Access Based Enumeration not working Windows 2012 R2 Datacenter

I am having a hard time figuring out why Access Based Enumeration is not working for me.  I have set and re-set the settings and I'm still able to see folders I should not. I do get denied access on folders I don't have access to.  I have checked effective access which say everything is denied to me but I can still see the folder(s) listed. 

I have the share permissions set to authenticated Users - Full Control

I have the NTFS permissions set to the correct Dept. Groups. - Modify, and Domain Admins - Full Control and Guests - Deny Full Control

Any idea's?

I believe I had found the issue.  It was a rights issue with a group that added to the local admins group.

Copy Local User Data from Multiple Computers to a File Server

Just recently acquired a new company with 20 standalone computers (desktops and laptops, Windows 7 and 8.1), that are part of a WORKGROUP, with no local server at all. This site will be getting a network upgrade, and will soon have a VPN tunnel to the Main Office (but not until cutover weekend, a month and a half in the future).  Now, all these computers have local user accounts, and some are shared computers, so copying data to a centralized location is going to be bothersome (especially if people keep modifying/creating data everyday).  Not sure what to do...

Would anyone advise on what to do in this case?   I'd like to minimize downtime for these users while migrating them to our domain.

Windows Server Backup - 0x80042407, seriously?

I installed server 2008 on a test server with 4x250GB drives in a RAID5 array.
Windows was installed on a 60GB partition, the rest of the array was left as free space.
After installing updates and drivers, I decided that I wanted a RAID10 array. 
This would give me a chance to test the restore functionality of Windows Server Backup.

I did a full backup with Windows Server Backup to a network location.
After reconfiguring the RAID array I started the recovery process.

Here is the issue.  right when the restore should start, I get an error....

The Windows Complete PC Restore operation failed.
Error details: The disk that is set as active in BIOS is too small to recover the original system disk.  Replace the disk with a larger one and retry the restore operation. (0x80042407)

I've tried creating partitions of all sizes and leaving the disk blank, same error.
I even set the disk as the first boot device in BIOS.

I've read elsewhere that the disk must be the same size or larger.  That just seems like a bad April fools joke to me.
Can anyone give me some insight on this issue?

Network share with red X via GPO

Hello all,

I got a hughe problem regarding the connection of my network shares.

We got 5 shares which are deployed via GPO. The deployment works but the shares were shown with a red cross. Every option inside the GPO for connection shares, like override and create tried already.

Can someone help me with this problem? I dont want to switch back to an oldschool logon script...

DFSR Error 9028

Hi all,

I tried to set up a DFSR with to 2008R2 servers. The only error i can find in the log file in c:\windows\debug is:

DFS Replication permission issue on read-only member

I have two member servers. One is a primary running 2008 SP2. The other is a clustered file share on WS2012 R2. The non-primary is set to read-only.

I can't access many folders locally on the read-only server. I've verified permissions. I've tried with a local admin and a domain admin account. None of them are being allowed access despite permissions allowing it.

1. I can access them on the primary.

2. I can access them if I go in through a share on the read-only member  (\\servername\shares\sharehere\)

3. I can access them if I go in through the administrative share (\\servername\d$\sharehere) on the read-only member

Any ideas? I can't seem to find any differences between folders I can access and those I can't. This is causing issues creating duplicate shares between the members; mostly in that I can't.

Can Windows Search be used to search tags in non Microsoft (pdf) documents stored on a 2008 r2 server?

Our server has the indexing service installed, which so far doesn't seem to search within non Microsoft documents.

Will "Windows Search Service" being installed on the 2008 server overcome this?

If so, on Windows 2008 R2 server can i uninstall the indexing service to install the "Windows Search Service" without causing other issues?

Reference for Dynamic Disks and MBR Partitions

I've been trying to find a reference for how Dynamic Disks work with MBR an partition style and haven't found one.  Specifically, I want to know how a partitioning style like MBR which allows only four partitions to allow 2000 dynamic disk volumes on it.  Are there such things as primary partitions in this scenario?  Is there a master boot record on any of the volumes?  How does it work? Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Problems setting up Remote Web Access in Windows Storage Server 2008 R2

We just bought a WD Sentinel DX4000 Storage Server and went through the Remote Web Access wizard.  It setup the router just fine but when we got to the setup your domain name we have been having headaches ever since.  We chose the option to use our own domain name, which we have registered through GoDaddy.  It then showed that yes, our provider was GoDaddy but then it told us we needed to update our service with GoDaddy so we clicked the"Go to GoDaddy.com" button and it sent us to a page to purchase an SSL certificate.  So, we did that but then had issues with it not being able to be managed in our GoDaddy account.  So, I went into the domain name with GoDaddy and purchased a certificate there and got it setup on the domain name with GoDaddy.

