MoveSecurityAttributes in Server 2012 R2

$

Hi,

Does anyone know whether the MoveSecurityAttributes registry setting should work in Server 2012? In 2008 you could enable this to make moved files/folders inherit permissions from their parent. But I can't get it working in 2012.

2008 needed a a hotfix (kb/2617058) to get it working, though - reckon I can install this on 2012?

(can't add links till I'm verified, sorry)

Cheers,

Andrew

Windows explorer search not finding file

Good afternoon

Just having a bit of an odd issue when searching for a file on a Windows 2012 R2 terminal server; when searching for an excel file in file explorer or the start menu search, it does not show up despite being in the searched location. The drive on which the file is located is indexed, and we have tried rebuilding the index several times.

The file can be found if you create a copy of it though, can anyone shed some light as to which the original is not showing up?

Server 2012 R2 File Server Stops Responding to SMB Connections

$

Hi There,

Massive shot in the dark here but I am struggling with a pretty major issue atm.  We have a production file server that is hosted on the following:

Dell MD 3220i -> iSCSI -> Server 2008 R2 Hyper-v Cluster -> Passthrough Disk -> Server 2012 R2 File Server VM

Essentially 3 times now, roughly a month or so apart.  The file server stops accepting connections.  During this time, the server is perfectly accessible through rdp or with a simple ping.  I can browse the files on the server directly but no-one appears to be able to access the shares over SMB.  A reboot of the server fixes the issue.

As per a KB article I removed nod antivirus from the server to rule out a conflicting filter mode driver after the second fault.  Sadly yesterday it happened again.

The only relevant errors in the servers log files are:

SMB Server Event ID 551

SMB Session Authentication Failure Client Name: \\192.168.105.79 Client Address: 192.168.105.79:50774 User Name: HHS\H6-08$ Session ID: 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF Status: Insufficient server resources exist to complete the request. (0xC0000205) Guidance: You should expect this error when attempting to connect to shares using incorrect credentials. This error does not always indicate a problem with authorization, but mainly authentication. It is more common with non-Windows clients. This error can occur when using incorrect usernames and passwords with NTLM, mismatched LmCompatibility settings between client and server, duplicate Kerberos service principal names, incorrect Kerberos ticket-granting service tickets, or Guest accounts without Guest access enabled

and

SMB Server event ID 1020
File system operation has taken longer than expected.

Client Name: \\192.168.105.97
Client Address: 192.168.105.97:49571
User Name: HHS\12J.Champion
Session ID: 0x2C07B40004A5
Share Name: \\*\Subjects
File Name:
Command: 5
Duration (in milliseconds): 176784
Warning Threshold (in milliseconds): 120000

Guidance:

The underlying file system has taken too long to respond to an operation. This typically indicates a problem with the storage and not SMB.

I have checked the underlying disk/iscsi/network hyper-v cluster for any other errors or issues, but as far as I can tell everything is fine.

Is it possible that something else is left over from the NOD antivirus installation?

Looking for suggestions on how to troubleshoot this further.

Thanks

I am getting three VSS errors when WS2008 backup executes.  I have no idea where to begin to look for the problem.
The error (Event 8193) is:

The other two are duplications of this error.
Can anyone help me find a solution to this error?

Expand non-storage space disk, to storage space

Hello.

At my private test setup, i have an single disk used for backup (not important) and some VHDXs for some VMs.

I just bought 2 more 4TB HGST disks, and now want to use the previous single disk + the 2 new ones as a Raid 5 (parity) volume.

The only problem is, that one of the VHDX files on the single HDD is 2,9TB in size, and i dont have any other storage where i can put the 2,9TB of files - while creating a new storage pool.

Is it possible to create a storage pool with 3 disks in it, and "merge" the data from the Single HDD to the new parity volume?

DFSR Monitoring And Alerting - Tools? Scripts?

$

0

I found a few articles regarding this but most offer homebrew scripts (not necessarily anything wrong with that) and are a couple/few years old.

We are implementing some new file servers in our environment and moving from Backup Exec to DFSR. Basically just replicating the files from the file servers to a server @ home base which gets backed up nightly.

I'm looking for a tool that will monitor the replication groups and alert (email) us if there are any errors. Does such a tool exist?

If not, is there a good script that will do the job?

Any recommendations/advice/information would be appreciated. Thanks!

DFS Setup Error

Hello,
I am having difficulty adding a dfs namespace server on a server after removal of the old namespace.  to my knowledge I thought I removed it without a trace.  apparently I missed something?
I have even went as far as pulling all the DFS information from the registry and removing and reinstalling DFS file services.

I have a domain based namespace setup on one server already and am looking to add the second server as a namespace server.   The process succeeds with all the steps and fails on commit changes.

When I look at the error I receive it is
The namespace server \\server\namespace cannot be added.
The server already hoses a stand alone namespace.  you can add...

Unfortunately when looking at the server in question no namespace is setup?

Any ideas where to look would be appreciated!

I cannot manage (bring online, initialize, partition, format, or write to) a VHDX hard drive once it has "Enable Virtual Hard Disk Sharing" enabled.

Hello,

Issue:

On a Virtual Machine with a secondary VHDX attached, I cannot manage (bring online, initialize, partition, format, or write to) the VHDX hard drive once it has "Enable Virtual Hard Disk Sharing (VHD Sharing)" enabled.

