Cluster 2008 R2 file server Client Access Points...

$

If i set up some shares on one Client Access Point, is it possible to move them over to a new CAP with a different name, without having to recreate the shares from scratch? i.e. can i just migrate it from one to the other on the same server? I can't see an option for this.

The reason i ask is that i am replacing a file server with a cluster, and i want to create the shares on the new clustered file server first, before turning off the old one. The new CAP would have the same name as the old file server, so the clients donthave to remap their shares. i have around 400 shares on the old box, so i dont want to have to recreate them again!

I've previously tried using File Server Migration Wizard and it doesnt work. plus we are talking about 10Tb of data so its not a quick process!

thanks.

Mounting an NFS Filesystem - limitations

$
0
0

Currently we virtualize our Windows Servers using XenServer. We are aware Snapshots are available but really don't need that level of DR. We do however, like to take exports of a few select servers from time to time. For these servers, we typically have a C: (OS) and E: (Data) partition.

The E: partition contains a large amount of data. When we do an export, this is included in the export which means, the time to complete is dramatically longer and the storage required is also dramatically increased.

The ideal would be to connect to the storage natively in Windows which means, XenServer would only be exporting the C: (OS) content.

I must stress a limit we face, currently, the only type of storage we can get is over NFS (CIFS and ISCSI are not available).

We face a few limitations with NFS that we've seen :

1. Mount of filesystem is only available per user

2. Mount is disconnected after session is over

3. Once mounted and creating a test folder, we're unable to see "Sharing" or "Security" tabs.

We believe the following URL gives us a solution for #1 and #2 but I believe #3 is a showstopper and our only option would be to get CIFS or ISCSI (or abandon altogether).

http://support.zadarastorage.com/entries/23139498-How-to-access-NFS-shares-from-Windows-OS

If anyone has an answer for #3, it would be appreciated!

Windows 2003 Network Shares Innaccessable

$

Hi

We have a Windows 2003 R2 server housing half of our user profiles and some network shares.  Today, the network shares became inaccessible, causing crashes for our users.  Our other server remained unaffected.

We could ping the server and ping from the server and could still RDP.

The servers performance also appeared unaffected.

MOM and Event logs showed nothing.

We also use Active Directory 2003 and Symantec Anti-Virus 11.5 - Symantec logs showed nothing out of the ordinary either.

We resolved by rebooting the server.

Has anyone experienced this or a similar incident and what steps should we take to glean the best information should the incident re-occur.

Many thanks

Restoring storage spaces after migrating from another computer

Repro Steps:

1. Set up 2012 Server, create a few storage pools (I think they were all mirrored).

2. Original server starts having "issues"

3. After attempting to resolve issues on the original hardware, I gave up and set up a new server (this time 2012 R2)

4. After physically moving the hard drives from the old machine to the new machine this is the state (shown below)

So... I know there were originally multiple pools. There's the "Data" storage pool that's showing as "degraded" and I'm pretty sure I had a mirror running across the two 4TB drives... so how do I piece things back together?

Of the two disks in the "DATA" virtual disk, one disk is listed as having an operational status of "split". What does that mean?

Server 2012R2 Deduplicaton

Hi!

I have a question regarding deduplication and file share.

Disk: 5TB
Data: 4.8TB
Deduprate: 50%
Approximately Free Space: 2.6TB

From File Explorer on Windows 8.1 i can't see the actual free space, why is that?

When i try to copy 250GB of data i get an error message saying there is no space?
But when i log on to the server i can see that there is 2.6TB free space?

Is this by design? How should you handle this in a correct way?

Mouting Webfolder on Windows Server 2012

Hello Comunity,

I try to mount a Webfolder (Web Client Network?) on Windows Server 2012, but it doesn't work. I get the message

"System error 53 has occured. The network path was not found".

I use this command to mount it

net use \\sharepoint.server.tld\share

If I execute this command on a Windows 7 Client, it works.

Can someone help me?

Note: I've already set the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WebClient\Parameters BasicAuthLevel to2 on the server.

DFS Namespace losing link

$

0

Hi Gang,

I have an environment with a domain-based Namespace on two 2008 R2 servers.  The users are all on Apple computers running OS 10.8.5 or (only two) on 10.9.

Within the Namespace, I have 7 shared folders that are all on the same server and drive.  Several of the users have noted that one of the shares disappear from the folder list in their "Finder" and I have confirmed the fact.

