I got an unusual request for folder permissions.  A user needs to get in about 4 sub-folders deep, but not be able to open any files that exist within that path.  I thought I could just give  "Traverse folder/execute file", but that didn't work.  He cannot open the root of this path, which has the traverse/execute.

This is what I've got:   \rootFolder\Level1\Level2\Level3\Level4

At rootFolder I have Traverse/Execute, This folder and SubFolders.  He cannot open that folder.  

He has traverse down to Level3 and on Leval4 he has Modify.

How can I let him traverse starting at rootFolder (it is not the root of the drive), and not be able to "Open" files along the way?

We use DFS and DFS-R.  Server 2008 R2.  We have our files split between 2 file servers, roughly 4 TB on each one.  They replicate to one partner each at our DR site.

To avoid the problems caused by a lack of distributed file locking in DFSR, we have all DFS targets on the DR side disabled so that users only get referrals from the production side.

But I believe that in a failover situation users just would not get a referral, if a file server on the production side went down, because I have all targets on the DR side disabled.

We have quite a few DFS targets.  Maybe 25.  Does anyone know of a script, or some other method, to automate changing the targets that are disabled to enabled, and the targets that are enabled to disabled?

I have two SAS raid-0 arrays on my workstation/test server. I usually keep data on array2 and OSs on array1.

Array1 has 3 OS installations since I am testing a few things using win8, hyperv2012 and win2012R2. I created the Win2012R2 volume with 80GB and left about 700GB for use by VMs but after installing the OS, the volume wizard does not show any space for the drive. 

Volumes for the OS drive shows 100% allocated for 931GB but I know that there is only about 300GB that was partitioned including Win2012 so I am unsure how to release that space for use.

Disks shows that the OS is installed on a MBR partition on an 931GB SAS drive.

I have another drive in the system for the OS and a few attached backup drives to move the other OS installs in case I have to reformat array1.

Any suggestions on how to access and use the 700GB unused space on array1?

We’ve had our own domain in the past years running a domain based DFS namespace. We and several other companies were merged with another organization, and all domains were consolidated into one. Now we each have our own forest.   However, our information is very confidential and should not be accessible to across forests. Now, our DFS namespace is visible to everyone, (security issue).  How can I hide our domain level DFS from other users in other forests?  *Note: One the main reasons to use a domain level domain namespace is for failover in our remote sites.

Hello, 

I am trying to connect  to my Windows 2008 R2 server using UNC and it gives me an error message saying please check the name of the machine and below " the network path was not found.         I can ping the server by ipaddress and computer name . i have enabled certain services like browser , server and BITS . but till now nothing . When i run diagnostic from my windows 7 pro machine it gives me an error saying make sure the server allows incoming connections for  file and printer sharing . 

Need some help here urgent.

As the title states, when trying to create a share from the Web Sharing tab on a folder, the Internet Information Services Share On: drop down box is blank.  IIS is running, there are sites running fine on the server.  WebDav is installed.  If you click the "Share this folder" radio option explorer.exe crashes and restarts.  I have a feeling it's because of the empty site list.  Any idea how to fix it?  Is the IIS Metadata file(s) corrupted and causing the problem?

I was not able to NFsv3 mount from z/OS NFS client to windows server 2003/2008 NFS server with enabled "allow unmapped user unix access (by UID/GID)", but this is working with Windows server 2012. Windows server return AUTH_ERROR for NFSv3 procedure 20 PATHCONF.

However, NFSv3 mount from z/OS NFS client to Windows server 2003/2008 NFS server with enable "allow anonymous access" is OK.

It seems like Microsoft fix the this NFSv3 mount issue on server 2012, bit is not fix back into server 2003/2008. how will I know if MS plan to put this fix in lower server?

    We have a test hyper-V for various VMs. It is naturally easier for us to start from Parent disk which is sys prepped and move on.

    On the other hand, deduplication(2012 R2) claims to be most effective on VHD library data.

    Is the effectiveness of deduplication different when it comes to differencing VHDs as compared to other disks ?

    Assuming it only works when VM is once off but then What is the algorithm ? and how much time it takes to de-dupe. What happens when the original old files (referenced chunks) are updated ?

I can't find any doumentation for setting up iSNS registration for a iSCSI target in Windows 2012 R2.

I did find some documentation that is for 2012 non R2:

It said to do the following in powershell:

Set-WmiInstance -Namespace root\wmi -Class WT_iSNSServer –Arguments @{ServerName="ISNSservername"}

Doing that I get the following response:

I have gotten all of my iSCSI initiators registering with the iSNS server, but without the target registering, there isn't really a point to it.

Just started after I moved my folder redirection from a server share to dfs.  Running Windows 7 SP1, server is 2008 R2.  If I change the GPO to point to \\server\share I don't get the warning.  Annoying but not fatal.  Thanks.

Hello, this is my first post here so I don't know if I choose the right category......

But anyway, my problem is like this

I‘ve got a win 2012 r2 server(192.168.1.10), installed with essential experiences and anything comes with that;

A win 7 PC(192.168.1.2) connected to the server by connecter;

A Android smart phone(192.168.1.5). 

There is no problem with the PC visiting the server's SMB share & the phone visiting the PC's SMB share, but I can't access the server's share from my smart phone.

