Enabling DFS to use Fully Qualified Names (FQDN)‎

I'd appreciate any comments or advice as I have little hair left.

thx.

Dedupe and BKF files

I'm currently backing up three 2003 Servers to a share on a backup Server (running 2003) with the NTbackup tool. I am considering upgrading the backup server to Windows 2012 and am interested in the De-duplication feature.   The server's do a full backup every night with each server writing its own bkf file on the backup server with each backup being appended to the existing bkf file.

I am curious as to whether the de-duplication feature would be able to bring about a storage saving for this scenario?

Share Permission fro Mac User

I have a user that uses a Mac and can connect/make new documents and files in a Windows share.  She accesses the share by using the AD username and password I created for her.  When she tries to rename a file in one of those shares she gets a permission denied error.  If I log into a Windows machine as the same user I have no problems renaming the same folder.
