Can't find Unmapped Unix User Access option

$

Hello,

I followed the instructions found here: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh509022%28v=ws.10%29.aspx

in order to enable Unmapped Unix User Access.  I'm on a Windows 2008 R2 server and when I get to the "No server authentication" check box I don't see this option.   I don't see any of the options past this point ("Enable unmapped user access", "Allow unmapped UNIX user access".

I also tried the other two methods mentioned ("Share and Storage Management" and "Nfsshare.exe") and neither of these seems to know what I'm talking about either.  This option doesn't seem to exist for me.

Any clues?

Thanks,
Nathan

Shadow copy creates just one copy

Hi there,

On main file server we use one big 8Tb volume and shadow copy is enabled for it. SC is configured for daily backups, every night, 2.7Tb free on the drive, 9Gb current copy, no limit (was set to 800Gb limit, but I've disabled it). But it keeps only one, the latest copy for some reason and delete older copies.

Any ideas how to fix that?

Thank you.

Work Folders - Not Functioning Correctly - Sync Stopped. Blocked by security policies

Currently trying to deploy Work Folders so that when a user logs in, all of his/her settings are pointing to the local Work Folders which are then synchronized with the Work Folders server.  I have found the follow post regarding someone experiencing a similar issue to mine however it doesn't appear to be the exact same issue as the poster's fix doesn't fix my issue.  (See: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/bf6b77de-349c-454e-8746-f26e76c8f3a3/work-folders-not-working-on-second-computer?forum=winserver8gen)

I am seeing the following error - in the Work Folders section under control panel - on my account that I've configured to use WORK FOLDERS:

Note: The "manage credentials" link on the left-hand side when clicked displays the following:

Any thoughts?

Server 2012 USB 3.0 Drive Not Recognized

Hello,

This is my setup:

Dell Server running ESXI 5.5 (with all updates to get the USB 3.0 card driver to start and recognize)

USB Card is Renesas based

Guest:  Server 2012 Standard (NOT R2)

I am trying to get a USB 3.0 drive to work with this setup.  On the guest I see the "Standard USB eXtensible Host Controller - 0096 (Microsoft)" and it is installed and appears working properly.  The light on the USB drive now lights up.

My issue is in the Storage controllers, I have:  "USB Attached SCSI (UAS) Mass Storage Device" and it is yellowed out.  I get an (Code 10) error This device cannot start.  Is there a driver I am missing?

If someone out there could please give me some assistance on getting this working I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

Mike

File Screening and Roaming Profiles

$

Hi,

We plan on implementing File Screening to stop movie and video content on our users home drives.

Our environment:

Windows File Server 2008 R2

Desktop environment: XP, Vista and Win7 mixed

After reading this kb 973835:

I found a line that reads:  "Therefore, we do not recommend that you use Roaming Profiles fromWindows XP-based or Windows Server 2003-based clients when FSRM File Screening applies to the profile share folder."

My Question:

Are these roaming profile issues with XP only experienced with Server 2003 or are these problems experienced with XP in general?

I.e. If I use Server 2008 will this problem exist ?

\\?\UNC\server\share - verylongpath errors out

$

In Windows Explorer the UNC long path construction errors out as:
Windows cannot access \\?\UNC\server\share
(Error: 0x80004005)

Background: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa365247(v=vs.85).aspx

To specify an extended-length path, use the "\\?\" prefix. For example, "\\?\D:\very long path".

The "\\?\" prefix can also be used with paths constructed according to the universal naming convention (UNC). To specify such a path using UNC, use the "\\?\UNC\" prefix. For example, "\\?\UNC\server\share", where"server" is the name of the computer and "share" is the name of the shared folder.

What am I missing here? The UNC prefix never worked for me.

DFSR - backlog and sharing violations

Hi,

i have a Replication Group Setup with a lot of sharing violations (accessed files) and lately i also saw a list of backlogged files. I also noticed, that a small txt file i created wasnt replicated either. It took a few hours and everything was replicated, so in General it works.

My question: is it safe to say, that when having a large amount of sharing violations and backlog files that also normal files will be queued at the end of the Journal/list and not treated with Preference ? Also in normal circumstances those not accessed files would be replicated very fast, but due to backlogs delayed ?

thanks for clarification.

