Staging in DFS Replication

Hi, in my organization there are 2 file servers at different locations. For the test purpose , I created folder with many files in it in both the servers and applied DFS replication. Replication is working fine in this.

But, when I am applying replication in main folder which contains many sub-folders like Accounting, Marketing, HR ect.  in both the servers. Replication is not working. In event logs it is showing errors. I have following questions, please answer me as soon as possible. Thank you in advance

1] I need to replicate around 500GB data from each replicated folder in both the servers. I leave the Staging size default as 4GB. Do I need to increase it? and how much should I increase it ?

2] I generated Diagnostics report (Health report) in that Replicated folder and reports says errors in both the servers.

Server 1 :  error 1 :

DFS replication error, event ID 4004

Additional Information:
Error: 9098 (A tombstoned content set deletion has been scheduled)

error 2 :

DFSR - Content skipped by replication, event ID 11004

DFS Replication does not replicate certain files in the replicated folders listed above because they have temporary attribute set, or they are symbolic links . This problem is affecting at least 35 files in 1 replicated folders (up to 100 occurences per replicated folder are reported). Event ID: 11004

Server 2 :

DFSR - Content skipped by replication, event ID 11004

Please help me solve this issue

User Drive & Home Drive - Creator Owner "Full Access" not applying as expected.

I have a "User Drive" that has the following permissions:

Administrators and System: Full Access: This folder, subfolders and files
Authenticated Users: Read/Traverse/Create Folders: This folder only
Creator Owner: Full Access: Subfolders and files only

I have a GPO that creates a folder (under user context) as \\server\users$\%username% and followed by another \\server\users$\%username%\home.

I would expect that on creating that first folder it would then receive full access permissions on it for all subfolders and files. But instead the permissions are configured on it as Inherited and for that user: Full Access: This folder only. Same result on the Home folder as well.

What am I missing here? Why is the Creator Owner permission not creating an explicit Full Access for Subfolders and Files on that User Drive then being inherited? Basically now all the users home drives are unreadable by the user... Fucking nightmare when every step of this makes sense to have worked.

5th time in the last week simple fucking things from MS that should work have failed and been egg and shit on my face. So fucking sick of this this week has convinced me to look elsewhere than IT... MS are the devil and all these tool and policies are fucking nightmares.

Issue With DFS Namespace

Hi,

Could someone please help me.

We have a DFS namespace in which we have 6500+ DFS links hosted on WIN 2008 R2 Server and we have 20+ Namespace servers.

The problem is that when user tries to connect to our namespace they can see all the 6500+ links or not even a single link.

It is an access-based enumarated design so user should be able to see only the links for which they have access.

Please help.

DFS Root Folder Empty after mapping

Hi ,

I have DFS Namespace created in a cluster mode across Windows server 2008 R2 in my environment.

Some users have the problem that their Shared Folder (DFS Root Folder like "\\abc-intranet.net\MyDFSroot" is Empty or Sometime it shows all the Shared folders (in thousands) within DFS root , While they can access the Shared Folders to which they have been given access by using their UNC paths without any issues.

Could anyone suggest why the Mapping of DFS root doesnot show any folders to users to which they have access? Where might be the bug?

Generally the mapping of DFS root Folder should contain all the Shared folders to which the users have access to.

Any Bright ideas or suggestions are highly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi  all

I had enabled file server using windows server 2008 sp2 and given folder access to  our Active directory users and  using the same.

I  need to enable the folder auditing  for particular folder  like who done the  changes, deleted the files etc.,

Is it possible to do the  folder auditing  in windows 2008 server itself? it yes. how to achieve that. how do I found the  folder access logs?

Please help me on this.

DFSR: Is it ok to empty the PreExisting folders after initial sync is complete and data is verified?

$

We have pre-seeded hundreds of GB of data on our hub server, and several GB of data ended up in the 'PreExisting' folder for each replicated folder.  Initial sync is complete for all of them and I want to verify it's ok to completely remove the contents of the Preexisting folder (leaving the Preexisting folder there, of course).  Also, I did try deleting one folder from it and explorer doesn't seem to respond.  Perhaps it's just a resource issue on a very busy DFSR hub server?  Is there a WMI method for pruning the Preexisting contents like there is for the conflictanddeleted folders?

Optimize-Volume not working on Bitlocker protected Volume?

