DFS-R Backlog Appears Stuck

I inherited 2 DFS-R hosts connected via a WAN.  We'll call them Michigan and California.  We have several replication groups, one of which is massive, in the realm of 1.4million files and 1.6 Terabytes after deduplication.  About 2 weeks ago, all of a sudden we had a 1.4 million file back log.  For whatever reason, that backlog jumped back up to 1.4 million at least once since then.  Fast forward to earlier this week and the backlog of files being sent from California to Detroit is ZERO. However, the backlog of files being sent from Detroit to California is seemingly stuck at right around 80,000 and growing (as users continue to make changes).  For the life of me, I can't figure out what's the hold up.  The DFSR logs are pretty much greek to me.  I've seen suggestions to disable membership of the backlogged node, wait for the changes to replicate in AD and get picked up by the member servers, then re-enable it, to kick off an initial sync.  The problem is, I'm under the impression if I do that I'll lose data that hasn't replicated from Detroit to California yet, since California would become the "master".  Sure I can run a preemptive backup, but there's still a chance that someone will change something while that 18 hour backup runs.

Are there any ideas of what I can do.  I'd love to narrow this down to figure out what exactly is the hold up.  I'm at my wit's end with this thing.

Long term, the plan is to replace this current DFS solution with something else or to at least prune it down and/or break it into smaller parts.  However, I'm stuck with what I've got for the moment.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Slow Saving on Network Share

Our networked file share is running on Server 2008 R2. It's a simple share directory of around 200GB with approximately 450,000 files and 30,000 folders. Saving to this share is getting slower over time. That is, it's becoming more and more common that the user sees a "savings as" green progress bar for a few seconds where previously saving might have been almost instantaneous. I tried creating another share on the same server and saving files to it is almost instantaneous, so it's not the server itself or its disk (which is solid state). This leads me to believe the problem is with indexing or something else associated with a directory containing so many files and folders. I'm looking for suggestions on how I might speed it up back to where it was not all that long ago.

Windows Server 2012 R2 file server ntoskrnl.exe high CPU usage

Hi All!

I have a problem with a Win 2012 R2 server. Users are complaining that file server access is slow on read and write. We have checked network connectivity, pings less than 1ms in every directions, there's no network problems, computers are connecting well, network shares are accessible on server. The only problem I have found in task manager is that ntoskrnl.exe has high CPU usages. It Works on 99% for a minute or two, than takes down to 1-2% for a while and then goes back to 99%. I have tried to investigate it by process explorer and I have found ntoskrnl.exe!KelsAttachedProcess+0x18 as the corresponding thread on the threads tab. When CPU usage raises high there are a lot of threads by this name, every thread with a few percent of CPU usage, in a summary of near 100%. I tried to make a search on the web with this thread name, but cannot found what is KelsAttachedProcess and how to solve this problem, so this is why I'm here now.

I checked a lot of things, Antivirus is not running on this server, it's a hyper-v guest which is installed years before, no change on devices, drivers, etc. And not updated for a while. I don't know about something has changed in the last few days but problem started to happen this morning. Any help would be apprechiated.

DFS-R configure to restore deleted files on data-center server

I have a data-center server and one member server running DFS-R. I know it is not recommended/supported by Microsoft support services but I would like to achieve the following nevertheless.

Current configuration: If an end user deletes a file on the data-center server DFS-R deletes the file on the member server. Is it possible to maintain replication but only toreplicate additions or changes to files but not deletions on the data-center server?

This would enable me to copy an accidentally deleted file on the data-center server from the member server.

FYI - I can't configure read-only folders on the data-center server because I need to allow the end-users to delete files.

Thanks,

Milty

Windows 2012 R2 File server CPU usage %100 for most of the work day

Hello,

We have a problem on our 2012 R2 File server VM, running on Esxi 6 data center (SSD cluster)
During the day peak time we get alerts high VM CPU usage, System process(Ntoskrnl) seems to be constant 100%, in the evening as people go home, server is back to normal (4 CPU, 8GB Ram, 2 NIC assigned to server, about 200 users), so there are correlations between, number of users loged having too many files open that server cannot handle but having a few hundred files open, cannot be the cause. Any idea?

0x80070002 error when entering server share path in 'run' box

Hi there,

On our 2003, domain joined 2008R2 servers, and W7 workstations we cannot access a network share by putting the path in the 'run' box like \\servername\share.

The error that appears is (translated): Network Error. 0x80070002. Cannot find the specified file.

But, when browsing the network via the GUI I can open the share and I'm also able to map the share with net user: y: \\servername\share....????

The XP workstations are not affeted by this problem.

Already checked DNS etc and I am puzzled now.

Anyone?

File Server access permissions

Hello guys,

In our company we have mapped X drive for file sharing.
So there are folders already created by sysadmin for our employees.
These folders are hidden for all other users and see only those who have the right to access on them.
For example: If only user1 has access permissions on folder1 only that user can see this folder.
At the same time, all domain users can write some files in that X drive as well.

So, we need that no one in our domain has write permissions in X drive and only concrete users could write files on specific folders created by system administrator.

Can you give us your suggestions or do you have some experience on this issue ?

Thanks in advance,

DFS namespace server listed as "Unknown" in DFS console (2008R2)

One of my namespace servers shows its site as "Unknown" for every folder target it hosts in the DFS console. It is a 2008 R2 server.

I have other 2008 R2 namespaces servers in the same site and subnet and they all accurately display what site they are in, in the console.

