Hi, is it possible to mount a VHD file on windows server 2008 (not R2)?  I created a VHD on a network share using disk management utility using a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine and I need to mount the VHD on a server with Windows Server 2008.

Any suggestions?

thanks!

Windows 2008 R2 System Volume Information too large

Hello,

My System Volume Information folder on my Win 2008 R2 is over 300GB, total partition size is 3.7 TB. I'm using this partition to store third party backup software files. maybe a 100 files, that is all what this drive has. When I tried to delete some older System Volume Information files, nothing happens. I do not get permission denied or anything!! How can I reduce the size of this folder? Shadow copies is disabled on all partitions.

Moving file and folders to mountpoint

Hello Forum, I need some help around a small project that I am involved with. For the sake of simplicity, I will use only one server as an example - this will give me conceptual understanding on how to proceed with the rest.

I have one Windows 2008 R2 server with file services installed, the server acts as file and folder server. It is in virtual environment with 5 virtual disks attached to it. One of the disks which is mounted as J:\ is running out of disk space and so I thought of adding one more disk to the server, mount it on J:\ and move files and folders. The folder I will be moving is J:\data\groups\repository.

I understand that one cannot mount a filled folder, in other words it has to be empty. I have thought of a plan wherein I need inputs.

A. Stop sharing J:\data\groups\repository
B. Rename J:\data\groups\repository to J:\data\groups\repository_old
C. Create a folder J:\data\groups\repository
D. Add another virtual disk to the server
E. Mount the disk as folder using diskpart, exmaple diskpart assign=J:\data\groups\repository
F. Use Robocopy to move files and folders from J:\data\groups\repository_old to J:\data\groups\repository
G. Start sharing J:\data\groups\repository

I need help with step 5 and 6. Questions are:

Q. Is the diskpart command correct?
Q. How can I estimate the time it will take to move files and folders from old to new location?
Q. How can I preserve access rights and permissions on files and folders?
Q. Should I backup ACL from old folder and then restore to new?

DFS root browsable in \\domain\ other DFS roots require FQDN i.e. \\domain.local\

Using "contoso" as a substitute for the real name.....

I managed to set up a DFS root of the form \\contoso\users that is showing up like any share would in windows explorer when I browse\\contoso\ and I can happily use it for my folder redirection e.g.\\contoso\users\grebel

However...  I corrected a minor issue with it.

I had set it up on a DC and included the DC as namespace server when the DFS root only had a single, unclustered destination (\\files01\users). I added\\files-01 as the namespace server and removed the DCas a namespace server.  I have then tried setting up more DFS shares with the same characteristics.

I am now setting up DFS shares directly from the 2012 R2 file server (files-01) that hosts them rather than the 2008 R1 domain controller I used for DFS configuration last time.  All shares are domainv2 without access-based-enumeration and with identical security on shares (everyone=full) and directories (default security).

All the subsequent shares are visible only in \\contoso.local\ and not in \\contoso\ the file server that hosts them all is\\files01 in the Contoso domain.

I cannot find any difference whatsoever between the DFS roots \\contoso\users and \\contoso\software or the configuration of their shares, files, etc.

But the icon for "software" is only visible in \\contoso.local\ and \\files01\

The icon for "users" is visible   in \\contoso\, \\contoso.local\ and \\files01\

\\contoso\software works the same as \\contoso\users but is simply not browsable via \\contoso\ in windows explorer.

Do you a solution or have any pointers on how I make "software" visible in\\contoso\ ?  I can't find any clear documentation on the relationship between browsing and dfsn roots, sysvol, etc.

What characteristic controls whether a DFSroot is browsable in the \\domain\ as well as the \\FQDN\ ?  I assume it has to be DFSN, but can't find that change I need to make.

Thanks in advance....

Server 2012 Search indexing and junction points (de-dup) files

Hi,

Currently Win2012 does not support indexing files which are de-duplicated (has a junction point) by the search service.

Does anyone know if this will be fixed at some point?

Do Win2012 R2 has the same bug?

