Hello,

I have tens of large share folder contain millions files. When I change the permission( add the domain group with permission). it show windows security window and loading security information on every files. It take me very long time. I have searched some solution from internet.

One post create local group first and add domain group /domain users into it, and then add the local group on that folder.

Another post say only change share permission, not need to change ntfs permission.

Fileserver with DFSR ports to open

Hi,

I have fileserverA and filserverB, these are today configured with DFSR and replication is working fine. These are Windows 2012r2 servers. Now fileserverB is going to be put behind a firewall, then what ports needs to be open between those two hosts ?

Is it only TCP 135 and random port number between 49152 - 65535 ?

Thanks for reply.

SQL Server (Server) with an all SSD array - System Build, Configuration, and Recovery

$

Say we setup a SQL Server box with say 12 SSD drives which you would build into 2 pools. 1st pool would be for the database itself, made up of larger capacity drives (perhaps 1TB x 8 drives = 4TB if setup as a mirror on storage spaces), with 2 x Optane in a mirror making up the high write side  of the database (transaction log files, temp DB maybe). The other 2 could be setup as a hot-swap.

Question is - If one of the drives fails, given that we're using Storage Spaces, and are using an ALL SSD array, how long do the hot swaps take to come online if we're talking about total data size on the failed drive of say 1TB ?

The reason it's relevant, is because SSDs tend to fail closer to one another if they're the same age and have the same miles on them (which in this case in this example as they would all be new when the server is built). Because the hot swapped SSD can come online much much faster than a magnetic drive, we reduce the changes that a mirrored pool made up of a single good drive would create havoc.

Folder Permissons

Trying to troubleshoot why a security group can't get access to it.

Folder is hidden.

I can get to it on my admin account.

Two user trying to get to it on their user accounts.

User accounts are in one SG.

I have added SG to folder with read, list and read & execute permissions.

Users logged out, logged back in.

User aren't able to get to folder.

I added my user account to folder with same permissions.

I logged out, logged back in.

I was able to get into it with user account.

Added user's account to the folder itself with same permissions.

Users logged out and logged back in.

Users unable to get to folder.

Unsure why they aren't able to get in.

Work Folders and default file exclusion

Hello everyone, we are facing the migration from folder redirection to work folders. We didn't encounter any major difficulties but we noticed abnormal behavior regarding the default exclusions.
When the properties of a folder are changed, the desktop.ini file is created which remains in sync and is not excluded. The file remains in this state until the scheduled task "Work Folders Maintenance Work" is executed (typically at the user's logon with a 30-minute delay).
What we don't understand is if it is a bug (versions tested 1803 - 1809 - 1903 - 1909) or is "by design". It is certainly not a correct behavior because the helpdesk would be overwhelmed with calls from people who complain about the non-synchronization of files when in reality there is no problem!
Thanks everyone for the answers!

need help troubleshooting Work Folders permission error

I'm attempting to move an existing Work Folders user to a new computer.  When the user signs in to the new computer Work Folders fails.  (We use Group Policy to configure Work Folders when the user signs in to Windows.)  Looking at the Event Viewer on the new computer for Work Folder errors there are two that occur simultaneously:

Sync Share discovery failed. Server URL: https://hqfileserver.flyfish.wan/sync/1.0; Partnership type: User Data; Error: (0x80c80014) There's a problem with the permissions of your folder on the server. Email your organization's tech support and ask them to make you the owner of the folder.
Event id 517

Configuration of Work Folders through Group Policy failed.
Error: (0x80c80014) There's a problem with the permissions of your folder on the server. Email your organization's tech support and ask them to make you the owner of the folder.
Event id 10

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot or resolve this issue?

I've confirmed the user is owner of their Work Folder folder on the server.

There are no related entries in the SyncShare Event Logs on the server.

I had two other users sign in to the new computer mentioned to confirm the Work Folder client is working.

Deduplication ratio

I have a Windows 2012R2 File server with users’ files which is running out of space. The used capacity is about 8TB and 200 GB left. I am planning to enable de-duplication to increase usable capacity. Can I approximately calculate, how much space is saved?

