Network shares

Hi Guys,

I commissioned a new APP server, and created two network shares. I created a group and added 6 users, then added the group to the network share. The group has Full control on the network share \ folders.

Users are able to access the folders from their client machines but they are unable to save or copy any files into the folder on the share.

Any idea what might be wrong here? They already have FULL control on the folder\s

Thanks

Regards.

Lanman workstation service hangs

 I have a weird situation.

I have windows server 2012 r2 with some services  (developed In House) that do some IO operation against NAS system. From Time to time the services hangs and I can not kill the process (fix only by restart server). I have tried investing the situation and I saw couple of things: All the hangs services have an IO operation that not completed and the service waiting for that. I can not access the share on the NAS only from the hang server(I don't get any error its just do nothing when I double click on it), other shares are fine and the specific share is available from other servers. When I am trying to stop the lanman workstation it is hangs too on stopping. I tried to kill the lanman via cmd, powershell and from task manager but it's still on stopping. When I tried to access the share from the hangs server via IP address instead of name it is working fine. (I do not have dns - only host file).

Any idea how toresolve the issue?

How to find duplicate files and folders

Hello,

We have a file server which will be running out of space very soon and we need to find a solution for this.

After analyzing we found that file server have thousands of duplicate files and folders which are consuming unnecessary space which we can free and make some free space.

I would like to know from Microsoft is there any way to find out duplicate files and folders without any software if not which recommended software by Microsoft shall we use to find and delete duplicate files and folders.

Thanks,

Corrupt/missing Storage Space

$

Hello.

I had four 4TB drives in a 8TB Storage Pool mirrored setup.

I was trying to use the "Remove"-option to replace one of the disks. After clicking it, Windows became unresponsive and then bluescreen. When Windows booted back up, the Storage Pool was missing, and the physical disks not accessible anymore. Missing in disk manager and my computer, but not Device manager. They are still listed there.

Get-Physicaldisk reports the disks as Starting, OK but Health status is Unknown. CanPool is false. Get-Virtualdisk reports nothing.

This setup was (unfortunately?) formatted with ReFS back in 8.1 years ago, which was nothing more than an experiment at the time and I just kept filling up not really thinking about it.

Expected behavior or an anomaly? When deleting a Storage Pool goes sideways.

The question I am ultimately trying to answer here: Based upon the sequence of steps I took, is this the expected behavior for Storage Spaces?

Preface: I will explain my steps as plainly as I can. I do not seek lessons in data backups and archiving, as I am well aware and had critical data stored safely. I'm also aware that my steps to moving data were unwise, so no need to point out what's already known. ;)

Background and context:
In my Windows Server 2019 system, I had three drives configured in a Simple pool (we will call it Omega), with one virtual drive assigned and multiple volumes on it, formatted with both ReFS and NTFS partitions. I will refer to the drives as Drive A, B, and C, respectively.

As time passed, I decided I would re-purpose the Omega storage pool. Drive C was removed from the pool. Drives A and B remained; the virtual drive and Omega storage pool were deleted, without Drive C being present. Drives A and B were later setup as a Mirror storage pool and re-purposed for storing critical files.

Once I determined another storage pool was to be reconfigured, I began copying files from that pool to the Mirror pool on Drives A and B. As the data was successfully copied and verified on Drives A and B, I deleted the partitions on the source storage pool. (Details of this other pool are spared because it was a completely separate Simple pool and not relevant to the main question.)

As Drives A and B filled up, I needed one more drive available to keep the remaining files. I placed Drive C back into the system. The operating system immediately recognized the drive, but also recognized it as part of the initial three-disk Omega storage pool. Knowing that I had already deleted the Omega storage pool on Drives A and B, I thought it safe to delete the storage pool again so that I could use Drive C for additional storage as a single drive.

Once I deleted storage pool Omega from Drive C, it deleted the new storage pool from drives A and B, along with all the new partitions and data. Everything I had copied over was suddenly gone.

Over the course of several days, some ill-fated attempts at data recovery were made. I was able to recover a few critical files, but a lot of other data was lost.

With the background, my question is this: When deleting a storage pool from a disk previously use in that pool, is it expected behavior to delete data from the other disks used in that pool if they have been reconfigured for a different purpose?

Thank you.

iSCSI kept resetting connection

Recently I had some network changes, and after changes, the iSCSI initiator doesn't work properly: it resets the connection every a few seconds, even the target side recorded login correctly. Can anyone help with this situation?

It says "login request failed" on the initiator side, while on the server-side, all the logs say "log in to the iSCSI target succeed."

