Saved file in Excel always saves to "network shortcuts" location

I have a problem that I am having an issue resolving. Each time a user is trying to save a file to their home folder with Excel, it wants to save to “Network Shortcuts” folder.  As an example, if you click Save As to save a file and select a folder, it appears within Network Shortcuts. I have checked the following: Offline sync is enabled, the save settings are at default for Excel, and the user has exclusive rights to their home folder. Any help would be appreciated.

Distributed File System Replication between servers with different performance

If Distrubuted File System Replication is set between servers with different performance. What will happen with the performance of the fastest server? Will the performance decrease to match the performance of the slowest server in the chain?

2012 R2 DFS-R stops replicating content between members when folder permissions changed

$

Hello,

Since upgrading our DFS member servers (one is a physical DC, other is a VM dedicated to DFS role only) to 2012 R2 I keep getting caught in a weird replication problem. I finally found out when the problem starts, it's the change of Folder access permissions, e.g. removing or adding a user account or group and I don't get it why exactly contents of such folder end up completely mismatched between DFS member servers.

To start from beginning, an example

Both DFS servers have a dedicated NTFS volume Y: with only 1 folder in it named Folder1 which is shared and added as Folder target on both DFS member servers. Replication group exists for that Folder1 and data is in perfect sync. New/altered content is properly replicated to other members server in no time (<1s), everything works perfectly well.

Now, Folder 1 contains a dozen sub-folders with permission inheritance enabled, data de-duplication is enabled as well as FSRM file screening to avoid temporary files, thumbs.db and other junk of that sort. Let's say Subfolder1 requires admin to change permissions so certain group of users get a read-only access to files stored inside while others can retain modification permission to put new files or so.

The moment I do that change it triggers a problem with DFS-R and I end up with proper copy of that sub-folder on DFS1 (physical server acting as DC) and maybe around 5-10% of content on DFS2 ... why is that so that a simple permission change operation breaks the DFS-R every time? When that happens the DFS2 never gets those missing files, just like it didn't know it should have those.

DFS Health Report shows file count mismatch and regular File Sharing Violations from some opened files, but there is no mention of why the darn DFS2 is missing 90% of files in certain sub-folders ... it's so annoying ...

I found only 1 workaround for this problem so far, that is to manually pull out all files from affected sub-folder and get them out of shared Folder1 (simple cut and paste to new temporary folder on same volume works) on DFS1, so DFS2 clears that problematic Subfolder1, and then manually dropping the files back in place on DFS1, later all is good on both servers ... pretty weird if you ask me.

I don't recall seeing this problem on "slow" 2008 R2 DFS-R ... Also I tested if maybe FSRM screening rules or data de-duplication has anything to do with problem, but they don't.

Does anybody else see this behavior between 2012 R2 DFS members?

Ricoh Aficio MP C2051 Scan to Folder - Windows Server 2012 Error: Authentication with the destination has failed check settings

I have recently upgraded a clients servers to Windows Server 2012 & since doing so have lost the ability to scan to folder.

Both servers are domain controllers and previously on a 2008 domain controller I would have had to make the following change to allow scan to folder:
 Administrative Tools
 Server Manager
 Features
 Group Policy Manager
 Forest: ...
 Default Domain Policy
Computer configuration
 Policies
 Windows Settings
 Security Settings
 Local Policies
 Security Options
Microsoft Network Server: Digitally Sign Communications (Always)
 - Define This Policy
 - Disabled

However I have applied this to the Windows 2012 server but am still unable to scan, possibly due to added layers of security in server 2012. The error on the scanner is Authentication with the destination has failed check settings.
I have also tried the following at the server:
Policies -> Security Policies
Change Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level to: Send LM & NTLM - Use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated.
Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) clients and uncheck the require 128 bit.
Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) servers and uncheck the require 128 bit
I have created a user account on the server for the ricoh and set this in the settiings of the Ricoh and verified everything is correct.

Are there any other things I have missed?

Storage Space 2012 R2 CPU / Memory requirement

How much impact would does CPU core density has with Storage Space 2012 R2?  Given the option of dual socket 5500 series quad core vs dual socket 5600 series hex core for a SMB environment (attach up to maximum of 2 x 24 JBOD), would there be any significant performance improvement?  Dedup feature would be enable, at least on some virtual disk, along with SSD storage tiering.

implementing DFS between windows server 2008 R2 and windows server 2012 R2

Hi,

We have a file server running on windows server 2008 R2. Now we are planning to implement DFS and move all data on the file server to a new windows server 2012 R2.

i thought of doing this by adding DFS role on the server1 and adding the replicating partner as server2 and after all the replication occurs, decommission server1.

