Big Performance isssue CAFS and 10 GBE network

$

So I am confused as we have some great results with the servers, storage and networks but when file transactions go through the CAFS share path then huge performance hits.

Setup is:

2 X HP DL380 G9

2 X LSI 12 GB SAS HBA in each server

2 x 10 GBE Intel 540-TX2 in each server

1 x DataON DNS-2608 JBOD

12 x HGE 8TB SAS drives

4 x HGE 240GB SAS SSD

* Server 2012 R2

Business Case:

We have the servers hardware / software fully patched and up to date.  We then created a File Server Cluster and all hardware passed checks with warnings on the network as we have not separated the Cluster and Data network.

MPIO is setup for the multiple SAS paths between the servers and JBOD and the dual 10 GBE nics are setup a LACP trunks.

Storage Spaces has been setup and we have created a Tiered space through the GUI with 44TB configured as 2-way Mirror using ReFS.

Then the File Server Role was setup from the Cluster Manager and a CAFS General Purpose role configured with CA shares setup.

The 10 GBE network cards are tuned and when we perform a standard UNC based file transfer between the servers we get 1-1.2GBps rates ie\\server1\c$\test to \\Server2\c$\test however when we perform the same data transfer using the CA, ie:\\cafs\test ,  transfer rates drop substantially to 150-300MBps

I have tried various configurations and every time we use the CAFS share path transfer rates drop to almost 1Gb network transfer rates,

We have for evaluation purposes even created brand new DC and FS servers so everything is fresh and a clean configuration.

Any suggestions are great.. I am even happy to hire someone that has a lot of experience with Storage Spaces and CAFS Volumes.

Thanks

icacls not reading full folder names when applying permissions to multiple directories

$

Hi, I'm looking for an easy way to apply permissions for a certain group to a long list of directories. I've come up with the following way of doing it:

First, I run a batch to generate a text file with all of the directory names at a certain location. Looks like this:

@echo off
for /d %%i in (*) do @echo %%i >>dir.txt
pause

I get a text file that looks like this (as an example):

LABOR

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

TIMECARDS

MATERIAL MANAGEMENT

Ok, so I try to apply full control permissions to each directory for the local administrators group and make it inheritable. I run this command:

for /f %i in (dir.txt) do icacls %i /grant .\administrators:(CI)(OI):F

Works like a charm... EXCEPT.

When I do this, it cuts off any folder name longer than one word. So it tries to find a folder named PROJECT for example, and apply permissions to that. Obviously that doesn't work. Isolating it with quotes in the text file doesn't help, neither do other usual tricks like commas, semicolons, %20...

This works great except for this one glitch, which mean it really doesn't work at all because most of our folders have multiple words in the titles.

Any ideas?

Work Folders - The Server is too busy to handle sync requests

All, We have Work Folders configured on a file server, hosting shares for about 60 users. I have a user experiencing an issue with Work Folders not syncing for over two months with the error:

"The Server is too busy to handle sync requests (0x80c8003e)"

Other users are not affected, and the server is by no means under resource or network strain. I cannot find any information related to this error, as Work Folders is not very common by any means. Any help or ideas are appreciated. Thank you.

Trying to run a program and it immediately crashed with KERNELBASE.DLL is the faulting module.  Server is 2012 r2 fully updated.  .net4.6 installed.  We have tried registering the dll and it will not register.  We have run the System File Checker and says no errors.  There is currently NO virus software on the server.  This is a brand new OS install.

I have run this exe on multiple 2012r2 servers and this is the only one that has issues.

On this server the KERNELBASE.DLL version is 6.3.9600.18340

Faulting module path c:\windows\system32\KERNELBASE.DLL

I'm setting up bitlocker network unlock and on the wds server when a client sends a request I get two errors.

[WDSServer/WDSPXE/NKPPROV]NKP request processing failed while extracting key material. Remote address: ipaddress:68, Packet length: 573.

[WDSServer/WDSPXE/NKPPROV]Could not decrypt data with private key. HRESULT = 0x80090010.

Any ideas.  I verified on the client that the certificate is installed and the thumbprint matches what is installed on the wds server.

Can this be done?

Windows NTFS folders

File folder1 (top level)-includes folder2(second level)
currently, everyone has modify rights to every folder.

We need to lock down the top level to only allow everyone to read only
only domain admins are able to modify on the top level folders

But, on the second level, users need to be able to modify rights.

I am testing on this now.  I took inheritance on second level folders and files.
copy the permissions.  on the folder1 (top folder), I unchecked inheritance and change everyone to
read only.  But, no user can create folder and files on second level folder2.

Can this be done?

Thank you for your help!

Windows server 2012 UAC Folder problem

$

Hi.

There was anoying feature (some call it bug) when Windows 2008 R2 UAC blocks folder acces if You are member of local Administrators group and NTFS ACL is allowing only Adminitrators and other users /groups, but not You. There was possible to avoid this via turning off UAC and rebooting computer.