Hello im just evaluating Storage Spaces and encountered the problem that i can not use the optimize-volume command from powershell for my storage space once i encrypt it with bitlocker. i can reproduce this easily: enable bitlocker = optimize-volume fails -> disable bitlocker = optimize-volume works -> enable bitlocker again = optimize-volume fails again.

Optimize failure:

PS C:\Windows\system32> Optimize-Volume -DriveLetter f -Verbose

bitlocker turned off and the same command gives:

is this expected behavior? i found nowhere information that bitlocker would obstruct storage spaces in any way.

Need help locating cached server files on client computer

$

This is my first time posting here, so hopefully this is the right place to request help with this problem.

What I need help with is this. I have a network with a Windows 2012 file server with mostly Windows 8 clients. The users in Active Directory have their Home folders directed to a path on the server (mapped "U:" drive in the user's AD Profile tab) and then their "Documents" folder is redirected to their server shared folder (So their "Documents" folder is the same location as the mapped "U:" drive). In the past file servers have been replaced with different server names, so the Home folder needs to be reconfigured to the new server's path (In the AD User's profile). Unfortunately, some users had not been reconfigured in AD and still had the now non existent server path directing to their local "Documents" folder. However, they could still open "Documents" and edit and create new folders and files via a cache of some sort. My question is where is the location of those cached files? What happens is when the error is discovered and the path in their AD profile is redirected to the new correct server path, they lose all of their documents that were created and located in the local cached or old server location (obviously, the user is not connected to the old server, the local computer just stores the files somewhere waiting to sync with the now non existent server). They just disappear. Where are those files located on the local computer (Windows 8) and are they recoverable?

I am getting three VSS errors when WS2008 backup executes.  I have no idea where to begin to look for the problem.
The error (Event 8193) is:

Hyperv-V Cluster with JBOD and Storage Spaces

$

Hi

I'm trying to build a Hyper-V cluster using a cheap JBOD for storage and some old servers, but I'm having a hard time getting my planned configuration validated.

My planned configuration might be flawed and impossible, so I'm hoping someone can give me some pointers.

This is what I'm thinking:

The cluster should consist of my 4 HP DL380G7 serveres with Windows Server 2012 R2 and connected to an Intel JBOD2224S2DP JBOD.

Intel JBOD: http://ark.intel.com/products/74545/Intel-Storage-System-JBOD2224S2DP
The SAS HBA's in all 4 servers could be Intels RS25GB008
SAS HBA/Controller: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/servers/raid/raid-controller-rs25gb008.html

In the JBOD I want to put a couple of SSD's and a mix of different SAS HDD's and use the tiering and dedublication features in 2012 R2's Storage Spaces and configure cluster volumes for VHDX's and VM configs.

I don't see any possibility to run dual SAS to each server, since the JBOD only has 4 external 8088 SAS ports. (and 2 for connecting another JBOD on top) Can't see that I can upgrade to 8 external SAS ports..?
But since the 4 servers are in clustered HA setup, I don't see the single SAS connection as a huge problem.

Later on, I would like to add a second identical JBOD enclosure. As I see it, that would make it possible to connect SAS redundant to all 4 servers, or to extend the cluster with another 4 nodes.

Is this possible at all?

Cannot rename newly created folders, but delete or move.

Hello,

I'm having a problem renaming new folders in one directory only.
The folder is a sitting on a file server which is apart of the file server cluster Windows 2008 R2.

Let say I have a volume mounted on X:

I have the following folders

X:\Test
X:\Test\Desktop
X:\Test\Favourite

If I create a new folder under X:\Test\Desktop that will be called New Folder by default. After the creation the system will not let me rename it (folder or file in use by another process), however I can move it or delete it without problem.

I have checked if the file is locked already with different software, did not help, folder not locked.

I have admin rights, I'm the owner also.

I can create and rename folders on the same driver anywhere except from the Desktop folder. File server has been rebooted and failed over to other node in the cluster, but the problem still stand.  Have no antivirus installed.

Any idea what is the problem? Where should I look?

Thanks!

why does event 2212 occur following every restart?

$

Every time I reboot (expected or not) my 2008R2 DFS servers (20 of them), there is an event 2212, unexpected shutdown. Normally this is followed by a 2214 but sometimes a 2213, which requires a manual rebuild of the dfsr database. Some of my folders are extremely large and it take hours to completely rebuild the DFS database. Why does the OS not know the dfsr state and/or why does dfsr not know the OS is shutting down? i HAVE to do my security updates at least once every month on over 300 servers, what can i do to eliminate this unexpected situation?

