Tiered Storage Spaces Capacity Calculator

$

Hi there,

I'm having trouble working out how important the size of the SSDs in a Tiered Storage Spaces deployment is.

We're working on deploying clustered storage spaces with 2 SOFS head units to create a 3 JBOD, 4-column, 2-way mirrored, enclosure redundant SOFS cluster.

Disk Layout

3 x 24-bay JBODs

8 x 200GB SAS SSDs per JBOD (24 total)

16 x 2TB SAS HDDs per JBOD (48 total)

Am I right in thinking that with this setup, I can create a 2 way mirrored, 4 column tiered storage space with ~48TB capacity?

Will the smaller SSDs impact the total capacity of the storage space, or will it just impact the amount of data that can be SSD accelerated? It is my understanding that the capacity of the SSDs doesn't impact the overall capacity, but just influences the total amount of data that can be kept 'hot' on the SSDs.

I have been able to find guidance on the number of SSDs recommended per JBOD, but I've been unable to find any guidance on the size of the SSDs in relation to the size of the HDDs or total capacity of the mirrored space.

Problems setting up Remote Web Access in Windows Storage Server 2008 R2

We just bought a WD Sentinel DX4000 Storage Server and went through the Remote Web Access wizard.  It setup the router just fine but when we got to the setup your domain name we have been having headaches ever since.  We chose the option to use our own domain name, which we have registered through GoDaddy.  It then showed that yes, our provider was GoDaddy but then it told us we needed to update our service with GoDaddy so we clicked the"Go to GoDaddy.com" button and it sent us to a page to purchase an SSL certificate.  So, we did that but then had issues with it not being able to be managed in our GoDaddy account.  So, I went into the domain name with GoDaddy and purchased a certificate there and got it setup on the domain name with GoDaddy.

The problem is that when I try to go through the wizard again to set up the domain name I still have to click the goDaddy button to move to the next page where I type my domain name, username, and password with GoDaddy.  I setup the remote extension in the A records with GoDaddy as remote.mydomain.com, and put in my username and password with GoDaddy.  After I click next it tries to connect to the domain name service provider but then gives me the following error message over and over:

The domain name was not set up for your server.  Wait a few minutes and run the wizard again.

An unexpected or unknown problem occurred.  Please wait a few minutes, and then try again.

Well, I have tried this several times and am about to start pulling my hair out.  Can anyone please tell me what I may be doing wrong?

Thanks for any help you may be able to provide.

chkdsk question

I am designing a new storage system which will be in the 80TB range.  We've traditionally used RAID cards and NTFS, but I am now looking at ReFS and Storage Spaces.  One of the big benefits of ReFS is not having to run chkdsk.  On this new volume though, we will be storing all larger files - all files are in the 2GB range.  Does the fact that this volume will not be full of a bunch of small files mean chkdsk will run "fast", at least in comparison to a bunch of smaller files?  I'd love to stick with NTFS because it's been around so long, and want to figure out if our workload might make it more feasible.  Thanks!

Get-FsrmQuota does not return any data (2012R2).

Hello to everyone in this forum,

I'm using PowerShell to gain quota info from our 2012R2 file server. The exact cmdlet I utilize I theGet-FsrmQuota cmdlet. Today I was troubleshooting why no data was returned when this cmdlet was used. During my troubleshooting session I found that after I opened the File Server Resource Manager the cmdlet worked again.

So the question is. Have any of you experienced this? Is there a patch that fixes this issue? And why would it work to open the File Server Resource Manager? (maybe because it instantiates the Ps module or the CIM/WMI section?)

- 2012R2 fileserver

- Ps version 4.0

- The FileServerResourceManager Ps module is v2.0

Looking forward to your thoughts and answer.

Data Deduplication - max memory allocation

Hi

i encountered this issue on a server:

2012R2

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2891882/

i have configured the value from the KB, but i still get:

Data Deduplication detected job type "Optimization" on volume "\\?\Volume{8ce5ac3c-46df-4a37-8a9e-c4b28f1354d1}\" uses too much memory. 3179 MB is assigned. 3870 MB is used.

