The create operation stopped after reaching a symbolic link

$

I recently deployed symlinks in a DFS file share deployment (symlink /D). I started receiving "The create operation stopped after reaching a symbolic link" on some client machines. I am not able to find any information on what this error actually means or what should be done to remedy it. Does anybody have any suggestions on possible solutions or additional troubleshooting steps I should take?

The create operation stopped after reaching a symbolic link

Environment:

  • Windows 7 x64 Clients
  • Windows Server 2008 x86 and Windows Server 2008 R2 file share using DFS folder Targets (2) and DFSr replication (2) (although the error started before I created additional folder targets, but after I enabled folder replication.)
  • I've only been able to reproduce the error with a few clients connecting to the Windows Server 2008 x86 Server.
  • The connection is over a WAN link

For a few days, I have repeated this event every 20 seconds. I've been looking for a solution but I can not find anything.

This event is in the section. "SMBWitnessClient\Admin"
It is a windows 2016 Datacenter with the roles hyper-v and failover cluster, the storage is a cabinet netapp. The shared folder is set to "continuous availability".

The operation of hyper-v and cluster seems not to be affected, but this event worries me.

File share attributes +rhs??

OK, so I'm moving a file share from one server to another to update to new hardware (actually P2V migration, but pretty much same thing) and came across a weird situation. The folder for the file share was set with the attributes Read Only, Hidden, and System on. This caused all sorts of issues with the robocopy, as you can probably imagine, as a large portion of the subfolders and files also had these attributes. Ever weirder was the that files that wouldn't copy with robocopy were able to seemingly copy using Windows Explorer, but then dropped out of existence shortly afterward. (The drive showed 100GB of free space at 11:00, and then 126GB of free space at midnight.) During my troubleshooting, I turned the attributes off and reran the robocopy, and everything copied over, but too late for my maintenance window.  I think it was actually Windows System File Protection that dropped the files, but I can't be sure. I ended up having to re-enable the old files share and let the users use it for the next week, until I can try again next week.

My question is: Has anyone here ever heard of a file share intentionally being set to these attributes, and why? I'm at a complete loss on it.

Open Files will not release after session

We are running Michelle UltraMate software on Windows Server 2012 Essentials and after users complete their sessions in UltraMate, the open files do not close or release.  As a result, the software eventually locks up and requires someone to clear the open files to get the software working.  Does anyone know why open files might not release?

Best options for HA Fileserver?

ayup,

Currently we have a couple of DELL NX NAS boxes running w2k8r2 Storage server, they are both off maintenance in September this year so I'm looking at replacing them with something.  Each NAS box has 15Tb of storage and we're using around 10Tb, they are configured on the main to use DFS-R but some volumes use Rsync to sync between the two boxes.  One box is the main fileserver and the other is just a replica so users don't access it is there for DR purposes.  I'm looking at bringing in something a bit more resilient and was wondering the best way to achieve this?

I was thinking of getting a couple of servers with maybe 24Tb'ish of disk.  Now as I see it there are a couple of options.  Using server 2016 Data Centre

1. HA cluster using storage spaces direct with 2 nodes (we already have a Hypergrid 3 node cluster onsite hosting our VM's so I have cluster experience)

2. Failover using Storage Replica, so similar to what we have now but using Storage Replica rather than DFS.

Any comments?

Server is 2016, backup is done on local USB drive (tested and 100% functional) it doesnt have any roles other than Hyper-v and server backup, it doesnt have antivirus or ANY other software installed.

Im seeing this issue happening on other 2016 servers also.

What can i do about it?Is this feature actually working good or im gona need to find alternative?

Enabling S2D and Failover Clustering for SoFS

We are interested in using the S2D for creating a Failover Cluster and deploying the scale out file server.  In our testing, we have 4 plain jane computers running server 2016.  Each machine has 2 HDD @ 500GB each.  I understand that only one disk from each machine will be able to be used for the storage space. We are running into 2 issues. First, the disks are appearing with an "unknown" "media type" attribute. Second, when I run the cluster validation tests I get failed on the unknown attribute type but also a "Cannot Pool Reason" of "Insufficient Capacity". The disks are blank they are online but have no volumes/partitions created.  The drives appear under file and storage services in server manager as a primordial pool and if I add them to storage pools I can fix the "media type" issue, however, when I delete the pool the "media type" attribute is lost. Any help would be appreciated. TIA.

Intermittent corrupt files - disabling offline files stops this.

I am noticing intermittently corrupting files (at least one daily per user) on a file share on a Windows Server 2012 r2. The files in question that are only those located in a share designated for 'My Documents' redirection. On the multiple computers that I've observed this on (Windows 10 Professional), disabling offline files appears to be the only way to stop files from becoming corrupt. This is a brand new server install and a brand new share. Other shares that are accessed do not have this problem but also aren't available offline.

Windows 2012 R2 File sharing and permissions

Hi Everybody,

I have windows 2012 R2 server. I need to setup file sharing permission to users. My requirements is mentioned below

we have main folder called "Share". Inside that folder accounts, marketing, sales, stocks, common share, procurement. And we have groups like accounts, marketing, sales, stocks, procurement. when I map the main folder "Share" to users it should contain the common-share for all groups and the other sub folders like accounts, marketing, sales, stocks procurement will available only for selected groups.