Powershell Users in a Group list and then export users recursive

Hi,
I am wanting to find out how to put the two together. I have the following script for finding users/groups that have access to certain folders.

$project_folder = "\\UNC PATH"
get-acl $project_folder | %{ $_.Access  } | ft -property IdentityReference, AccessControlType, FileSystemRight

and then the following for finding AD Groupmembers with the recursive parameter

Get-ADgroupmember -identity “ADGroupmember” -Recursive | get-aduser -property displayname | select name, displayname >C:\output\Members.txt

How can I put the two together so I get a list of all users/groups by using the first script to list them and then list all the users in that are in any groups to a txt file...

PS - Powershell noob.

NTFS rights disappears after deleting folder in Server 2019

Hi everybody.

I am running into a strange problem on my new file server, there are running Windows Server 2019, and I am not sure what's going on, or how to fix it.

Let me try to explain the problems.

I have set up a new Server 2019 server running File and Storage Services, and DFS at the same time.

DFS is set up so that a namespace is showing folders from two local drives at the same time, and under one share name.

This is working as expected.

Then there are the File and Storage Service.

Here I have set up folder security as shown in the picture.

This part is also working perfect, and everything seems good.

But now to the problem :-(

At some point, if I am to log on the server, and are deleting a folder or file, somewhere under the folder shown here, whether is a few more steps down a folder, I am losing the AD Group DD or EE of FF, depending what folders it happens in, under Path2.

At the moment, I am having more than 90 different AD Security Groups created to manage everything under Folder A, and almost the same among under Folder B and Folder C.

So when this happens, every single folder permissions, there are not inherited from the Root Folder in Path 1, are gone, and I have to set them all again.

And while I am doing this, nobody can access the folders or files.

Any good idea, to what's wrong, and how to fix it?!

Thanks

Extremely slow network copy speed

Hello,

We have 2 physical servers.

1st server Windows 2012R2: Intel Xeon E3-1220v3 S1200RP Intel server board, 8G RAM,  LSI megaraid SAS 9271i RAID controller 6x 7.2k 6TB R6, Intel dual NIC XXV710 25g

2nd server Windows 2019: Intel Xeon E5-2620 v4, Foxconn R2-1218R-TH, 16G RAM, LSI megaraid SAS 9271i RAID controller 12x 7.2k 6TB R6, Qlogic QL45212H 25g

both servers are connected to couple of Cisco Nexus 93180YC-EX via portchannel (VPC).

Problem: When we do the copy of 100+ G file over SMB copy start at 300-400MB than it drops to 50MB and later slowing to 20-30MB per second.

So far we have disabled following (on both sides) in adapter properties: Large send offload ipv4 ipv6, Receive side scaling, TCP checksum offload ipv4 ipv6, virtual machine queues

MTU is set to 9014 (same with default value 1500)

On 2012 we are using intel teaming utility, on 2019 we are using MS team that is bundled in windows. We have several VLANs set on each server. Port speed on switches and i Windows is correct - 25G. Drivers are uptodate. Windows updates no older than 2-3 months.

During the copy CPU usage is ~ 10%, Disk queue on 2012R2 is 0-3, on 2019 0-10 .

No error messages in the logs, no crcs on the ports, no error messages on the switches .. nothing. Just the speed is terribly slow. I don't expect full 25G .... but at last it should be 200-300MB/s.

Any ideas why the copy is so slow?

Thanks

S2D - Poor VM performance while StorageJob running in background

$

Hi,

We are running a 4-node Hyperconverged cluster using S2D on Windows Server 2016 and have been for several months.

The solution works beautifully and performance is excellent.

Where we do see a significant performance hit however, is when a node is rebooted (gracefully or not) and comes back up, the resulting storagejob (Get-StorageJob) that runs in the background seems to really impact performance.

The only way to get around this is to shut down all non-essential VM's which helps speed up the rebuild times slightly.

We have configured all of the CSV's to a size of 4TB (any larger and the rebuild times are even longer) but during the repair/rebuild the Virtual Machines really suffer.

Is this normal or is there a way to 'throttle' the performance of the storage jobs so they are less impactful, even if it means it takes longer to complete?

Thanks in advance!

Audio books image building fails on Windows Server 2019 Core (Hypervizor and VM)

$

Hi ,

We are migrating from a 2008R2 server to 2019 core standard with Hyper-v role. 2019 Server VM's with GUI.

We burn audio books with files shared from 2008R2. Now I try do the same, from a Virtualized 2019 server.

