Bitlocker: Encrypt Used Disk space only vs Full encryption

$

Hi all,

A customer of mine is looking to deploy Windows 10 in combination with Bitlocker.

Looking on technet and other forums, I've read that the option "Used Diskspace Only" would be the recommended deployment method for new computers. But you'll still have the risk that previous data located on this disk might be recoverable using special phorensic tools.

Thanks to this forum post I was able to receive the information that the command "WipeFreeSpace" could be used after installing the computer with bitlocker in "Used Diskspace Only" mode.

I still have the following questions :

  • If this computer has previously been active in production and is just re-deployed for a new owner.. Can the old data (before the format) be recovered (if WipeFreeSpace wouldn't be used)? Is this only applicable if the disk wasn't encrypted with bitlocker before the format or doesn't it make a difference?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks in advance. I have a mess on my hand

they have the same structure. I need to merge the two into \\activeservername\newshare with the files taking precedent that have been modified the latest . I have a real mess on my hands with a group using both shares as their files and I need a good way to merge the two together. thanks so much .

Error message 'System.IO.IOException: Invalid Signature' when the C# program tries to access a file under a DFS mechanism folder

Hi there

Some of the end-users access our webswite and got the 'System.IO.IOException: Invalid Signature' exception. Hard to figure out why this 'Invalid Signature' error comes out.

Environment : Windows 2012 + DFS feature enabled. The C# program tried to access the file under the DFS folder.

Following is the exception stack:
System.Web.HttpUnhandledException (0x80004005): Exception of type 'System.Web.HttpUnhandledException' was thrown. ---> System.IO.IOException: Invalid Signature.    at System.IO.__Error.WinIOError(Int32 errorCode, String maybeFullPath)    at System.IO.FileStream.Init(String path, FileMode mode, FileAccess access, Int32 rights, Boolean useRights, FileShare share, Int32 bufferSize, FileOptions options, SECURITY_ATTRIBUTES secAttrs, String msgPath, Boolean bFromProxy, Boolean useLongPath, Boolean checkHost)    at System.IO.FileStream..ctor(String path, FileMode mode, FileAccess access, FileShare share, Int32 bufferSize, FileOptions options, String msgPath, Boolean bFromProxy)    at System.IO.FileStream..ctor(String path, FileMode mode, FileAccess access).

Can anyone please shed a light on this issue.

Thanks.

Can't figure out permissions ACL

$

This is a brand new 2012R2 AD environment and I have a test user that is only a member of domain users.  The folder structure I will use for an example is \\server\data-share\accounting.  Domain users have NTFS read-only permissions to the data-share folder so that they can list the contents, however, this is applied to the data-share folder only, not sub-folders/files so if you look at the permissions on the accounting folder, you will see no ACL entries for domain users.

So here is the issue, when I look at effective access on the accounting folder for the test user, they have 'read permissions' and 'change permissions' rights (see pic).  I cannot figure out where this is coming from.  Any ideas?

Hyper-V mapping WWN to SCSI ID

In a non-Hyper-V guest OS, I can find the FC mapping by executing "fcinfo /mapping".  If I try to execute this in a VM (2012 R2 host and guest OS), I get the following:

C:\Users\Administrator>fcinfo /mapping
ai: 0, pwn: c0:03:ff:e4:23:c4:00:1c
get mappings (size) failed status:
Unknown Error

I've root caused this failure to the VFC miniport driver not supporting the MSFC_HBAFCPInfo WMI Class.  This class exposes the GetFcpTargetMapping method which I imagine fcinfo /mapping is using.  This is the PowerShell output when querying this class (works on physical FC, not virtual FC).

PS C:\Users\Administrator> Get-WmiObject -class MSFC_HBAFCPInfo -namespace "root\WMI"
Get-WmiObject : Not supported
At line:1 char:1
+ Get-WmiObject -class MSFC_HBAFCPInfo -namespace "root\WMI"
+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    + CategoryInfo          : InvalidOperation: (:) [Get-WmiObject], ManagementException
    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : GetWMIManagementException,Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.GetWmiObjectCommand

Are there any documented limitations running fcinfo in a Hyper-V guest?

Admin issues Server 2012r2

After installing 2012r2 eval and creating the admin account (default), everything I have copied and accessed while logged in as Admin, can not be accessed/executed by any other user, even with admin rights. See below.

As Admin: Create directory, copy over EXE, execute EXE and everything works.

As user with admin rights: go to same directory, execute same EXE, get runtime error 217.

As user no admin rights: go to same directory, execute same EXE, get runtime error 217.

All of this works just fine in my 2008r2 servers. This is a serious deal breaker.

Disable Work Folders client free disk space check?

I have 3 TB Work Folder and I had todisable client side because of error.

Now I try to re-enable it, but I get "This location doesn't have enough free space. Choose a different location or clear 2,68 TB of space on this drive".

Client and Server sides have same files, so do I really need to delete all my client side files and resync everything?

Thanks!

FSRM Tools - Unable to install on Windows 2012 R2

Hello all,

I'm facing an issue with Windows Server 2012 R2 X FSRM Tools. When I try to add the feature on the Wizard (or through PowerShell), I get the same error message:

"Update FSRM-Management of package FSRM-All failed to be turned on. Status: 0x800f0922."

I've noticed on "https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2973343" that if we try to install the feature on a RODC we have issues. I've already removed the feature - I don'tt need the server to be a RODC. Still, I'm not able to install FSRM Tools.

Does anyone face the same issue? Any fixes?

Thanks in advance,

Gabriel

We have windows server 2008 R2 server.