Now, with Windows server 2012 (RTM, VL) problem is worse. You can turn off UAC (and reboot,i hope it does full reboot) but nothing changes. Still You are prompted

"You don't currently have permissions to access this folder. Click Continue to permanently get access to this folder.   Continue(with Shield mark) Cancel"

And if i click continue, my account is added to folder ACL.  Havent found any way to bypass it.

This is idiotic. If we have multiple admisnitrators every admin SID is added (at some point). And people are coming and leaving - and ACE's remain. And btw - how it is related with "Use groups for granting permissions" best practice ? Only way is to create "File Administrators group" , make administrators member of this group and add this group to ACL. Lot, of lots of pointless work.

Dear MS - how should we resolve it? Any secret policy/registry key, hotfix coming ?

Extend a Simple Volume on basic disks.

So here's a quick question folks.

I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine running as a VM in VMware vSphere.

it has e: drive 200GB and I want to extend it to 300 GB. Since datastore is full so what I am planning to do is add a new 100GB disk from another datastore and extend (Span) E: drive from DISK2 to DISK3.

Confusion I have that the E: volume is SIMPLE volume on BASIC disk DISK2. I am gonna add new BASIC disk DISK3. Will DISKPART extend command will extend it without losing data ? Please help, this is urgent.

My understanding is that EXTEND command will convert SIMPLE volume to SPANNED but I am not sure this is possible on basic disks, please suggest.

Thanks

DedupJob Garbage Collection mode

$

Hi,

Is there any way to check mode of DedupJob?
(Windows Server 2012 R2)

It says that after disabling FG with regedit, dedup-job will never do full garbage collection.
If you don't disable it, dedup-job will work in FG mode once every 4 times.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3066175

How do I know if FG(with dedup) is disabled?
Did dedupjob run with what mode of garbage collection?
I checked EventLog and History of TaskScheduller and found nothing.

I'm afraid that VSS would be deleted because of FG.

And  one more question.
Setting of registry below can be refrected without rebooting the OS?
reg add HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\ddpsvc\Settings /v DeepGCInterval /t REG_DWORD /d 0xffffffff

Thank you in advance,

Duplicate a lun and present to new server=loss of NTFS permissions?

$

I have a disk that I am presenting to a 2008R2 cluster. I duplicate that disk on the SAN, so I am basically presenting that exact same disk to 2012R2 server.  I am then losing access to all the folders on that disk, even though tt shows I do have the correct permissions are the root of the disk.  Is there some kind of disk signature problem when you move a disk from a 2008R2 server to a 2012R2 server?  If I seize ownership, it then shows the correct permissions from the old 2008R2 server and then I have access without having to make any changes in the ACL.  Retaking ownership  would not work as it would take days because these are very large luns.  Any ideas?

Please do not guess on this, if you do not know.  I am not looking for threads about move vs. copy NTFS permissions.  Usually, even if you are using the default 500 account for ownership or for administration, I thought that would come across to the new server which would also use its default 500 account.

Thanks,

Dave

Dedup deleted VSS

Enabled deduplication for a volume which had 64 Volume Shadow Copies in a different volume.
Shadow Copies were deleted after the first dedup job executed.
Here is what happened.

Aug 25 0:00:00
Dedup Throughput Optimization had started for 2 hours.

Aug 25 1:24:13
 EventID 24 (volsnap)
 https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd364650(v=ws.10).aspx

Aug 25 1:25:05
 EventID 35
 https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc734558(v=ws.10).aspx

System Configuration is below.
- Windows Server 2012 R2
- disabled Full GC with registry
- Dedup Volume : 588GB
- VSS Volume   : 50GB

            DiskSize  Available   Optimized
Aug 24 588GB     78.9GB       0%       # Before Dedup
Aug 25 588GB     236GB       31%       # After the 1st Dedup
Aug 26 588GB     338GB       51%       # After the 2nd Dedup

Volume Shadow Copies were not deleted during the 2nd Dedup.
I assume that during the first dedup there were not enough space in the VSS volume.
Since all Shadow copies were deleted during 1st Dedup and there was enough space in VSS volume, the 2nd dedup didn't delete any of them.
Is it unavoidable that Dedup deletes VSS?

It would be appreciated if you could explain it.

Thank you in advance,
Kazuo Ieiri

File in use when disconnected from wireless/wired network - Network Shared Drive

$

Hi,

We're having an issue where we are getting a "file in use" message when disconnected from the network. To replicate the issue, what we have been doing is:

1) Connect to the wired network with wireless disabled

2) Create a test document

3) Enter some text and save to network share

4) Remove network cable

5) Add additional text

6) Reconnect network cable

7) Try to save file back to network share

Initially clicking on the X brings up the message again do you want to save. Click Yes, and the message comes up again next time you hit the X. Hit No and it loses last change.

From here we then go back in to the network share, open the file and it comes up with "File in Use. Open in Read-Only". File is open by us (administrator account), and there is NO temp file in the shared folder.

