Migrate from 2008 File Server Fail-Over Cluster to Server 2012 Scale-Out File Server Cluster using Cluster Shared Volumes
We've migrated from a 2008 SP2 x86 fail-over cluster to a Server 2012 Failover over Cluster.
Our original plan was to create the new cluster as a Scale-Out File Server using Cluster Shared Volumes.
However when testing we encountered the following issues:
1. Users accessing shares from Win7+ were ok, but Win XP machines were prompted for username/password.
2. We could not use DNS Aliases to point the virtual file share as it would return a blank folder.
Due to time constraints we decided to remain on a traditional active/passive File Server cluster running on the new 2012 Servers.
My goal is to move to a multi node, scale-out file server cluster and use CSV, however I need advice on the following:
1. Converting an existing NTFS volume (3TB/2.7TB used) to CSVFS, how long does it take and does it retain its NTFS security.
2. How can we maintain a share path using a DNS alias and allow all clients (Win XP, Win7 and Win8) to connect and access.
3. We are transitioning from XP to 7 and 8 so require co-existence and support for both, this could take 9-12 months to complete.
4. Security requirements for XP when browsing to a Scale Out FS CSV share, what and where this needs to be configured or possible registry changes.
Any help in this area is greatly appreciated ...

Yusuf
