Search by date, exclude by folder name

$

We have a client that was recently affected by the CryptoLocker malware. We are restoring folder by folder rather than a blanket restore since some files that were not affected may be overwritten by older backups if they were created in that window between last backup and infection. Is there a way in Windows Server 2008 R2 to search for folders and files by date but exclude specific folder name? Example: we've already marked several folders as foldername.infected so we know which folders to restore. I'd like to exclude those folders from my search by searching for all folders modified on a specific date but not include the folders that include the word "infected."

Without any scripting is there a way to do this?

Thanks.

What is backlog in DFSR?

What is exactly backlog in DFSR? Is the files that are not replicated yet to the target server or if we change security on a file and this is not finished to replicate can be considered as a backlog too?

possible NFS version conflict when implementing LINUX BOOT over Windows deployment server

I have configured windows deployment service machine running on windows server 2008 r2 which I was using to install any version of windows.
I tweaked this server to be able to install the linux and major part is done. I can boot client linux installation and beginning of installation goes fine (successfully downloads vmlinuz kernel and initrd). However during later stage I had to supply NFS information to client setup.

In order to do so I had to create NFS share in Windows Server 2008 r2 machine from server manager -> file services -> share and storage management.
However it still complained about the share and from the packet sniffing program, I suspected the version conflict.
During the nfs request, I can see the nfs request coming from client is NFS V4 whereas the reply decoded by packet sniffer is min/max supported version is V2-V3 respectively.

Here is the screenshot of the packet sniffer:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/kmhya3vblwqds ... .V2.V3.PNG

Assuming my presumption is correct, is there a way to circumvent? For me the best way is to enable V4 NFS support on WINDOWS 2008 however at this time I have no clue on this one.

Does someone have any suggestion for me? Thanks!

Enabling Auditing on a File Server

If we enable auditing on a file server, what sort of performance hit can we expect?

Also, when we audit a particular folder, is it acceptable to add "Everyone"? And what sort of information does Auditing give us?

When i turn off Secondary domain controller the users have issue with files provided by Primary DC also this errors appears using unc path directly to Primary server. Browsing of folders is slow and sometimes cant open excel files. This error is randomly but if i turn on secondary domain back all seems ok...

Windows 2008 R2 - ..\winsxs disk space issue

I'm having the known issue with ..\winsxs causing the system partition to become full.

Several months ago I did the follow fix to apply service pack 1 and this did free up some disk space.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2795190

I now have the same disk space issue with ..\winsxs and the KB2795190 fix didn't clean up any disk space. I received "Service Pack Cleanup can't proceed: No service pack backup files were found."

I also found the link below saying the bug has been resolved with Windows 7. I installed desktop experience and attempted to patch cleanmgr.exe, but wasn't able to find a compatible patch for Windows 2008 R2. I did attempt to apply the Windows 7 patch (KB2852386), but received "The update is not applicable to your computer". Is there a patch for Windows 2008 R2 SP1?

Server 2012 R2 File Server Stops Responding to SMB Connections

$

Hi There,

Massive shot in the dark here but I am struggling with a pretty major issue atm.  We have a production file server that is hosted on the following:

Dell MD 3220i -> iSCSI -> Server 2008 R2 Hyper-v Cluster -> Passthrough Disk -> Server 2012 R2 File Server VM

Essentially 3 times now, roughly a month or so apart.  The file server stops accepting connections.  During this time, the server is perfectly accessible through rdp or with a simple ping.  I can browse the files on the server directly but no-one appears to be able to access the shares over SMB.  A reboot of the server fixes the issue.

As per a KB article I removed nod antivirus from the server to rule out a conflicting filter mode driver after the second fault.  Sadly yesterday it happened again.

The only relevant errors in the servers log files are:

SMB Server Event ID 551

SMB Session Authentication Failure Client Name: \\192.168.105.79 Client Address: 192.168.105.79:50774 User Name: HHS\H6-08$ Session ID: 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF Status: Insufficient server resources exist to complete the request. (0xC0000205) Guidance: You should expect this error when attempting to connect to shares using incorrect credentials. This error does not always indicate a problem with authorization, but mainly authentication. It is more common with non-Windows clients. This error can occur when using incorrect usernames and passwords with NTLM, mismatched LmCompatibility settings between client and server, duplicate Kerberos service principal names, incorrect Kerberos ticket-granting service tickets, or Guest accounts without Guest access enabled

and

SMB Server event ID 1020
File system operation has taken longer than expected.

Client Name: \\192.168.105.97
Client Address: 192.168.105.97:49571
User Name: HHS\12J.Champion
Session ID: 0x2C07B40004A5
Share Name: \\*\Subjects
File Name:
Command: 5
Duration (in milliseconds): 176784
Warning Threshold (in milliseconds): 120000

Guidance:

The underlying file system has taken too long to respond to an operation. This typically indicates a problem with the storage and not SMB.

I have checked the underlying disk/iscsi/network hyper-v cluster for any other errors or issues, but as far as I can tell everything is fine.

Is it possible that something else is left over from the NOD antivirus installation?

Looking for suggestions on how to troubleshoot this further.

Thanks

Install windows 2012 on IBM server x3550

Hi all,

I want to install my windows server 2012 on a IBM server (model x3550). On the server is already installed Linux protected with user and password (but I have forgot these), so when I try to run my windows server the system goes again to ask me user and password to enter inside linux and I am not able to install it (same thing happens when I try to access on Bios from the server itself)...

