Users Unable to Access/Save Files With Full Permissions

$

Hello,

We have several users who are unable to save and/or access certain files within their home directory.  The users had no issues on Friday to access/save these files, no permissions have been changed prior to the incident (only after the incident for testing) and no updates have been applied to the machines the users are using to access the server.

Things I have checked:

  1. Users have Full Permissions over the location/file they are trying to access
  2. Users are Owners for the "Share" permissions on the folder they are trying to save to
  3. Removed Inherited permissions and tried to access without success
  4. Restarted client machines to no avail
  5. With a specific file, I tried to move it to other locations within the shared folder, to no avail
  6. Moving the file to the desktop seems to allow access; moving back encounters the same issues
  7. This is happening on two different servers (Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 2003 and on two different domains

We are planning a server restart tonight when users stop working, but can't think of anything else that could be the cause of the issue.

We are getting the "Access Denied.  Contact your Administrator" message with the files that can't be opened.

Reading Local File from Java Servlet within Tomcat 7

I am upgrading from Server 2003 to 2012.  A Java Servlet that worked in 2003 is being upgraded to 2012, Tomcat 7, and JDK 8. I access the local C: drive file with Java Servlet code. I get the error msg Error: java.io.FileNotFoundException (the system cannot find the file specified).  Is there a way to give rights to Tomcat 7 to read from a local drive?  Tomcat is running as a Service.

Good Afternoon,

I am hoping someone can guide me in the path of figuring this out. I have a Root CA, templates, key recovery agent, dra. EFS works, but whats the best means for multiple user shares? Is this possible? I assume it is. I can't seem to find any "definitive" answer. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you

Hi to all guys ,

I have a problem with one web site . Its hosted on IIS (windows server 2012) . Hi is acting strange.
Just people from our company can open it just with domain.com .If you try with www.domain.com locally in our company cant open.

If you try this out of our company externally (without www) you get just a blank page,
If you try externally with www.domain.com you get "server not found".

If someone has an idea what is happening or had some similar problem i would like to hear your thoughts
I dont have experience with iis or windows server .

Have a good weekend

fsrm not reporting accurately

We have two Windows 2012 R2 servers that are DFS servers. We use DFS to replicate users documents folder so that it's highly available. We have deduplication enabled on the specific volume. I've installed FSRM and I've run some reporting specifically to find out how much space is used by people storing mp3's and other audio files. I don't think the report is returning accurate information. I've done a search on the drive redirecting output to a text file and there are thousands and thousands of mp3's. When I run the report in fsrm in doesn't return the same amount of data. I calculate there is probably 100GB's of music files on the share and the report only returns 12GB's.  Same with wma files.  I know a specific user has 6GB's of wma files and when I run the report it doesn't return that user as having any of those files. What could be the issue of fsrm not returning accurate information?

Work Folders user configurations of Group Policy not applied

Hi,

I am having issue while syncing my windows 8.1 work folders to Windows server 2012 R2 work folder. The issue I am facing that when user logon to their computer and go in control panel, click work folder icon and configure the work folder and sync the folder with server get an error that is similar "Make sure your account is an administrator on this PC and that all administrator accounts on this PC have a password",  and user has not assigned admin permission on the computer. The work around I used to create work folder, login on the computer with domain admin account and configure work folder then sign out and again sign in with user account and configure the work folder.

I want that user can configure work folder without any admin permissions on local computer. Please guide.

Thanks

Old corrupt DFS Root failed during initialization,

This is a single windows Server 2012 R2 DC, where I have removed old failed DFS roots via ADSI Edit.  I was able to create 3 new DFS Roots under new names & they are fully accessible to clients.   I ran "dcdiag" on the server and the following messages are displayed for each of the deleted roots.  The old DFS share was "Main"

partitions greater than 2 TB

I've read that Windows Server 2008 supports partiton sizes greater than 2 TB for fail over clustering. Well, I'm not doing fail over clustering, but... I have a new Dell server with (6) 700 GB SATA drives.