VirtualDisk on Windows Server 2012 R2 Storage Pool stuck in "Warning: In Service" state and all file transfers to and from is awfully slow

$

Greetings,

I'm having some trouble with my Windows Storage Pool and my VirtualDisk running on a Windows Server 2012 R2 installation. It consists of 8x Western Digital RE-4 2TB drives + 2x Western Digital Black Edition 2TB drives and have been configured in a single-disk parity setup and the virtual disk is running fixed provisioning (max size) and is formatted with ReFS.

It's been running solid for months besides some awful write-speeds at times, it seems like the write performance running ReFS compared to NTFS is not that good.

I was recommended to add SSD's for journalling in order to boost write-performance. Sadly I seemed to screw up this part, you need to due this through PowerShell and it needs to be done before creating the virtualdisk. I managed to add my SSD to the Storage Pool and then remove it.

This seem to have caused some awkward issues, I'm not quite sure of why as the virtualdisk is "fixed" so adding the SSD to the Storage Pool shouldn't really do anything, right? But after I did this my virtual disk have been stuck in "Warning: In Service" and it seems to be stuck? It's been 4-5 days and it's still the same and the performance is currently horrible. Moving 40GB of data off the virtual disk took me about 20 hours or so. Launching files under 1mb of the virtual disk takes several minutes etc.. It's pretty much useless.

The GUI is not providing any useful information about what's going on. What does "Warning: In Service" actually imply? How am I supposed to know how long this is supposed to take? Running Get-Virtualdisk in PowerShell does not provide any useful information either. I did try to do a repair through the Server Manager GUI but it goes to about 21% within 2-3 hours but drops back down to 10%. I have had the repair running for days but it wont go past 21% without dropping back down again.

Running repair through PowerShell yields the same results, but if I detach the virtual disk and then try to repair through PowerShell (the GUI wont let me do repair on detached virtual disks) it will just run for a split second and then close.

After doing some "Googeling" I've seen people mentioning that the repair is not able to finish unless I have at least the same amount of free space in the Storage Pool as the largest drive in my Storage Pool is housing so I added a 4TB drive as due to me running fixed provisioning I had used all the space in the pool but the repair is still not able to go past 21%.

As am running "fixed provisioning" I guess adding a extra drive to the pool doesn't do much difference as it's not available for the virtual disk? So I went ahead and deleted 3 TB of data on the virtual disk so now I've got about 4 TB free space on the virtual disk so there should be plenty of room for Windows Server 2012 R2 to re-build the parity or whatever it's trying to do but it's still the same, the repair wont move past 21% and the virtual disk is still stuck in "Warning: In Service" mode and the performance keeps being horrible so taking a backup will take forever at these speeds...

Am I missing something here? All the drives in the pool is working fine. I have verified using various bootable tools so why is this happening and what can I do to get the virtual disk running at full state again? Why doesn't the GUI prompt you with any kind of usable information?

Best regards, Thomas Andre

Tiered Storage Spaces Capacity Calculator

$

Hi there,

I'm having trouble working out how important the size of the SSDs in a Tiered Storage Spaces deployment is.

We're working on deploying clustered storage spaces with 2 SOFS head units to create a 3 JBOD, 4-column, 2-way mirrored, enclosure redundant SOFS cluster.

Disk Layout

3 x 24-bay JBODs

8 x 200GB SAS SSDs per JBOD (24 total)

16 x 2TB SAS HDDs per JBOD (48 total)

Am I right in thinking that with this setup, I can create a 2 way mirrored, 4 column tiered storage space with ~48TB capacity?

Will the smaller SSDs impact the total capacity of the storage space, or will it just impact the amount of data that can be SSD accelerated? It is my understanding that the capacity of the SSDs doesn't impact the overall capacity, but just influences the total amount of data that can be kept 'hot' on the SSDs.

I have been able to find guidance on the number of SSDs recommended per JBOD, but I've been unable to find any guidance on the size of the SSDs in relation to the size of the HDDs or total capacity of the mirrored space.

Create OSDX file for Windows Server 2008 R2 Search

$

I have  Windows 2008 R2 fileserver (~7TB of data) with Search Services running and many Win7/Win8 clients.

