Hi

I have a PDC with windows server 2012R2 data center on it.I have shared some folders and files and gave access to some users from another domain network to access them but from clients when I try to open it by typing server IP or computer name in run ,even with administrator user it says access denied, but sometimes it opens the files without any problem.

Also I can open the files on systems which has not joined any domain.

Thanks

Updates blocking access to File Shares.

Hey all.

I have a server running Windows Server 2012 R2.  It recently updated with 2 security patches.  KB4462926 and KB4462941.  Each patch seemed to block access to the shares on the drive to all Windows 10 machines.  All other Windows Server OSs seemed to be fine and I wasn't able to test older versions of Windows as nothing is below Windows 10 in this office.  Once I removed the update the share was accessible again.  it then happened again this week with the second update.

Any idea what might be missing on the Windows 10 machines or the server to allow the connections?  SMB1 is turned off on everything.  I had tested turning it on and seeing if the connection was restored but it wasn't.

Any suggestions would be useful.

Thanks.

Identical duplicate found on file share that doesn't actually exist

Hello all,

I've encountered a very interesting problem on one of my clients file servers. Currently there is a department folder that suddenly has a duplicate folder with the same name. I did discover that there is a trailing white-space in the name, so though they appear identical they are not.

The interesting part is that they seem to be the same object. They share metadata (creation date, etc.) and changing attributes on the duplicate actually makes changes on the original. We cannot delete, rename, or move this duplicate folder. Rebooting the server has not resolved the issue.

Example scenario:
1. Open properties on duplicate folder > Set "Hidden" and click Apply.
2. The Original folder will become hidden.

One more piece of information: We had our backup team mount the latest backup of the disk that was taken, and the duplicate folder does not exist.

Has anyone ever encountered a problem like this?

MSMQ cleanup Interval

Hi,
I would like to reduce the interval of the MSMQ cleanup from 6 to 2 hours.
I'm reading here that the default cleanup interval is 6 hours:
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms704178(v=vs.85).aspx

However I can't find that registry key. Should I just go ahead and create it as new?
Thanks!

DFS New namespace creation. Access is denied to Windows server 2012 R2

Hello everybody,

After adding DFS management and Replication to Windows server 2012 R2 I started creating a new namespace but i faced an error "The namespace cannot be queried. Access is denied" from the two DFS sever.

These 2 servers are cloned.

I tried to create new namespace to the original servers but still face the same issue.

I'm using a Domain admin account and communicate between DFS servers and the DC is fine.

Please advise.

Server 2016 DFS-R Events 1315/1316

Hi,

We are migrating to Server 2016. Part of this is file services, which are currently on Server 2008 R2. We created a new Server 2016 VM on dedicated storage, added it in as a folder target and replication partner but we are seeing tons of 1315 / 1316 events:

1315: The DFS Replication version vector size has exceeded acceptable limits.  A large version vector size could cause degraded DFS replication performance, poor responsiveness of DFS replication management operations,  and excessive memory and CPU resource consumption. Contact Customer Support Services to analyze the overall health of your DFS Replication deployment.

1316: The DFS Replication version vector size has reached back to the acceptable limits.

I can't recall seeing these on 2008 R2. What do they mean? Most searches return results about staging folder sizing - we've already done that process and sized appropriately from before and applied the same to the new server.

Thanks

Can't copy .wav file from my NAS device to any Windows device. "Error 0x80070490: Element not found."

Hi,

I have a NAS device in my home network (Drobo 5N ... https://www.drobo.com/docs/start-drobo-5n/), running the latest firmware. I use my Drobo to store media files (FLAC, MP3 and movies).

Today I just noticed that I have some specific files that I am unable to copy from my NAS device via Windows Explorer to my Windows 10 laptop machine. These are .wav files that I had downloaded from the internet (specifically, I bought a vinyl record of a band that I like, A Perfect Circle, and I received a code in the vinyl packaging that allowed me to download high definition .wav files of the album from their website).

When I downloaded these .wav files originally, I downloaded them to my Macbook Air and then uploaded them from my Macbook to the Drobo from there. I've done this before with other files though, and no problem.

When trying to copy these files from the Drobo to my Windows machine I get the following error:

"An unexpected error is keeping you from copying the file. If you continue to receive this error, you can use the error code to search for help with this problem. Error 0x80070490: Element not found."

I am running Windows 10 Enterprise, Version 10.0.17763 Build 17763. It is a Dell laptop.

I also just tried to copy the file from the NAS device to a Windows 2016 server machine that I also have in my network, and I am getting the same error.

I just tried via FTP to download the files from my NAS device to my Windows machine ... that worked (and the .wav files play perfectly)! So, I only seem to get the error via Windows Explorer.

I am able to stream the .wav files to a music player on my laptop (specifically, the open source music app VLC), and they play correctly! I can also successfully copy them back from the NAS device to my Macbook Air!

I am not having issues copying most other files to and from the NAS device to my windows machine. I have about 2TB of files on there, and a random sample of tests show me that most will copy. It just seems to be a certain group of .wav files (again, that I didn't create originally). They start the copy process, and then it seems to fail right at the end.

If I look at the properties of the files through windows explorer (i.e. through \\NASdevice\share\folder\filename.wav), I don't see anything special; all properties of the files like Read-only, Hidden and Archive are not selected. Security looks the same as all the other files (including the ones I am able to copy).

Any ideas of things that I can try?

I'm having problem where user are not able to access the DFS Namespace during the day, It will work fine int the morning but after few hours user cant access the DFS Namespace path. The only I can fix the inaccessible namespce is to create registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CSC\Parameters\FormatDatabase which fix the problem after the reboot but same problem comes again next day or after few hours

We have 3 DC

  • DC1 Server 2008 R2
  • DC2 Server 2012 R2
  • DC3 Server 2016 (PDC) DFS Role is install on all of the DC. All DC are dns servers

Background

We use to have 2003 and 2008 DC in past where someone did setup DFS Namespce which was removed about 6 months ago and then i create new namespce on DC3 with different name.

