I have a server 2008 machine which C partition size exceeds the actual disk size of the disk it is located on, what would cause this? can this cause additional issues? and is there a fix other than shrinking the partition?

Protect DLL Files from being deleted or unregistered

I am looking for a way to protect a DLL file from being deleted or unregistered.

My users have an application that uses the same DLL files as another application. This is in a test environment, so when they are uninstalled they step on each other by deleting or un-registering the DLLs.

Any ideas?

network shares not visible; server/domain not visible'

I'm pretty unfamiliar with the windows networking paradigm but have to do some changes on a win2003 server.  I am trying to a folder on a server with hp thin clients connected via terminal services.

The domain name is techna-school; local network uses dhcp.  Server name is school-server, and full name is listed as school-server.techna-school

net-view school-server shows the shared folder as type "Disk"

explorer with "\\school-server" in the address bar shows the folder also.

ping \\school-server won't resolve, nor will ping \\school-server.techna-school

The folder does not show up on the clients, yet another folder set up a long time ago does.

The thin clients logins are managed via group policy, and security for the shared folder has a single group given all permissions (the group to which the client logins belong.

Thoughts / hints?

Thanks for any clues.

Copying shares with robocopy

I have been using robocopy to migrate all data on an old file server to the new file server. I have been using the following switches:

robocopy \\oldserver\fileshare \\newserver\fileshare /E /ZB /DCOPY:T /COPYALL /R:1 /W:1 /V /TEE /LOG:Robocopy.log

These shares include home drives. I am only moving users to their home drives on the new server one department at a time, or one OU at a time. I'm worried about the following:

User1 is in Accounting OU.

User2 is in Management OU.

They both have home folders. Robocopy has copied all data from old to new. Monday night I select all the users in Accounting OU in AD and redirect their home drives to the new server.

User 1 modifies a file - Document1.txt. This is save in her home drive on the new server.

Tuesday night I am moving the users from Management OU over to their home drive on the new server. So, I run robocopy again to copy any new files to the new server that User2 may have saved on their home drive.

I'm not sure what will happen to User1's Document1.txt. Will robocopy recognize that the timestamp on Document1.txt on the new server has changed and is newer than the Document1.txt file on the old server and not copy it? Or will it replace Document1.txt with the old version from the old server?

What is the best way to accomplish this?

W2K12-R deduplication optimization job stuck at 100% for days

Hello,

I've W2K12-R server (VM, 4 vCPU, 14 GB vRAM) with a 7 TB D: drive, deduplication is enabled for this drive. I use this drive for backing up virtual machines, at the moment 3,6 TB are used. Each night ~2 TB new data is backed up, only the C: drives of VMs, so there is a very high dedup rate, these new 2 TB are usually deduplicated during daytimes.

Capacity                 : 6.64 TB
FreeSpace               : 3.01 TB
UsedSpace              : 3.63 TB
UnoptimizedSize        : 110.74 TB
SavedSpace             : 107.1 TB
SavingsRate             : 96 %

Since a few weeks I've the problem that ThroughputOptimization jobs (all Optimization jobs) do not finish. The job is able to free space but it stays at 100% for days.

Although I've set the DurationHours to 6 or 9 hours, the scheduled job does not end and thus no new Optimization job starts. That leads to a completely filled D drive because the space that gets filled by backup jobs during the night  is not freed during the planned time frame.

Event Log from the start of the job:

I don't see further information about job 39D260C4-32D0-4511-8982-598DA53DB423 in event log. In resource monitor I see that fsdmhost has very little disk activity (600 Bytes/s), but a cpu load of 25% (which is one of the four vCPUs).

I stopped the backups this week and started a manual full Optimization job, which stays at 100% since more than one day now.

Any ideas what to check? Any patch I can apply?

Write-Back Cache in Scale-Out File Server

$

My test environment setup consists of one Hyper-V server and a two-node Scale-Out File Server.  All have Windows Server 2012 R2 installed with the latest updates as of today.

My question is about Server 2012 R2's Write-Back Cache configured on disks created on the SOFS.  Is there any way to monitor the Write-Back Cache?  Or put another way, how can I tell how effective the current size (i.e. 5 GB) of the Write-Back Cache is?  How can I tell if I need more cache or that less could be used?

I'm thinking my Write-Back Cache for a virtual disk on my SOFS quickly becomes full, which is causing the file copy process (to a VM's VHDX running on that virtual disk) to look like hills and valleys--bursts of fast copy speeds interspaced with bursts of slow copy speeds.

Thanks!

DFSR replication, RDC algorithm and the Revit file type .rvt

$

I have a client who has 2 remote offices, that both use the Revit application for day to day work (http://www.autodesk.com/products/revit-family/overview).  The file types that Revit creates are .rvt files.  My understanding is that each .rvt file is a single file relational database.  These files can get very large (as large as 500 MB) and the client has to use their existing WAN link to transfer these files.  I was thinking about setting up a second file server at the remote site and implementing DFS, so that only changes to the files would be replicated (using the RDC algorithm).

My question is: would the RDC algorithm actually work for the .rvt files?  I'm concerned that the RDC algorithm would not create any replication savings with a file that is essentially an "all in one relational database".  Does anybody have any thoughts on this?

