I am trying to configure email notifications in the File Server Resource Manager SMTP settings to use an alternate port (port 2500) but I can find no obvious way to configure the port. I am currently attempting to specify the port by using the following format which is not working. Any help appreciated. Many thanks.

WSE 2016 VM - Windows Search problems

Hi all -

Brand new Windows Server Essentials 2016 VM on Server 2019 Hyper-V, brand new Dell T340 - all SSD storage, very nice.

Windows Search is crapping out. Indexing about 600,000 items on two volumes, it works for a minute, and then searches return an unclickable list of files with white generic icons and no data. Restarting the service works for a while. I've reindexed a bunch.

Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks!

DFS Synchronization

Hi all

I have a question, we have to recreate a 6 volumes in a server (for an error in the disk arrays design), this volumes at present are sincronized by DFS (512 mbps, is just for synchronization) each volume has 32TB using Storage Spaces and Data Deduplication.

I planned to move the information to another volume, recreate the volumes and then, move the information to the original volumes, using robocopy, based in previous experiences, DFS resync data between volumes even if the data is already there (file for file).

It's possible to do something with DFS to avoid resynchronization? The data will be copied using Robocopy, I want to use DFS just for resync new data.

Thanks in avance

2019 - Parity Performance is terrible - Code issue?

$

I have an issue with 2019 with both RAID 5 and Parity.

tl;dr version - under Hyper-V i've shown that 2019 performance is a fraction of previous server versions

I have a test server with an Intel Core 15 8500, 32 GB RAM, a 500GB M.2 drive for the OS, and 4x 4TB drives.

I pulled these drives from my old test server which was a HP Microserver N54L running 2012 R2. On this old server the performance running RAID 5 was not great but OK.

On my new server, I installed 2019, and set up Storage Spaces with Parity. The performance was terrible. So I tried RAID 5, and the performance was still terrible although slightly better.

After lots of troubleshooting with no luck, I then tested different scenario's under Hyper-V with some really interesting results. I believe testing under Hyper-V rules out a number of possible hardware & driver issues being the cause.

Check out the results.

Initial tests on 2019 Server, physical bare OS install:

1. Single drive, no RAID – 110MB/s write
2. Windows RAID 0 4x drive stripe – 420MB/s write
3. Windows Storage Spaces 4x Drive Mirror – 400MB/s write

The above three would indicate that there's no driver issue causing a bottle-neck.

Parity Testing:

4. Storage Spaces 4x Drive with single Parity. – 13MB/s
5. Windows RAID 5 4x drive – 23MB/s

Parity is rubbish right? Well only Window it seems. I decided to try to run a Linux VM and map the drives as physical drives to rule out a Windows issue, and was blown away by the performance. Remember this is running under a VM but mapped to the same physical drives.

6. Running Linux as Hyper-V guest, Linux RAID 5– 230MB/s

At this stage, I decided to test 2012, 2016 and 2019 under Hyper-V. Each was configured as a Gen2 machine, 8GB RAM, a 127GB OS drive on the M.2 SSD.

One VM at a time, i'd physically map the 4x4TB drives to the VM, set up the drives, and run some quick performance tests by copying a single large 50GB file. I'd measure speed after a couple of minutes to make sure any cache was full.

Here's the results of that test:

RAID 5:
2012  - 100MB write, 150MB read

2016 - 100MB write, 150MB read

2019 -  25 MB write, 150MB read.

Storage Spaces with parity:
2016 Storage spaces with parity - 40MB/s write, around 300MB read.
2019 Storage spaces with parity- 13MB/s write. I forgot to test read!

The vDisk was configured as follows: New-VirtualDisk -StoragePoolFriendlyName "vPool" -FriendlyName "vDISK" -UseMaximumSize -ProvisioningType Fixed -ResiliencySettingName "Parity" -PhysicalDiskRedundancy 1 -NumberOfColumns 4

I tried playing with the numbers of columns, cluster size, interleave etc but nothing made much difference.

I can't see how this can be anything other than a 2019 specific issue. Any thoughts on where to start to understand better what the cause may be?

Hi,

We are having an issue with some network folders, when the users try to access some sub folders it not work, appear that message below. After the user try 2 or 3 times they can enter in the folder.

It's a Windows Server 2008 R2 file server and the client is a Windows Server 2008 R2 as well. Permissions are ok.

Extended partition but doesn't show in My Computer

Extended an iSCSI mounted disk from 500GB to 750GB in Server 2008 R2 Standard.  Saw the larger disk in Disk Management and extended the partition successfully.  Ran Chkdsk on the new drive and it shows the correct total, used, and free space on the drive.  However, when I open My Computer the drive still shows the same old size.

This is a physical HP server, iscsi drive is from a Netapp.

Things I've tried but didn't work:

1.  Diskpart and the extend filesystem command (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/832316)
2.  Growing the disk by 1-50GB and re-extending the partition
3.  Made funny faces

I've seen this before in Server 2008 R2 on a VM but never on a physical machine.  Usually growing the disk and re-extending the parition has worked for me but not in this case.

Chkdsk results:

Windows has checked the file system and found no problems.

 805206015 KB total disk space.
 470081600 KB in 518767 files.
    250644 KB in 100413 indexes.
         0 KB in bad sectors.
722479 KB in use by the system.
65536 KB occupied by the log file.
 334151292 KB available on disk.

So there are more than a couple threads already about DFSR issues even mentioning this error, however... most of the "files" listed dont exist and have random names e.g.

35464C00

&

C0D56000

the full error is:

Do you have any suggestions what could be causing this or what the files are?

S2D windows failover cluster disk operational status

Hi all,

I have a 2 node s2d windows failover cluster in azure.

When i shutdown a node, the disk rsources failover to another node.

However, before the status coming to OK, the disk operational status is seen as "Regenerating" and it takes 2 mins to have the status OK.

IS it normal? What is the status regenerating means?

DFS-R warning

Hi All,

just want to seek your advice on the warning that has been consistently appearing on the event viewer of my File Server.

Is this normal or I am missing some configs.

I have 2 folders that are being replicated to our DR site via DFS-R that's why it gives 2 warning every 5-12 minutes.

RODC in existing DFSR environment

I have  branch location that currently has two RWDCs and I'd like to create an RODC only in that location and demote the two RWDCs. We are currently hosting a DFSR server that is replicating with a DFSR server in our main office.

If I deploy the RODC only in our branch office will this break the DFSR replication? I am not finding any information if this will be the case.

iSCSI not initially reconnecting after reboot.

Running server 2016.

I have an ISCSI target that this server connects to. After a reboot, the drives do not automatically reconnect. If I disconnect them in ISCSI then reconnect, they appear fine.

When the system comes up the iSCSI init properties Target tab says it is connected. The Volumes and Devices tab has 2 long strings that should be G:\ and H:\. I click Auto Configure and the strings go away. After I disconnect and reconnect, the drives show correctly in the Volumes and Devices tab.

I cannot find anything in the event viewer that would point to what could cause this issue but I could be looking in the wrong place too.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

NTFS permission removed when deleting a subfolder

$

Hello everyone,

I do have a very strange issue with my file server. Let me first describe the infrastructure.

OS: Windows Server 2016
Roles: File and Storage Services
Type: Member of a 2016 Domain

On the file server I do have to following structure/permission:

  • F:\
    • ANWDTest
      • ZZZ
        • DIMS
        • Wagenbuch

The NTFS permissions to those folders is like that:

  • ANWDTest
    Inheritance disabled
CREATOR OWNER - Full control - Subfolders and files only
SYSTEM - Full control - This folder, subfolders and files
Administrators - Full control - This folder, subfolders and files
    L_NTFS_J_R - Read & execute - This folder only

  • ZZZ
    Inheritance enabled
    L_NTFS_J_ZZZ_R - Read & execute - This folder only

  • DIMS
    Inheritance enabled
L_NTFS_J_ZZZ_DIMS_R - Read & execute - This folder, subfolders and files
L_NTFS_J_ZZZ_DIMS_W - Modify - This folder, subfolders and files

  • Wagenbuch
    Inheritance enabled
L_NTFS_J_ZZZ_Wagenbuch_R - Read & execute - This folder, subfolders and files
L_NTFS_J_ZZZ_Wagenbuch_W - Modify - This folder, subfolders and files

So far I think this is nothing special, now here is my issue:

When I delete the "Wagenbuch" or the "DIMS" folder this does remove the group "L_NTFS_J_ZZZ_R" from the "ZZZ" folder AND does remove the group "L_NTFS_J_R" from the "ANWDTest" folder... and I do have absolutly no idea why this is happening.

Does anyone see an error in the setup or did face similar issues? I am totally lost here, even no idea where to start searching.. Google did also not help at all.

Thanks for the support!

UPDATE 1: To be sure that is not an issue of our file server - I did setup the same structure on an other 2016 server, and did face the same issue.

UPDATE 2: In the meantime I did the same setup on a 2012 R2 server and there is no issue at all, so this seems to be related to Server 2016.

