Removing disk from a volume storage space 2012 r2

$

Hi, I've got a issue, here's my situation, i'm using storage space on a windows server 2012 R2 for my backups. Fisrt I had 14 3tb disk in mirror so there was 19tb usable for date. Now I needed more space so I just added 14 more disk and I extended the virtual disk to 38tb. Then when I wnet into windows management -> disk management to extend the partition to use the full 38tb, I got the following error message

Virtual Disk Service error:
The volume cannot be extended because the number of clusters will
exceed the maximum number of clusters supported by the file system

Then I realized that the cluster size where only at 8k, reading on the Web i understood that I couldn't get more then 32tb.

Now I would like to remove all of the 14 disk I just added in the pool and create a new pool with 64Ko cluster size so I wont worry about my next size upgrade.

I'm afraid that even if windows see the added space has a not allocated space, the storage pool is now using the disks. I can't afford to lose any data.

How can I proceed??

I saw procedure on this site but they seem's to be for removing 1 disk... since I have 14 disk fully integrated in my pool I am a bit nervous following a one disk procedure

thank you

Windows Server 2003

I have found article http://whatevernetworks.com/?p=108
And in description of this article is: to found deleted files in auditing directory I have to found event 560.
But I have about 60 000 events.
My file abcd.txt is missing and I have to find who delete it, but I cant click 60 000 times to find it.

Moreover most of that event looks like its objcect open not object deleted.
How to find this particular?

DFS Problem

Hi folks,

I have a problem with my Staging folder under the DFSRPrivate folder. It contains several gigs of data that I would like to clear out. However, both Namespaces and Replication are empty in DFS Management so I can't clear it using a quota limit. All of the files were created in 2008 and 2009 and I don't know their purpose since I was not managing this server in 2008-2009. How can I determine if I can safely delete the contents of the Staging folder? Thanks.

How to completly delete DFSR replication group in Windows 2008 R2?

I just relete a DFSR replication group from DFS management console. Now I need to recreate it but it says the replication group already existed.

So that mean there is still trace of that replication group. How can I delete it completely (but I keep the namespace)?

Intermittent Slow Response time on DFS 2012 and AD 2008 R2 SP1

Hi,

We recently migrated our AD infra from 2003 to 2008 R2 SP1. In the same line we also migrated our file server (10 days ago) from 2003 to 2012. We implement DFS namespace (Domain based) on the File Server and modify our logon script and home folder to access the shares via \\domain.local\dfs.

We have folder redirection configured for my documents onto the DFS. We had this issue 2 times since implementation where all the shares become inaccessible although the file server is up and running. If we try to browse \\domain.local\dfs, it takes approximately 1 or 2 minutes to open or it timeout. When we open the DFS Management console, it takes a long time to display the shared folders in the console.

We restarted the file (DFS) Server, everything continue to work correctly but we had the same issue after 6 days.

Our DFL is 2008 R2 and FFL 2003. AD replication works correctly and we have only one namespace server configured in consistency mode.

Any idea what may be causing this issue?

Thanks.

DFS namespace change to other than domain name

Our customer has internal domain called companyX.local.  DFS has been deployed on W2K12 R2 fileserver. The DCs are 2008 R2.  Shares have been created for domain DFS namespace which are accessed by companyX.local\share. *

Customer is changing company name so wants DFS to represent new company name so needs DFS share to be accessed via CompanyY.local\share. This works via a hosts file but need to implement within DNS to avoid visiting all workstations in organisation which is not possible with current resource.

*Companyx=Our customer current domain name which matches their real name.

*Companyy=Our customer future domain name which will match their future name. But we don't want to change current AD domain name companyx at the moment.

I would appreciate some help in answering the customer query as they are very important to us.

Thank you!

Dears,

I have Windows Server for file server and share folder, I have created some shred folders for our departments, based on their request I put specific names belong to department into share folders those users only has access for the share folder, for some unknown reason some one has deleted all the data inside share folder in the file server, my question is how can I monitor or know who is deleted the information inside share folder because I have more than one user it has access on the share folder, is there any way to know that like log files or any other solutions? thanks in advance..

Thanks.

I recently installed two windows server 2012, one is for DC, one is for File Sharing; it works fine in the beginning.

Lately, it comes a problem, every once a while it is very slow when opening a file on the server from a client PC; but when i restart the file server then  it will be fine again.

DFS Namespace - Standalone / Exclude Targets Outside of the Clients Site

Hey,

I've set up a DFS namespace in standalone mode (Server 2008 R2) due to the DFL. If the namespace is hosted on Server1 in Site1, what should I expect to happen if the 'Exclude Targets Outside of the Clients Site' option is checked and a user from Site2 tried to access \\server1\namespace\folderA?

FolderA has 2 targets, Server1 and Server2.

Thanks for any help.

Is It Possible to Add a Fileserver to a DFS Replication Group Without Connectivity to FSMO Roles Holder DC But Connectivity to Site DC???

$

I apologize in advance for the rambling novella, but I tried to include as many details ahead of time as I could.

I guess like most issues, this one's been evolving for a while, it started out with us trying to add a new member
to a replication group that's on a subnet without connectivity to the FSMO roles holder. I'll try to describe the
layout as best as I can up front.

The AD only has one domain & both the forest & domain are at 2008R2 function level. We've got two sites defined in
Sites & Services, Site A is an off-site datacenter with one associated subnet & Site B with 6 associated subnets, A-F.
The two sites are connected by a WAN link from a cable provider. Subnets E & F at Site B have no connectivity to Site A
across that WAN, only what's available through the front side of the datacenter through the public Internet. The network
engineering group involved refuses to route that WAN traffic to those two subnets & we've got no recourse against that
decision; so I'm trying to find a way to accomplish this without that if possible.

The FSMO roles holder is located at Site A. I know that I can define a Site C, add Subnets E & F to that site, & then
configure an SMTP site link between Sites A & C, but that only handles AD replication, correct? That still wouldn't allow me, for example,
to enumerate DFS namespaces from subnets E & F, or to add a fileserver on either of those subnets as a member to an existing
DFS replication group, right? Also, root scalability is enabled on all the namespace shares.

Is there a way to accomplish both of these things without transferring the FSMO roles from the original DC at Site A to, say,
the bridgehead DC at Site B?

When the infrastructure was originally setup by a former analyst, the topology was much more simple & everything was left
under the Default First Site & no sites/subnets were setup until fairly recently to resolve authentication issues on
Subnets E & F... I bring this up just to say, the FSMO roles holder has held them throughout the build out & addition of
all sorts of systems & I'm honestly not sure what, if anything, the transfer of those roles will break.

I definitely don't claim to be an expert in any of this, I'll be the first to say that I'm a work-in-progress on this AD design stuff,
I'm all for R'ing the FM, but frankly I'm dragging bottom at this point in finding the right FM. I've been digging around
on Google, forums, & TechNet for the past week or so as this has evolved, but no resolution yet.

On VMs & machines on subnets E & F when I go to DFS Management -> Namespace -> Add Namespaces to Display..., none show up
automatically & when I click Show Namespaces, after a few seconds I get "The namespaces on DOMAIN cannot be enumerated. The
specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted". If I run a dfsutil /pktinfo, nothing shows except \sysvol
but I can access the domain-based DFS shares through Windows Explorer with the UNC path \\DOMAIN-FQDN\Share-Name then when
I run a dfsutil /pktinfo it shows all the shares that I've accessed so far.

So either I'm doing something wrong, or, for some random large, multinational company, every sunbet & fileserver one wants
to add to a DFS Namespace has to be able to contact the FSMO roles holder? Or, are those ADs broken down with a child domain
for each Site & a FSMO roles holder for that child domain is located in each site?

Server 2012 - iSCSI Virtual Disks Missing After Reboot

$

Hi guys.  I recently had to reboot my Windows 2012 Storage Server.  When it came up, the physical disks that the iSCSI virtual disks reside on were visible, as were the VHD files, but the targets were gone.  I looked in the File and Storage Services -> iSCSI but it says 'There are no iSCSI virtual disks', even though the VHD files are clearly there.  When I try to import the already existing ones, it gives me an error because that file already exists in the place I want to put it.  These are very large VHD files so moving them to other storage and then re-importing them could take days, if not longer.

The iSCSI targets are still visible under 'View All Targets', but they are no longer associated with their VHD files.  How do I reassociate them?  And why did the list of VHD files in File & Storage Services->iSCSI disappear in the first place!?

Thanks for any help!

In DFS, How to make servers LEAST COST for different subnets.

$

Hello, We setup DFS in our domain (SERVER1) and we replicated the DFS namespace into a server which is also a member of the domain but it is on a DIFFERENT SUBNET (let's call this server SERVER2).
How can I make sure that the SERVER2 DFS redirection should NOT go to SERVER1 unless SERVER2 is down, etc.? or How do we make sure SERVER2 clients don’t go to the wrong site and vice versa WHEN we enable DFS on multiple systems?

I have also enable least expensive target selection (site-costing) in DFS but I am not sure if that will work.

Note: SERVER2 is not a Domain Controller
SERVER1 is Server 2008 Standard
SERVER2 is Server 2008 R2 Standard

Please help and Thank you in advance.

Rod

Work Folders Issue

$

We started testing Work Folders for our corporate network. What our IT director is seeking is a seamless synchronization of user redirected folders - similar to offline file sync.

It seems he is dissatisfied with the fact that when we disconnect from the network, the Documents folder is not caching files, as normally would be in a loss of connectivity with the server which hosts the redirected folder. Thus Work Folders does not seem to provide a "offline" functionality for the Documents folder.

He seeks a solution that users will not have to remember, "We need to start using work folder, folder", and drop our files there.