The problem is that when I try to go through the wizard again to set up the domain name I still have to click the goDaddy button to move to the next page where I type my domain name, username, and password with GoDaddy.  I setup the remote extension in the A records with GoDaddy as remote.mydomain.com, and put in my username and password with GoDaddy.  After I click next it tries to connect to the domain name service provider but then gives me the following error message over and over:

The domain name was not set up for your server.  Wait a few minutes and run the wizard again.

An unexpected or unknown problem occurred.  Please wait a few minutes, and then try again.

Well, I have tried this several times and am about to start pulling my hair out.  Can anyone please tell me what I may be doing wrong?

Windows 2012 R2 Installer directory grows 20G in 3 months

The installer directory continues to grow without any signs of stopping.  All that is being added are Windows patches and updates.  Is there a way to cleanup old patches?  Is 20G growth normal in such a short time?  Is there a way to troubleshoot this growth if it is not normal?  Most people are complaining if it gets to 2G.  I can't imagine that this is OK.  Is it?  The server was built only 6 months ago.  I know that I can just add memory, but I did that 3 months ago already.

Migrating from Win2012R2 to WIn2008R2 - Local Users and File Permissions

I have a Win2012R2 Workgroup server and the goal is to migrate to a new WIn2008R2 workgroup server

I can´t convert the source .VHD VM to a new .VMDK VM because the target system it´s a ESX 4.1, incompatible with WIN2012R2

I need to migrate files and its permissions AND local users and groups to "replicate" the environment

I can´t convert the .VHD VM to .VMDK beucase the target system it´s a ESX 4.1, incompatible with WIN2012R2

I´m thinking in using firts the server migration tools and after that, migrate files with robocopy or subinacl

Viruses and DFS-R

Hello!

I'm new at working with a  DFS-R environment and I have a come across a problem where my servers won't install updates because of a current virus infection. After some thorough clean up work it seems that I have clean out most of the viruses, however, these servers are file shares configured with DFS-R so I was wondering if the viruses could have been replicated to other DFS-R member servers? Our replication is set to replicate all files across all servers which leads me to think that the viruses have also been replicated? Also I'm new to this company and I've been assigned to deal with this virus issue so any help would be very much appreciated, thanks!!

iSCSI Target Initiator IDs malfunction?

On Windows Server 2012 R2, I have setup an iSCSI target and have allowed the following list of Initiators to connect:

IPAddress: 192.168.0.102 (iSCSI Initiator)
IPAddress: 192.168.0.109 (iSCSI Target)

No IQN has been listed, only IPAddress.

On the initiator, I make a quick connect to 192.168.0.109 (the target) but while I get a response right away, I get nothing to connect to. The Quick Connect windows says: "No Targets available for Login using Quick Connect."

If I telnet to 192.168.0.109 port 3260, I get through right away so I know the target is reachable.

Then I try to connect from the target (from 192.168.0.109 to 192.168.0.109) itself and I get a connection right away. Everything works.

So, why can't the iSCSI Initiator from 192.168.0.102 get a connection?

I have tried to add the IQN from the initiator to the target and retried the connect and now the initiator can connect. Something is weird here. Why is IPAddress not enough to connect remotely when it is enough to connect locally?

Then I thought perhaps the listed IQN is allowed from the listed IPAddress'es so I connected from a third pc (192.168.0.101) and it connected just fine (assuming the same IQN as 192.168.0.102 used).

What purpose does IPAdress have? It only seems to work locally.

One specific detail. There are 2 netcards in all pc's, one for 192.168.0.x and one for 192.168.34.x. Perhaps this is the issue so I specicied 192.168.0.102 as source IP on the Discover Portal setup for the initiator, but that changed nothing. Either that source IP isn't passed along correctly or the target throws the source IP away and uses the target IP instead. Bug?

At any rate, specifying IPAddress has no value whatsoever.

It seems the only way to secure the iscsi target is to use the firewall for port 3260.

Failed Hard Drive, Mirrored Virtual Disk Not Repairing

I am running Server 2012 R2 with Storage Spaces. I have a Storage Pool with 4 drives and 1 virtual disk with all drives in the mirror configuration.

One of the drives recently failed hard and was causing the system to bluescreen. After finding and removing the drive I noticed the Virtual Disk was detached. I tried attaching it with an error. I had a spare drive in the computer that was not in the storage pool so I added it to the storage pool and retied the old failed drive and tried to run a repair all to no luck. For some reason it is not adding the new drive (PhysicalDisk4) to the virtual disk.