Suggestions for IOMeter tests

$

I'm looking for any suggestions on tests to perform using IOMeter (version 1.1.0, if that matters) that best represent a Server 2012 Hyper-V workload.

Put another way, I'm not sure what values to select for things like # of Outstanding I/O's; Transfer size; sequential vs. random; and read vs. write that represents a typical Hyper-V workload.  Also, are there any other settings I'm missing?

Thanks

tool, utility, hack to limit folder and file path lenght?

$

Hello,

I have been fighting to get some kind of control over a couple of file servers that I have recently inherited.

In a nutshell: I have hundreds of thousands of folders that are nested so deep that it makes pretty much any file reach the 256 limit very quickly.

I'm looking for a way to "lock down" the server and refuse the creation of files or folders beyond say a 220 path.

Can this be done?

About File Name Issue by Robocopy

Please kindly help as follows:

Due to I need to migrate the Data from Novell to Windows 2008 R2, I have some issue about robocopy.

My existing file include some long file / folder name and long file path. (More than 256 / 260 characters)

When I try to use robocopy copy the files, some of them show error and mentioned that it cannot locate the files. All of them are long file name.

I have tried to use "/256" and result is negative.

Meanwhile, I do not want to shorten the file / folder name or path.

If I would like to retain the same file / folder name and path, any suggestion?

Thank you!

File Server Resource Manager

I am network manager in a school and want to implement quotas for which I have downloaded the File Server Resource Manager and installed it on the network. I have read the bumf that comes with (I know my first mistake!!) it and understand the different quota template types. I am going for the Auto quotes for my templates to apply them down the tree but it is not very clear if you can change individual folders within the main one. We have students who need more space when they study photography for instance and I would have to up their quota but not necessarily the rest of the students in the year (Main) folder.

Work Folders: limitations and sync process

$

Hi,

Is there any information on the limitations (if any) of Work Folders in Server 2012R2 with regards to File Size, Illegal Characters in File/Folder names, number of files, ...?

I'm doing a comparison with Onedrive for Business which has a dedicated page about their limitations: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/office365-sharepoint-online-enterprise-help/sharepoint-online-software-boundaries-and-limits-HA102694293.aspx

In particular, I would like to find out if Work Folders have similar limitations for

- Maximum File Size: is it 2GB like in OneDrive for Business or 'unlimited'

- Illegal characters in the file/folder names? e.g., # and % are legal file characters, but illegal for OneDrive for Business.

- Number of files? (20,000 in OneDrive for Business (!?))

Furthermore, is there any public technical information on the sync process itself. In particular, does delta sync occurs (i.e., copy only the part of the file that has changed), or is the entire file always copied again after a change? What happens if a user gets disconnected during a sync: will afterwards the sync restart by copying the entire file or only the 'missing' part?

Kind regards,

Access denied on network share for Domain Admin user w/ Full Control

$

0

Hi all, I'm experiencing very strange behavior with share/NTFS permissions. My account (let's call it "Corbin Dallas") is a member of the Domain Admins group and is getting access denied when trying to open a file on a network share locally. The NTFS permissions on the share are configured for Full Control for Domain Admins. This is how I (Corbin Dallas account) created and configured the share:

\\server\TestShare$

Share Permissions:

  • Authenticated Users - Full Control

NTFS Permissions:

  • Configure folder to not inherit permissions and remove all existing permissions.
  • Add Domain Admins with Full Control - This Folder, Subfolders, and Files.
  • Add System account with Full Control - This Folder, Subfolders, and Files.
  • Add Local Administrators group on server with Full Control - This Folder, Subfolders, and Files.
  • Owner Rights with Modify - This Folder, Subfolders, and Files.
  • Test User with Modify - This Folder, Subfolders, and Files.

Note that I have not explicitly assigned my Corbin Dallas account any permissions, but should still receive access as it is a member of the Domain Admins group which has Full Control.

So the problem itself comes about when I do the following: I log into a Windows 7 computer as "Test User" (which only has Domain Users membership) and access \\server\TestShare$ and create a .txt document in the root of the folder and log off the computer.

Then on the server hosting the TestShare$, I log in locally as my Corbin Dallas account and attempt to go into the TestShare folder and try to open the .txt document that "Test User" created but I'm given an access denied which doesn't make sense since the Corbin Dallas account is a member of the Domain Admins group which has NTFS Full Control permissions to it. What's even stranger, is that if I log into another computer as my Corbin Dallas account and access the share through \\server\TestShare$ and try to open the .txt document, it opens fine without any access denied prompts.

So basically, I'm only denied access when I attempt to open the file locally on the server. What have I configured wrong? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

All files on my DFS disappeared!

I setup a DFS to hold my RedirectedFolders last week, in order to add an additional safeguard against a failing harddrive.

Moments ago, all of my files disappeared from my redirected Desktop... and My Documents, and worst of all - My Pictures. :(

I just checked the C:\windows\debug folder for the DFS logs, and basically, there's only logs from when I set up the replication, and from 15 minutes ago when all my files started disappearing.

What happened and how can I fix it/prevent it.

FYI, the log entries look like this:
