2012R2 & 2016 Host Cluster

$

I am new to Cluster technology.

Have: a single 2012R2 Hyper-V Host connected to an iSCSI SAN

Would like to connect a second Host server for clustering and to facilitate the upgrade of the existing Host form 2012R2 to 2016.

Looking for confirmation on my research to-date:

1. I can cluster a 2016 Hyper-V host with a 2012R2 host.

2. Once the cluster is established I can move the VMs from the 2012R2 server to the 2016 host and then install 2016 on the old machine.

3. To accomplish #2 above I would first remove the old 2012R2 server from the cluster and then reconnect after it is upgraded to 2016.

Thanks >> Joe

WSE 2016 VM - Windows Search problems

Hi all -

Brand new Windows Server Essentials 2016 VM on Server 2019 Hyper-V, brand new Dell T340 - all SSD storage, very nice.

Windows Search is crapping out. Indexing about 600,000 items on two volumes, it works for a minute, and then searches return an unclickable list of files with white generic icons and no data. Restarting the service works for a while. I've reindexed a bunch.

Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks!

External hard disk gives error "this disk is write protected" only when I insert to the domain controller

I have new external hard disk in my domain controller when I try copy file to the external hard disk it says " this disk is write protected". But if remove the external hard disk and insert it to other computers like laptop other than the domain controller it works perfectly fine. The only issue is when I insert it to the domain controller that is when I can't copy file to the disk and it gives me this error. If I go the disk part and see "currently read only state: no"

Please can anyone help because I want to take backup using the external hard disk and I think the issue is the domain controller, may be there is something locking the hard disk in the domain controller, but I don't know what that is or how to fix. Also I'm using windows server 2012 as my domain controller.

FSRM problems with perfomance

Hello!

We use FSRM to block Ransomware files.

I noticed a decrease performance of some programs that unpacks files into the appdata directory, or use this directory for temp files.

For example:

1. open excel or word attachments in outlook (outlook copy file in appdata directory and then open it) - there is some seconds delay

If I turn off the FSRM - attachments begin to open instantly

2. Teamviewer (not install, just start) - if i use teamviewer like a portable program (click to .exe file and choose just start), it begin unpack to appdata\temp folder very very slow (about few minutes). The unpacking speed of each file is about 2 seconds, i see the modification date of file.

If I turn off the FSRM - teamviewer bigit to open (and unpacking files) for 10 seconds.

Through long experiments, I found that it is enough to remove the checkbox from the "blocked file groups" and then install this checkbox again - FSRM ceases to interfere with the work of the programs. But this happens again after a few days and again it is necessary to "restart" the FSRM

Why is this happening and is there a solution to such a problem and not such a workaround ?

The problem is present on all versions Windows Server 2008R2,2012R2,2016

Windows Server 2012 Shared Folder

Can anyone share how to solve this problem?

Storage Pools has Siezed Hyper-V Passthrough Disks that contain a storage pool that was used by the client.

Hello,

I have a Windows 2016 server configured with Storage Pools.  The server us also a Hyper-V host.

So here is the issue.  I created a Hyper-V client and set it up to use some passthrough disks.   These disks were not part of any storage pools.  When initially setup the disks were taken offline so they could be setup as pass through disks. All of this worked without any issue.

On the client OS (Windows 2016) I setup a Storage Pool on the Pass Through Disks. Again all of this work as intended.

Well today a rebooted the Host OS.  Apparently the Host OS (Windows 2016) recognized the Storage Pool on the disks that were being used as pass through disks and presented the storage pool to the Host OS and locked the disks. so they cannot be passed through to the client.

I had previously set these disks offline as is required for using them as pass through disks in Hyper-V.  Apparently Storage Pools mounted and used them anyway.

How can I configure Storage Pools to ignore and leave these disks alone. I don't want Storage Pools to touch these disks, I want them as pass through disks to Hyper-V.

