Mac SMB Connection Requires FQDN

Hey guys,

I'm having a little bit of a weird issue that I haven't encountered before. We moved from Server 2003 to Server 2k8R2 and most of the migration went fine, but there's one issue left.

When trying to connect to the SMB shares from a mac, if I connect using smb://Server1 then it "connects" and shows no volumes available. However, if I connect with an IP Address or Server1.domain.net it will allow me to see all of the available shares.

It seems like this could have something to do with NetBios or WINS, but I haven't been able to figure it out thus-far. Just to be clear, these Macs are not bound to the domain, they're just connecting to shares via SMB.

The other issue in line with this is that I can only authenticate to the server from the Mac if I use an administrator account. From a windows account, regular users have correct permissions for the shares and can access the server, however Mac users can only create a server connection with an admin account.

Thanks in advance!