I will admit this is my first dealing with a failed drive in Storage Spaces and I'm afraid of loosing data, any help on how to correct the situation would be greatly appreciated.

I've attached pictures of what is happening in Storage Spaces for further info.

Seagate external hard disk RAW file system error

Have you ever got a RAW file system problem with your Seagate external hard disk? In fact, a couple days ago, I encountered this problem and always was asked to format before accessing anything inside. However, last week, I had transferred many videos, files and pictures of my favorite animated satires to this hard disk and had not found time to upload them to my online storage. I really don’t want to search and gather these stuffs one by one again. Do you have any way for me to rescue them back from this drive? Do I have to format this disk to fix that RAW problem? Any answer here could be greatly appreciated!

NFS Server: Use 32bit cookies / fileids in Windows 2012R2?

Is it possible to disable 64 bit cookies or enable 32 bit cookies within a Windows 2012 R2 NFS Server?

We are performing a migration, and the current NFS client (solaris 10) is passing back the 64bit fileid / cookie to the application.  Unfortunately the application is 32bit and it promptly fails to see the file.  Upgrading the application isn't an option at this time (as it works on the old linux NFS we are migrating from), so was looking for alternative.

Another alternative is NFS V2, but would rather see what else we could do.

Recover Files - DFS Deleted

Hi,

Someone in our office ran an incorrect robocopy command which ended up in alot of information being deleted from a DFS.

The changes were made on the source folder which was not up to date with the destination folder so I assume all our missing files and folders are hiding in the Staging folder. I guess first is, is this assumption correct.

Assuming that is correct how can I got about trying to get these files and folders. Unfortunately our Backup to Tape and Previous either have not worked or were too old to capture the changes I need. I cant seem to find what I need in the Conflict and Deleted folder etc etc.

We are running Server 2008.

Issue with Cross Forest Folder Access - Sid Filtering Off - Inheritance disabled

Hi,

Wondered if anyone could offer an opinion on an issue we are seeing with cross forest access to folders that have inheritance disabled.

We have a two way forest trust set up and SID filtering turned off.

UserA has an account in Domain A and has been ADMT transferred to Domain B with SID history.

UserA is a member of DomainA\GlobalGroup1 and DomainA\GlobalGroup2

File Server A is located in Domain A and is providing file share services.

The following NTFS permissions have been set. (The Share is Everyone Full Control):

Folder1 (DomainA\GlobalGroup1 / RW)

      Folder 1a (DomainA\GlobalGroup1 / RW)

      Folder 1b - Inheritance Turned Off (DomainA\GlobalGroup2 / RW)

When UserA logs onto workstation using domain A credentials they can r/w all folders. When user logs onto workstation using Domain B they cannot list or R/W 'Folder 1b'. They can list /R/W 'Folder 1' and 'Folder 1a.'

Clearly SID filtering / history is working etc. If I re-enabled inheritance on Folder 1B they can then access it fine.

Would anyone be able to advise what may be going wrong with this scenario.

DFS Implementation

Hi,

We are planning to implement DFS with Replication on Windows 2008 R2.

Can you please help in following ?

1) If we use any hardware WAN Optimizer or WAN Accellerator will it speed up DFS Replication or it will slow it down?

2) how WAN Optimizers monitor DFS traffic ? do they track any TCP Pattern or sequence ?

Also is there any way to speedup Replication ? we have 3MB MPLS link between India and our Head office in UK.

DFS - multiple folder targets not working correctly

Hello,

I have tried creating at least 2 dozen DFS namespaces, none which have worked as needed.  Here is an overview:

On my "DFS Server", I create a domain based namespace.  No problems during creation.  We will call this "namespace".

I add a new folder to the namespace, and assign it two (2) folder targets.  I don't get any errors and things "look" good.  Both targets are shared properly and have the correct permissions.  We will call these "target1" and "target2".

So, the naming convention is:  DOMAIN.AD.MD\namespace - which SHOULD contain "target1" and "target2".

On the DFS server itself, I run the \\DOMAIN.AD.MD\namespace and it displays only "target1"

On my workstation (which is part of the domain/AD) I run the \\DOMAIN.AD.MD\namespace and it only displays "target2"

As mentioned earlier, both "shares/targets" have the exact same permissions, which are correct.  I've even taken off all permissions on the targets with the same results.

I've tried both standalone and domain based namespaces, both with the same problem.

I've seen many similar posts, which none seem to give an answer or a fix of any sort (unless I overlooked it).

Any help or guidance anyone can give is appreciated.