Initially, I didn't understand how the 2 TB limit worked. I configured a hardware RAID container with all 6 drives and installed Windows Server 2003 on a 30 GB partition., When I attempted to a partition the remaining 3 + TB of space, the partion could not be configured larger than 2 TB , which left roughly 1.5 TB inaccessible. My research revealed that this was because the RAID array contained the boot partiton.Because of the 2 TB system partition limit I had to create 2 RAID (hardware) containers for RAID 5 for Windows Server 2003.

I'd like to do a single hardware RAID 5 container, 30 GB system boot partition, and a 3.5+ TB second partition with the remaining space. Does Windows Server 2008 support this configuration? I've read about support for a 'GUID partition table'. Does this have to be supported by the system BIOS?

Thanx in advance.

DFS Namespace Availability

Hi,

I hope you don't mind but I have a couple of questions regarding DFS. I am in the process of configuring DFS where I work to replace the generic file server set up we have. We have two sites that are on the same domain, eventually we'll have a DFS server in each location. I'm almost there, at the moment I have two servers configured with DFSN/R, I have replication between the two servers. Both servers are configured in the namespace, referral statuses are enabled, I have edited the referral ordering so they are first and last among all targets, both are members of the replication group.

The issue I'm having at the moment is when I take down the first target the namespace is no longer available, in order to work on any files or folders I have to navigate to \\server-name\company-docs

Firstly, does anyone know how I can provide a highly available namespace so that if the link between the two sites fails, users at each site will still be able to reach files and folders via \\domain-name\company-docs instead of having to revert back to \\server-name\company-docs?

Secondly, can I configure DFS so that users at each site connect to the DFS server on that site?, as I think because they are both in the same domain they will both have the same cost.

Thanks in advance.

Physical path of a dfs location

Geeks,

Is there a way to find by command line the physical location of a dfs path, without checking the properties, DFS tab of the folder-

\\domainname\root\users\<username> is sitting on \\filer1\share_users\<username>

Do suggest.

Cheers, Alan.

Store Shadow Copies on Different Volume

$

Hi,

I want to store shadow copies of volume "U:" on volume "S:", but shadow copies settings menu only lists the volume selected (in this case "U:") as a Storage area location.

I've tried enabling and disabling the shadow copies to clear past restore points if there were any, I also formatted volume "S:".

Both Volumes are part of the same disk, and the disk is assigned to a File server failover cluster.

Servers running as virtual machines Windows 2012 R2 (VMware 5.5), and the Disk is added as an RDM disk.

I'd like to avoid combining the volumes as a last resort, any other suggestions?

Thanks.

Event ID 5014 DFSR

Hi guys,

I have this event id in the logs on the DC and as I know most likely it is due to the network connectivity problems or backup from Veeam or Symantec Backup Exec. I decided to check most the events and I found out that there are some different one from:

The DFS Replication service is stopping communication with partner DOM-002 for replication group Domain System Volume due to an error. The service will retry the connection periodically.

Additional Information:
Error: 9036 (Paused for backup or restore)

Replication Group ID: 62A298CE-FF75-4B57-8358-354D5C3184AD

Here they are:

Both of the server are Virtual Machines.

The question is: Should I do something on the server? Upgrading, adding hardware, change something? Thanks in advance

Storage Pool Creation in server 2012 standard

$

I installed windows server 2012 standard on a 1T.B hard drive with 3 partitions, ie drive c (system drive) 348 GB, drive D 465 GB and drive E 97.3 GB. Without installing a separate an unallocated drive, I tried to create a storage pool but so rightly failed. I logged on to a forum where I was informed that in order to view the physical drives and primordial disks in the storage pool wizard, I hard to create an unallocated partion on the drive. I then created a seperate an unallocated drive by of 19.3 GB buy partitioning drive D 465 GB. However, after all this, their is still no physical drive or primordial drive displayed. When I use the power shell cmdlet Get-PhysicalDisk, Canpool is false. Do I have to buy a seperate hard drive or can this be fixed?