The PC's (windows 7) that are handeling the cd's burning process can see the shares just fine, but the burning process does not work. The files are .mp3 files, and some files that create the DAISY structure of the CD. The filenames on the CD (The CD's are in DAISY format) are wrong and do not play on Daisy players. I understand that the burning process is our responsibility.

But the process runs fine when the data  resides on a c:\ drive.

- Data shared residing on the c:\ drive of the hypervizor =The process runs fine (premastering of the image to burn)

- Data shared residing on another volume of the hypervizor = We get an error in a log file of the CD burning software "Overflowed directory" or something

-Data shared  residing on a volume of the VM (.vhdx file) = an error

-Data shared  residing on the C:\ drive of the VM = all is fine.

All volumes are NTFS formatted, so are the clients. We also have XP machine's and they run fine after I activated SMB 1 on the servers. But I believe they copy the data to an external FAT32 drive and to the processing from there.

What is even stranger, If I format the VM volumes to FAT32 the process works, but the premastering is extremely slow. ( Very slow on IDE, half as slow on SCSI, on a gen1 VM). When going back to NTFS or ReFS, the shares are fine, but the burning goes wrong.

I'm not asking for a solution for the CD burning process.

But might there be a difference from sharing files from a SMB share on a c:\ drive then from another drive. Or could this be OS' related? The permissions between al drives seem to be the same.  I also think about ISO levels. I'm not an IT pro, but need to get this fixed.

So conclusion, all is fine from sharing files on c:\ drive's, virtualized or not. Any other drive's  do not work. The file sharing is always fine, but the burning process is not.

Thank you for reading this vague issue.

Kind regards,

Hendrik

Configuring File Screen Template command actions via powershell

Hello everyone,

I am trying to configure File Server Resource Manager via powershell.  I am having problems creating a new File Screen Template with a command action.  I would like the command to run a BAT file and pass the [Source Io Owner] variable as an argument to the BAT file.  I have tried placing my BAT file in various locations due to the "0x80045317, The specified path is insecure" error but I also get a "0x8004530d, The specifiec property is out of range".  I also get this error when I run the cmd.exe command and invoke my BAT file through arguments.  I have researched this errors extensively and there is little to no details about what would be causing them online so I am turning to these discussions as a last resort.  Here are the powershell commands I have tried and their results:

NTFS Symbolic Links random performance issues

$

We are testing a new to us configuration to access network locations.

User A accesses Drive N which is mapped to \\ServerA\Share1
ServerA\Share 1 is a Symbolic Directory link to \\ServerB\Share1

We noticed different performance issues, sometimes it will be just browsing performance, other times it will be opening files taking very long sometimes over two minutes on 155Kb text files, other times copying files.

When copying a small sub-directory or file we received "N:\ is unavailable"

When browsing to the direct path from UserA's (\\ServerB\Share1) workstation there are no performance issues.
When browsing to the symlink path from ServerA there are no performance issues.

The issue appears very randomly only when accessing it from the user workstations.

Workstations: Windows 10 Enterprise 10.0.16299 Build 16299
ServerA: Server 2008 Enterprise 6.1.7601 SP1 Build 7601
ServerB: Server 2016 STandard 10.0.14393 Build 14393

Missing Files, Removed Drive and Drive Letter Changes

$

Hi Guys,

I have come across a rather odd situation where the last 3 weeks of files from a shared location (DFS Namespace) on a Windows Server 2012 R2 file server have been Deleted.

What has happened up to this point:

  1. Robocopied existing files from old drive (T:) to a new drive (F:)
  2. Ran backups through Veeam
  3. Renamed the old drive (G:) and the new drive to (T:)
  4. Left both drives in place for 3 weeks
  5. Removed the old drive from the Server
  6. Discovered 3 weeks of files are now missing

DFS Replication had also been setup on this location and disabled prior to the drive letter change.

My guess is that due to the DFS Namespace/replication users were still hitting the old drive (G:) and not the new drive with the correct drive letter (T:). But the logs don't show any deletions from DFS.

Shadow Copies was also enabled on these drives, but when viewing them, they are all the same back to the date that data is msissing from - as though data was never changed.

Has anything similar happened to you? is there anyway to recover these files if i can no longer connect the drive where these files might have been?

The DFS Replication service stopped replication on volume E:. This failure can occur because the disk is full, the disk is failing, or a quota limit has been reached. This can also occur if the DFS Replication service encountered errors while attempting to stage files for a replicated folder on this volume.

Volume E has free space in Terrabytes.
To me it looks like the database is corrupted on the receiving server.
How can I resolve this?