How do I create the OSDX file for the index on the Windows Server to distribute to my desktops so they can use the Server's index's can be used when searching for files on network shares?

I'm probably saying this incorrectly, but in the end what I want is for the desktops to use the Server's index when searching for a file on the file server instead of trying to do a brute force search via SMB on the mounted filesystem.

Any help or pointers are greatly appreciated!

Failed to create a shadow copy - Volume Shadow Copy Service error

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

we have a Windows Server 2012 R2 (fully patched)

On this Server we are running File and Storage Services. I was able to enable Shadow Copies on Volume F:\ (used space 419 GB, free space 5 TB)

When I try to enable shadow copies (rightclick on Volume -> Configure Shadow Copies -> click on Volume E:\ -> click on enable) on Volume e: (used space 82 TB, free space 5 TB) I get the following error from shadow copies:

DFS Namespace is inaccessible when DC4 is up and running

$

DC1, DC2 and DC3 are at site A. DC4 and DFS server (2008 R2) are at Site B. DC4 is Server 2003 and not a Global Catalog. DC1, DC2 and DC3 all are Server 2003, FSMO role holders and a Global Catalog. DC1 is Master DNS (SOA) for the Domain, All DC's are also DNS enabled.

When we bring the DC4 up the DFS namespace is inaccessible. For workaround I have to keep the DC4 down.

We do have AD replication issues between both the sites, FSMO roles are distributed between the three servers at Site A. All DC's are DNS zone integrated

Any suggestions to look at this issue?

Ricoh Aficio MP C2051 Scan to Folder - Windows Server 2012 Error: Authentication with the destination has failed check settings

I have recently upgraded a clients servers to Windows Server 2012 & since doing so have lost the ability to scan to folder.

Both servers are domain controllers and previously on a 2008 domain controller I would have had to make the following change to allow scan to folder:
 Administrative Tools
 Server Manager
 Features
 Group Policy Manager
 Forest: ...
 Default Domain Policy
Computer configuration
 Policies
 Windows Settings
 Security Settings
 Local Policies
 Security Options
Microsoft Network Server: Digitally Sign Communications (Always)
 - Define This Policy
 - Disabled

However I have applied this to the Windows 2012 server but am still unable to scan, possibly due to added layers of security in server 2012. The error on the scanner is Authentication with the destination has failed check settings.
I have also tried the following at the server:
Policies -> Security Policies
Change Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level to: Send LM & NTLM - Use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated.
Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) clients and uncheck the require 128 bit.
Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) servers and uncheck the require 128 bit
I have created a user account on the server for the ricoh and set this in the settiings of the Ricoh and verified everything is correct.

Are there any other things I have missed?

DFSR Private Folders deleted in error. Recreate or reset DFSR without having to resync 160 GB of Data

I have two servers that were using DFSR replication to sync 160 GB of data over a slow VPN connection. The VPN was down for several months because of ISP issues and is now up. I made the error when attempting to update the files manually between the sites using xcopy of overwriting the DFSRPrivateFolders. When that happened I researched the issue and thought that deleting the existing DFSRPrivate Folders and restarting the service would fix the issue. I'm now getting the following error in the DFS Event Log and replication is not working.

Event ID: 4004

The DFS Replication service stopped replication on the replicated folder at local path D:\Common\Document.

Additional Information:
Error: 145 (The directory is not empty.)
Additional context of the error:
Replicated Folder Name: Document
Replicated Folder ID: FE7983D1-B3BB-4A90-B9ED-F6F9EFD1AAB7
Replication Group Name: REEF
Replication Group ID: 52D7244C-B495-4928-9761-4B4B01BEE151
Member ID: 6AC30C0F-C5AA-4490-A34C-14B47627B6D3

Is there a way to repair the damage or reset the DFS Folders without having to replicate 160 GB of data again over a slow connection. I also want to make sure I don't overwrite newer files on either server with older files in error. There is not enough free space on servers to make duplicate copies of all the data if I have to start from scratch.

Thank you,

Robert Silberman

Storage spaces , stale metadata

Hi!

First of all, unfortuneatly I wasn't able to attach screenshots, so I'll try to describe the problem in text.