DFS - disable folder target stops replication or not?

need quick help. We have recreated the DFS namespace with two targets and replication group but there is a lot of data to replicate and dfsrdiag ReplicationState still shows updates. Seems like the folder target from the second server should be disabled until the replication is complete is that right? I am not not sure if I can do DFS management / namespaces / ... / disable folder target safely if it will not interfere with the replication. Or is this independent? Looks to me like it is. Please confirm.

Cname authentication issue

i am getting a strange error when using a cname to connect to a NAS. We run server 2012 R2 DC's and have a few server 2012 R2 web servers. the web application is built to use the CNAME to call the NAS. when it does it gets a logon prompt saying the username and password are wrong. When i test the host name of the NAS I get no logon prompt. I have tried every reg hack i can think of and still no dice. Any thoughts.

TLDR

Server connects to NAS through CNAME and gets logon error but hostname of NAS works fine.

To add to this. Server 2008 and server 2016 can authenticate fine using the same cname.

Problems with Server Folders (2016 Essentials)

$

I installed an HPE DL360 gen10 server a month ago running 2016 Server Essentials and most of the hiccups have been ironed out now. However, I'm struggling with the dashboard and particularly the storage. All of the data used by my colleagues is on a separate mapped drive (d:) to the OS partition, running in RAID 10. They are all logged in on domain user accounts and have access remotely using the built-in Anywhere Access.

The problem I really need some help with is that Server Folders seem to be disappearing from the Dashboard Storage section, even though they clearly working and accessible. They are even working through the Remote Web Access (although yesterday they disappeared from it). There doesn't seem to be much reason or rhyme to this but it feels like a fairly serious risk to our business so any help or suggestions would be massively appreciated. One thing that does seem to reliably cause problems is trying to create a new user account (and assign server folder permissions) through the dashboard... this then just hangs at the assigning permissions stage and I have to force close Dashboard... I reopen it and all of the Server Folders are no longer listed for an indeterminate period of time.

Help please or point me in the direction of the right support would be great :)

WS 2012 R2/Workgroup workstations cannot map drives "NO_LOGON_SERVERS"

I have a WS 2012 R2 (AD/DNS) which is the PDC/GC.  I'm trying to retire the other DC, which is a SBS 2008 (AD/DNS).  Both are name servers.  I have workgroup workstations only.  When I take the old SBS 2008 offline, workstations cannot map drives to our NAS and other servers because "... your domain isn't available..." (Error 1311).  Why do the workstations only try to contact the SBS 2008 for credentials?  How do I fix this?

Hello,

I don't understand what happened on my files servers ; when I open a file with a user (random user or admin) : the open file appear in the list below, but few seconds later : the file disappear in the list, whereas the file is still open by the user ...

Can someone explain that ?

I work on this fact cause I wanted to find a way to know if a file (html file) is already open by another user ; and if it is already open : prevent new openning.

The Backup runs succesfully however, as does any backup that i run with Backup Exec 2010 on the same server (running these backups also causes these same errors in the Event Log).

The only oher fix i found out in the wild that even remotely gets near these errors is this one:

http://allfaq.org/forums/t/156203.aspx

I tried this but it simply stopped the backups from working at all.

Any ideas anyone?

Many thanks all.

SMB3 continous availability share leads to 60 seconds timeouts due to missing trailing charachter in UNC path of Tree connect request tree

$

We encounter timeouts of 60 seconds before a SQL backup is starting on an SMB3 share with continuous availability.

After analyzing this problem, we noticed that we can reproduce this timeout when we request the properties of the SMB3 share, so we can exclude that the timeout has something to do with SQL server.

In the wireshark trace we notice the following when we request the properties of an SMB3 share, with the continuous availability setting on.  (We can reproduce this on Netapp storage, as well on on windows file server cluster).

The sharename = SMBTest

The client is a Server 2012 R2 server, the SMB3 share resides on an windows FS cluster.

In the wireshark trace we notice that there is a problem with the UNC path in the Tree connect request.

The last character is missing.  We also tried this with other clients (windows server 2008 R2, windows server 2008, …) and we see the same problem.

I did not include the complete trace, but it takes 60 seconds before we finally get the properties.    (a timeout that is introduced with Continous available fileshares).

When we disable continuous availability on the fileshare, we also see the problem in the trace with the disappearing last character, but we do not have the extra timeout of 60 seconds.   So we almost have immediately the properties windows.  (And also when we try to make a SQL backup on that share, we notice that we no longer have the timeout of 60 seconds.)

On SMB2 shares the 60 seconds timeout is not present either, although ... in the wireshark trace, the last characther of the UNC path is missing as well.

According to me the real problem is caused by the wrong UNC path in the SMB packt (tree connect request tree), which exists since a long time, but in the past we never noticed this.  But now with the new SMB3 functionality (continous available fileshares) that introcuded the default 60 seconds timeout, we are experiencing problems.

For the moment we have a workaround for this problem.  We create an extra fileshare, which name is one character less.  So in our case, “SMBTes”.  The tree connect request tree is then successful.

Is this a bug in the SMB implementation ?  Does someone else has encountered this problem ?  It seems strange that the problem with the wrong UNC path has never been reported before.

thanks in advance for feedback.

Read only access to file after placing in folder

Hello,

I am facing a challange /reqeust from a client who wants the following

2 folders both with sub folders (lets call them Main A & B and Sub folders A & B) and they want to be able to create folders on there own inside those sub folders. Now comes the tricky part all those folders need to be read only after creating.

So lets say the user has created a folder in Main A Sub folder B in there he places a file which must be read only access.

I have been looking at different kinds of scipts (VB to PowerShell) but nothing comes close,

How would one approach this request with out the use of 3rd party tools

Kind regards,

Ben