Full control permission is removed and read only  is selected in Everyone group from a shared folder, while administrator and power user have full control of the same shared folder.

But the application can't be accessed in both Administrator and power user domain. An error message appers with insufficient privelege.

Can't modify full control in Everyone group now, Kindly advise us how to revert back Everyone group with full control permission.

Losing netwerk for a split second multiple times a day.

Hi

I'm losing my network drive connection to W2008R2 server several times a day for a split second.
I know this because my access database gets errors each time when I leave it open. IT makes no diffrence if mapped or unc.
When open the mapped (or UNC) right after the access database gets an error, the drive is marked red but when I click on it it's instantly get green and I get my filelisting.

I never had this issue before.

It looks like the autodisconnect system from windows server does not see I have files open on the server.

DFS-N Root Limits

Hi,

Does anyone know if there is a limit to the number of DFS namespace roots?  I can't find any figure to say if there is a limit so I would assume there isn't one but that doesn't sit well with me.

Hi all,

Since yesterday, my server alerts me about a NTFS file system corruption on a volume that seems not exist.

In fact, on the server that should host this volume, when I run "mountvol" command, the volume does not appear...

I don't understand...

Thank you.

Win2008 Backup Failure: Volume Shadow copy operation failed for backup volumes with following error code '2155348129'

I recently performed a clean install of Win2008 x32 and have been trying for several days to get the Windows Backup program to work on my system drive C: (hardware RAID 5 - Intel Embedded Server RAID II on S5000PSLSAS with 3- 146GB 15K drives. I updated all drivers/bios from Intel before the install).

I have a removable SATA drive (500GB) which the Windows Backup program cleared for backups. I later assigned drive X: so I could see what was being placed on the drive (e.g. X:\WindowsImageBackup\APICELLA\Backup 2008-08-18 015309).

These are the things that do work using the Backup Once Option:

1) Backing up 100GB from an IDE Drive B: - no errors. Data appears on X:

2) Backup up 100GB separate RAID Array D: (I have two separate RAID arrays on this machine) - no errors. Data appears on X:

3) Problem: Everytime I chose to backup C: I get this error message: Backup started at '8/18/2008 1:55:08 AM' failed as Volume Shadow copy operation failed for backup volumes with following error code '2155348129'. Please rerun backup once issue is resolved.

Symbolic links and Client for NFS

I am trying to integrate a Solaris NIS and AD environment.
I've got Client for NFS and User Name Mapping installed on Server 2003 R2 and WinXP Pro, and have primary storage running from the NIS domain.  I'm able to map and connect to the NFS shares successfully, except symbolic links don't even show up, let alone work.  Is there anything special I need to do to view symbolic links?

Thanks,
Pat

SMB file transfer issue on windows 8

Issue: When I transfer the file from UNIX OS to Windows Server 2012 (SMB 2.0 or 3.0) system using SMB (Samba), the file gets transfer but contains of file dose not (Only empty file size of 0 KB gets created on windows Server 2012).

Additional Info:

  • File transfer from UNIX to Windows Server 2003 (SMB 1.0) works fine.
  • Command: Smbclient //backroom/e -Utest%abc -c "put /tmp/test.txt abc\abcdata\test.txt"
  • This produces the following error:
    • Error writing file:  ERRSRV - ERRerror (non-specific error code.)
    • 0.0kb/s transferred
  • There is not logging in Event log (System and application) in Server 2012 regarding this failure.

How to enable SMB RAW mode on Windows 2012R2 Server File Sharing?

$

We are currently migrating old Win2003 servers to Windows 2012R2 server, but they need to do file sharing with old Windows 98SE controllers / industrial pc's.
We have added & enabled CIFS/SMB1 functionality in the server manager (roles / features), and changed some local policies to allow file sharing between Win98SE & Win2012R2. This works fine now.
However, we notice a large speed difference between file transfer between Win98SE & Win2003 and Win98SE & Win2012R2.
I looked into the SMB traffic with wireshark, and the only difference in the way the files are being exchanged is that Windows 2003 supports RAW mode for SMB (which is used by Win98SE), and Windows 2012R2 does not support it by default.
I tried to enable/disable this on Win2012R2 server through the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\EnableRaw    (0 or 1), but neither setting made a difference (alway rebooted the server after changing settings to make sure they were applied correctly.

Please see the attached screenshots of both Windows 2003 & 2012R2 SMB capablities in the SMB negotation response capture.

Win2003 SMB Negotiation Response

Win2012R2 SMB Negotiation Response

Does anybody know how to enable/disable SMB RAW mode on Windows 2012R2?

Thank you in advance for your help!!

Hello,

My System Volume Information folder on my Win 2008 R2 is over 300GB, total partition size is 3.7 TB. I'm using this partition to store third party backup software files. maybe a 100 files, that is all what this drive has. When I tried to delete some older System Volume Information files, nothing happens. I do not get permission denied or anything!! How can I reduce the size of this folder? Shadow copies is disabled on all partitions.

DFS cluster migration to VNXe CIFS server

hi team,

we have a DFS cluster and users are pointed to domain based UNC

Domian.Local\Root\department\UserFolder

note: each users directly mapped to his own folder manually not GPO not script around 1000 Users :(

now we have new CIFS server names HQCIFS.Domain.Local\Root\department\Userfolder

any idea to after doing the migration to keep the folder's mapping as is without re-mapping it again, meanwhile to connect with the same name?

i'm thing to rename the CIFS server to be same DFS server cluster name after disabling the cluster but if i did this

users will access \\HQCIFS.domain.local\Root\... whoever we need it to be \\domain.local\Root

any idea's?