I ran in to a storage spaces problem on a Windows server 2012 where the pool is degraded. Disk 9 seems to have been evicted to the primordial pool.

Running the Get-PhysicalDisk shows a Stale Metadata operational status.

PhysicalDisk9       False               Stale Metadata      Warning             Auto-Select

However, I've got no alerts from our SCOM monitoring regarding this.  Also when looking in the raid tools supplied by the JBOD manufacturer everything seems to be fine, so I got no alerts from that one either. In the manufacturers software the disk is reported as Status: available with 0 SMART errors.

So the question is: What is the stale metadata error? Is this disk actually broken? (doesnt seem like that according to the vendors utilitys). Should this disk be replaced or is it some kind of software errror that can be repaired?

Advice needed.

ISCSI Initiator reports "Disk -1" ?

Hello,

i have a netgear NAS that acts as ISCSI Target for my Windows Server. The NAS has 2 NICs, which are configured with independent IP-Adresses: 192.168.100.2 and 192.168.101.2

My Server provides a counterpart for each NIC available: 192.168.100.1 and 192.168.101.1

The NAS should hosts 4 drives, which are setup as 4 LUNs and wrapped into 2 target-groups. The idea was to increase performance by connecting to both groups with an independent NIC. This worked perfectly fine when testing it with one disk per target-group.

I tested this with one drive per group and testing was fine: about 198 MB/s throughput on a Simple-Disk with 2 Columns.

Now, I added one more disk and I am facing the problem, that the ISCSI-Initiator reports "Disk -1" for the two old disks.

Also the Disk-Management shows "2 Disks Missing":

However, Storage Pools are NOT reporting any problems with the ISCSI Disks (19&17, 18 not yet pooled):

so, is it "healty" now or not? May it be possible that Storage Spaces isn't able to catch missing ISCSI Disks and sends all the data to the disks without recognizing that no data is actually written???

Or is this just the "result" of pooled disks no longer appearing in Disk-Management? (So, The Initiator cannot find it, thus reporting "Disk -1" which in turn will make the Disk-Management think there is a missing disk?)

best,

Shared Drives Intermittently Dropping

Hello,

I have an issue with most of my clients (Win7 and WinXP) accessing the Shared Drives. I have brand new Windows 2012 R2 Server acting as the DC, File Server, DNS, and DCHP. Almost all users are reporting that they cannot access the shared drive while using their computer (not idle). The connection will be re-establish by restart or re-mapping the drives. All the mapped drives are manually connected via command line with persistent enabled (no login script or GPO). Also, whenever they lost connection to the share drives they cannot access the internet.

After surfing the internet, I found some similar issues and applied the changes but still having the issue.

Current Configuration on the server:

- NO external DNS configured on the DC

- All Clients are registered on the DNS

- DNS Interface Set to All IP Addresses

- Dynamic Updates set to Secure

- DNS Properties - Security Tab - Authenticated Users is present with Create all Child Objects

- No Secondary DNS Server

- All Clients does not have any external DNS

- NIC Power Management is set not turn off the device

- Applied this command on all machines "Net Server /autodisconnect -1"

During the initial setup, I set the static IP of the server with proper IP and added an external DNS (4.2.2.2). Another article I came across after doing a lot of research says that if you add an external DNS(during the initial setup), you will have some similar issues with shared drives dropping.

I really believe that the issue is the DNS but I cannot figure out what needs to be change to resolve the issue. On the article I read, he installed a secondary DNS server and that resolves the issue. I want to set a secondary DNS server using one of my server (on the same network and IP) but with little knowledge setting a secondary server I am having issue.

Please HELP!!

Thanks.

DPM drive marked invalid after adding drive raid5 volume

DPM 2010 - OS 2008R2-Sp1

Added a 4th drive(2Tb each)  to a raid5 DPM disk, boot bios sees new array 5.7tb (4 drives) and so does "intel matrix storage".

Server Manager console shows drive invalid.

How do I take care of the inconsistencies between the different reports below and have them all play nice?

Detail reports;

Server Manager console shows Disk 1 Dynamic, Invalid.

DPM protection Disks shows drive as Disk failed or disk not found.