Data Deduplication cancelled job type "Optimization" on volume "\\?\Volume{8ce5ac3c-46df-4a37-8a9e-c4b28f1354d1}\". It uses too much memory than the amount assigned to it.

for the volume with most data.

can the value be increased?

Server showing up the wrong user

Hello,

i have a problem in Windows 2003 Server. This server is where all the files are stored.

The problem his, when the user "cstell" opens a office file, and then the user "plumpy" tries to open the same file, it returns a warning that the user "storm" has the file open and the "plumpy" can only open for read.

The problem here is that the server is identifying the wrong user that have the file open, it should be showing that the user "cstell" has the file open.

Any thoughts?

Firewall - Trust - ISILON

Environment:

Domain A and Domain B have a 2 way trust

Domain A houses the ISILON Storage device with SMB Shares, permissioned with Domain A Local groups and Domain B Global Groups

Firewalls are rampant across the environment

Situation:

User from Domain A can connect to the SMB Shares on the ISILON no problem.

Exact same computer, Exact same share, exact same permissions - Domain B Account gets "Error 59 An unexpected network error occurred"

Domain User B is directly permissioned on the share as well as being in a Domain A Local Group with permissions.

In addition to the user authentication issue, when looking at the security on the share the Domain B groups show as SIDs, not display name.

Assumption:

It appears that the issue with the user authentication of users in Domain B.  However, we have "Validated" the trust of both sides and the validation says it's fine.

Question:

What is the process flow and PORTS for a resource in Domain A to authenticate a user from Domain B, and to translate a SID into a Display name?

Thanks,

T

Users Not Syncing to Document Server

We currently have a Document Storage Server for each Student are Networked through GPO.  Occasionally we run into an issue that has stumped us.

When a Student logs onto the Windows 7 Enterprise PC, they have no documents or path to the Storage Server.  When I log on to another PC with the Students profile, the Student has their documents.  We have reset and cleared all the profiles on the 1st PC, but yet still the Student has no documents.  However another Student can log on to the 1st PC and have all their documents.

Confusing, but we have yet to find a reason why.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Reference for Dynamic Disks and MBR Partitions

I've been trying to find a reference for how Dynamic Disks work with MBR an partition style and haven't found one.  Specifically, I want to know how a partitioning style like MBR which allows only four partitions to allow 2000 dynamic disk volumes on it.  Are there such things as primary partitions in this scenario?  Is there a master boot record on any of the volumes?  How does it work? Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Domain Based DFS Namespace with DNS-Alias

$

Hi Community,

i found already some posts in this forum about the question on how to use a CNAME records for a DFS-N domain based namespace but they are all pretty uniformative / unspecific.

Scenario:

AD Forest (2003 FL) with two AD-Domains & 10 AD-Sites. We want 1 or 2 DFS-N namespace servers per AD-Site with one big namespace. We want to use an CNAME for the ad domain to access the dfs-n ressources by a shorter name. For example the DNS Domain Name ist sub.domain.tld and the root namespace is Contoso we want to access it with the CNAME fileserver (fileserver.sub.domain.tld CNAME points to sub.domain.tld). UNC with Alias is \\fileserver\Contoso and the sub.domain.tld is in the suffix search list.

Questions:

- Do we need to set the "DisableStrictNameChecking" on all Domain Controllers?
- Is Kerberos Authentication still supported or do we need to add SPNs and to which computer objects?
- Is the Namespace still "AD Site Aware" and the client uses the closest available namespace server?
- Does it work for SMB1, SMB2 & SMB3 Clients?
- Is it fully supported?
- Some bigger disadvantages with this configuration?

Thanks.

Hello I am trying to find out the best course of action. I need to move files from a server that has 2003 to a server that has 2008, I need to move all the files over from the old server to the new server along with the permissions.  I don't want to make a mistake on the new server, the tool I will be using is backup exec 2012.  Can anyone advise on what the best course of action would be to do this?

Symbolic link type changed

$

We have been using symbolic intensively to archive historic files. An automatic script would create symbolic links regularly based on certain criteria. Users don't experience inconvenience as the soft links can be opened as regular files, programs will run without issues, and the type of those soft links are identical to the type of file it has a link to (for example, a symbolic link to an Excel file will have Excel file type in its properties). However, recently we have noticed that the type of links has changed to SYMLINK which makes Windows to ask users to choose what program to open with by popping up the "Open With.." window.

