Can't extend NTFS volume

$

Hello,

I can't figure out why I can't extend an NTFS volume sitting on an iSCSI LUN.  The 'extend volume' option is greyed out, as shown in the following screenshot.

OS: Windows Server 2008 R2

Please help?

Potential Disc error - "Volume Bitmap is Incorrect"

When SQL Server and file share backups begun failing on a Windows 2008 SQL server I started investigating. There were also SQL Analysis server issues which our Sage support provider claims to have dealt with.

The Proliant ML360 G6 seems to be operating normally apart from the backups - which verify as corrupt in the case of SQL, and fail on the backup of a share because "directory not found" when it's actually there and the data is good.

HP Array Diagnostics show no problem. The lights on the server indicate that there's an issue with bay 1 and 2 which is not the same drive but rather the C drive.

So I'm in a position of not being able to back up the data to tape and not having much to go on with fault diagnostics.

Using robocopy with out the /MIR switch.  Approx 6TB, manually recreated shares.  1000s of files are being skipped, assume it it because users are online.  Prior to go live, plan was to close all sessions and files and do one last robocopy.

What is the easiest way to prevent people from connections be re-established.

robocopy switches are

robocopy "<source>" "<destination>" /E /SEC /COPYALL /V /NP /NFL /NDL /MT:32 /Z /TEE /R:30 /W:10 /LOG:E\log.txt

Files on 2012 Storage Spaces unreadable after reinstalling OS

Hi there,

I have a test setup running HyperV Server 2012.  There are three physical disks, one for the HyperV installation and the other two set up as a storage pool with various virtual disks.

Deciding to have a fresh start, I removed all but one of the virtual disks and reinstalled HyperV server.  After the installation finished I have attached the virtual disk and marked it as read/write and it all appears fine, however whenever I try to access any file larger than a few kb it fails.

Small files work fine, but anything larger gives a "The file cannot be accessed by the system" error

Any ideas on how to resolve this would be greatly appreciated.

Where is the documentation for selecting type of iSCSI virtual drive when installing iSCSI Target Server (R2 Preview)

$

I'm planning to try guest clustering in my lab with R2 Preview.    I thought an iSCSI failover cluster of hosts would probably be necessary, and apparently iSCSI block storage is a good solution (without having an actual SAN available ).

I'm searching for info (if anyone can post a couple of URLs) on selecting the type of virtual iSCSI drives, since it's taking my quad core Phenom II 3.0 GHZ server with internal 1.0 TB SATA II drive and 4 GB RAM about 1 min. / GB to "clear" the iSCSI virtual drive.  The 1 GB quorum took only 1 min., but the 998 GB VM virtual iSCSI drive is taking 998 minutes....so wanted to know if selecting dynamic disk would be a better choice.

This is a test lab, not production, using desktops with R2 Preview.........Thanks for any answers!

Difference in storage benchmark resuIts: iometer vs. SQLIO

$

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone could explain a difference in benchmark numbers between iometer and SQLIO.

To set this question up:

I'm trying to get baseline performance for a new SAN installation, and have been testing with SQLIO for a particular workload: Random 8kB to 32kB file access (10:1 read:write) against a fileshare containing millions of these small files. The numbers were looking pretty good, example: 8k-read-random, 8-threads, 8 outstanding requests, hwbuffer, 120sec resulted in 100k IOPS.

A colleague suggested using iometer to confirm results, but when I configure iometer for same io profile and test params, I get lower figures. So for the example above, I get about 60k IOPS in iometer.

The physical disk performance counters match up with during SQLIO and iometer tests, so I am confident that the results produced by each are valid. I'm looking at average request size (to confirm size of io request), disk transfers per second, amongst others.

I'm just not sure why there is such a disparity... To be specific, I can see 100k disk requests/sec in perfmon, 100k IOPS in the SQLIO results output, and 100k IOPS in the storage vendor's separate reporting tool. I've double checked configuration parameters between the two, and played with iometer values (like queue size or worker count) to see if I could coax greater numbers out of it. Haven't been able to yet.

Who to believe? Is iometer less capable of pushing IO, or is it the more accurate one? Hard to see SQLIO not being "accurate" since Microsoft's teams use it themselves.

Thanks!

BSOD due to access violation in dfsc

Our new (not yet production) file server (W2k12) crashed last night due to an access violation in dfsc.sys. Afaik it happened the first time, but I am not totally sure. I also was unable to find out whether this is a common problem with a known fix. Windbg output is:

File Server Resource Manager - Unable to email

Hi,

I have a 2012 cluster. On this FSRM is running. When I goto test the email funtionality I get the eventID 12306

Error: IFsrmEmailExternal::SendMail, 0x8004531c,
The SMTP server requires a secure connection or the client was not authenticated.
The server response was: 5.7.1 Client was not authenticated

So I did this on the hubtransport server

Add-Adpermission -Identity "backup" -user "Domain\Clusternode1$" -extendedrights "Send-as"

This went through without error.

Tested it again and it failed again.

Is there something I did wrong?

File Server Resource Manager (FSRM) E-mail Notification Validation

$

It appears that my only choice to configure notification server for Server 2008 R2 is "Browse" followed by an AD-search. Why the validation in Server 2008? Server 2003 took any valid SMTP server. What if my SMTP server is not a MS server? What if it's in another non-trusted domain or forest? This is a hinderance in updating our server best practices. Ultimately if I cannot configure it for a non-MS server the reporting in FSRM will be lost, a big step backward for the 100s of servers in our enterprise. I see a command line solution in TechNet for SharePoint 2010, but cannot find similar powershell, etc. for FSRM. Any help appreciated.