Windows 2008 R2 server stops responding to SMB2 Command: NegotiateProtocol

$

Hi

We have a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 (6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601) serving as file server. Clients are Windows XP and Windows 7.

The files are being served happily and all of a sudden the server stops continuing on NEW SMB2 connections.

For ex,

A. time0 : connection 1 (and all connections before it) came in and is successfully established and is being served

B. time1: I assume something happens to the internals of server

C. time1: connection 2 comes in and tcp handshake is successful.

D. time+1msec: client sends SMB2 Negotiate

E. time+200 msec: server sends an ACK

F. time+59~sec: Server sends a RST

G. Now all the new connections from same or different clients have TCP handshake go thru and a reset from the server on NegotiateRequest!!!!

H. XP clients work fine to same server means SMBv1 or server resource is not an issue

I. If a client had an ongoing connection from BEFORE B (say connection 1). It still gets served but new connections get reset.

J. The only work around is to reboot the server!! Until it happens again!!

This sounds like something on Windows 2008 R2 SMB2 stack which goes into a state where it intentionally stops taking new connection. Some kind of anti-DDOS behavior or something??

Appreciate any help

SMB Error code 67: STATUS_SHARING_VIOLATION

Hello. I have a client who is experiencing problems with an application running on a Windows 2008 R2 server. I've done packet captures of a successful application launch and a failed launch. Here's the error (packets copied from MS Network Monitor):

1725SMB:C; Nt Create Andx, FileName = \ICONS\FONTS.SP211:50:14 AM 4/5/20139.2890620System10.10.10.310.10.10.1SMB{SMB:116, NbtSS:7, TCP:6, IPv4:5}

1811SMB:R; Nt Create Andx - NT Status: System - Error, Code = (67) STATUS_SHARING_VIOLATION11:50:15 AM 4/5/201310.3007810System10.10.10.110.10.10.3SMB{SMB:116, NbtSS:7, TCP:6, IPv4:5}

The server is IP 10.10.10.1, the client is 10.10.10.3.

The application vendor says we're the only ones experiencing this problem. It happens intermittently; the app may launch successfully 100 times in a row before failing. Once it fails there's a good chance it will fail again. It fails more frequently later in the day when more people are using the app.

This error never occurred prior to migrating the app from a Windows 2003 server to 2008 R2. We upgraded the application at the same time as the migration.

Is there anything I can change in the server to resolve this problem?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I have a weekly shadow copy set on a volume and specified a different drive for the weekly shadow copies.   Although there are plenty of free space, the number of shadows only goes back to April 2015.... free space is about 40% of total space.   Why is it over writing?  It is set to unbound, unlimited.  Total size of 15GB with 8.3GB free used only for shadow copies....

Diff area for NTFS volume created on ReFS in VSS is not working properly

$

Hello,

I have a issue regarding VSS differential snapshot related with ReFS volume on Windows Server 2012. The scenario is mentioned below:

I have one NTFS volume (V1_NTFS (G:)) and one ReFS volume(V2_REFS (H:)).

Now I have created shadow storage of V1_NTFS volume on V2_REFS volume using following command:

C:\>vssadmin add shadowstorage /for=G: /on=H: /maxsize=20%

Then I created multiple shadows of V1_NTFS(G:) with following commands:

C:\>vssadmin create shadow /for=G:

Suppose I have created 4 shadows as snap1, snap2, snap3, snap4. Now the problem is that whenever I revert to a shadows, lets saysnap3, then snap3 and snap4 shadows should get deleted and older ones(snap1,snap2) should remain there which is the expected behaviour. But here, in this case, after successful revert tosnap3 all shadows (even older ones get deleted.) So the question is that: is this a known issue and is expected behavior with this type of scenario or is this a bug with ReFS?

Or in simple way, can diff area be on ReFS volume for a NTFS volume? is this supported configuration ?

I have 2 PCIe ssd cards, I would like to put them in RAID 0 so I can also use them as the "virtual memory" disk for windows and benefit from the speed increase that RAID 0 brings (writing on several ssds in //).

- I can use the default "windows raid 0 software" as "virtual memory" (but I believe this one isn't optimize to use 2 or more drives in //, correct? so I do not get the benefit of speed increase that raid 0 brings).

- It seems I can not use a "Storage Space raid 0" as virtual memory?

Is there a way to do it?

Sincerely,

w

w.