Both are in a domain environment. Domain forest level and forest functional level are windows server 2008 R2. Would there be any issues by doing the above.

Please suggest

I am planning to copy all the share folders along with data to the new server ( server2) and decommission the old one (server1)

The other server is also on the same domain as server1. i want to use robocopy as it would copy with permissions.( so that i don't have to recreate the permission levels for the share folders in the new server)

Source : 10.0.90.12\D:\Share  ( share folder has many subfolders and files)

Destination : it's also the same D drive .Have to create the same shares ( folder names). \\10.0.90.18\D:\Share

What command do i need to use ?

Please suggest

The DFS Namespaces service keeps initialising every 30 minutes

Hi Everyone,

We have recently built a Windows Server 2012 R2 server and installed the File Services role with just the DFS Namespace and DFS Replication features. Although everything looks to be working fine, I am a little concerned why we keep getting the following repeating message, I see no indication that the service is crashing or failing but every 30 minutes we get the following information alert in the system.

The DFS Namespaces service has successfully initialized the shared folder that hosts the namespace root. Shared folder: ournamespace

The server also has the AD DS, DNS & DHCP roles installed as well, all operating fine. The server is patched up to within the past few months as well.

Cheers,
Leigh

Hi Guys,

I have file server which is completely in a bad state in terms of permissions, Even domain admin does not have access to the folders or shares due to permissions issues.

Please can you help me how I can migrate the server to the new environment with brand new folder structure and permissions but matter of fact that we need the existing permissions export.

Any help would be ideal.

Kind Regards,

Windows Server 2012 R2 - Drive Redirection Not displaying full list of Files

$

Hi Guys,

We have recently deployed a remote app via windows server 2012 r2, we have set it to redirect drives which look like a really good feature.

But when the users go into the redirected drives through the remote app not all the files are displayed it only displays around 50 files but there is actually around 700 files in the folder. It seems to be happening on a number of the redirected drives but if you map the drive on the server then there is no issue, but this fix doesn't really solve the problem as we have over 100 users using multiple drives. So would mean us having to go round every PC and mapping multiple drives for each user which could be very time consuming.

I'm really stumped on this one, would really appreciate any advise.

Thanks

We have problems - file open sometimes slow. Fileserver isWindows 2012 R2 (all updates) and Window 7 clients. The  Fileservers are virtual and running von VMWare vShpere 5.1. (paravirtual, vmxnet3 NICs) On the fileserver is no bottleneck CPU, RAM, NIC, DISC, TCP-Connections visable. Performance Reports are alway green, system resports are alway green. On some volumes dedublication ist enabled but this issueoccurson all volumes. Nothing interessting to see in the eventlogs.

The issue lookfollows: A useropen a filethat takes long time.Another useropensother files and has no problem at the same time! Especiallyfilesare affected thatotherusers have in accessat that time. This affects allFiles(from simple textfilestoExcel,Word,... )

The followingthingshave beentriedwithoutsuccess:
- install the system again with default smb settings (without AV, ... )
- disable SMBv2 on Client side
- stop backup software
- move the disc files of the VM (Fileserver) to an other storage system
- move the VM to an other host
- and settings from the performance tuning guide

Does anyone have suggestions
how to geta solution?

Connect Windows 95 to Windows Server 2008 R2 Share

Hello there,

we have multiple Win95 / Win 98 machines still running, used for CNC machines. There cannot be upgraded.

Is there a step by step manual how to enable these machines to connect to a share on our SBS 2011 server? The Win95+98 machines are not joined in the domain, just in a workgroup.

Thanks in advance, Marcus

Hi All,

My .bkf file corrupted due to power failure, and now i bought SysTools BKF Repair to retrieve the data from .bkf files. Theare are a few catalogs, say Catalog 1 and Catalog 2, in the corrupted .bkf files, and for some unknown reason the SysTools always loads the same catalog (Catalog 1), but really i want to load Catalog 2, so i deleted the Catalog 1 in the corrupted .bkf file, however SysTools is still loading up Catalog 1 even i deleted it in the .bkf file.

Hi,

Old client: Windows Server 2003 SP2

New client: Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

File server: Windows Server 2012 R2 with 2014 November Rollup

Copying a folder with a large number of files from a file share using Windows Server 2003 is about twice as fast than copying the same folder from the same file server using Windows Server 2008 R2. Robocopy statistics:

Windows Server 2003:

I found some tips suggesting to disable SMB Signing on the Windows Server 2008 R2 client, but that didn`t make any difference (I modified the local security policy, not the Default Domain Policy as suggested in the article I found).

Any ideas why there is such a huge difference?

An application accessing the file share is behaving much slower on Windows Server 2008 R2 compared to Windows Server 2003 due to this issue.
