Access Denied Errors on DFS Namespace Shares

$

I'm having issues access the namespace share in my domain.  I will randomly get Access is denied errors hitting \\domain\dfs.  I have 12 namespace servers and three of them (one 2008 R2 and two 2003 R2) are returning Access is denied when you try to hit \\server\dfs.

I have checked the permissions on these and they look fine.  I have even deleted and recreated the namespace servers and even tried deleted the C:\DFSRoots folder on the 2008 R2 box (after removing all namespace server entries for that server).  This has not resolved the issue.

Then, I tried sharing out C:\DFSRoots\DFS under another share name (test) and I can access it fine as \\server\test, but not as \server\dfs.

Any ideas?

"Recycle Bin on is corrupted" error on login

Windows 2008 R2 failover cluster, running new SQL 2008 install. Our DBA's get this error message upon logging onto the server, but those with us with Domain Admin rights do not get this error message.

These drives are not shared (aside from admin shares). The drives themselves are on EMC, and the specific location referenced in the error is a mount point (i.e. X:\SQL_Data)

What is the best way to resolve this error?

Laptops on vlan 2 cannot be pinged by servers on vlan 1, but desktops on vlan 2 can be

I was told to post this here, but it is not an issue with Windows Server as we are running multiple versions of Windows Server on our network. But since we need a solution, I will post it here as well.

We have a vlan setup with servers all on vlan 1.
All other pcs are on vlan 2.
Any desktops on vlan 2 can be pinged from any server on vlan 1.
But any laptops on vlan 2 cannot be pinged from any server on vlan 1.

All desktops and laptops
-have firewall disabled (both windows and security software)
-running windows 7 fully updated.
-wired connections.
-can ping each other system on vlan 2
-can ping all servers on vlan 1

Servers are of different OS's.

Can not understand why it is only the laptops not being able to be pinged.
This results in certain server apps being unable to communicate with the laptops.

Any help would be appreciated.

File server replication setup?

Hi,

I have file server (Rather a server with a shared folder).

I want to implement another server (these are vm's on hyper-v 2012) and ensure some sort of replication between both servers such that if I change a file on one server, it is mirrored to the other.

Would this be DFS-R? VMs are running Windows Server 2012.

Thanks

Files on 2012 Storage Spaces unreadable after reinstalling OS

Hi there,

I have a test setup running HyperV Server 2012.  There are three physical disks, one for the HyperV installation and the other two set up as a storage pool with various virtual disks.

Deciding to have a fresh start, I removed all but one of the virtual disks and reinstalled HyperV server.  After the installation finished I have attached the virtual disk and marked it as read/write and it all appears fine, however whenever I try to access any file larger than a few kb it fails.

Small files work fine, but anything larger gives a "The file cannot be accessed by the system" error

Any ideas on how to resolve this would be greatly appreciated.

Changing Permissions on Network Share

All users in our domain have access to a share which is mapped to F from a logon script.  I want to block access to this share for all users, except for one folder with in the share.  How to I change permissions on it for this to work?

Replicated folders "Namespace Path"

$

There are a couple ways that replicated folders can be created;  #1 Under the namespace, once you've created the 2nd folder target you automatically get prompted to create "a replication group for the new folder targets".  And if you select OK the "New Replicated Folders Wizard" starts.  #2 Under the Replication node in the DFS console, once you've created a new Replication Group, on the right you can click on "New Replicated Folders", and again, the same "New Replicated Folders Wizard" starts.  Same wizard, same steps, either way.  But the results are slightly different.

When I setup our DFS initially, I chose the 2nd method.  After first creating all the namespaces, and the associated Folder Targets, I didn't want to get a new Replication Group for each namespace folder.  So I created one Replication Group, and then ran the replication wizard.  We only replicate between 2 servers.  So under the replication node I see  the replication group, and on the right, many pairs of replicated folders.

Where this method differs, the replicated folders don't appear as part of the namespace.  By that I mean, if you click on a namespace folder on the left (in the console), on the right under the Replication tab there is nothing.  Which means DFS targets and replicated folders are independent of each other.... you can have 2 folders configured to replicate that are not DFS targets.

So my question is;  what are the implications of this?  Can any problems arise from this?

