Is it possible to sync two volumes in S2D?

$

Hi all,

I have a situation where a S2D Volume was created with double de size it needs. In order to reduce costs the manager wants to reduce replace the 2 disks of 4 TB for 2 disks of 2 TB, and reduce de volume, if possible.

I know that shrink a volume size is no possible. So I was thinking of creating a new volume with the right size sync the content between the old and the new one, and then keep only this new volume with right size.

Is this possible? If so, what would the steps to do it with no data loss?

How would we get Shadowcopy to send notification of status - e.g. successful shadowcopy - with some stats. Either email or event log alerts would do.

If I format this volume to NTFS everything works fine. Had no such problem in Server 2012 R2.

Guess defrag.exe is not working with new ReFS v3.1

File Explorer does not open - Windows Server 2012

Good morning people,

I have had an issue the last few weeks which is driving me insane, I have tried many suggested fixes without avail as of yet, and just wondered if someone else would have something to suggest for me!

Basically with one of my company's servers, we are unable to open 'File Explorer', or use it from the Start button/task bar. When you would click on it from the task bar, it would give me the error of 'The item you selected is unavailable, it might have been moved, renamed, or removed'.

If you search for 'File Explorer' and click on it from Start, nothing happens, no error, and nothing opens. If you right click on it when searching from task bar, and click on 'Open File Location', it takes you to 'Desktop'. If you right click on 'File Explorer' from the start button, and go to 'Properties', the thing that I think it may be relating to, is that 'Target type:' and 'Target:', are both blank.

If you press 'Windows key & X', then click on 'File Explorer', it opens to 'Computer', so I'm also struggling with consistency when I do find a way of opening file explorer, they don't appear to open to the same location, or even open all together at some times.

As a temporary workaround, I have been able to add a shortcut on the desktop to 'explorer.exe', and this opens fine, but then when I click on 'Start', and then search for File Explorer, and open it, nothing opens again, so I think I have provided more of a band-aid styled fix, more than actually fixing the issue.

Any other suggestions would be much appreciated!

Hello,

I'm trying to test Storage Replica. I have two servers in separate datacenters and separate domains.

Both machines are Windows 2016 Datacenter Core, build 1709. I'm logged as domain admin and this account is local admin on both servers. There is two-way domain trust.

When I try to run Test-SRTopology I get error:

DFS was configured and working fine on Server 2008 STD, but now it's no longer replicating.  Here are some of the errors I am seeing:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Due to the following error, the DFS Replication reporting mechanism cannot access the WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) namespace to retrieve certain reporting information. Error ID: 0x80041002.

AND

- The DFS Replication service is stopping communication with partner <server name> for replication group Domain System Volume due to an error. The service will retry the connection periodically.

I also have noticed that there is a disabled sysvol in the replication area which belongs to an decommissioned server.  Not sure if that would mess anything up or not since it is disabled (and not needed), but I can't get rid of it.

Capacity incorrectly displayed on NFS client when quotas are set for NFS share on server

$

Hi I've found that when setting hard limit quotas on a Windows server 2016 (clustered), an SMB share size will correctly be displayed on the SMB client. Meaning a 221GB volume with a 300MB hard limit quota on an SMB share will be displayed as a 300MB mount volume on the SMB client.

However, on an NFS share, the NFS client will see the mounted share with the full volume size instead of the hard limit size.If I write beyond the 300MB limit, the client will get an error about disk full. Therefore I know the quota is indeed enabled. Its just not displaying correctly on the NFS client.

Here is the 300MB quota hard limit set for my NFS share called nfsalias

On both Windows and Linux NFS clients incorrectly sees the full 221GB volume size. I expected it to see the the hard limit quota size of 300MB.

Determine whether a request came directly to a share or via a DFS referral

$

So I have a reverse version of a question I see posted here quite often. I see a lot of people ask how to find out where a DFS referral is pointing them, or which server is being used, but what I would like to know is if there is a way to determine whether a request to a server came via a DFS redirect or not.

For example. Let's say you have a share on \\server1\share mapping toc:\share, and a domain DFS set up at \\contoso.com\share that has a folder target pointing to\\server1\share. When looking on the computer management for the server, I can see open files forc:\share.

But is there a way to determine whether a client accessed the file directly via\\server1\share\file.txt or via \\contoso.com\share\file.txt ?

Thanks!

Moving fileserver with folder redirection and offline files enabled not working as expected

$

Hello,

We need to change the fileserver where folder redirection files are currently hosted, lets call it Server1. We have also enabled offline sync for all these files (desktop, docs, pics etc). So files are now redirected to \\server1\userfiles\%username%. When I look at the computer CSC folder it shows one namespace "server1"

Now I've followed the following guide https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/folder-redirection/enable-optimized-moving  that says to enable "optimized" move of contents in offline caches. Well I did and then blocked my test user from accessing the fileshare so new files would stay in offline cache and not be synced to the server. I created some files to synced folders on the test computer. Then I robocopied the data to new fileserver "server2". Then changed the GP settings of folder redirection and offline files to reflect the new share. After that forced gpupdate on the computer, logged off and logged in.