Basically, is there a way we can make files available offline within Documents without resorting back to Offline files, and re-sync when back on the network using Work Folders?

DFSR problem, need to start from scratch

Hi,

we have a backup server running Windows 2008 R2 that runs DFSR.

We have 4 branch servers also running Windows 2008R2 that are running DFSR and setup to replicate folders to the backup server.

We experienced a disk corruption on the backup server and we cannot access the DFSR replicated folders anymore. I have tried to run a chkdsk but i still cannot access the folders.

Server is filled with errors:

The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume DATA.

Application popup: Windows - Corrupt File : Exception Processing Message 0xc0000102 Parameters 0x000007FEFD25718C 0x000007FEFD25718C 0x000007FEFD25718C 0x000007FEFD25718C

DFSRs (1424) \\.\E:\System Volume Information\DFSR\database_CCFE_CDDD_FECD_C046\dfsr.db: An attempt to write to the file "\\.\E:\System Volume Information\DFSR\database_CCFE_CDDD_FECD_C046\fsr.log" at offset 768512 (0x00000000000bba00) for 5632 (0x00001600) bytes failed after 0 seconds with system error 21 (0x00000015): "The device is not ready. ". The write operation will fail with error -1022 (0xfffffc02). If this error persists then the file may be damaged and may need to be restored from a previous backup.

It looks so bad i am thinking the only solution left is to delete the backup server volume where the replicated DATA resides and recreate it.

How do i handle this on the DFSR side of things? Would that be enough the recreate the volume, and replication will start from scratch or should i delete system folders too, uninstall DFSR and recreate replication groups?

Thanks

Storage spaces - SAS vs SATA

I need to deploy a very large (100TB+) file server to support 15-20 video editing workstations, on a very limited budget. Uptime requirements are not high - it'll serve nine-to-five users, so if I need to reboot or shut down for maintenance after 5 PM, nobody will care. Even if it does go down in the middle of the day, it's still not a big deal as long as it is recovered within a reasonable timeframe. Therefore, I'm looking at using a single file server node rather than a cluster, and either Intel JBOD2312S2SP or Supermicro 847E26-RJBOD1 DAS shelves. Using SATA drives, such as Seagate NAS series, or Western Digital Red, as opposed to Seagate Constellation ES or Western Digital RE NL-SAS drives will provide significant cost savings, and if I add an SSD tier, the differences are huge - Intel DC S3500 series are very affordable, while even the cheapest SAS SSDs cost thousands per unit, but the question is, what are the trade-offs? I know I will lose clustering support, but what about MPIO? For example, if I use the Intel JBOD boxes, get eight of them, populate each with 8x4TB SATA HDDs and 4x80GB SATA SSDs, then daisy chain them into two groups of four, and use two dual-port SAS HBAs to connect a cable (from different HBAs) to both ends of each chain, will the resulting configuration use all four SAS ports to access the drives, thus providing shelf and HBA redundancy? An HBA loss will cut off one of the loop ends, while a shelf loss (for instance, dead expander) will break it in the middle - will it gracefully recover with SATA drives, or do I need dual-port SAS drives for that? Are there any other caveats with SATA HDDs and SSDs that I need to be aware of?

Is it possible to restrict user access to files that need read/write permissions?

I am in the process of implementing electronic payments for a company's AP department.  Dynamics GP (Great Plains) needs to create an EFT file that will get sent to the bank.  After it is created, a script is run that sends the TXT file to the bank and then renames the file extension to SNT.  Users are logged on to the Great Plains server and have their own permission group.

Because the file is sending payment instructions, it is essential that users cannot modify or create a file with fraudulent payment instructions to the bank (incorrect bank account info).

With testing, I was able to save the file from GP to a folder where users cannot read it's contents, however the script cannot send the file to the bank without "read access" (it says not files available).

Any ideas for solutions?  For instance, is it possible to make Great Plains and/or the script file "system" so that it can override the user profile's permissions?

I was also looking into the ability to hide the folder/files, but it appears users can choose to view hidden files and folders.

There is no disk in drive or the file system is not supported; C:\Windows of WS03r2 Recovery Console

One of two of my WS'03r2x64 Domain Controllers (DC0) has 23.7 gigabyte of free disk space but that isn't enough for Directory Services to load (0xC000007F)  and I am prompted to run DSRM which won't load the admin's profile; all i can successfully do from DSRM is shutdown.  However, Recover Console does run.  I have used Recovery Console to free up additional space (2gb) but it doesn't help.  From Recovery Console, chkdsk /p reveals: "There is no disk in drive or file system is not supported".    The system disk subsystem is an Intel SATA RAID.  I don't feel comfortable with chkdsk/r as i don't think it's a bad blocks issue and hate to give chkdsk that much freedom.  I'm thinking i should try to rewrite the MBR, however, I'm not sure which way to go that will minimize my risk of "gone beyond return".  Can somebody advise on this please?