Thank you

DFS FileServers

Guys, good morning

I have 2 File Server and DFS namespace, with replication smoothly.

However some folders are with the wrong timing, and very strange, for example:

Fileserver01 - Notifications folder contains 1362 files
Fileserver02 - Notifications folder contains 1362 files

The problem is when commands list the amount of files directly from the folder (right button on the folder - properties), the amount of non knocks files, now if I open each folder and select all the files the amount hits.

Examples:
Folder notifications fileserver01 - I right button and go to properties - shows 1362 files
Folder notifications fileserver02 - I right button and go to properties - shows 1405 files

What is this problem? and how to solve?

Thank you

C drive partitions and shrinking

$

Hi

Im trying to partition my C drive to duel boot with linux. Windows 8.1 Computer management tells me that i have free space 65% 434gb,   681947mb size before shrink. But when i try to shrink volume in disk management ( right click )  only 4539mb space to shrink therefore not enough room to create partition 10gb recommended?   I have also accidently created recovery partitions on C totaling 36gb, these partions are empty, when i right click on them to remove them it only shows the help menu. How do i remove them ?

Many thanks Tim

Desktop folders disappear

We have some staff members at our school that when they login in the morning, there desktops are emptied out. We go in and restore from previous versions and all is well until a few days later, they disappear again during login. How do I track this down. Not happening to everyone just a select few.

So far it has just affected the "desktop" folders and not "documents" folder. We are running server 2008 on file server, Windows 7 on desktop and Active Directory is a 2012R2 server.

I use folder redirection in a GPO and it has worked flawlessly until about 3 weeks ago and this started up.

WMI SecurityCenter Namespace

This is a 2012 R2 Server being used as a terminal server

I'm having an issue where there is no "SecurityCenter" namespace in my WMI.

When I try to access it from wbemtest I get the 0x8004100e error for Invalid namespace

When I look under wmimgmt->Properties -> Security and expand Root there is no SecurityCenter
SFC didn't turn up anything

/salvage repository and /verifyrepository are both saying the repository is consistent.

any ideas why it is not there or how I can get this added?

Optimize-Volume -retrim is not giving me my space back!

Hello, I have a Server 2012 R2 failover cluster with two hosts. I have a dynamically expanding VHDX attached to my file server. The current filesize is 3,017,413,632KB (2.8TB). I have moved lots of things off this volume so the actual space used on the volume inside the VM says 2.22TB. I have ran the following command:

Optimize-Volume -DriveLetter D -ReTrim -Verbose

It then seems like it goes through the process with no errors. Usually when I do this on other virtual machines, once I shut down the VM and power it back on - the size of the VHDX on the host usually shrinks down to the expected size. But, I've tried this 3 or 4 times and the size doesn't seem to be going down?

Here's my output from the command:

Recreated DFS-R group, Namespace entry is messed up

$

OK, so, I was having an issue with around 10 DFS-R groups, where they've been in existence for a while, but for some reason they're now saying they're waiting for Initial replication. After just deleting the rep group and re-creating it didn't fix the issue, I deleted the rep group, deleted the dfsrprivate folder from both rep partners, and then re-created the DFS-R group. As far as that goes, DFS-R is working great.

However, now I have another issue...I left the Namespace entry in place, since it's accessed by the users. But when I created the new DFS-R group, naming it exactly the same, the replicated folder entry under the Replicated Folders tab in the rep group shows it as not being published. However, if I go into Namespaces, I can see it there, and I can browse to it just fine.

So, without deleting the Namespace entry, is there a way to attach the new DFS-R group to the pre-existing Namespace entry? If it needs to be deleted, it'll be a huge hassle, since I'll have to put in a change order, and I'll need to get it scheduled, and a communication will need to go out, etc etc. I could swear I've been able to re-create rep groups before without going through this hassle, so I'm not sure what happened.