Scanner scans for network location: \\ server1 \ scanner \ test \

client computers have shortcut to this network location, only if there is scanned and it is now at this location is not. see the client computer scanned file
Only when you open a previously scanned file that is visible on the client computer, and then allowed to manually refresh the folder (f5) are the newly scanned files will be visible.
What to do about against this problem?

Maybe is this the solution:

Minimum NTFS permission required to encrypt on remote server

$

As stated in the title...

What are the minimum required NTFS permissions on a shared folder on a server to allow a user from a remote PC to encrypt files in that folder?

Full or Modify?

We had a cryptlocker incident recently and while the infected PC I think tried to encrypt the files on the server it couldn't. Our users do not have admin rights on their PCs and could only have "Modify" as their highest possible permission on any server share.

I've found conflicting articles one stating you n "Modify" but another article stating the reason you got "Access Denied" was that you needed "Full Control"

I intend to test but to save time I thought I'd ask.

Thanks

I'm replicating between two servers in two sites (Server A - Server 2012 R2 STD, Server B - Server 2008 R2) over a VPN (Sonicwall Firewall).  Though the initial replication seems to be happening it is very slow (the folder in question is less than 3GB).  I'm seeing these in the event viewer every few minutes:

The DFS Replication service is stopping communication with partner PPIFTC for replication group FTC due to an error. The service will retry the connection periodically.

Additional Information:

Error: 1726 (The remote procedure call failed.)

and then....

The DFS Replication service successfully established an inbound connection with partner PPIFTC for replication group FTC.

I've done a lot of research on the Internet and most of it is pointing to the same stuff I've tried.  Does anyone have any other suggestions?  Maybe I need to look somewhere else on the server side or firewall side?

I tried replicating from a 2012 R2 server to another 2012 server and am getting the same events in the event log so maybe it's not a server issue.

Some other things I'm wondering:

-Could it be the speed of the NICs?  Server A is a 2012 Server that has Hyper-V installed.  NIC teaming was initially setup and since Hyper-V is installed the NIC is a "vEthernet (Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver Virtual Switch) running at a speed of 10.0Gbps whereas Server B is running a single NIC at 1.0Gbps

-Could occasional ping timeout's cause the issue?  From time to time I get a timeout but it's not as often as the events I'm seeing.  I'm getting 53ms pings.  The folder is only 3 GB so it shouldn't take that long to replicate but it's been days.  The schedule I have set for replication is mostly all day except for our backup times which start at 11pm-5am.  Throughout the rest of the time I have it set anywhere from 4Mbps to 64 Kbps.  Server A is on a 5mb circuit and Server B is on a 10mb circuit.

User with admin rights can't access files through the command prompt

I have a strange situation where I have 2 users both setup exactly the same with admin rights on a 2003 (32 bit) server through an AD group membership, but one can do everything as expected but the other can't.

The one that can't is trying to execute a program is a command prompt and keeps getting access denied or invalid directory when trying to cd into the folder.   I double and tripled check the permissions and they are correct, this person should have full admin.  In fact I did a effective permissions through explorer and it states full rights.  Along those lines this person can also access the folder in question through explorer just not a command prompt.

Has anyone seen this before ? and if so what can be done about it.

Thanks

FSRM, SMI-S, and iSCSI problems error code 2147749892

I had a problem with creating and/or importing VHDX files to iSCSI Target server.  While using Server Manager in the iSCSI wizard to create the target, the wizard would fail the following when trying to create the VHDX file.

WS-management service cannot process the request the wmi service or the wmi provider returned an unknown error 0x80041004

While looking through the events in WMI-Activity, I would see the following errors generated, even when I ran the wizard on the local host server:

Id = {B7CD9665-F333-0001-2C99-CDB733F3CF01}; ClientMachine = XXXXX; User = XXXXX\Administrator; ClientProcessId = 680; Component = Unknown; Operation = Start IWbemServices::ExecMethod - root\wmi : WT_Disk::ImportWTDisk; ResultCode = 0x80041004; PossibleCause = Unknown

or

Id = {B7CD9665-F333-0002-7497-CDB733F3CF01}; ClientMachine = XXXXX; User = XXXXX\Administrator; ClientProcessId = 452; Component = Unknown; Operation = Start IWbemServices::ExecMethod - root\wmi : WT_Disk::CreateVhdWTDisk; ResultCode = 0x80041004; PossibleCause = Unknown

Within Server Manager, the event reported would be:

The Microsoft iSCSI Target Server service could not create the virtual disk using device V:\iscsivirtualdisks\testvhd.vhdx. The operation failed with error code 2147749892.

