I recently moved some data from a Server 2003 to a new Server 2008 R2 using Robocopy. The data moved completed without errors and after creating the shares on the new server all users started to access the data from the new server however after a few days users started to report intermittent problems when trying to save edited files etc.
Depending on the application that is trying to save various errors could be generated for example: Notepad with a simple text file could error with "Cannot create the FILENAME.txt file. Make sure that the path and filename are correct." Microsoft office applications may give errors suggesting that another user could have the file open.
The odd thing is that this is an intermittent problem but if the user tried to save the file moments later it will save without errors or problems.
Despite being convinced this wasn't a permissions problem I reset the ownership of the folders and files under the share then reset the permissions but the problem still continues. To try and reproduce the fault on demand I have created a small test Microsoft Excel file and if I try and save it using CTRL S frequently over a short period of time I will see the saving progress bar pause but no error is generated. If I look in the folder that contains this file I will see multiple temp files that Excel has created when presumably it was having problems saving. This behaviour can be reproduced on demand.
I decided to create a new shared area on the same server and I replicated the ownership and permissions from the other share and copied a folder that contains the test file from the original share to the new share and after testing opening and saving from this location I am unable to reproduce the problem.
I am now running short of ideas and may have to move the data back to the original server if I am unable to resolve the problem.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Thanks,
