We are using to access shared folders the  map drive option. But, it was infected by ransomware. We want to use network location like an option. Has been it infected by ransomware ?

Does we have other options? We cannot pay for NAS.

Thanks in advance.

Server 2012 Filename Too Long

$

Hi

Recently I replaced a branch office server migrating the services from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2. One of the services is the File Server role. The server is a Hyper-V guest with a file storage area on its own .vhdx. When I migrated the files from the old 2008 R2 server, rather than reconnect the old .vhd, I decided to create the new one as a .vhdx and use DFSR to replicate the folders and files.

All the migration occured without a hitch and the other server has been decommisioned. However, it's come to light that files on long file paths, that could be opened on the 2008 R2 server can no longer be worked with on the 2012 R2 server.

No matter whether we try to open, copy, move or even delete the file, we get a "Filename too long" error.

Now, the file paths are too long admittedly. For example, the file the office is particularly interested in accessing is 283 characters in length including the filepath. I've advised they rename folders further up the tree to bring it under 255 characters but I'm interested in finding out why they were accessible on the 2008 R2 server and not the 2012 R2 server.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Limit SMB for domain logged user only

Hi.

We want to deploy an SMB sharing on one server which allow only domain logged user to access.

If a user without domain logging want to access, server should deny it without asking for a domain user and password. Any user, has a domain user and password or not, did not login to desktop through it, cannot access to this sharing.

It that possible?

Thanks.

Shared Folders Session Super Slow, even Freezing, Server 2012R2

Hello, I am using a "Windows Server 2012R2" and I am using it as a scale out file server. When I navigate into the "Computer management / System Tools / Shared Folders / Sessions" the listings are populating super slow, freezing, and I pretty much can't have any interaction with the console at all because of the crawling speed. What can be the issue to that? I have over 100 sessions run on this Hyper-V enabled SOFS server, but i would assume that this should not be a problem for Windows Server 2012R2 Datacenter edition.

modify rights user folders

built a new server for our network and moved our user folders over. everyone can access their folders however nobody can modify.  Each folder has modify/read & execute/list folder contents/read/write permissions checked, but if opening a document to modify changes it will not save, a read only error box is displayed. Is this an inherited problem from the top level folder?

Workfolders fails to sync from outside

$

We recently setup Workfolders and it works fine internally but we get the error "The server's SSL certificate contains incorrect hostnames." error 0x80c80338 when trying to sync from outside the LAN.  I saw other posts where this error occurred because the SAN hostnames in the Cert were not correct, but we are using a wild card certificate so the certificate doesn't have any hostnames in it.  I don't understand.

The sync share "Workfolders" is hosted on server that we'll refer to as server.internaldomain.com. The hostname Workfolders.externaldomain.com is registered in both internal DNS and external DNS.  I confirmed that both the DiscoveryURL and the ServerURL in the ...\WorkFolders\Partnership\Microsoft.SyncShare.UserData section of the registry are set to https://workfolders.externaldomain.com/sync/1.0.  A wild card certificate *.externaldomain.com is bound to the server and confirmed with a query "netsh http show sslcert".

Internally, discovery and sync works fine without any errors.  However, sync fails on the outside with the error  "The server's SSL certificate contains incorrect hostnames." error # 0x80c80338.  The registry entries confirm that the client is syncing to Workfolders.externaldomain.com and the wildcard cert is there for the externaldomain.com.  Why would I get that error?  There is no hostname in the certificate and the domain names match. The certificate is a valid GoDaddy cert and it has not expired.

Does anyone have a clue as to what is going on here?

Sharing an external drive on Windows Server 2008

I can't seem to find a good solution to this issue (maybe there isn't one). I'm simply trying to share an external drive directly from a Windows server across the network.

I'm running Windows Server 2008, and have a RDX USB external drive which I would like to share. The share sets up fine, all workstations can see it.  However, after what seems like a random amount of time, and maybe 2 or 3 cartridge swaps, the workstations can no longer access the drive, even though no permissions changed and the share still exists.  If I actually make another share, it will work (for a while), but the original share will still not work.