Can anyone help me.

DFSR problem, need to start from scratch

Hi,

we have a backup server running Windows 2008 R2 that runs DFSR.

We have 4 branch servers also running Windows 2008R2 that are running DFSR and setup to replicate folders to the backup server.

We experienced a disk corruption on the backup server and we cannot access the DFSR replicated folders anymore. I have tried to run a chkdsk but i still cannot access the folders.

Server is filled with errors:

The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume DATA.

Application popup: Windows - Corrupt File : Exception Processing Message 0xc0000102 Parameters 0x000007FEFD25718C 0x000007FEFD25718C 0x000007FEFD25718C 0x000007FEFD25718C

DFSRs (1424) \\.\E:\System Volume Information\DFSR\database_CCFE_CDDD_FECD_C046\dfsr.db: An attempt to write to the file "\\.\E:\System Volume Information\DFSR\database_CCFE_CDDD_FECD_C046\fsr.log" at offset 768512 (0x00000000000bba00) for 5632 (0x00001600) bytes failed after 0 seconds with system error 21 (0x00000015): "The device is not ready. ". The write operation will fail with error -1022 (0xfffffc02). If this error persists then the file may be damaged and may need to be restored from a previous backup.

It looks so bad i am thinking the only solution left is to delete the backup server volume where the replicated DATA resides and recreate it.

How do i handle this on the DFSR side of things? Would that be enough the recreate the volume, and replication will start from scratch or should i delete system folders too, uninstall DFSR and recreate replication groups?

Thanks

VSS and VSSADMIN to "Freeze" NTFS for snapshots

$

Hello.

I am hosting an NTFS volume on a SAN who's vendor does not provide any kind of VSS provider to quiesce a file system priot to a block level volume snapshot.

The volume I would like to snapshot contains about 2000 "data files" which are in various states of change throughout the day and night.

I would like to take snapshots of the SAN volumes for recovery purposes, however since the SAN provider does not offer a VSS provider of agent (similar to the NetApp SnapManger) I was tyring to figure out a way to quiesce the volume prior to the snapshot being taken.

I'm trying to understand if running "vssadmin.exe create shadow /for=F:" just before the snapshot of the volume is taken (The volume I'm snapshotting is F:) will achieve the clean state that I'm looking for?

My process would like a bit like this ...

1. vssadmin.exe create shadow /for=F:

2. Initiate block level snapshot.

3. vssadmin.exe delete shadows /for=F:

Does anyone know if this process result in me getting a clean (All data flushed to disk) snapshot?

Also, are there any other suggestions or experiences people have with this?

Many thanks in advance,
Mitch

Warning when trying to launch application over mapped drive "We can't verify who created this file. Are you sure you want to run this file?"

$

We have 2 load balanced application servers that map drives with programs on them for users from a central server that are giving the warning "We can't verify who created this file. Are you sure you want to run this file?". Basically how it works is a user logs in to one or the other application servers (for example, 10.0.0.1 or 10.0.0.2) and runs a log on script that maps an L:\ drive to the users folder on the central storage server (10.0.0.100). When the user goes to launch the .exe from the L:\ drive it presents that warning.

I've looked around and have seen recommendations that you need to add the site to the local intranet zone for IE, but when I try to add L:\ it tells me that I have entered an invalid sequence. It appears that you can only put network shares in that location, which is not how we're mapping the drive.

Has anyone run in to this before and knows how to resolve it?

Thanks!

Multiple Cluster Resource Names Possible?

$

Scenario:

We have 2003 R2 cluster resource groups that utilize multiple network name's per resource group to support legacy applications (and poor coding).  These must now be moved to a 2008 R2 Failover Cluster.  Is there a way to have only 1 IP address assigned, but have multiple network names to a 2008 R2 Resource Group?  The systems are already configured with the DisableStrictNameChecking and OptionalNames registry keys - but the cluster resource group is where I'm hitting a snag.

Any way to accomplish this?  (Just add several names to the resource group using just the 1 IP)??

Thanks!

Monitoring for DFS

Hello,

I need to monitor my DFS namespace, as by default I am creating one home folder for a user and creating two folder targets for them and configure replication between them. This is done by a script.
But now i have checked that there are many home folder with only one target folder. So I need to pull out the list of home folders with only one target folder.
I also need a monitoring tool for the same.

Thanks

Auditing File and Folder Access Denied Attempts

$

The company I work for wants to be able to review audit logs to see where people have failed to gain access to particular folders or files on a server, that is part of a DFS. I have enabled Auditing Object Access with Failures, and I have added the Everyone group to Auditing on the folder, in which it audits all failures. However, when I review the Security Log to see those failed attempts to access a file, for example, I get a log of a success to the user who attempted to open the file, when in actuality, he failed to open the file because he did not have rights to open it.

What am I doing wrong, or is this how Microsoft has auditing setup?

Hi,

We have a file server running Windows Server 2008 R2 Std SP1 64-Bit, I am looking to see if there is a way that we can monitor a users activity and see what files have recently been accessed by that user.

Can anyone suggest a way we can do this? We are running active directory with 2 DCs.

Regards,

Martin.
