File Server - DFS Question

$
0
0

Hello,

I have 2 file server in my company:

MainFS001 - Main Office, which has FolderA and FolderB shared for users.

BranchFS001 - Branch Office, which has FolderC and FolderD shared for users.

DFS is configured on MainFS001 as \\domain.com\files$, and it has Folders A | B | C and D.

So, if I am at any of both sites, I can access \\domain.com\files$ normally, then access any of the four shared folders.

But what happen, for example, if I am at Main Office and the connectivity between the offices goes down? I suppose that I will be able to reach \\domain.com\files$ from Main Office but without access on folders C and D.

And from Branch Office, I suppose that I will be not able to access the DFS name, consequently not able to access any folder. Or I will be able to access the DFS but without any foldere access.

How this exactly works in case of vpn site-to-site goes down?

Thanks,

Volume Deduplication

I have a virtual file server in my environment that has a drive filling up.  My usual process is to run WinDirStat to see what can be cleaned up before provisioning more storage.

To my dismay - I found out that data dedupe is turned on for this volume!!  I can't actually see which users (this is a home directory share) are actually consuming the most data.  Is there anyway to tell when this was turned on and by who?  Is this ever auto enabled?

When I look in the server manager I see that there are "Deduplication Savings"; however, file explorer shows the disk at 80% capacity with "chunk store" taking up the majority of the actual space within a hidden System Volume Information folder.

I cloned the file server.  Next I disabled dedupe on the drive within server manager.  Next I ran the powershell comand:

Start-DedupJob -Volume"E:" -Type Unoptimization

This command causes the server to blue screen.

Any suggestions?

VSS errors on virtual server following BSODs, causing backup failures.

Environment:

2012 R2 hypervisor, three VMs (SBS 2011, 2012 R2, 2008 R2 respectively).
All VHDs and VMs stored on HV's D: drive.
Arcserve Backup 17.5 SP1

Background:

SBS 2011 server blue-screened, seems to be due to corruption in/with VHD for system drive. Boot order was lost, now fixed and server is running normally.

Issue:

SBS server seems to be experiencing issues with VSS writers & event 51s for errors during paging operations. Backups failing as a result. Arcserve leverages Windows VSS writers to take snapshots which are then backed up.

Steps taken so far:

Usual VSS troubleshooting - restart associated services, restart server, re-register DLLs.
CHKDSK /R & SFC /SCANNOW on affected server.
Shut down server, removed and re-attached VHDs.

ID Management for Unix for SMB and NFS cross protocol - Alternative Mapping Solution?

$

Per link, it says that IDMU is deprecated in Win Server 2016 and up. Is there a simple alternative solution to map Unix ID's with Windows ID's so that I can share my files across both SMB and NFS? Without a mapping store, file permissions would not correctly be honored between users unix users and windows users.

https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/activedirectoryua/2016/02/09/identity-management-for-unix-idmu-is-deprecated-in-windows-server/

According to the blog post (and several other sources), it mentions that the UID/GID entries will still exist moving froward. But there's no mention of how to setup up the mapping alternatives. It also alludes to possibly using the UID/GID attributes with NFS Server for ID mapping, but I'm trying to find steps on performing this.

"For example, you may require the RFC 2307 attributes in combination with Network File System (NFS) Server (which does not require NIS Server role to be installed on Windows Server) to map the identity."

Any help for steps on performing this would be greatly appreciated.

DFS namespace - Clients connect to random server

Hi,

I have created a namespace in my Domain \\domain\files, which points to a replicated share on 3 fileservers (in our 3 sites). Now, when a client executes net use x: \\domain\files, it connects to a "random" server it seems to me.

The 3 locations are recognized correctly in the DFS management for the 3 servers.

How can I diagnose further why that happens? What additional data do you need from me?

I want the behavior that all clients connect to their local file server (unless it's unavailable, then its ok to use another one).

Thanks!

Query on SMB1 Deprecation

Hi,

I have 2008R2,2016 DC in my infrastructure and my clients windows 2003 and 2003R2,2008R2, Windows7 and above.

soon 2008R2 DC will be decommissioned. Due to application dependence still we are retaining 2003 and 2003 R2 servers.

I have a query in disabling SMB1 for my above mentioned clients and servers. Does it recommended to disable SMB1.