Neither the workstations nor the server itself can access the drive via the "Network" icon, but the server can still access the drive through the "Computer" icon of course.  The error I'm getting is that Windows cannot access the shared folder, with the error code 0x80004005

Is this something that simply can't be done on a Windows server?

Thank you.

INTERMITTENTLY Error 22 for write/read access to a file on Active Directory Shared Folder

Hi experts,

We run our SAP on SQL Server with Windows Server Failover Cluster and I migrated one DC(qrdcsapdc2) to another DC(qrcsapdc7) a couple weeks ago. I found there are many error 22 for write/read access to a file on AD Shared Folder from 9/8 2:00am ~ 4:00am

The first weird part is the timeframe is very regular. Its occurred only from 2:00am ~ 4:00am(9/6 2:30am happened, too)

  1. The second weird part is we have 7 Additional Application Servers(tccap51 ~ tccap57) and it occurred only on 3 AASs(tccap53, tccap54, tccap55)
  2. By the way, I have disable 8dot3name(fsutil 8dot3name set S: 1) according to SAP note 662452 on 9/6 but I have not restarted OS yet.

File = \\tccprd1\sapmnt\TCP\SYS\global\218JOBLG\0001X01450800X50446

Cannot close the file of a TemSe object (error no 22)

Possible causes & solutions?

  1. Something wrong on Active Directory(DC) authentication issues and I prepare to restart all DCs, DBs and AASs to get new authentication tickets.
  2. Intermittent network packet loss?
    • Replace with new network cables and switch ports
  3. Others….

Please help. Any comments are appreciated.

Open files reverting to read only

Got a problem I am struggling to resolve.

When opening a file from our file server it opens correctly with read/write access. This is confirmed when checking in the "open files" mmc.

After leaving the file open for roughly half a day, it will complain that the file is open as read only when trying to save. The only way to save is to save it under a different name.

Checking under open files it confirms that the same user still has read/write access to the file. If I close the open file through the open files mmc it will then let the user save the file again.

File server is Windows 2012 R2. We are using DFS to access the shares. Only one DFS target is being used, not using DFSR for any of the shares.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give

Tool to backup and restore share and NTFS permissions

$

I am in the process of migrating data from a file server in a domain to another file server in a different domain. I will be using Robocopy to migrate the data and then exporting the shares manually from the file server registry.

I am researching a tool that can backup both the share and NTFS permissions on the root folder (and subdirectories) in the source domain and restore them in the target domain.  I have not looked into SUBINACL yet as I know it is not supported on server versions after windows 2003. I would prefer Powershell but have run into issues with long filenames during the testing phase. My powershell script looks like this:

Get-Childitem -path G:\Dept -recurse | Where-Object {$_.PSIsContainer} | Get-ACL| Select-Object Path -ExpandProperty Access | Export-CSV c:\scripts\tony\acl-dept-ntfs.csv
Both servers are running Windows 2008 R2

VSS error 8193

I am getting three VSS errors when WS2008 backup executes.  I have no idea where to begin to look for the problem.
The error (Event 8193) is:

The other two are duplications of this error.
Can anyone help me find a solution to this error?

pagefile.sys size increased

Hi.!

I am using Windows Server 2008 R2 in one of my server and also i'm using Hyper-V on that same server. This server is configured with Intel Xeon E5645 @2.40GHz (2 Processors), 32 GB RAM. but still my pagefile.sys has taken the size on the disk 31.9 GB, and due to that my C:\ is almost full. Kindly help me out of that.

DFS Topology OK but replication not happening

$

Hi,

We have DFS sharing a folder across 5 machines, all on Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter. We recently introduced two new VMs into the mix, and added folders on an E:\Media drive with the folder into DFS. Then we had to resize the disk sizes on the VMs, and Windows automagically renamed those drives D:\Media. Once we got customer complaints about files being missing, we went into DFS Management, but the Member drives were correctly listed as D:\Media drives. However files are not replicating across servers.

Verify Topology says that "the topology for the replication group GROUP is fully connected. Data can replicate throughout the topology".

Create Diagnostic Report shows error ID 6404, solution here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/support/ee/transform.aspx?ProdName=Windows+Operating+System&ProdVer=5.2.3790.1830&EvtID=6404&EvtSrc=DFSR&LCID=1033

Solution says "Fix this problem by configuring the replicated folder with a valid local path using the DFS Management snap-in or the Dfsradmin.exe command-line tool."

However the snap-in shows the correct D:\Media folder, and indeed offers no way to change this under the server Properties dialog windows, under the Replicated Folder tab, as everything is greyed out.

Can someone offer some advice on how to fix this as we now have many folders out of synch each with updated data?

DFS management with DFSR quota enabled does not work

$

We have 2 file servers with FSRM quota's enabled.  I now need to use DFS replication but the quota will not let this happen.  Server 1 has a folder "d:\folder1" with a 200mb quota on all folders created below this (redirected desktop) and server 2 is set up with a "d:\folder2" with a 200mb quota on folders created below.

I then enable DFS replication and the replication starts but when it reaches 200mb it fails.  I believe this is because the folder "D:\folder1\DfsrPrivate\ConflictAndDeleted" has now got a 200mb quota as it sits below "d:\folder1" and likewise on server 2.

I have read that you cannot move the "DfsrPrivate\ConflictAndDeleted" folder and I have tried to use powershell to remove the quota but powershell does not "see" the DfsrPrivate folder.

Any ideas how this can be resolved?

Folder auditing alternative?

Hi guys,

I have a folder on a server that keeps being overloaded with text files. I am not sure what creates these, and I'd like to avoid enabling auditing.

I've looked at who the owner is and it's the local admin account.

Is there any other way to check where these files come from/what application is writing the files on the folder?

Thanks.

Auditing File Access Permissions

Hello:

Our company recently purchased an Epson BrightLink Pro interactive whiteboard. The system has the ability to save files created in whiteboarding sessions onto a network share.

I've added the UNC path to the settings page for this device, along with an AD account and password. I still cannot connect to our file server. I know that the user account, called "scanneraccount" isn't locked out. I've verified that the password is correct. I can login to a workstation using these credentials and it logs in OK. I've tried using a machine name and IP in the path and neither works.

I know this isn't an Epson forum, however I was wondering if someone could give me information on what to look for in the event viewer on our file server to see if the device is even reaching our file server. I'd like to find clues to see if an incorrect username, password or UNC path error is shown.

I know all events aren't audited by default, so if I need to have my sysadmin turn any of that on, I'd need to know what specifically.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Dynamic Cache Service isn't doing anything on Server 2008 R2 file server

So, we've been experiencing the issues which are described in the use case for the Dynamic Cache Service (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=9258, https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/976618).

I installed the service, imported the .reg file, set the MaxSystemCacheMBytes reg key to 2560, and started the service. However, Free RAM is still at 252 MB's, and the Metafile is currently using a bit over 4 GB's. I left the SampleIntervalSecs at 60 (seconds), so it should run every 60s and free up RAM if the metafile usage is over 2560 MB's. But, that's obviously not happening, or I'm misunderstanding something.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on, and if I misconfigured something?

Edit: I also tried setting MaxSystemCacheMBytes to 40, which should change it from being a defined max size in MB's, to a percentage of RAM (according to the documentation). However, the Free RAM isn't changing, and the Metafile is still using a bit over 4 GB's.

DFS Moved Files

I have two file server both 2012r2.  I installed the DFS Namespaces and DFS replication roles on both servers.  I then created a simple namespace called ITDFS and added a folder to the namespace called IT Test1.  I added the second server from the DFS managment console and added a folder by the same name to it.  I then added a replication group via the wizard.  I was able to add text and excel file and have them replicate between the two servers.

About an hour later I received a call that folders (on the server that I initially configured DFS on) were missing.  After using a utility called tree size I was able to see that several hundred gigs of software was moved into the DFSR/Private/PreExisting folder.

1.  At no point did I ever configure this set of folders to be included in DFS replication.  It was several folders deep so there is no chance I accidentally navigated to it during my DFS testing.  Also, I would have never selected some 200 folders at a size of 347 GB for a simple DFS test.  I have no idea why these files would have been moved to the preexisting folder, which I understand is readying the files for replication.

2.  I cannot get into the DFSR private folder for the life of me.  I have forced the permissions on it numerous times to no avail.

Any idea why my files would have been moved and how do I get them back?

~Eric