How I can give permissions to subfolders..?

Volume Replication from Physical to Virtual

Hi,

I am planning to replace DFS replication to Volume Replication..

Exiting Configuration;

Head Office

File server failover cluster (windows 2012R2)

DR site:

Virtual File Server

Data replicated from HO file server to DR virtual server using DFSR.

Can we do the same using Volume Replication? or there is any better design suggestion?

Storage Spaces out of box parity volume causes timeout when copying

$

Dear all,

I just created a parity over 6x4 TB in a pool which doesn't contain SSD. Blank Parity volume fixed on a LSI controller Xeon D board + Server 2016.

Once I copy large movies I easily reach 112 MB/s from Client to Server for 1 Minute. I can see the memory load in the server (64GB) slightly increasing, ~100 MB/s so it seems like Microsoft caches the received data to memory. That is done for about 5 GB -> then the transfer stucks at 0MB/s and the cache is getting written to disk.

Any how, that takes too long so the client gets this:

If i click retry after a minute it starts copying at full speed again and a minute later the same issue again.

What the heck is wrong with MS Storage Spaces implementation. I dunno. Even if I try it with journaling SSDs it might work so far so good and the speed seems to be okay enough for the client not to run in timeout but its far from good.

I can create the pool randomly over 3 to 6 disk in my system and it behaves the same. Timeout on client side.

Ideas? Thanks a lot!

2 disks retired in parity pool, WTF!

Hi guys, hopefully your are able to help me out.

I have a storage pool with 2 SSD and 6x 4TB drives all from same type. All 6 HDD were configured as a parity virtual drive.

I can't exactly say what happend, this morning I realized my Parity Virtual drive has gone -> 2 drives missing and retired. I think they ran hot and hung. Restarted my server, both drive spin up correctly and fine, happend in past as well with drive I think but not since I improved the cooling.

All smart values and stuff looks fine, drives get online normally. But as there are 2 failed I dont know how to get my pool back to work ...

Ideas?

I already tried connecting the drive to one of my integrated ports. Both drive are seens as part of the pool and the error message persists.

I uploaded my Eventlog which shows the drives beeing lost by system:

https://1drv.ms/u/s!Ar_eIBtD4lGqhL4SevYTbyO6C-us6Q

Edit: I just installed ReclaiMe recovery tools for Storage spaces. All drives are physically correctly detected but i dont want to spent 300 bucks for a weird Storage Space Fault. Any how, it must be possible to repair it via integrated features.

could not find item while deleting folder

$

Hi there,

We ran in to a bit of a strange situation. On a fileserver 2008R2 we have a shared folder in which our employees write data generated by other calculation servers. Sometimes this process of direct writing out the data from these calculating servers gives an error that holds a file while killing the process. When this happens we go to the "computer management\shared folders\open files" and kill the process holding the file. problem solved...

But now there is a folder we want to delete and this gives an error. the error is "could not find this item, it is no longer...."

When going to the location by the explorer the item is visible but when trying to go there by powershell its not there. When we create the item on the same location again using explorer there will be 2 items in the folder with the identical name but an old and a new last modify date. Going to the folder location again by powershell the item is in duplicate visible both with the same date. When trying to remove the old item in explorer the new item will be removed and when deleting it from powershell it will delete them both from powershell again but the old one is still in explorer.

Does anyone have any idea how to remove such a gostfile?

I hope somebody has an answer because i'm realy stuck on this

Greetings Wim

Continuous Access - Failover takes 25s - Not using Witness

I have set up a MSCS Cluster with the file server role on it on VMware vSphere 5.1. Using RDM from a NetApp.

File Server role is configured for CAFS and while doing some tests I noticed that the brownout in file transfer takes about 25s. That's almost 3 to 4 times as what one would expect with CAFS (5 to 7s)

I went troubleshooting with a Windows 10 client and found the following error in SMBWitnessClient:

Event ID 8

Error

Witness client failed to register with witness server FS2 for notification on netname \\CFS-FS1. A security package specific error occurred

Did some research about this issue but most of them talk about SOFS instead of CAFS. CAFS is not so wide spread for general file-server usage it seems. When I run get-smbwitnessclient nothing's being returned.

Anyone an idea where this might come from?

Is there a variable that i can use in the FSRM email alert to determine the process name and and username of the user that violated my rule?

Can not edit a file on server.

steps:

Prerequisite: user has read and write permissions to a file

1. open a text file on shared folder from remote computer (ie: fs.readFile() - this reads to the end and closes file)

2. edit file

3. try to save to the same file (ie: fs.writeFile() - Error: EPERM Operation Not Permitted

4. wait about 30 seconds, fs.WriteFile() works and file is overwritten with edited content

File and Storage Services Share Names Not Uppercase

$

I've created a SMB-Quick Share from my file sharing server which has the folder name in all uppercase letters, the share name is in all uppercase letters, and even the path name I gave in all uppercase letters but when I go to the network share the shared folders name is all lowercase.

How can I get the shared folders name to display uppercase?