So, the Namespace is \\ourcorp.com\admin, and in there are links to IMAGES, ADMIN, USERS, COUNTER, OBJECTS, UNIVERSE and COMMERCIAL

The users will often notice that the link to IMAGES has disappeared, and they will re-connect to the Namespace, re-establishing IMAGES in their list.

All of these shares except IMAGES are folders within the same existing share on this server; i.e.  \\server\oldshare\COMMERCIAL or \\server\oldshare\OBJECTS

The IMAGES folder is itself, an existing share (by that I mean it was a share before I built the DFS Namespace); i.e. \\server\Images.  That is the only difference I can see from the other shares, which were created by adding  a new Folder Target and browsing to the folder within \\server\oldshare.

Some users also complain that they get 'disconnected' from the Namespace (they call it a 'server' because of how it's displayed in the Apple Finder).  A problem arises when they open the Finder/Server Connections and click Connect on the Namespace a second time; i.e. smb://ourcorp.com/admin - they then have a mounted drive called admin-1 which has IMAGES in it and a mounted drive called admin which doesn't.

Might seem trivial, but a common operation they use is to right-click copy a link to the file for email to a coworker. So the recipient gets a link to a file which looks like //volumes/admin-1/objects/small/ones/anobject.png, when it should be //volumes/admin/objects/small/ones/anobject.png

When the recipient clicks on the link it's hit-or-miss whether or not they get an error.  If they have re-connected to the Namespace as the sender did, all is okay - because they have a mounted drive called admin-1. If they haven't, then they can't open the link and assume there's a problem with the system and open a service desk ticket.

Would someone here have an idea of where to look for the cause?

Your suggestions are appreciated!

How to bring unallocated disk space together after deleting the partitions they contained?

$

Hello Community

On a hard disk Windows 2008R2 Server is installed.

The disk was previously used  by on a workstation so it had different
partitiions on it.

I don’t want the other partitions I just want  c:\ and d:\ partitions to be on the disk.

I deleted the partitions  and they now are just unallocated spaces with only
a c:\ drive remaining.

The problem is that the physical composition of the drive from (left to right) in computer management is that there is unallocated space (on left side) totaling  100GB,next (in the middle)  there is the c:\ partition which has 300gb and finally on the right there is another 100GB of unallocated space.

As you can see the  c:\ partition is in the middle of 2 unallocated spaces.

When "dos" was popular you could use delpart.exe and/or fdkdisk.exe but I don’t know where to find it, and if I did find it I don't know if it works on 64bit technology.

Also NT4.0 used to ask you if you wanted to delete partitions before it installed on a new partition or a different partition (including asking what type of O/S NTS you wanted installed before installing) it has been said that the 2008R2 installation can also asks if you want to delete partitions but when I put the installation disk in it immediately start installing so I stop it, because I already have a clean install I just want get rid of all of those unallocated partitions and create a c:\  and  d:\  partition.

So the question is,   how can I put the 2 unallocated spaces together contiguously and maybe assign the drive letters c:\ and  d:\ to it so that the drive  will only have a c:\  partition and a d:\ partition?

By the way, there is also a folder named “Recover” on the drive because the drive use to be installed on a workstation. that I deleted the files of so that I could use the disk but will not allow me to delete the "folder itself" that the contained the contents, so how do you delete that folder?

    Thank you

2008R2 - My Documents redirected to share on 2008R2 server, integrated ZIP functions fail

$

Hi,
I ran into yet another weird issue. To prevent too much roaming, we redirected some folders under which My Documents. They are redirected to the users homedrive\Documents, which reside on a 2008R2 Failover Cluster. Users work from a 2008R2 Remote Desktop Server. Now when a user receives a .zip file, or downloads one, containing multiple files in it, and opens it with the Explorer ZIP functionality, things get weird. When the zip opens it shows the normal explorer window we all know. The user can either drags/drops or copy/pastes the files to their any folder like his desktop, other network drives he has, even his homedrive but NOT his 'My Documents' folder, which actually resides on his homedrive. If he wants to extract the files there only a few of the files show up. Sometimes after a refresh one or 2 more show up, but not all of them. If the user unzips the files to a folder on any other place, and copies them to the My Documents folder it works fine.

So in short:

Users cannot directly copy/paste or drag/drop from a zip file to their My Documents folder if that's redirected to a share.