Thanks

File Servers running very slow

Hi,

We have two file severs and both of them are part of a cluster.

Both server have 10 core cpu with 12GB RAM, Running Server 2012 R2.

We keep getting call from user to say that they cant access any of the shares from this file cluster but when we switch the server from 1 to 2 it works fine until next day we get same issue again.

  • Is they any way I can check to see what is causing this issue?
  • Why is this happening on the file servers?
  • Is they any logs I can view to get the information on what is causing the issue?

we have around 400 user who might be connected to these two servers.

Active node always using around 80-90% cpu memory is around 60-70%

Event ID 10000 - Unable to start a DCOM Server.

Installed a fresh 2019 standard server with Microsoft server backup (vm on a 2019 hyper-v server).  Server was clean to boot with the normal warnings...  Installed Active Directory and promoted to be an Active Directory Server.  After the promotion we are getting the following error once during boot and at the start of a windows server backup.  The backup actually completes and has been tested to restore successfully.

Event ID: 10000
Source: DistributedCOM
Event Data: Unable to start a DCOM Server: {9C38ED61-D565-4728-AEEE-C80952F0ECDE}. The error: "0" Happened while starting this command: C:\Windows\System32\vdsldr.exe -Embedding

Any ideas on what is going on?  I have dealt with DCOM 10016 issues before and had to set permissions but this one is a little different.  I was headed down the path that since the local administrator is not there anymore after promotion that it is a permissions/account issue somewhere but haven't found anything there.

Also, what is error: "0"?

SMB 3.1.1 connection slow for file shares on Server 2019

Hi,

I have a problem with shares on file server windows 2019.

When i open a shared file and make changes, the process of saving takes too long even some times "Not Responding".

I manage to find out that the problem is when i make SMB connection to the file server with "Dialect" 3.1.1.

When i disable SMB2 on the file server and the connection to the file server is SMB1 ("Dialect" 1.5) i have no issues.

But the problem is that Win10 and newer versions of server do not have enabled SMB1 by default.

Aleksandar

Work Folders and default file exclusion

$

Hello everyone, we are facing the migration from folder redirection to work folders. We didn't encounter any major difficulties but we noticed abnormal behavior regarding the default exclusions.
When the properties of a folder are changed, the desktop.ini file is created which remains in sync and is not excluded. The file remains in this state until the scheduled "Work Folders Maintenance Work" task is executed (typically at the user's logon with a 30-minute delay).
What we don't understand is if it is a bug (versions tested 1803 - 1809 - 1903 - 1909) or is "by design". It is certainly not a correct behavior because the helpdesk would be overwhelmed with calls from people who complain about the non-synchronization of files when in reality there is no problem!
Thanks everyone for the answers!

net use to share with folder with only read permissions gives access denied error

$

Hello everybody,

A customer uses statements like "net use \\fileserver\share\folder1\folder2" to map drives into folders where users need to work frequently. This worked fine in Windows Server 2008 R2, but in 2019 we find that the net use fails when the user has only read permissions in the target folder. net use asks for credentials, and if we pass user name and password again, it nevertheless ends with an access denied error.

Is this changed by design? Why? Or is there something we can do to re-enable net use to a read-only folder?

DFS shares not being created during replication on new server

$

I inherited a DFS system that has 2 server (2008 r2 and 2012). 1t has 1 name space that is off one server with 27 shares. We are trying to add a new server to decommission the 2008 server. I add a new 2019 and a new 2016 server to the replication. Installed DFS replication and added the servers to the connections and the 2019 server started to replicate and show the shares (replication created the shares).

Fast forward 7 days. The new 2019 server shows 1.8 million files and 21 shares....the host 27 shares and 1.8 million files.

ok odd

Reboot the 2019 server due to patches and all shares are gone on the new 2019 server!

Have no clue what went wrong here as we are about to open a paid support call to microsoft.

on the 2016 server no share are being created as each folder is replicated over. When we did the 2019 as it was replicating at first you can see it created each share on the new server when the replication was done for that folder.