UPDATE 3: I just did a test setup of the brand new 2019 server - I do have the exact same error as on server 2016.

Domain Accounts Are Unable To Access Network PC's via IP Address but Can Access via ComputerName

$

Hello All,

As stated in the title, while logged in to a domain account (which is part of the domain admins group), I am unable to access network machines via their IP address ( \\x.x.x.x\c$ ) however, I am able to access the machines via their domain name (\\ComputerName\c$).  Also, while logged in as a LOCAL admin, I am able to access any network PC by either method.

While logged in as a domain admin, if I attempt to navigate to \\x.x.x.x\, I receive an error stating:

"\\x.x.x.x is not accessible.  You might not have permission to use the network resource.  Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission.

Account restrictions are preventing this user from signing in.  For example: blank passwords aren't allowed, sign-in times are limited, or a policy restriction has been enforced."

While logged in as a domain admin, if i attempt to navigated to \\x.x.x.x\c$, I receive an error stating:

"Windows cannot access \\x.x.x.x\c$.  Check the spelling of the name.  Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network.  To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose."

When I click on "see details" drop down, I see error code: 0x80004005 Unspecified Error.

While logged in as a local admin, I receive none of these issues.

File Server Cluster for hosting Service files

$

0

We have a 2 node general use File Server Cluster (herein known as the file server cluster and running Server 2012 R2) with a number of roles configured and shares on each node.

One of these shares on a particular role holds the application files for services installed on three other servers (app servers also running Server 2012 R2).

There is a symbolic link created in c:\ for each of the app servers which points to the share hosted on the file server cluster.

We are seeing issues with the services at random times of the day where they lock up. There are no errors listed in the failover cluster manager and any errors in the app server event logs do not point to an issue with accessing files.

I am not convinced that running three sets of application services from a shared drive via a symbolic link is really a good idea, however clever the File Server Clustering is I cant see it being able to handle something like this.

Has anyone come across a deployment like this or is this a recommended / supported deployment? As far as I can tell through my research since discovering this, it isn't mentioned.

How to simplify procedure of mounting network drives for iMac

Hello, need some advice - we have some iMac's and need to integrate them into AD - is it possible? At least Mac users should have possibility to mount network drives using their credentials. Of course, I can use 'smb://server.domain.local/share' command and mount this network folder but it will disappear after every iMac's restart. Is there some software for this task? Thank you.

setup network share to allow access by computer name

I want to have a network share that is only able to be accessed from one computer and no other computers on the network.

I have tried to add computer Name $ to the permissions and security settings. When I do that there is no access to the share I can add a user to both and then I can get to the share but it is from all computers.

I have also tried adding a condition in advanced security for the user to be on the device and that does not work as well.

How would I set up the permissions and security settings so I can have the share only accessible from one computer?

Thanks

Error reading file on ReFS disk in Windows Server 2019 - 0x80070570: The file directory is corrupted and unreadable

$

Hi! I have problem reading file on ReFS disk in Windows Server 2019.

We have server with RAID 1+0, one logical drive of which is formatted with ReFS for Hyper-V machines (VMS and vhdx disks).

Some time ago we discovered that one vhdx disk file cannot be accessed in file system.  We see this file in file system, but cannot open it, but we can move it to any other directory. We cannot mount it, cannot copy it and so on. Every operation gives out an error:
"0x80070570: The file directory is corrupted and unreadable".

Because of ReFS, we cannot use chkdsk.to fix it.

Also we have used sfc /scannow and DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth. Everything is ok now!

In RAID there was one disk that had health notification to be better replaced, but RAID was healthy. But we replaced it with new disk.

Also we use deduplication service on this logical disk.

Urgent help is badly needed:
1. How can we fix that vhdx file reading error?
2. How and with what programs can we retreive maximum data from that vhdx file?

Big thanks in advance!

Error 360: The Operation failed due to a virtual disk service error

Hi,

I have a SCDPM 2012 Server (Windows Server 2008 R2) connected with Windows Server 2012 R2 Storage Server through ISCSI.

Two virtual disks of 11 TB and 17 TB is connected to my DPM Server through ISCSI.

Everything was working fine until 4 days back, when I have restarted my SCDPM Server for offline backup. I am not able to create any Protection group in the DPM server, neither I am able to create any new partition from Server Manager in the virtual disks.

I am getting "Error 360: The Operation failed due to a virtual disk service error" while creating Protection group and "The system can not find the file specified" while creating partition manually on Server Manager.

Please also find the Diskpart list disk and Get-DPMDisks results.

Here is the DISKPART result:
