W2K12-R deduplication optimization job stuck at 100% for days

Hello,

I've W2K12-R server (VM, 4 vCPU, 14 GB vRAM) with a 7 TB D: drive, deduplication is enabled for this drive. I use this drive for backing up virtual machines, at the moment 3,6 TB are used. Each night ~2 TB new data is backed up, only the C: drives of VMs, so there is a very high dedup rate, these new 2 TB are usually deduplicated during daytimes.

Capacity                 : 6.64 TB
FreeSpace               : 3.01 TB
UsedSpace              : 3.63 TB
UnoptimizedSize        : 110.74 TB
SavedSpace             : 107.1 TB
SavingsRate             : 96 %

Since a few weeks I've the problem that ThroughputOptimization jobs (all Optimization jobs) do not finish. The job is able to free space but it stays at 100% for days.

Although I've set the DurationHours to 6 or 9 hours, the scheduled job does not end and thus no new Optimization job starts. That leads to a completely filled D drive because the space that gets filled by backup jobs during the night  is not freed during the planned time frame.

Event Log from the start of the job:

I don't see further information about job 39D260C4-32D0-4511-8982-598DA53DB423 in event log. In resource monitor I see that fsdmhost has very little disk activity (600 Bytes/s), but a cpu load of 25% (which is one of the four vCPUs).

I stopped the backups this week and started a manual full Optimization job, which stays at 100% since more than one day now.

Any ideas what to check? Any patch I can apply?

File Server Resource Manager

I am network manager in a school and want to implement quotas for which I have downloaded the File Server Resource Manager and installed it on the network. I have read the bumf that comes with (I know my first mistake!!) it and understand the different quota template types. I am going for the Auto quotes for my templates to apply them down the tree but it is not very clear if you can change individual folders within the main one. We have students who need more space when they study photography for instance and I would have to up their quota but not necessarily the rest of the students in the year (Main) folder.

Server 2012 R2 File Server Stops Responding to SMB Connections

Hi There,

Massive shot in the dark here but I am struggling with a pretty major issue atm.  We have a production file server that is hosted on the following:

Dell MD 3220i -> iSCSI -> Server 2008 R2 Hyper-v Cluster -> Passthrough Disk -> Server 2012 R2 File Server VM

Essentially 3 times now, roughly a month or so apart.  The file server stops accepting connections.  During this time, the server is perfectly accessible through rdp or with a simple ping.  I can browse the files on the server directly but no-one appears to be able to access the shares over SMB.  A reboot of the server fixes the issue.

As per a KB article I removed nod antivirus from the server to rule out a conflicting filter mode driver after the second fault.  Sadly yesterday it happened again.

The only relevant errors in the servers log files are:

SMB Server Event ID 551

SMB Session Authentication Failure Client Name: \\192.168.105.79 Client Address: 192.168.105.79:50774 User Name: HHS\H6-08$ Session ID: 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF Status: Insufficient server resources exist to complete the request. (0xC0000205) Guidance: You should expect this error when attempting to connect to shares using incorrect credentials. This error does not always indicate a problem with authorization, but mainly authentication. It is more common with non-Windows clients. This error can occur when using incorrect usernames and passwords with NTLM, mismatched LmCompatibility settings between client and server, duplicate Kerberos service principal names, incorrect Kerberos ticket-granting service tickets, or Guest accounts without Guest access enabled

and

SMB Server event ID 1020
File system operation has taken longer than expected.

Client Name: \\192.168.105.97
Client Address: 192.168.105.97:49571
User Name: HHS\12J.Champion
Session ID: 0x2C07B40004A5
Share Name: \\*\Subjects
File Name:
Command: 5
Duration (in milliseconds): 176784
Warning Threshold (in milliseconds): 120000

Guidance:

The underlying file system has taken too long to respond to an operation. This typically indicates a problem with the storage and not SMB.

I have checked the underlying disk/iscsi/network hyper-v cluster for any other errors or issues, but as far as I can tell everything is fine.

Is it possible that something else is left over from the NOD antivirus installation?

Looking for suggestions on how to troubleshoot this further.

Thanks

Windows 7 running Foxpro program error

Hi,

I am experiencing a very strange error while running foxpro executable program from a client machine. when I run the executable I get the following error and windows explorer change the current path: working directory and moves one level back.

The exe foxpro program is stored on a shared drive on windows server 2008 r2, and it was working fine all time.

Any idea about this behavior ?

Thank you,

File Corruption During Sync Windows 8.1

$

Hi

I have recently introduced some Windows 8.1 systems into our environment, a Sony laptop and a non branded custom build, both systems are running Windows 8.1 Pro.