All files that I created after blocking access to old share were gone. All files were online and the sync center started to download all the files to new offline cache. Now the CSC folder shows server1 and server2. It seems it is not renamed as said in the Microsoft guide. Is anyone else seeing this behavior and is there any alternative way to do this without risking data loss while doing the move? Also the "move contents to new location" setting wont work because there is like hundreds of gigabytes of data and login times would be hours.

Cannot access shared drive when folder name consists of particular CHN char

Hi,

Full path on server D:\shared_e\home\admin bill\ang\港

Share path : \\TESTAD01\home\admin bill\ang\港

OS : Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard

The shared folder is not accessible with this particular Chinese character on a client machine.  We tried replacing with another character, the shared drive is accessible.  However, the folder is accessible from the server.

The Fonts have been applied on the server as well as on the client machine.

Any advice on what can cause this issue is greatly appreciated.

Replacing Raid 1 mirrored drives on Windows Server 2003x64

I have looked almost everywhere for the proper sequence to replace mirrored drives. The drives are getting old but still healthy we just want to replace them with new hard drives, has anyone actually done this? Only 2 drives 0 and 1. SCSI Ultra 320 in a 6 drive bay. Software mirroring with Windows Server Disk Management.  I would appreciate the proper steps for removing, remirroring a drive, rebooting with the new drive and remirroring the other new drive. Just don't want to harm the drives already running in case they need to be put back in the system

How to remove disks from Primordial Pool of an S2D deployment?

$

Executed this to disable auto addition of disks to the Storage Pool.

    Get-StorageSubSystem Cluster* | Set-StorageHealthSetting -Name "System.Storage.PhysicalDisk.AutoPool.Enabled" -Value False

Then the sequence of steps is in order

  1. Created a Two Node Cluster with two disks on each node.
  2. Enabled S2D and application deployed…
  3. Added third Node to the cluster (again with two disks) but the intention is not to put the disks into S2D and keep them locally available. But somehow the disks from the new node fall under the Primordial Pool;

Please let me know for how to get them out & assign to the box as local?

DFSR move to new folder

$

Hello,

I have to move the DFSR folders from one drive to another. I have found a guide and another explaining how to do it. I have followed the guide - robocopy the files, move the share, compare the sizes, move the DFRS; but was getting thethis member is waiting for initial replication for replicated folder message. 4 hours later, as the message was still appearing, I have then run a command to

dfsradmin Membership Set /RGName:<replication group name> /RFName:<replicated folder name> /MemName:<primary member> /IsPrimary:True

elect the primary node and the replication began. As a primary I have used the node with the drive swap. When I came this morning, I noticed that there is a lot of data missing in the folder, about 350gb to be exact. I checked the DfsrPrivate folder and there is 2000 files in the ConflictAndDeleted. I have also checked the other 2 members, but there is not data there either.<o:p></o:p>

I need to move one more folder, but wit the data containg all users private info, so the last thing I want to do is loos the files.

I would like to know if there is something I have done incorrectly. Should’ve I selected a different primary node? If I run the command now to see the primary, there isn’t one again…

Also, what has happened to the data?

Thanks,

Peter

Hi All,

My .bkf file corrupted due to power failure, and now i bought SysTools BKF Repair to retrieve the data from .bkf files. Theare are a few catalogs, say Catalog 1 and Catalog 2, in the corrupted .bkf files, and for some unknown reason the SysTools always loads the same catalog (Catalog 1), but really i want to load Catalog 2, so i deleted the Catalog 1 in the corrupted .bkf file, however SysTools is still loading up Catalog 1 even i deleted it in the .bkf file.

Can someone in here plz shed me a light will be much appreciated.

hi

where is the documentation stating what storage is supported for hyper-v deduplication ?

looking at running RDSH (session host) VMs. Which I believer falls under the VDI category ?

I've read that you cant use local disk on the hyper-v box for storage tho and it's meant to be presented off of another windows server... ? why? in testing it works fine

DFSR Replication failed

I have two servers. The 'upstream' server is getting Database errors for the L: drive. It was still doing the initial replication and has about 4 TB left to go. The drive has free space.

I ran "chkdsk L: /scan /perf" and it did not find errors. The drive still has about 5 TB free. I restarted the DFSR service but I get the same errors.

Do i need to delete the entire Replication Group? I have four other replicated folders with normal status according to the diagnostic report.

The upstream server is getting the database errors:
