Unable to extend virtualdisk in s2d storage poll

Good day.

I have s2d cluster with 3 node. Each have 4 disk in pool s2d-pool. In pool I created 1 virtual disk.

When I try to extend virtual disk to any amount of space, this error appear:

Resize-VirtualDisk : Not enough available capacity

When I try create new disk, UI show that only  400Gb available, but in real 1,3Tb

I try use optimize-storage cmdlet, but this not help

Storage Replica - Performance Overhead on Server 2019 Datacenter

Hello, we are exploring Storage Replica on Server 2019 Datacenter as a potential solution for file replication.

Does anyone have any numbers on how much overhead from a compute, memory and disk perspective that this solution adds to a system? We are looking at server to server replication using local storage.

Thanks.

Issue with Windows Server 2012 R2 file search after enabling deduplication on a drive.

Hi,

We have issue with Windows Server 2012 R2 file search after enabling deduplication on a drive.

We tried to reset the search feature and reconstruct the database but the issue persist.

It is not returning results mainly when searching for the name field for .pdf files.

Any idea ?

BTW, pdf index is set to "Index Properties Only".

Thank you!

How do I get from a disk number in Event Viewer to a PhysicalDisk in powershell?

$

I am getting a notice in Event Viewer: The IO operation at logical block address 0x9a83a19 for Disk 3 (PDO name: \Device\00000033) was retried.

I want to find the Physical Disk that "Disk 3" represents.  I can't find it with Get-Disk because it is a member of a Storage Spaces Pool.  I have been unable to find any path of PowerShell commands that can get me from "Disk 3" to a MSFT_PhysicalDisk so I can identify which disk is "Disk 3."  Any Ideas?

ReFS - max volume size using Volume Shadow Copy Service - 64TB?

$

Hi,

Just wanted to check, if I want to use VSS on a volume -  ReFS or otherwise it has a 64TB max size??

I can't find anywhere that specifically notes the limits for ReFS volumes, so assume this applies.

Would be great if larger volumes are supported.

Thanks

S2D Disks - Physical Placement

In a Storage Spaces Direct configuration, can disks that are active members of the storage pool be physically moved to a different drive slot in a different member-node and maintain their membership?

Here's the scenario: We have a 4-node S2D cluster (2016) with 6 identical flash drives per-node (all one pool), and we purchased new drives to expand the storage to 10 identical drives per-node.  When the tech was installing the new drives they mistakenly added 7 of the new drives to a single node, bringing the total to 13 disks on that node; those drives were auto-added to the pool, but the volume/disk haven't yet been expanded. What I want to know is if I need to retire/remove 3 of those disks from the pool before physically moving them to another host, or if I can just move them to another host and have S2D update the metadata accordingly.

Thank you,

SysRys

Windows Backup fail after update, got VSS error

Hi all, need your kind help, thanks.

Enviroment is Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard  6.3.9600 Build 9600 and Veritas cluster implemented, after online windows update, the windows server backup function cannot work.

Whenever enter the backup UI or using the wbadmin CLI, I got error message as below:

A Volume Shadow Copy Service operation error has occurred: <0x80042401>

"There are too few disks on this computer or one or more of the disks is too small. Add or change disks so they match the disks in the backup, and try the restore again.

Creating Shadow Copies using VSSADMIN vs DISKSHADOW

$

Hi,

I'm taking a closer look at 2 seemingly similar commands : VSSADMIN andDISKSHADOW. I'm scratching my head a bit, because most of other commands do different tasks. But if you take a look, what is the difference between those:

vssadmin create shadow and diskshadow create/delete/revert.

Vssadmin create shadow

Vssadmin list shadows

Vssadmin delete shadows

Diskshadow:

list writers list shadows list providers

delete shadows

reverthttps://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/administration/windows-commands/vssadmin

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/administration/windows-commands/diskshadow

They at least seem to do exactly the same thing. Diskshadow has some extra options the other does not have. Can somebody just explain this in plain language?

Thank you

File Server Resource Manager (FSRM) Classification does not work with long path (>260 Chars)

Hey Guys,

I have a problem that classification via the FSRM does not work, if the FilePath is longer than 260 Chars. In the screenshot you can see 2 Files. One Filepath contains 260 chars, the other one is 261 chars. As you see there is no "Classification" tab, and therefore "File Management Tasks" are not working for these Files.

The Files are locally on the Fileserver, on a local Disk. I recreated this issue because of a request of a customer of mine, who needs this to work. As I see it, its a bug. No findings in Technet or docs.microsoft.com so far.

Anyone has any suggestions, or hint what I might do to migitate this problem?

Guys.

Got a weird issue. I have two Server 2012 R2 servers running DFS. I have been using the get-dfsrbacklog command for months with out issue. After i restarted SERVER-B i am unable to retrieve the DFS backlog from either SERVER-B or SERVER-A. I receive the message below.

I am unsure what the issue is and google is not turning up much. Can anyone advise?

File Auditing - File Delete - No 4663 events for me

$

Hi, I have enabled ‘Delete File’ File Auditing by:

  1. Apply GPO - Advanced Audit Policy Configuration - Object access - Audit File System – Success
  2. Set Auditing permissions on the SACL for Principle - Everyone - Delete, Delete Subfolders and files

Monitoring the event logs I can see plenty of 4663 logs for my users so it does appear to be working, however upon me testing deleting a file, I don’t get a 4663. The file definitely has the appropriate audit perms and I can see in the event logs 4659 logs for the file deletion but not 4663. If I RDP onto the file server directly and delete the same file using my admin account I do get a 4663.

That makes me wonder if it has something to do with the way I am connecting to the File Share – I have a local mapped drive. When I delete files I get the “Are you sure you want to permanently delete this file” warning.

Server 2012R2

Client computers – Windows 10 1903

Does anyone have any ideas on this? I want to make sure the file auditing is robust before going any further with this mini project.

Thanks!

Window Search Issue - Server 2019

We have a strange issue with a new Server 2019 file server where the Search service stops working properly until restarted. The issue is as follows...

When users search the results all have blank icons and double clicking on them doesn't launch the file/app. This is company wide on all computers (Win10 Pro).

Restarting the Windows Search service resolves the issue and search works for all users...

I noticed that when in a failed state if i go to the Indexing Options on the Server it only shows Internet Explorer History but if i restart the Windows Search service all the other included locations then appear in the list.

So far I have tried installing all Windows updates and rebuilding the Search index but the same issue occurs. Nothing in the even logs seem to relate to this issue. The server does have the MS Filter Pack Installed.

Any ideas or anyone else getting this issue?

Just file user creator can modify their files

Hi all,

Is it possible that in a share just the user creator of a file can modify it?
Other user that can access to the same share can just read this file.

How can I do it?
Do I need to install particular roles on my Windows Server?

Thanks

Workfolders issues

Hi all,

Since the most recent official Windows 10 update (1803 April update) I'm experiencing some issues.

* In explorer, some pictures get thumbnails, some don't (as seen in the figure). Tried deleting the thumbnail cache but that doesn't help.

* The Photos app doesn't sync pictures from the WorkFolders anymore, and doens't show thumbnails anymore for videos.

* In exlporer the icons for 'Download state' aren't correct. Some folders have a 'Failed sync' icon, but all the files inside are downloaded correctly.

A clean install of the client operating system doesn't help. Anyone else experiencing these issues? Is a fix available soon?

MS Excel file save issue with WebDAV on IIS

Hi all,

we're using the WebDAV module of IIS to share and edit files that are actually hosted in AWS.

Now when a user opens an Excel file modifies it, he can save it some times very well, but then out of a sudden he receives the error:UPLOAD FAILED Your file wasn't uploaded because your changes can't be merged with changes made by someone else.

That happens, even if the user is the ONLY one that is having that file open at that time.Any clue what might cause this issue? Or where to start looking, if this issue reoccurs?

Any ideas?

Event ID 10000 - Unable to start a DCOM Server.

$

Installed a fresh 2019 standard server with Microsoft server backup (vm on a 2019 hyper-v server).  Server was clean to boot with the normal warnings...  Installed Active Directory and promoted to be an Active Directory Server.  After the promotion we are getting the following error once during boot and at the start of a windows server backup.  The backup actually completes and has been tested to restore successfully.

Event ID: 10000
Source: DistributedCOM
Event Data: Unable to start a DCOM Server: {9C38ED61-D565-4728-AEEE-C80952F0ECDE}. The error: "0" Happened while starting this command: C:\Windows\System32\vdsldr.exe -Embedding

Any ideas on what is going on?  I have dealt with DCOM 10016 issues before and had to set permissions but this one is a little different.  I was headed down the path that since the local administrator is not there anymore after promotion that it is a permissions/account issue somewhere but haven't found anything there.

Also, what is error: "0"?