For example:

Namespaces
   \\MyOrg.com\Shared
        DeptA
            |-----  \\ServerA\Share1
            |-----  \\ServerB\Share1

Replication
    ReplicationGroupA
            |-----  \\ServerA\Share1
            |-----  \\ServerB\Share1

And if i click on the Replication group name, and on the right the Replicated Folders tab, under the Publication Status nothing is published.  I have the namespace for DeptA defined, and it works.  But why wasn't that published when I created the replication for those 2 folders?

Guidelines for the number of vNICs to use under a Team for SMB storage traffic

I have a Hyper-V Cluster with the nodes each with a team of 4x 1Gb network adaptors. I needed some guidelines around how many vNICs to use under the team for SMB storage. The team is used for other traffic (Mgmt, Migration, VM), each of which has a vNIC.

I've read that you should use more than one NIC when using SMB3, but what guidelines are there for the number vNICs per team?

Thanks.

Windows server 2012 File Server - Corrupt Images

Hi Guys,

I migrated a windows file share from Windows server 2003 to a new virtual windows server 2012 data centre server. All appears ok except for one issue

There are numerous word docs on this file share (over 300 pages) with images in them (jpegs, pngs ) At times when users open these docs on the new server the images in them are corrupted. When a local copy of the same file is opened all appears fine. It has happened on a few docs now but I cant pin point why this is happening. Obviously it was not happening on the 2003 server. I have no dedup turned on or compression. I simply copied the files over and ntfs permissons. It does not happen all the time so I am thinking it is some read/write issue in 2012. The server reports no high cpu or memory at any time.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks

DFS-R, how to force a referal to a particular server

$

I remember seeing that option when first setting up DFS-R, but now that it is setup, I don't see a place to do this.  We are having problems where changes are getting lost, because of the "sharing violation" that is an inherent problem in using DFS-R.

In reading this article that talks about dealing with file locking, etc... it mentions using this method of specifying which server everyone works from.

How do I set the preferred server after replication has already been configured?

DFS Namespace won't start and ABE not working properly

I have a network file server that I'm using ABE on. I did some updates to the default domain policy that enabled it on my servers properly.

Before I did the update ABE was working fine, and hid the folders properly based on their access. Now it's showing all of the folders, however the access to the sub-folders are restricting access properly. Attached is what I have Security wise at the root folder/drive I'm sharing out.

For the Folder share permissions I have Domain Admins having full access and Domain Users having Read Only. Bottom line nothing has changed as far as NTFS and Sharing permissions go.

Now here's my other problem. DFS Namespace has stopped working and the service has failed to restart. I get a 1068 error message.

I've gone under ADSI Edit on the PDC under System/DFS Configuration and nothing is there where it should have an entry.

Would rebooting solve this issue? Or is there something else I'm missing?

Help! DFS Root Server Issues

Yesterday, we took a Windows Server 2003 box offline and retired it for good.  We were unaware at the time of removal that this server was part of the DFS infrastructure.  It did not host any shares, but..it was the primary root server for this particular namespace.

After some research, I ran the command:  dfsutil /root:\\domain.com\share /export:share.txt

The results were as follows:

<Root Name="\\***\***" Comment="DFS Root" State="1" Timeout="300" >
    <Target Server="DEADSERVER" Folder="***" State="2" />

How can i migrate this role from "DEADSERVER" to another?  We are unable to access the 2003 DFS console, and receive the "RPC Server Unavailable" message.  As a result, no clients can access any of the DFS shares because the primary server is offline.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Server 2012 File Server CSV for Hyper-V on HP P420 Controller

$

Hi, everyone

I would like to confirm something to make sure I am understanding this correctly.

I have 2x DL380 servers with P420i Controllers with fully populated Disks in a RAID 5 Configuration.

1x Partition on the RAID 5 for system/boot and 1x Data (each)

Will I be able to assign that DATA volume and a CSV volume for Hyper-V?

Reasons for asking is an extract from this Blog:

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/clustering/archive/2012/06/02/10314262.aspx

"The clustered storage poolMUST be comprised of Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) connected physical disks. Layering any form of storage subsystem, whether an internal RAID card or an external RAID box, regardless of being directly connected or connected via a storage fabric, is not supported"

Does this mean I have to actually not buy and or configure a RAID controller and that these SAS disks needs to be moved to another controller somehow?

Or is it just a matter that this controller can be used however the disks should not form part of the RAID and just be single disks?

