How to avoid broken shares when ommitting the namespace folder?

$

0

I am currently learning DFS and I have some questions about some things I find really strange. But first an overview:

---------------

SOIL-DC1 (Server)

D:\Shares\Research (shared as \\SOIL-DC1\Research)
D:\Shares\Laboratory (shared as \\SOIL-DC1\Laboratory)

SOIL-DC2 (Server)

D:\Shares\Development (shared as \\SOIL-DC2\Development)

\\SNAKEOIL.LOCAL\Public (DFS-Namespace)

Research (targets to \\SOIL-DC1\Research)
Laboratory (targets to \\SOIL-DC1\Laboratory)
Development (targets to \\SOIL-DC1\Development)

---------------

What I find really strange is, that I can access the shares ommitting the namespace ("Public"). For example: \\SNAKEOIL.LOCAL\Research. However, that folder is shown as empty and I don't have permissions to add any files. The intended namespace \\SNAKEOIL.LOCAL\Public is working as expected.

Why is that and how can I avoid this strange behaviour?

Program For Logging Hard Disk Activity

$

Hey Everyone,

I am having an issue with a server in which the Hard disks keep failing, within the last year 3 of them have died.

I am in need of a program that can record logs of the hard drive activity overnight, a period of about 12 hours. This will help us track down at what time the issue is occuring, and then what is causing it. Something similar to the built-in windows hard disk monitor is task manager, but with the ability to record would be perfect. I have tried other programs but they log in text, and it would take hours of looking through the logs to find any abnormalities

Does anyone know of such a software?

Cannot add users to folder permissions

We have a file server (Server 2003 R2 member of a 2003R2 domain) on which I can no longer add users to folder security permissions. When I try to enter a username and click check name it says they can't be found and if I click on locations the AD tree below the domain name won't expand - I just get the domain name and the + box disappears as below.

On the server in Admin Tools ADUC would not work either so I uninstalled and now can't re-install...

I am able to add permissions to files and folders on the server remotely, i.e. browse to the admin share for the relevant drive on the server from my desktop PC and find the file / folder and add permissions that way. After doing this the permissions appear on the server, but I can't add them directly?!?

I'd considered removing the server from the domain and re-adding but the server has a number of user and application shares which would be lost, but I'm concerned it might stop working altogether.

I've tried SFC /Scannow but don't have the install disks (as I wasn't left them but those who I took over from).

I'd be grateful of some diagnostic help / suggestions to fix the issue

Thanks

Why are the files created from application in windows 2008 without any file owner?

I notice that whenever my java program is moving files to a folder, there is no owner assigned to that file. How is that possible? Now I am not able to move that file to some other folder except delete.

Any way to assign ownership to the file before moving the file itself.

Thanks in advance.

DC source time is another DC instead of PDC

Hi,

I check the source time of 4-5 DC and maybe just synch with PDC. Must of them synch with other DC instead of PDC.

I check the registry setting of all and they have:NT5DS , only PDC have: NTP

Why is that? Resynch or restart Windows Times don't help. What is the reason or the process that push them to see another DC?

About File Name Issue by Robocopy

Please kindly help as follows:

Due to I need to migrate the Data from Novell to Windows 2008 R2, I have some issue about robocopy.

My existing file include some long file / folder name and long file path. (More than 256 / 260 characters)

When I try to use robocopy copy the files, some of them show error and mentioned that it cannot locate the files. All of them are long file name.

I have tried to use "/256" and result is negative.

Meanwhile, I do not want to shorten the file / folder name or path.

If I would like to retain the same file / folder name and path, any suggestion?

Thank you!

[Forum FAQ] How to map a drive to a domain name

$

Symptom

There is a shared folder (Share) on a DC of contoso.com. If you access the shared folder using the path\\contoso.com\Share, you will find the shared folder is empty. If you try to create a new folder in \\contoso.com\Share, you will get an error“Could not find this item. This is no longer located in contoso.com. Verify the item's location and try again”. (Figure 1)

Figure 1

However, you can create a new folder in\\Controller\Share or\\Controller.contoso.com\Share without issue (Controller is the server name). The NETLOGON and SYSVOL shares are not subject to this error.

Cause

Mapping a drive to the domain name is reserved for DFS. The SMB client will connect to IPC$ and get a list of DFS namespaces. If DFS has not been setup there is nothing to refer, thus the blank“folder.”

When using the controller name, either short or FQDN, it establishes a normal SMB share connection. This is why you can create folders through explorer.