Questions:

Should I be able to manage (bring online, initialize, partition, format, and write to) a VHDX hard drive once it has VHD Sharing enabled? If I should be able to manage it, what am I missing?

Topography:

One SuperMicro Cluster In a Box (CIB) with 2012 R2 Data Center on each node. Microsoft Failover Cluster installed and working on each node. The Failover Cluster Servers on each host passes all cluster validation tests. Two Hyper-V 2012 R2 Data Center Virtual Machine (VM) servers, one on each node. 1 common Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) and 1 Generation 2 Scale-Out File Server (SOFS) shared volume both Resilient File System (REFS) formatted. One 5 Gigabit (Gb) Virtual Hard Drive Type X (VHDX) file on the CSV and/or SOFS. Integrity bit and read only turned off on VHDX file.

Each of the two Hyper-V VMs have one 127Gb VHDX Generation 2 primary hard drive and 1 VHDX secondary hard drive attached, both on SCSI Controller #1.

Background:

If I start VM1 without the VHD Sharing enabled on the secondary hard drive, I can bring the drive online, initialize, partition, format, and write to the drive.

If I enable VHD Sharing, I can no longer modify the drive in Disk Management in any way. With or without VM2 running.

Both VMs and the CSV and SOFS are on the same host cluster server, or not, no difference…

The VHDX is referenced either by the CSV name C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1\TEST1.VHDX or a Shared Folder name \\sharedfolder\folder\Test1.VHDX .

If I start VM1 with VHD Sharing disabled and I format the drive, then shut down and enable VHD Sharing, the drive is offline and requests initialization which fails with an "I/O device error", every other attempt to manage the drive fails with the same "I/O device error", error.

But second server showing high backlog waiting replication to Server1 - in the same time Staging Folder is empty. When i'm disabling membership for this server, and enabling back - some time it is showing 0 backlog - all is ok, but then it resumes to show hight backlog again. How i can fix it?

Files shares randomly display "Location is not available"

$

Hi all,

I recently set up a windows 2012 file share server for departments and user folders. I've pushed the drive mappings out via group policy and on my laptop they work flawlessly. On everyone else's computers, they're hit or miss. Group Policy is currently mapping the drives based on IP address (i.e. \\172.31.255.250\shares\departments). As an example, this share will map to a user's device and it will be accessible. Periodically, they will no longer be able to access it and receive a "Location is not available" message. However, if I navigate to the DNS name (i.e. \\servername\shares\departments) it will work. If that location becomes unavailable later on, I can still access it via FQDN (i.e. \\servermame.domain.com\shares\departments).

More information:
- Using my account on my laptop, I never have an issue with my network drives.
- Signing in to another laptop with my account, I experience the same issues as the other users.
- All of our computers are running windows 8.1 pro and are currently up to date.

GPO configuration:
Action - Update
Location - \\172.31.255.250\shares\departments
Reconnect - True
Drive Letter - Use S:
Hide/Show this drive - Show this drive
Hide/Show all drives - No change

Edit:

I'm seeing this in the logs and don't know why it would be happening:
The user 'S:' preference item in the 'Map department folders {3B0FD149-D2DD-440B-A68D-8A137558F393}' Group Policy Object did not apply because it failed with error code '0x800708ca This network connection does not exist.' This error was suppressed.

Error "Failed to toggle the drive light: Not Supported" - LSI SAS 9200-8e and Dell MD1000

I'm running Windows Server 2012 R2 with an LSI SAS 9200-8e Host Bus Adapter. This adapter is certified for Server 2012 R2.

I have a Dell MD1000 storage array connected and loaded up with SEAGATE ST3300555SS drives. I have successfully configured a storage pool. However I need to be able to toggle a drive light so I can pull out the correct drive.

When I choose the "Toggle Drive Light" option I get the error message. Failed to toggle the drive light: Not Supported.

Is there anything I can do to get this working?

How can I figure out which device is the problem? The HBA (LSI SAS9200-8e), the storage enclosure (Dell MD1000) or the drive (SEAGATE ST3300555SS)?

Windows Clustered Storage Spaces

Hello I am trying to create clustered storage spaces with 2 nodes(R710\Windows 2012 R2) and JBOD(SC280 + MD1200).  I created windows cluster and add both servers as cluster nodes. I see both servers can see the disks and also installed MPIO feature. I have all SAS drives 3.5 TB and 1 TB.

1 -Should I create separate Clustered Storage Pool for 1 TB and 3.5 TB drive or just one storage pool with both density drive. I didn't find or missed any good best practice document.

2- Should I assign hot spare in storage Pool I believe in windows 2012 R2 Microsoft recommend allocation to be automatic  and not to assign hot spare

3-  Do I need to install cluster role inorder to have other servers to use this storage as ISCSI, NFS and SMB ?

Really appreciate everyone help

Windows Server R2 stop working. Cannot map network drive with my Win 7 client.

Hi to everyone.

I had a problem for quite some time time and even i tried to solved it till now unfortunately seems unreachable.

I have a 2008 R2 server which is used as SQL 2005 server. My application program shared from the server. My win 7 client  use a map network drive to access my share folder from my windows server. Suddenly my clients lost my connection. Since then i cannot connect to the folder and i got the message

Windows cannot access \\Server\Storage

Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose.

Details: Error code: 0x80070035 The network path was not found.

I check out my share permissions, all seems ok. I also check out firewall, services, TCP/IP, share folders, really almost everything but still nothing.

Does anyone have any idea how to resolve the problem.