Files become readonly when moving to another wifi access point

Hi,

Some of my users complain that when they have an office file open (excel) and they move to another floor (switching to another wifi AP) they can no longer save the file, it becomes read-only, and they are forced to save-as with another name. The files are on a shared file server. I've found some old threads on the internet, but this is happening on recent Windows 10 client machines with Office 365 Pro+. The file server is in our data center.

Any hints to help me troubleshoot this ?

ReFS - max volume size using Volume Shadow Copy Service - 64TB?

Hi,

Just wanted to check, if I want to use VSS on a volume -  ReFS or otherwise it has a 64TB max size??

I can't find anywhere that specifically notes the limits for ReFS volumes, so assume this applies.

Would be great if larger volumes are supported.

Thanks

S2D Disks - Physical Placement

$

In a Storage Spaces Direct configuration, can disks that are active members of the storage pool be physically moved to a different drive slot in a different member-node and maintain their membership?

Here's the scenario: We have a 4-node S2D cluster (2016) with 6 identical flash drives per-node (all one pool), and we purchased new drives to expand the storage to 10 identical drives per-node.  When the tech was installing the new drives they mistakenly added 7 of the new drives to a single node, bringing the total to 13 disks on that node; those drives were auto-added to the pool, but the volume/disk haven't yet been expanded. What I want to know is if I need to retire/remove 3 of those disks from the pool before physically moving them to another host, or if I can just move them to another host and have S2D update the metadata accordingly.

Thank you,

SysRys

Inherited permissions from "Parent Object" ?

$

0

I've been looking through some of the older posts regarding this issue and no one seems to have a answer as to why it's happing.  It's easy to fix but only if you catch it.

Issue:  Wheather on server 2008 or 2003 we have found that the permissions on a file and folder were wrong based on the security inheritance rules.  The problem perrmission is a inherited permission with the "Intherited From" (advance security permissions tab on said file or folder) stating  "Parent Object" and nothing more.   The catch is we have no idea were this came from.

1 occurrence)  a users was moving a folder then had no access to it.  We found the folder and the permissions were for the most part correct except one entry (group A) was listed and (group b) wasn't.  (Group B) was suppose to be there because the folder was set to inherit, but it didn't.  (Group A) stated that it was inherited but it was not present on the parent folder.   Funny thing was the permissions works as stated, even though we have no idea how they got there.  Group A also stated that it was inherited from "Parent Object".

2 occurrence) a user created a new folder.  This time the folder inherited all the correct groups, but 1 of them had the wrong permissions.  The parent had the group with Read Only.  The folder created had it as Read/Write and again it stated it was inherited, and inherited from "Parent Object".

Now other inherited permisions state which folder it came from if it is applied correctly.  So this is where the "parent object" part is troubling.

Both of these incidents are very troubling to us becasue it gives the wrong or more permissions then what was intended or desired.  And it was only after a user ran into a problem that we discovered it.  I'm now writing a script to see if I can find more of these occurances.  In any case this, in my opinion, is a major problem and a bug that needs to be addressed by Microsoft.   If system admins can't rely on the permissons to be applied correctly then we have to seriously reconsider Microsoft as a secure file system solution.

We believe we have narrowed down the problem to Windows Explorer, but we are still trying to recreate the problem.

If anyone have additional information on this issue please let us know.

Thank you

Hi All

I have a deduplicated drive that filled up on my from a backup application. The drive is 2TB in size. I deleted about 700GB from the drive but it won't give any space back as I assume it is all in the metadata. How do I reclaim this space? It only has 200KB free and hasn't changed. if I try to force the dedup job it just says not enough free space. I turned off dedupe as well and it let me turn it off but nothing changed.. Kind of stuck here..

Thanks

Creating Cluster SAN Storage

$

I have a 2012R2 host server with VMs configured on an HP MSA1040 using iSCSI.  Only one LUN.

I have added a second server to the rack.

After reviewing quite a bit of documentation I am stuck trying to complete the Cluster Validation tests, in particular WRT the storage.

1. Is it OK to connect the 2nd server to the SAN and should I place the drive Online or can this cause data corruption even if I don't access the drive from that server until the cluster is created?

2. KBs instruct to "run all tests" for the cluster validation but when I did this it took the SAN drive offline and disconnected all of the VMs. Fortunately rebooting the host brought everything back online.  I also received the following ominous error in the Cluster Log: (VMHOST1 is the operational Hyper-V host)

Node VMHOST1.xxxxxxxx.local holds the SCSI PR on Test Disk 0 and brought the disk
online, but failed in its attempt to write file data to partition table entry 1.
The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Hi Guys

We've migrated a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 VM from on-premises to Azure using Double Take move tool. The server is a File sever and was working perfectly on-premises (VMWare environment). However, after moving to Azure, the "Server" service is not starting on the VM.

This is the error I'm getting when trying to start it:

This is causing file shares to be in-accessible. We're not able to access the server using \\ServerFQDN or \\ServerIPAddress

Please help.

Data Deduplication service found 2 corruption(s) on volume

$

I was looking through the event logs and discovered that Data Deduplication had been disable and it had found 2 corruptions. The file that it mentioned is not important and I can restore that file from backup.

How do I clear the deduplication error so I can re-enable Data Deduplication?

I have already ran a deep scrub full and that did not fix the corruption. I have also run check disk and no errors were found. This is an 8 TB share that has 5 TB of data deduplicated. I do not have the extra storage capacity laying around to copy all of the data off of the volume to reformat it, I would have to purchase additional hardware.

Access Issues From Network Share

$

Hello,

I was wondering if someone would be able to assist me identifying a very odd issue(s). Any help, suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!

Setup :

Virtual Machine

Server 2016

Shared Folder From VM

Share Permissions - Everyone - Full Control

NTFS Permissions;

Domain Admins - Owner & Full Control

Security Group A - Full Control

There are about 5 users in the security group and only these users have access to this share, mapped via GPO using UNC path;

\\Server\Share$

Share been used for around 2 years with no issues. It appears, this maybe coincidental however everyone was upgraded to Windows 10 around 6 months ago, when the issue started to intermittently happen.

Issue:

If user A has file 1 open and is editing this word document, user B tries to open file 1, they are notified with the read only notification. Great!

Occasionally, potentially once a day, maybe 1 out of 4 times, User A can open and be editing file 1 then user B opens the file, user B is not notified that user A has the file open and both are allowed to edit and the first person to have the file open, gets their changes saved and the second lost.

In addition, I have it where User A has file 1 open and user B opens file 1, Windows then prompts to state user C has this file open.....I have had this when User C in not even logged in on site.

Occasionally, I have had User A open File 1 and it states User B has the file open, User B can be at home and not logged in the network.

This started with one file initially from the share however it appears more files affected as the shared are is utilised.

SMB and Oplock/filelock issues when switching from wireless to cable or vice verse

$

Hi,

Have some questions regarding oplock / file lock when switching to another IP address with the SMB protocol...

Scenario:

User1 works on an file, file is locked for editing for User2 User 1 has to go to an meeting, and unplugs the computer from the dock and goes to wireless instead, which has another IP then on cable.

User2 clicks on the file again, gets the lock instead due to user1 now has new IP address and SMB can’t communicate with User1.

User2 works on the file, saves and the lock function is now removed, User1 now saves the file, which causes the file to get corrupt...

Question:

Is there an function on the SMB protocol that can see that the user working on the file has switched IP address, and still has the file locked until main person is done with editing the document? or is there any workarounds solving this issue?

hi all

i turn on powershell transcription through GPO from my domain controller and i add transcript output directory the issue is when i share the folder from my file server with the below info :

domain users :

read attributes

list folder

create files  / write data

create folders /append data

and for the domain computer :

read attributes

list folder

create files  / write data

create folders /append data

with these permission the domain controller didn't create the transcript files  but if i add every one with full permission everything working fine what should i add to folder permission to have the folder working fine ( and remove everyone from the permission )