I investigated this a bit and found the following:

- When the My Documents folder is NOT redirected to a share but a local drive (or not at all - hence going to the local profile) everything works fine.
- Using a zip with only some 0-byte textfiles I was able to trigger it only once in about 100 tries.
- When I use a zip file with 33MB when extracted in 9 files, I can trigger it almost every time.
- Using Windows 7 SP1 x64 as a client with redirected My Documents the same happens (basically the same OS ofcourse)

I completely reinstalled my testenvironment just to test this and the very same happens there. The only changes after the fresh setup of the OS'es is one GPO that only does that My Documents redirect, and besides that the machines are patches through Windows Updates. So no additional software or anything is installed.

Can anyone that has My Documents redirected try that in their environment? Is there any hotfix for this available?

Sub-Folder not removable on deduplicated disk.

$

Hi,

A few days ago I had to copy a share from one server to another. When I found that the copy action failed, I moved the failed copied folder to a subdirectory in the root of the disk and tried to copy the share another way. This worked. However, when I wanted to delete the failed copy that I temporarily stored in a subfolder I got an access denied message. It seems that windows 2012 R2 created a System Volume Information folder with 2 subfolders called Dedup & SRM in the failed copy.

Pressumably windows figured that the second attempt to copy the fileshare contained some files that where already on the disk and therefor tried to dedup them. However, now I'm stuck with this folder that doesn't want to be deleted. Beter, I'm actually a little fearfull that it could affect other files or folders on that disk that might have files which where in the failed copy.

What can I do from here?

Regards,

Joham

We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 server with the File Services role and the Windows Search service installed. We do not have the Indexing service installed. There is a piece of software that process PDF's and spits out a .img file into a specific folder that contains plain text. Our users need to search for a specific string within these files - '9999' to be exact.  Anyway, we have noticed some inconsistencies as it does not always file the '9999' string.  As a test, I put 2 .img files that I know contain this string in a sub folder.  The search only found the string in 1 of the 2 files.  However, in the file it did not find this sting in I can search for any other piece of information and it finds it.

Under Index Options in the Control Panel I have this folder set to index.  I have also verified the .img extension is a file type to index.  If I look at the properties of that file the option 'Allow this file to have its contents indexed...' is checked as well.

Any reason why the Search service is only finding this string in some of the files and not all of them?  Or why it could search for other information in the file and not this string?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We have file server, which is using windows 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition, Service Pack 2. Today suddently no one can access its file share. I try to login to the server and open services, but it is so slow to respond. I have to reboot the machine. After the server reboot, it is back normal. Any one know why?

Here are the system errors shown before the machine rebooted. First question, I am not sure which error really causes the problem. The machine is set to use WSUS to get windows update.  On the automatic updates, it is set to "Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them." Second question, why the machine is still trying to install update without permission? Please help. Thanks.

Unable to start Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider

I was attempting to fix random VSS errors on one of our clients DC's when I found several references to a fix that involved re-registering various DLL's.  I ran into a problem while re-registering the swprv.dll.  It was then that I began reading that regsvr32 was no longer useable in a post Windows Server 2008 R2 world.

Whoops.

I begin searching for a resolution but every response from Microsoft seems to be, "You shouldn't have done that" with no explanation as to how to fix the booboo.

For example in this thread...

social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/2b1f44e0-725a-4fc5-bc1d-69437871fe90/wierd-volume-shadow-copy-service-errors?forum=winserverfiles

The VSS service starts fine and vssadmin list writers returns all stable/0 error writers. I've created the registry entry people keep referencing (the swprv.dll one) and have tried numerous command line attempts to re-register it but so far remain defeated.

Short of comlpetely reinstalling windows is there a possible fix at this point or am I up a creek without a paddle?  I can just turn off AOFO because this is just a redundant DC but I don't like having errors on my screen and I keep getting notices that VSS can't run properly without this service.

Thanks in advance, happy holidays!

greetings,

The file share on one of my windows server 2008 R2 suddenly become unavailable, sometimes I just wait half an hour or one hour or reboot the server and then the issue become solved! I gathered some performance counters for the processes because I believe there is a memory leak, I checked the counters and I suspect the svchost#2 and #3 might not be normal so I'm asking this question if anyone please can check the collected data and advise me.

installed ram 16 GB