Do you guys what will affect the file server to change its behavior and represent symbolic links type as SYMLINK and create additional troubles?

Work Folders - Not Functioning Correctly - Sync Stopped. Blocked by security policies

Currently trying to deploy Work Folders so that when a user logs in, all of his/her settings are pointing to the local Work Folders which are then synchronized with the Work Folders server.  I have found the follow post regarding someone experiencing a similar issue to mine however it doesn't appear to be the exact same issue as the poster's fix doesn't fix my issue.  (See: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/bf6b77de-349c-454e-8746-f26e76c8f3a3/work-folders-not-working-on-second-computer?forum=winserver8gen)

I am seeing the following error - in the Work Folders section under control panel - on my account that I've configured to use WORK FOLDERS:

Note: The "manage credentials" link on the left-hand side when clicked displays the following:

Any thoughts?

Restrict User Write-Access on Shared Drive

$

We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine that contains a shared drive which all users at one of our office locations access. Recently, we have begun to reorganize this shared drive to ensure that all protected information is properly secured and that all company data is organized and accessible to only authorized staff members. However, we have run into an issue wherein users are still creating and modifying files within the root of the shared drive. How can we restrict user write-access to only the root of the shared drive without this restriction becoming inherited to all of the carefully organized sub-folders?

DFSR Replicating very slowly on 2012 R2 Web Cluster

$

My environment is fairly simple. We have two web servers running 2012 R2 in a NLB cluster. They have a shared config and the sites and all their corresponding files live on a shared volume (D:) that is replicated with DFSR between the two. The replication is set to constant (maximum bandwidth) and the servers themselves live on a Hyper-V cluster that uses a high end SAN for its shared storage. The servers are blazing fast, the web traffic and response is blazing fast.

The issue: When our development team is doing a release of new files (updates and such), the DFS slows to a halt and the backlog of files starts growing rapidly. The latest update we had was about 1700 files, but it was only 68MBs. This should be nearly instant between the two servers.

The only things I can think of are:

1. The developers delete the old folder structures and replace them with the new files/folders. This eliminates the chance of leaving older internal files that are no longer needed inside the site's folders. By doing this, when Server 2 is trying to replicate the deletion, and then the files with a similar name but with internal changes reappear in the same folder, Server 2 is unsure what to do and has to analyze each file and decide what to do again.

2. Since the servers live in a Hyper-V cluster, they can communicate very quickly to one another. I still have RDC turned on. Our largest files would be images, which would be a couple MB at the most. All the rest of the files are tiny, so due to the fast network and size of files, I could always turn off RDC to see if that improves the performance.

From what I have seen for Web Clusters, DFSR is what is recommended for the sites files and the shared config. The size of the files we are changing/adding are not huge, but it is crippling to our servers. Has anyone experienced this, or does anyone have any recommendations to tune the performance of our 2012 R2 servers for DFSR? Thanks in advance for any help.

2012 R2: Create mirror of striped volume

$

I'm trying to confirm whether or not the new Storage Manager in 2012 R2 is going to allow us to do uninterrupted storage migrations from one SAN to another.  With Symantec Storage Foundation we are able to present LUNs from the new array, mirror our volumes to the new LUNs, break the "old" mirror off and remove the LUNs from the old array.

At this point it doesn't LOOK like I can do this with Storage Manager.  I have presented 5 test LUNs, created a pool, a virtual disk (5-column stripe), and a volume.  I then presented 5 new LUNs, but I cannot figure out how to create a mirror to these new LUNs.  There just doesn't seem to be an appropriate option for doing this.

Is this possible via cmd tool?

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

From a Windows 2008 R2 Server,

c:\> net use * \\<winserver2008>\ipc$

System error 66 has occurred.

The network resource type is not correct.

c:\> net use * \\<winserver2008>\admin$

Drive Z: is now connected to \\<winserver2008\admin$.

However, running the above commands from a Windows 2003 Server, I have no problem at all.

Does anyone has any idea?