Changing drives on all computers

In our office, we are replacing our old server with a new one.  The major problem we have is that all user's K and L drives are connected to folders in the old server.  It is very important that we reconnect everyone's K and L drives to the corresponding folders in the new server.  Is there any way we can do that short of manually reconnecting every user's drives?

Command to clear "Backlogged Sending Transactions" on DFS member

$

Hi,

I am assisting a customer with a DFS namespace consisting of 2 members.  Initially a replication group was set up to replicate data between both members.  Due to an issue where one server was overwriting the other with older data, replication from that server was disabled.  They are looking to re-enable replication again from that server but when I ran a diag report, there are almost 3000 files in  Backlogged Sending Transactions, which doesn't surprise me based on the recent events, but we don't want these backlogged files to replicate back to the other member as this other server has been the one that users have been accessing exclusively and we don't want any of the backlogged files to overwrite what is currently being accessed.

Is there a way/command to purge this backlogged data?

Thank you.

FTP Server Problem IIS8

First of all Hello from Georgia (east Europe) Smile

And now about my question. I have Windows server 2012 and have FTP server. I used this tutorial and everything is very clear to understand:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831655.aspx

So and now what is my problem. Me and my friend have one router. my friend already have Linux server and server Ip address is 192.168.1.100 port range: 1-1000. My server Ip address is 192.168.1.99 and port range: 1001-1100. As i said I installed ftp server and everything works fine in local lan. for example: ftp://192.168.1.99:1050 and I can enter here using username and password which i have or guest user but i can't use my ISP(external IP) ip address and this ftp port 1050 which I assigned my ftp server. for example 95.XX.104.XX:1050. browser loading and after this page not found. This port ranges are open in router and works in local lan as i said. My problem is that i cant change ftp port from 20/21 to for example 1500/1501.

Also at this moment windows server firewall is disabled so this isn't a problem. I thin I must enter new ftp port somewhere to make working. I can't use port 20,21 so any idea how replace this default ftp ports with my new ports which i have in router. range 1001:1100

Thanks

DFSr Lost recent files

Hello,

I have 2 servers, CORE and Remote. Initially DFSr was set up with Remote as Primary.

Replication was working fine, and all was good. It was never revisited, until recently when 158871 backlog FROM CORE to Remote and unfortunately an unknow FROM REMOTE to CORE.

When I looged over 80K backlog from REMOTE to CORE.

All Backups done at CORE.

Admin ran Dfsradmin membership set /rgname:lga /rfname:LGA /memname:REMOTE /isprimary:true

And restarted DFSr.

All content from 20121005 - 20130701 is missing from REMOTE.

Have checked Conflict and Deleted, Deleted, data is not to be found. Since REMOTE was Primary would not that date replicate UP to CORE? Is there any place or replay I can use to restore the missing data?

Any and All recommendations thoughts ideas welcome.

Thanks, Carlos

DFSR: Is it ok to empty the PreExisting folders after initial sync is complete and data is verified?

$

We have pre-seeded hundreds of GB of data on our hub server, and several GB of data ended up in the 'PreExisting' folder for each replicated folder.  Initial sync is complete for all of them and I want to verify it's ok to completely remove the contents of the Preexisting folder (leaving the Preexisting folder there, of course).  Also, I did try deleting one folder from it and explorer doesn't seem to respond.  Perhaps it's just a resource issue on a very busy DFSR hub server?  Is there a WMI method for pruning the Preexisting contents like there is for the conflictanddeleted folders?

Disk size and free space

My question is how to interpret the values of disk space and free disk space that Windows reports. When I look in volume properties I'm getting some values in GB but when I check in Disk Management window the values in GB don't match. What is the reason for that and which of these values are true/closer to true?

Basic IIS & dbase website query?

I have a new client whose web dev used MS-SQL and .NET to create their site...works fine.

But I need to add a blog now to same - and the web dev is asking for a whole bunch of $ - plus they've stated that WP will not run on a MS server...which I know of course to be untrue as I run more than a dozen other clients on one of our w2k3 servers just fine (php & mySQL were installed too).

So my question is should I "move" the client over to my own server and now host it on my own - even tho I'm not really adept at .NET builds....being a classic ASP guy still? And if that's the way to go - what do i need to ask the web dev "for" to make that move?

Any help/counsel here would be great....

Hi experts,

I am testing MS iSCSI target and I have setup iSCSI target in Windows server 2012 locally successfully. However, when I try to connect from another server using IP address, I already get the error:  "No Targets available for Login using Quick Connect.". I open all ports in firewall but the problem persists. How do I troubleshoot this error message? error logs? telnet?

Change DFSR Defrag Schedule?

$

Hi there

We have a Windows 2008 File Server that has several DFSR file replica groups configured.
I can see from the windows event logs that there is a constant DFSR defrag schedule running on these databases as every day from 12:00am to 7:00am the defrag tasks run once an hour (ESENT events 700 & 701) and at 7:00am every day we get ESENT events 102& 103 where the DFS database instance is stopped and started.

The problem is that the database instance is not restarted every second sunday and so that day the defrag tasks keep going all day instead of stopping at 7am.
This causes our backup of the file server to run slower every second Sunday and it fails to complete.

I've been searching through technet and google and I have not been able to find any information about where I can configure the DFS defrag schedule.
It seems to be configured somewhere but I don't know where, can someone help me find it?

Cheers
Grant