Tried so far:

- Running net config server /autodisconnect:-1 to try and stop it disconnecting the share

- Checked details pane, preview pane and turned off "show popup description for folder and desktop items"

- Updated Windows

We're trying to replicate on Wired connection as it's more easily replicable than wireless disconnections. Seems to be affecting multiple OS's. Share folder is shared on a Windows 2008 R2 x64 machine.

Is this a known issue or is there something that we can configure to try and prevent it locking out the file after the disconnect? Ideally we want the drop to go unnoticed and provide no disruption to the user unless they try to save during the drop.

Thank you in advance for comments :)

iSCSI not reconnecting after reboot

I have two servers(Windows Server 2012 R2) in a fail over cluster that hosts file servers and VMs. They are connected to a Synology RS815RP for iSCSI storage. I have 6 Targets that I connect to in Microsoft iSCSI initiator. Whenever I reboot any of the servers not all of the targets reconnect. I went through all the targets and made sure to check:     ADD TO Favorites list

Contacted Synology support and there recommendation is to increase the timeout value because its a issue with windows.

Server 2012 Two-Way Mirror Storage Space Displays Incorrect Capacity

I have 3 drives in a thin provisioned 2 way mirror storage pool running in Windows Server 2012 Essentials.  The pool has 6.36Tb of capacity and is provisioned for up to 8Tb.  Manage Storage Spaces shows 4.26Tb of used space, yet the Dashboard shows 535Gb of Used Space.  I can confirm the Size on Disk is 535Gb by using Explorer to check properties of the drive.

Screen shots are attached, any ideas?  Should I try an optimize-volume with defrag or retrim or something?

Thanks, Jeff

Cluster Storage Solution

Hi there,

I need some advice on the best route to take with my project.  If you are either able to give me points here or link me to a comprehensive guide, maybe including a video that would be great.

I understand the file server clustering model in that you have various nodes and one file server storage using storage spaces.

The solution I am looking for is this:

2 storage servers (both with Win 2012 Server installed)  to be presented to the failover nodes as one volume.  Also that I am able to do maintenance on one storage server without losing connectivity etc.

I guess this is a storage failover model.  Currently I am running DFS on my file servers but DFS does not support Users Profiles or redirected folders.  Without the expense of a shelf type storage system like Netapp for example.  Can I acheive this with Server 2012?

Many thanks in advance

VPN and File Server in singe Windows 2012 R2

Hi,

I have a Windows Server 2012 running file server. I want to setup a VPN into the same server so that I could access the files remotely by connecting with the VPN. Is it possible? How? Please note that I have only one Network Card and it is assigned to the Public IP of my Server.

P.S: I have never tried but I know it could be possible if I had 1 VPN server with 2 NIC and another separate file server locally connected with VPN server.

Thanks,

Remote access denied for Local Admin

Unable to delete, or change permissions on, files with long file paths / names from (now completely lost) old domain

$

First, the basics:

OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 (fully updated)

Roles: none yet (removed the only role during troubleshooting - File Services)

Features: ditto

Environment: my own domain

Background:

I have a server, running Win2008R2, which plays host to three Hyper-V VMs, each also running '08 R2.  These four systems (on one box) basically run my domain.

Recently, due to a lack of planning / foresight on my part, I lost my entire domain architecture - the HDD hosting my physical OS (the one that acted as Hyper-V host) died.  This OS was also my DC / DHCP / DNS server.

I have now brought that system back online, and for all intents and purposes recreated my old domain.  However, as you might expect, I've run into a few snags.  The first that I've been just unable to solve is this:

One of the virtual servers has access to a RAID disk, which hosts a number of shares.  Before the domain crash, everything was working just fine.

In trying to get back to that state, I need to re-permission the entire file tree of the RAID disk, removing the GUIDs for the flattened domain and replacing them with valid domain accounts.

Here's the problem:

There are a few files on that disk which just refuse to cooperate.  I first noticed this in my first attempt to simply change owners globally on every file on the drive.  I had to click through probably fifty error windows telling me I couldn't do that on a specific file.  The filenames involved were too long to be fully displayed.

I, predictably, got the same error when I tried to change the actual file permissions, now that I was owner on (most of) the drive.  Around this time, I also started getting errors that the Recycle Bin on that drive was corrupt, and asking me if I wanted to repair it.  I am unable to do so.

So, here's a list of the things I can't do.  I think if I could do just one of them, I could solve all these problems:

I can't take ownership of a few files in my structure.  Gut instinct, it's because the path is too long.

Similarly, I can't change permissions on these files

I can't delete these same files (though I was able to copy them with xcopy)

I can't empty or repair the recycle bin (I am prompted by UAC, and then AFTER the UAC prompt, told I need permission).

I'm not totally sure I'm providing enough information here, but hopefully this is a good enough start, and folks can point me at things to try.  I've exhausted my limited expertise.  At the moment, I'm concerned that the problem may be occurring because my new domain is named the same as my old domain, but the GUID's within don't match.

Thanks in advance for any and all advice.