I follow this document to setup DFS Namespce

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/dfs-namespaces/add-namespace-servers-to-a-domain-based-dfs-namespace

  1. Did I mis anything from my setup which is causing problem
  2. How to check if old dfs setting still existed on our domian

I have all most try everything to fix this and now i cant think anything to try.

Problems with Server Folders (2016 Essentials)

$

I installed an HPE DL360 gen10 server a month ago running 2016 Server Essentials and most of the hiccups have been ironed out now. However, I'm struggling with the dashboard and particularly the storage. All of the data used by my colleagues is on a separate mapped drive (d:) to the OS partition, running in RAID 10. They are all logged in on domain user accounts and have access remotely using the built-in Anywhere Access.

The problem I really need some help with is that Server Folders seem to be disappearing from the Dashboard Storage section, even though they clearly working and accessible. They are even working through the Remote Web Access (although yesterday they disappeared from it). There doesn't seem to be much reason or rhyme to this but it feels like a fairly serious risk to our business so any help or suggestions would be massively appreciated. One thing that does seem to reliably cause problems is trying to create a new user account (and assign server folder permissions) through the dashboard... this then just hangs at the assigning permissions stage and I have to force close Dashboard... I reopen it and all of the Server Folders are no longer listed for an indeterminate period of time.

Help please or point me in the direction of the right support would be great :)

Remove delete permission but still allow modification of files

I have been trying to setup our 2012 R2 file server to prevent users deleting files, but still allow them to modify. No matter what I try when users don;t have the delete permission they cannot modify either. Is this possible?

Windows 10 1709 + DFS + Folder Redirection

$

Hi, in our environment we use Windows 10 workstations with folder redirection of Documents to a DFS share.

We have a root folder for each user. For example:

\\mycompany\central\user1 (DFS pointer) points to \\filestorage1\central\user1 (physicall storage)

With Windows 10 1703, we can redirect MyDocuments to \\mycompany\central\user1 without problems, but with newer workstations with Windows 10 1709 we can´t be able to redirect MyDocuments to this ubication. It throws a message like 'It can not be redirected to the analysis point.Choose a different destination path'.

If we redirect to \\mycompany\central\user1\another_directory it works, but we need to mantain the folder structure that we have with version Windows 10 1703.

Regards.

file server name change

I am thinking of changing my existing windows 2008 r2 file server name, is there anything crucial tasks I need to be aware of? If I change the server name, will all those sharing directories stay intact? and will it automatically update on the client side?

Say, my network share is \\server1\shares, now, I change the server name and network share will be\\server2\shares. Any workstations mapping to\\server1\shares will they be automatically update to\\server2\shares? or the clients have to remap? Thanks.

ISCSI Initiator sends command PDU with repeat CmdSN after a reject

$

I believe I am seeing a problem with ISCSI Initiator.  When a Command PDU that's sent by ISCSI Initiator is rejected by my target (Reject PDU), it appears ISCSI Initiator retries the same Command PDU but fails to increment CmdSN.  So my ISCSI target, seeing an "old" CmdSN, simply drops it which eventually leads to Task management by ISCSI Initiator.

Here the order I observe:

1. ISCSI Initiator issues command PDU with CmdSN 0x50.

2. Target rejects with Reject PDU, ExpCmdSn in Reject PDU is 0x51.

3. ISCSI Initiator retries command PDU again with CmdSN 0x50.  (against spec)

4. Target ignores the retry.

5. ISCSI Initiator issues LUN Reset because target never responds.  LUN Reset has CmdSN 0x51.

6. Target processes LUN Reset.

I believe this is a problem with ISCSI Initiator as commands, even retried commands, should never repeat CmdSNs.  Is anyone else seeing an issue like this?  Is there a method to formally file a bug against this?

DFS Event ID 4412 says File was changed on multiple servers, but it was not changed on replica server

$

I have 2 servers set up for DFS Replication. ServerA (Windows 2016 Standard) replicates to ServerB (Windows 2016 Datacenter).  ServerA is our production server, where users access files. ServerB is in my DR site, and no one EVER accesses these files directly. The Folder Targets for ServerB in the namespace folders for these rep groups are Disabled

  1. Why does DFS Replication detect files changed on multiple servers, when files are only changed ServerA, and NEVER on ServerB?
  2. How to determine which is the losing file? I can “assume” it is the file on ServerB because the drive letter is E:; on ServerA the drive letter is D:
  3. Further confusing things: the event refers to the “Replicated Folder Name,” but in most terminology I have seen, this would be ServerA; ServerB would be “Replica.” Am I misinterpreting this?

Storage Replica - Log service encountered a corrupted metadata file

$

Hi,

I have a WS2019 stretch cluster lab running Storage Replica Async and I have managed to break the replication, hoping someone can suggest how best to recover from a scenario like this.

It was working fine, and I actually enabled Deduplication on the cluster file server and tested that out. It appeared to be ok, but then I attempted to move the cluster group to another node and at this point Storage Replica failed with this error:

Log service encountered a corrupted metadata file.

I assume that the cluster may not have liked the fact that there were writes going on at the time the async disk replication attempted failover -- whether standard filesystem writes or Deduplication optimisation I'm not sure.

Now that it is in this state, how do I recover? If I attempt to online the disk resource it comes online for a few seconds then repeats the above error. Is there a way to repair or reset the log without starting from scratch? Or do I just need to disable replication and recreate it?

Thanks,
Simon.