Our environment is as follows:

Windows Server 2008 domain
PPTP VPN for laptop users using a Watchguard X515.
Netgear ReadyNAS 2100 for Network Folders.
Folder redirection in place for Documents and Desktop.
Offline files in use. Users have the ability to make shared network files available offline if required.

The first device we had with 8.1 Pro was a Sony laptop for our Marketing Director.  He has manually made a few shared network folders available offline for when he is out of the office and unable to connect to the VPN.

We first noticed an issue a few weeks ago when he came to me telling me that one of his documents were corrupt.  The file was one of the ones he has made available offline.  When he got into the office he ran a manual sync, to put the updates onto our shared drive.  When he next came to open it, the file was corrupt with the following message:

'Excel cannot open the file 'XXXX XXXX.xlsx' because the file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file'.

I ran the file through Excel's file repair, which couldn't fix the problem and I tried a few software packages from the internet which said the file was unrecoverable, to no avail.  We tried to recreate the issue but couldn't so we put it down to a one off.  A few days later, it happened again under the same circumstances.

I put it down to something happening while the laptop was offline, however whilst researching this, the same problem happened on a Windows 8.1 Pro Desktop.  This system never leaves the office, which led to some confusion.

Everywhere I look points to ransomware, however I have run full scans with Sophos and Malwarebytes, and both come back clean, and the issue is only occurring on 8.1 Pro systems, 7 Pro and 8 Pro systems are fine.

The user with the 8.1 Pro desktop created a test spreadsheet for me, and this morning we managed to recreate the problem.  When running a manual sync, the Offline Files comes back with an error, stating that the network copy has been deleted, would you like to copy the local copy or delete it?  When we copy the local copy to the network, and then try to open it, we get the previous error about file corruption.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I will have to roll the systems back to Windows 7 if I cant get it resolved, which would be a shame as the laptop is has a flip screen to turn it into a tablet.

Cheers

Jim

Folder Permissions Scenario Settings in doubts

Hi everyone, I am a newbie to Windows Server, I have some doubts in mind:

1. I think there is no way to restrict an "Administrator" account to access a folder, am I correct? I tried to change the owner, reject administrator full control, but in this case, the administrator can still change the owner to himself, to get permission again.

2. In my company, there is a shared folder from the file server for each employee who has account. Everyone can see the folders of others, add files to them, but cannot go into it and list the contents. How to do this? I tried to remove "read and execute"& "Traverse folder" permission, but this will hide the folder as well.

3. Is it possible to set the folder permission allowing a user to create a file but cannot delete it?

Thanks very much!

Deleted Replicated Folder in DFS Management and Now I cannot take ownership of the files it left behind

Ok so here is what happened. I created a replication group on my Microsoft Storage Server 2012 STD. I added a replication folder last night to test it and it worked fine.  I decided that I didn't want to replicate that one folder so I removed it from the replicated folders tab and added a new replicated folder.

Now here is the issue.  I cannot delete the replicated data in the original replicated folder.  I cannot change the ownership of the files.  When I run the takeown commands I get an access denied.  I've tried logging in as local admin, domain admin, ..etc but nothing works.  Outside of rebooting the server, does anyone have any suggestions?

How to restrict a folder size?

We are migrating our Novell Netware 6 File Server to Windows 2008 R2 SP1.

O problem that we are facing is that in Novell Netware is easy to set a folder size limit, just right click and set it's limit.

How can we do it in Windows 2008 R2?

Thankyou in advance.

Hello everyone.

Thanks for taking a second to read this and hopefully reply. I will start off with the usual "hi my name is matt and im an alcoh.. wait I mean im a complete zero when it comes to Servers. But I know I needed one or two because I have been paying alot of $ to have my websites hosted and I am about to put a database online that consists of several (200+) million records, and the price they quoted to host that was not even in the ballpark of negotiation. So I went on craigslist last weekend and bought a bunch of servers. I know most of them are moving out of the pro league and into the senior classic but I have been told that they will get the job done. Here is what I bought: 1 dell poweredge 600sc 1 dell poweredge 1800 3 dell poweredge 1850's and 1 dell poweredge 2850. along with a storage rack a couple 48 port powerconnect switches and some other boxes with blinking lights that say dell power...something. Soooo Here is my question: I read today that these servers have disk size limits that you cant exceed. and my newest (least old) is the 2850 which im told the 6 disks have a limit of 300GB each X 6 is... (shoes off...2 ..192...) 1.8TB correct?? I have porn collections that almost that big. I would need to purchase roughly 27 of these little 300 gb hard drives before I could even think of transferring any data.

(I havent even hit send yet and I can hear the sighs as your eyes roll back in your head. ) I know im missing some part to this equation.