Thanks in advance

Geoff

Trying to resolve scan to folder issue on filser server (shared folder)

Scanner Hardware: using Knoica Minolta multifunction biz hub (model C450) and
folder is on Windows Server 2008 Ent with clustered drive. and offcourse folder is shared,

Service account used: svcscan

Folder is configured with svcscan permission (Modify/read/write)
Scanner is configured with svcscan to push scan job to user home drive which is on

but that does not work. Got the error "scan job was done improperly, check the log".
unfortuately log does not give any information ( as usual)
same service account work perfectly fine when sending job to folder on local machine on same domain, that proves scanner is working & configured properly and service account (svcscan) is working.
What you suggest/ recommend and need your help to resolve

DFS Replication

Hello Everyone,

I have a quick question, keep in mind I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to dfs.  :)  Here is my situation:

I have a simple wan setup with 2 Windows 2008 R2 vmware virtual servers replicationing several folders.  I'm not using Namespaces so when my primary server when down the other day I changed all my mount points to my DR server. (I have a very small enviroment.) Everything worked great. DFS saved me.  lol

Here's my question: Now that I have my primary server operational again.  Is it save to bring it back online?  I believe I have two way replication setup.  I was worried that the primary server would over write the DR server in which all of my staff have been connecting to for several days now.

Could someone please provide me with some advice.  Thanks in advance.

Cheers

Jason

Server 2012 and Cloud Storage Gateway

Here is what I want to do, and surely with microsoft acquiring storesimple it is possible, right?

Place Server 2012 server at primary office

2 additional branch 2012 servers at remote offices

Connect servers to Azure storage, via an assume built in cloud storage gateway, thereby making a storage pool available to all three sites simultaneously...

Like Nasuni, StorSimple, etc PLEASE tell me this is possible.

If not, and Cloud Daddy just cant believe Microsoft would NOT provide this, how would everyone recommend I sync about 900GB of data across 3 sites, each site having high speed cable modem service with 5mb upload. I had thought about the FRS feature, which I honestly havent touched since Server 2003.

I am PRAYING Microsoft has put this feature in!

NFS client is very slow to open files and get items properties

Hi,
I just install built in NFS Client for Ultimate version to connect to a linux server.
Mount works fine, directory exploration too but I have a very long delay on right-click on any items on NFS mapped drives and Office opening session.
Open the same file with an simple hex editor is quite instant. Transferts rate is 1Gbps from the mapped drive to local computer.
No antivirus, no firewall, just a point to point between my computer and the server.

If someone have an idea to speed up these access...
regards

Is RDC feature to be installed before using RDC compression in DFSR in windows 2008r2

Hi There,

We have windows 2008r2 standard servers with dfsr setup across file servers. I was wondering if we need to install RDC feature before we can use RDC compression in DFSR. Does DFSR use RDC feature when using RDC compression or it is built into DFSR functionality.

Thanks.

Clients accessing files via DFS Namespace seeing long pauses....but not with NetBIOS type mappings

Hi All,

Been working on this for several weeks now and wondering if I've missed something basic.

Head Office with 3 Branch Offices

W2K8R2 servers as DC's in each office

Running

Domain Functional Level - Windows Server 2008 R2

Forest Functional Level - Windows Server 2003

I've had this problem SINCE introducing a second DC Windows Server 2012 at head office.

Users at head office experience long lag times to open files ONLY when WS2012 server is online.

I've created alternate login scripts using NetBIOS type mappings (\\Server\DFS) for those users afflicted with this issue

and that immediatley fixes the problem.

Since we don't use WINS I thought that the problem might be resolved by enabling the dfsdnsconfig

as per the following thread.

Enabling DFS to use Fully Qualified Names (FQDN)‎

I'd appreciate any comments or advice as I have little hair left.

thx.

Override Referral Ordering; First/Last among all targets

$

Has anyone tried this and had success with it?

We have replication between (2) 2008 R2 servers.  We were having issues with multiple people making changes to the same file, and changes getting lost.  I changed the referral ordering to specify the original "primary" server as "First among all targets", and the other server to "last among all targets".  It's been several days now since doing that.  But this morning I look at Open Files on the secondary server, and there are open files.... not a lot, but there are some open.

Is this feature not reliable?  Would I have better luck with just removing the check-mark for "enable referals for this folder target"?