When I'm using x-plore I got “failed to connect", and when using ES file explorer, I got a flash of ”please wait“ and nothing happens.

 I've tried turn off the firewall ,no help.

checked the firewall log , I found "2014-03-14 16:08:30 ALLOW TCP 192.168.1.5 192.168.1.10 33531 445 0 - 0 0 0 - - - RECEIVE". I suspect this means the firewall has nothing to do with my problem.

checked event log, no finds(I'm not sure what to look for, but I didn't find anything about my phone's ip under things starts with SMB( ex: SMBClient, SMBServer.....))

enabled ”send unencrypted password to 3rd-party SMB server“ in local security policy, nothing changed

I have no idea where the problem lies, can anyone help me with this stuff?

I setup a test environment to try out folder redirection. It seems to work well however I have a few questions.

1. Can this be setup on a DFSR namespace so that if users travel between remote offices their files move?

2. If the server hosting the files goes offline how can you set the folders up as a offline file?

3. What other problems might we encounter if we try this? Currently we have 2008 r2 and 2012 servers and we have 4 offices with about 100 users.

We have a user who has a mapped home drive with a 2Gb FSRM quota.

The user reached 99% of the quota which was correctly shown in the FSRM console. They deleted 1.4Gb of data from this mapped drive, however FSRM console still shows that they are using 99%.

If the user highlights all of the files/folders in the mapped drive and goes to right-click Properties, it correctly shows that there is around 600Mb in use. If they click on the mapped drive and go to properties, it incorrectly shows 2Gb in use.

From the server side, I can highlight the folder that the drive is mapped to and view the properties, and it correctly shows 600Mb in use. If I look in the FSRM console, it still says there is 2Gb of data there.

I removed the quota to allow the user to use their home drive. I asked them to copy a large file in then I refreshed the FSRM console, which immediately showed an increase to 104%. The user then deleted the file and the console showed it drop back down to 99%. I have also made the user the owner of the folder to see if that helped but it changed nothing.

Does anyone have any idea how to get FSRM to correctly report the usage of the folder?

Hi Guys

As the title suggests i'm looking for help reducing the size of a LUN that has already been expanded.

Recently I was asked to extend a drive on a server. The drive in question was on top of a 600GB LUN connecting over Fibre Channel. So I extended the LUN to 850GB and used DISKPART to extend the drive so it now appears as 850GB within Server 2008.

However, The request was wrong and instead they have asked me to expand a different LUN by 250GB which I've now done. But as you can imagine I would like to reclaim the 250GB that I previously added.

What is the best way to go about this?

I've tested my backups so i'm confident that I can recover the data if something goes wrong but obviously i'd like to avoid that :)

Can I simply shrink the size of the partition in Disk Management and then reduce the size of the LUN on my SAN? or do I need to create a new LUN and move the data onto the new drive?

I can confirm that no new data has been written to this drive since the expansion.

Hello

I have DFS server running on server 2008 R2

Created namespace server \\server\users and then namespace created under that called test2.

enabled access-based enumeration for the namespace server \\server\users by right clicking that and then Advanced.

After that click namespace test2 and then clicked advanced and select "set explicit permissions on the DFS folder" -> configure view permissions and explicitly added only one user and given allow permission to it.

In the right pane selected namespace under folder target right click -> properties - > share permission and added user and given full permission.

After logging to that user its asking for login credentials I dont know what i am missing.

Hardware - Xeon E3 server, 16GB ram, 256Gb SSD, and 7 3-4 TB drives

Hyper-V core 2012 R2 installed on the SSD - did not take much space

Goal: To setup 2 VMs, one Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2 (use=home server) using a majority of the space, and hopefully backup space too, and a separate VM for Ubuntu LAMP server for learning.

I have a separate machine with Windows 8.1 Pro, remote desktop to the Hyper-V computer is working as is Hyper-V Manager.

I have 7 HDDs, right now all in one storage pool.  That might have been a mistake, as some of those drives are supposedly for server backup.

Questions:

Should I plan on installing WSE 2012 R2 to the SSD? 

Should I create one giant drive from the storage pool, or separate drives for the VM uses.  I guess I am not sure whether to create one giant storage space, and then create multiple VDHX drives as needed for the VMs.   Can WSE 2012 backup to a Virtual Drive?

For instance should I create one 1TB storage space, format it, give it a letter, and then create the VM for the Ubuntu LAMP install?

Create another storage space for the data for the WSE, and another for Backup space for WSE?

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Hello

We are running DFS namespace on Windows 2008 R2 based servers. We have a requirement to do a replication of 800 Gb data between two regions as the data is required to be accessed from both the locations.  Instead of doing DFS replication of  such huge data, can we copy the data on a USB Harddisk, copy it at the remote location and do the DFS replication  - so that only the data that were changed during the transition will get copied over, instead of the whole. Is that workable?

I initially data deduped an entire volume and then later added two directories to the exclude list (because of some incompatibility between deduplication and indexing. I need to be able to index these two directories). I cannot figure out how to get these two folders to unoptimize.

I have fun both the scrubbing and garbage collection jobs with the -full parameter, but these two folders are still deduped. Is there a way I can tell the service to unoptimize a single directory?