Now its not creating any shares.

Any help will do

Domain Controller move issues.

Hello all,

We are having an issue after migrating to a new DC. I am going to call the old DC "DC1" and the one we moved to "DC2". DC1 was our primary DC and DNS running windows server 2008. We migrated everything to DC2. DC2 took DC1's ip address but not the name. DC1 was demoted. Everything worked fine until it came time to shutdown DC1. As soon as we unplugged network cable, we noticed slowness across the board. Windows explorer taking 30-45 seconds to open. Office suite taking along time to open. Programs on PCs performing poorly. We often get not responding messages now and have a hard time saving documents at all. Our main file share was also located on this server and was moved about a week before the shut down. Some users still have mapped drives pointed to the old server but even ones that have never had mapped drives experience issues too. As soon as we plug network cable back into DC1, all of this goes away. We located some things in GPO that were pointed to DC1 but have since got this corrected. We have double checked and even had a third party look at DNS settings to make sure nothing is pointed to the old server. All users are running off of DHCP and this is pointed correctly to DNS. We have flushed all servers just to be sure. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

DFS error during Replication Wizard "It is not possible to retrieve information about the cluster network name..."

So we have DFS 1 server that replicates to a DFS 2 all replicates fine currently but we have another DFS server DFS 3 and we are trying to replicate a folder from DFS 1 to DFS3 when creating a new replication group but get an error :

Domain name:" It is not possible to retrieve information about the cluster network name. There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper"

Whats puzzling this also happens when creating a new shared folder and replicating that to DFS 2.   Weird thing is I can replicate a folder with no issues from DFS2 to DFS3, just can't replicate from DFS2 to DFS1 as well.

I have a ticket with Microsoft and can't pin point.

Firewalls are fine, like i said we have folders under the namespace in DFS 1 that replicates fine to DFS 2. Just when you create and share a folder and try to replicate that, that's when the error occurs.

The dfs server is not even in a cluster.

Not much for logs other than event viewer

6804 ID

The DFS Replication service has detected that no connections are configured for replication group namespace\folder name. No data is being replicated for this replication group.

I did try replicate a folder on C drive that isn't part of the namespace but that doesnt work either.

thanks

Hi All,

My .bkf file corrupted due to power failure, and now i bought SysTools BKF Repair to retrieve the data from .bkf files. Theare are a few catalogs, say Catalog 1 and Catalog 2, in the corrupted .bkf files, and for some unknown reason the SysTools always loads the same catalog (Catalog 1), but really i want to load Catalog 2, so i deleted the Catalog 1 in the corrupted .bkf file, however SysTools is still loading up Catalog 1 even i deleted it in the .bkf file.

Can someone in here plz shed me a light will be much appreciated.

Hard drive filling up - system volume information

We have an exchange 2016 server that is approx. 400GB in size. THe C: drive shows 1.5 TB of space and it only has approx. 150GB of free space and keeps going down each day. It is causing issues and all the other space is being used by the system volume information folder which is over 800GB in size. Just wondering what is the issues we could run into if we do delete all the data in this folder?

Also, what is the easiest way to delete the software to free up the space.

Folder Redirection stops for specific folders when long filenames are encountered.

$

We currently have Folder redirection with offline files configured for Desktop, Documents, and Favorites redirecting to a DFS share with a replication group containing Windows Server 2012 R2 and 2016. Most users have no issues but some of our users, mostly engineers, use exceeding long and descriptive file names. Once the system encounters a filename in excess of 256 (260 maybe?) characters, it stops synchronizing that folder. The other folders continue to synchronize but from that point forward the offending folder no longer attempts to synchronize. This leaves us with users only having their data on their personal machines and it never gets backed up. Is there a way to enable file names greater that 256 characters or at least get everything else to synchronize and leave the offending files to be resolved under "View sync conflicts?"