Solution

You must create folders/share on the DFS root through the DFS Management tool, or via CMD/PowerShell. You cannot achieve this via Windows Explorer.

Please refer to Figure 2 and Figure 3, create a DFS domain-namespace namedShare, then you can create a new folder in \\contoso.com\Share.

Windows 2008 Alignment of Drivers less than 4GB

Guys, why does Windows 2008/2008R2 align drives that are less than 4Gb to 65536 and all drives larger than 4GB to the 1MB boundary (1048576)? It's not uncommon on virtual machines to present small drives for holding logs etc. Also common when using SANS. I'm wondering what the decision process was behind this? I understand of course the reason to align to a 4K boundary due to modern driver sector size.

Ricoh Aficio MP C2051 Scan to Folder - Windows Server 2012 Error: Authentication with the destination has failed check settings

I have recently upgraded a clients servers to Windows Server 2012 & since doing so have lost the ability to scan to folder.

Both servers are domain controllers and previously on a 2008 domain controller I would have had to make the following change to allow scan to folder:
 Administrative Tools
 Server Manager
 Features
 Group Policy Manager
 Forest: ...
 Default Domain Policy
Computer configuration
 Policies
 Windows Settings
 Security Settings
 Local Policies
 Security Options
Microsoft Network Server: Digitally Sign Communications (Always)
 - Define This Policy
 - Disabled

However I have applied this to the Windows 2012 server but am still unable to scan, possibly due to added layers of security in server 2012. The error on the scanner is Authentication with the destination has failed check settings.
I have also tried the following at the server:
Policies -> Security Policies
Change Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level to: Send LM & NTLM - Use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated.
Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) clients and uncheck the require 128 bit.
Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) servers and uncheck the require 128 bit
I have created a user account on the server for the ricoh and set this in the settiings of the Ricoh and verified everything is correct.

Are there any other things I have missed?

Migrating from Win2008 --> WIn2012R2 - Robocopy /mir /secfix - Error 0x080070570

I did a migration using a robocopy, to copy files and permissions to a new file server. More than 1 million of files, 800 GB of data

A´ve enabled data deduplication, with a 35% ratio.

All permissions are OK, but...

no one can open any files, MS Office files  even PDF files

But regular text files and XML files are OK, i can be read by notepad/IE

CHKDSK shows no errors, it´s a PE R720, all drivers and firmwares updated

But the properties of the volume, shows only 17GB of files stored.

It´s a NTFS volume in a VM, hosted on a WIn2012R2, with RefS and the other 2 Vms are OK

Report\View DFS Referrals?

Hi,

Working on a large scale file data migration.  Users will be moving to accessing all file shares via (2008 R2) DFS.

We would very much like to be able to see details of the DFS referrals being made?  Ideally including usernames (and target).
This is so we can ensure that users are accessing their migrated file shares the 'correct' way and won't loose access whenclassic (UNC shares) they are used to are turned off (replaced by new hidden shares for DFS to point to).
We can monitor connections to the old shares, but would very much like a belt & braces approach where we look forcorrect (via DFS) connections too.

Is it possible to get anything like information?

I have spent several hours searching and reading online and I haven't seen anything that seems to discuss this.
 - DFSUtil tool can provide a lot of information, but nothing around this is seems
 - Not found a Windows Evenlog with the info
 - DFS debug log doesn't appear to contain anything like this

Any insight or pointers appreciated.  Thanking you in advance.

Andrew

Folder permission reset and missing folders or files

$

This issue only occurs once per month on an estimate.

When we come in to office in the morning, we will discover our folders permission has been reset and some files are missing.

When we use the restore previous version, we can still find the files or folders in the last SECOND version. The last version will shows some files missing. Usually the last version is after office hours. Is there any possible cause to this issue for example

DFS services, VSS services, etc?

We also found out, if there is a wrongly moved folder e.g c:\123 has been moved to c:\anotherfolder\123, the latest copy will also reflect the wrongly moved folder, e.g. c:\anotherfolder\123 instead of c:\123 (which is right)

This is just like as if the parent folder has been restored to a certain date by an unknown program.

Thank you

Which kind of permission will lost after re-build Windows OS

$

Dear professional guys :

I have to rebuild my File Server (Win2008R2) because of hardware issues.    But I am not sure which kind of permission will lost after re-build it.

This server only have 1 share folder named 'sharefile' and its share permission is simple (only domain user can read) but we had deployed its NTFS permission before.   I know we can backup its ntfs permission by icacls (it is really a great tool).  But I just confused which kind of permission will lost ??   Whether domain user permission will be kept as before ?

I don't think NTFS permission information was saved in OS, it seems saved in file/folder properties.

Do you have any good opinion ?

I searched many docs and books but really can't find any useful information.

Thanks in advance.

Storage Spaces - volume with deduplication always flagged as "online filesystem check needed"

$

Hi,

I am using Storage Pools and we have quite some Volumes on them.

I am noticing an warning to do an online check of a Volume on 2 volumes where dedup is activated.

If I do the check, all is fine for about 10-30 minutes, and it's flagged again to be checked. It never sais it needs any repair.

The odd thing is, other volumes without DEDUP don't show this behaviour.
What could cause this error?

- Disk Space is enough available.

- Logs don't tell a lot. We have quite some entries with low disc space, but as there are volumes with DPM on this machine, it's referencing DPM Volumes with low disc space warnings. (Info - no DEDUP activated on DPM Volumes as it's not supported).

So basically why are deduped volumes (successful deduped with over 40 %), always in a state that needs a check?

Thanks

Patrick

Replace a 2003 (not R2) File Server with a 2012R2 files server and preferably keep the same machine name and IP when finished

$

I am wanting to replace a 2003 (not R2) File Server with a 2012R2 file server and preferably keep the same machine name and IP when finished.  For the moment I just need some "high level" guidance, little details can be worked out once I know which direction I will go.  I was considering that DFS might be a way to help get through the process although when finished the 2012R2 Files server will be by itself with no other file server planned at this time.  DFS can stay installed for maybe future purposes but clearly I wouldn't need the DFS Replication with only one machine.

Here's a few details of the environment....

1.  DC's are 2012R2 but it is still 2003 DFL because the old 2003 DCs are still present.  But likely they will be gone and the DFL elevated before I start on the File Server project

2. Nearly all machines in the facility have a shortcut on the "All Users" Desktop that points to the existing old File Server.  Editing or replacing that shortcut would be a major pain,...hence why I want to keep the same machine name at least, and maybe the same IP if not too much trouble.  This way the existing shortcut would continue to work with the new 2012R2 File Server.  The UNC path represented in that shortcut is also configured into one or more of our major business applications, futher emphasizing the need to keep the UNC path the same throughout the process.

3. The facility runs 24/7/365 but is "light" on weekends.  The political environment is such that there is little to no tolerance for any down time at all.

4. Would DFS (based from the 2012R2 machine) be a good tool to get where I need to go?

Thanks for any suggestions.

File Server Resource Manager - create a customized File Management Task

$

Hello everybody!

I have experienced some troubles with the FSRM and customizing File Management Tasks under Windows Server 2012. I hope someone could assist me in this matter.

I found this Technet blog some time ago and my actions were based on it:http://blogs.technet.com/b/filecab/archive/2009/05/11/customizing-file-management-tasks.aspx

However, it doesn't want to work out quite how i want yet.

I would like to explain my situation first. We would like to archive our File Server, every file that hasn't been accessed for over 4 years should be moved to a different location. The folder structure as well as the permissions should be kept like they were on the file server (the only exception would be that write right on those files would/should be removed, because we don't want people to edit or delete archived files). We realized that this is not quite realizable with a normal file management task (with choosing "file expiration" in the action drop down). That's why we decided to make a script by ourselves and choose "customize" in the action drop down of the file management task in FSRM.

The problem we do have now is that the script doesn't get executed, we basically did the same thing like we were told to in that Technet blog without any success.

First of all we created an easy script in order to make sure our customized file management task works like it should. For that we just wanted to create a log file with the Source File Path of the work-related file, which is about to get archived in the task. The "%1" stands for the parameter [Source File Path]. The script looks like that:

echo %1 > C:\Users\Username\Desktop\log.txt
exit

I have attached a screenshot of the customized file management task as well:

Okay so far so good. If I run the file management task now, it somehow ends up in an endless loop, it doesn't do anything and it doesn't finish either. FSRM created a log file though. If I look at it I can see that every single file that matched the condition of last accessed 4 years ago, ended up in an error:

"Unable to run command: C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe C:\Windows\System32\test.cmd [Source File Path]. 0x80045367, the file management action command timed out."

I have tried several ways of customizing the task already (absolute path, no absolute path, script file endings cmd or bat) nothing changed the result... Furthermore the script i am providing to test this customized task is fairly easy and working. So my assumption is that FSRM doesn't even execute the script?

I don't know where the error could be and i would really appreciate your help in form of troubleshooting or other suggestions/solutions how to achieve our goal.

Thank you!

Dario