Oh if it makes any difference I bought a couple of them from a software retailer who went belly up and 2 of the servers came with 25 end user lisc... so 50 total from what I read in one of the books that came with it im supposed to give them to the people i want to have access to the server or something similar. Then another of the 1850's has linux on it and that guy said that those lisc are worthless because its from 2003. So I dont know they are in a file folder if I need them.

One of the servers came with a crate full of books and manuals etc and I have spent 3 days.. gosh its Thursday so that makes it 4 days that I have been doing nothing but reading about dns gateways and trying to figure out why ALL the servers show they are connected to the net until I type anything then they say they "only appeared to be connected" but cant actually reach any web pages" but if I pull the net line then they show offline so I know they are connected. I turned off all the high medium low restrictions entered in every website I could think of as a trusted site but still cant even connect to Microsoft.com or even windows update.  So as I was trying to figure that issue out was when I came across this part about disk size limits. Which makes me wonder if I should keep trying to get these online or set them out by the curb and pay the $1800 per month to have this database through salesforce. Then the websites on top of that but those are pennies compared to the $300 per user per month with 6 users.

I thank you very much for your time and if someone would rather send me an email its caoilman@live.com (I only use it to log into here so I dont care if its posted)

One share on one server is slow

Hello All -

I have a Server 2008 R2 that is a VM. This server has multiple shares.

One share takes about 30-40 seconds to load in Win explorer. The share is to the root of E:\. All other shares work perfectly, including one that is a sub folder on e:\.

I have checked all hardware performance, and all is good. I have also checked the VM infrastructure (San's and ESX servers), and it all checked out.

I also checked for fragmentation, and all is good.

Any ideas?

Hello,

I have a HP DL 380. I want to add one addition 146GB drive to a already built RAID. I shut the server down, added the disk, used HP Smart start disk to add the disk to the array. I then booted the server and I am now trying to extend the partition/volume out.

I know I have done this several times in years past but seem to be having trouble this time.  I keep getting this error? What am I missing?

List Folder Permission (This folder and Subfolder) allows users to see files too???

$

On Domain A (2008R2 functional level) accessing a NetApp filer (configured for ABE), I have granted "Authenticated Users"List folder contents for This Folder and Subfolders .  This works great and allows users to traverse down the directory structure until such time that they are granted perms to view file contents.  I don't like that they can see the directory names but I can live with that.

On Domain B (2008R2 functional level) accessing a NetApp filer (configured for ABE), I have granted "Authenticated Users" the very same  List folder contents forThis Folder and Subfolders  (triple checked) but in this environment the users can see the files with in the various folders as they traverse down the directory structure.  The get access denied if they try to open the files but I don't like that they can see the file names.

Why this disparity and how can I prevent the users from seeing the file contents?

Deduplication Schedule

Hello-

We have data dedup enabled on a volume that contains user profiles. The dedup works great. I get 87% savings. What we are trying to figure out is how the schedule works. We are not concerned about running the optimization during business hours as the box has about 4x the minimum requirements. WHen I click on Dedup Settings>Set Deduplication Schedule we have:

Enable background optimization checked AND

Enable throughput optimization  starting at 5:PM and running for a duration of 3 hours.

How many times does optimization run during those 3 hours? And when the throughput optimization runs is that a full optimization?

We have a Windows 2008 Storage Server that we use as a data server. About 100 folders are shared on our network and we use DFS to collect these shares into manageable shared units.

The network comprises 35 Windows 7 clients and one Vista client and a couple of XP machines. These are on a Windows Active Directory that presently comprises three domain controllers: 2003, 2008 and 2012 R2. The network comprises just one site and one subnet.

This setup has worked fine for many years (we've had an Active Directory domain since 2001).

As soon as I replaced our Windows XP clients with the Windows 7 clients I have been seeing some strange network issues.

The most bizarre, and the most unwelcome is that when staff try to create new folders or rename existing ones they will sometimes not be allowed to. The problem is intermittent and I have no idea what may be causing it.

The folder rename issue was encountered when we still used XP but I fixed that by disabling the caching of thumbnails. The error message that appears states the folder is in use. I have used Computer Management on the storage server and looked at Shared Folders > Open Files and have determined that no files were open when this issue occurred.

When staff are unable to create a new folder they see the following message:

Create New Folder message

I have tried various things to troubleshoot this with the help of a TechNet Community Support person in the Windows 7 forums here.

To summarise we have tried using Process Monitor to capture the events and I am quite happy to upload this if anyone would like to see it.

We tried the registry edits detailed in this MS article.

I have created a dedicated firewall rule that allows all traffic on TCP ports 137, 138, 139 and 445.

Another respondent suggested checking out Slow-Link mode but this has not been triggered.

Does anyone have any ideas what may be causing this, please? The network worked like a dream before the Windows 7 clients were introduced, when XP was used.

Thanks!