If I disable the SMB1 will my users face any issue in accessing the share folders on legacy servers.

Please assist.

Search indexing incomplete results

I'm having some serious issues in trying to resolve a search indexing issue on a dedicated Windows server 2016 file server.

The server is a Hyper-V VM in our DC and it's sole purpose is to act as a file server to replace the customers old on premises 2008R2 server which will soon be completely phased out.

The problem we are facing is the search index does not appear to index all files properly. On the old server with the same (general data) directory selected for indexing, around 300.000 files are indexed. On the new server only about 100.000 files are indexed.

This also reflects itself in the search results. Even when just looking for an extension such as *.pdf, a vast difference in results is present when comparing the search results of both servers. When searching specifically in a directory for which the old server is showing results and the new one isn't, I can see it containing 4 pdf files and the search just comes up blanc.

I've already rebuildt the search index several times, used both sfc and dism repair options (no results). I've also resolved Search service error 3104 by assigning DCOM permissions to system and remove "ready for archiving" properties to see if this changes anything and still nothing seems to work.

This problem has persisted right from the start for a server which was installed from scratch and has no 3rd party software on it other then Adobe reader, which was installed to try and resolve PDF indexing issues.

I really hope someone has any idea how to resolve this, before I have to reinstall the server.

RoboCopy Error 5

I am getting this error both on a Network Drive AND seeing it on a USB connected drive.

On the Network Drive, the command I am using is....

ROBOCOPY C:\Users\GH\Documents\   "\\SDS115J\home\GH Folder"\GHDTandDocs\%RunDate%\GHDocsBkuP\   /MIR  /NDL  /NFL  /R:0  /TEE

.... and all works well apart from 3 Folders failing "Access is Denied" on the Time-Stamping process.

These folders are : My Music, My Pictures & My Videos  - yet these folders are "seemingly" NOT in my Documents folder.... clearly some sort of problem due to them being Windows Folders (they are under my User name, without the "My" Prefix).

Error Message Screenshot to follow (when Account verified by TechNet).

DFSR breaks after reboot

$

I have set up a replication group and folder between two 2012R2 servers.  Replication works fine until I reboot one of them.  Then I get Error 1202  in the Events log with this message:

The DFS Replication service failed to contact domain controller  to access configuration information. Replication is stopped. The service will try again during the next configuration polling cycle, which will occur in 60 minutes. This event can be caused by TCP/IP connectivity, firewall, Active Directory Domain Services, or DNS issues.

Additional Information:
Error: 160 (One or more arguments are not correct.)

I cannot tell which argument is not correct.

I am also puzzled why I was able to set up the replication initially, and it works fine, if the two systems can't talk to the domain controller.

I am not sure there is a shutdown timeout and that I am falling in to the 'Dirty shutdown' scenario because I can't find the events 1006 or 1008 indicating DFS stopping/stopped events.  This is Windows Server 2012, so the hotfix for 2008 to change the DFS recovery should be applied.  And, this is NOT a very active folder so, I expect there is nothing replicating at the time I issue a reboot.

And, when I try the wmic command to resume replication I get an error.

And, I get these messages after reboot.

So, Why am I able to create the DFSR group, and it works until reboot, then it breaks?  If there is an AD parameter wrong, which is it, and why does it not find that when I create the replication group?

move deleted files

i am currently configuring a server that will only house replicated folder from other servers, i would like to setup a folder that will store file that have been deleted from other folders and would store files that have been deleted from the servers and keep the in case the need arises to restore the files without having to rely on the files getting backed up and then having to go through the backups to find the file to restore.

i have been using DFS and have the replication setup but can find any information on moving files that have been deleted to a separate folder, firstly is this possible? and if so cam someone point me in the direction of finding the information i need to set it up?

We are copying all our shares to a different drive on Windows Server 2012 R2.

Once this is done, we will be making the drive the same letter of the previous drive. During this process, the old drive letter will be unavailable and this will cause all shares to disconnect and remove all quotas we currently have in place is FSRM.

I have found out how to import all the shares.

Is there a was i can do a backup and restore of fsrm quotas and file screens? (note...this not for the templates)
I was using powershell Get-FSRMQuota, which allows me to view the quotas but not to export them, and if i am able to export them, then how do i import afterwars