I could not create or import any VHDX files using the wizard at all.  I had no problems creating them using DISKPART or even through using the Disk Management.

To attempt to resolve the issue, I removed the following patches:

KB2995388
KB3000061

I then proceeded to remove the following Roles:

File Server Resource Manager (FSRM)
Windows Standard-Based Storage Management (SMI-S)

I re-applied KB2995388 and did "not" install KB3000061, and now the wizard works perfectly and there are no more errors generated in WMI-Activity.  Something either with those roles or in KB3000061 is causing a problem with WT_Disk::CreateVhdWTDisk and WT_Disk::ImportWTDisk...

I worked on this for two days to try to get it back online (which it is now), and am quite afraid to try re-adding KB3000061 or those other roles again until I know for certain what the cause is.

any insight would be really helpful!

Redirected Profiles and Offline Files Alternative

$

We've been using redirected files for our documents and desktop folders. The built-in offline files feature of Windows 7 is not the most reliable. People have to remember to manually sync their files before they leave and when they return. Sometimes their status appears as offline when they are in the office. Right clicking on the green Sync Center icon and choosing 'Sync All' usually does nothing. Users have to highlight the contents of their documents folder, right click, and choose sync selected files. Then, the icon will spin and sync. This technology has been around for over a decade, yet it does not always run automatically in the background when it should. Some users see the icon spin when they log into the computer, but who is really watching for this?

How are you handling this feature of Windows? Are you using a third party sync tool instead? Is there a setting we should change?

Request: Make Microsoft Offline File Sync work closer to OneDrive Sync

The Offline File sync that runs in the background has no good feedback mechanism when it's not running or a particular file isn't synchronized. I'd like to request that it function and display icons like OneDrive does. It also appears that OneDrive determines whether or not a file needs synchronized based in a hash of the file rather than the date modified. That process also works better.

DFS error

hello,

I currently configures the DFS share between two servers.
explanation:
- 1 Domain
- 2 servers (There are each at a remote site connected via VPN) (PDC1, PDC2)

So I set up the DFS:
First test:
- PDC1 a test folder on the C: drive
- PDC2 a test folder on the C: drive

This sharing files instantly (ok)
__________________________________

Second test (and the part I need):
- PDC1 a test folder on drive E:
- PDC2 a test folder on drive E:

Sharing does not work

And this with the same configuration for DFS in the same replication group.
The servers are domain controller, and drive E is a second hard drive or are store "data"

Do not hesitate to ask me for clarification, I'm blocking.

thank you

looking for a way to centralize game updating

hello,

i'm currently running a network composed of 6 six computers and 1 server

the server is running windows server 2008 R2, it's a domain controller and I've also got xampp installed on it for two web sites (xibo and another).

the 6 six computers are all linked to the domain and they each auto log in to their own account (pc1, pc2, pc3,...)

on these computers are installed games that need to download update some even have weekly updates, if all of the computer download their own updates it kills the internet speed.

so what i'm looking to do is to centralize the updates on to one computer what would be the server I've installed the games on the server and the other computers

all i need now is a system, script, service, synchronize, proxy, role or any other way to update the games files on the other computers
i would rather that this is done when the computers start up

I've already tried launching the games from a network drive on the other computers but i can't launch them multiple times

another thing that i would like is that they only update the files (copy whats needed) that way it will take less time to do and to limit the use of the network

any solution are welcomed

if this is in the wrong section please just say
i was also not sure weather to put it in this section or this one

Branch Cache Deployment

Hi Techies,

I need to deploy a Branch Cache Solution for one of the client’s remote office. Users in the remote office need to access 3 files shares from two different locations (parent or main office). Below are the complete setup details:-

1. Branch Office:-

a) Number of Users: 50

b) Local Servers: Yes (Domain Controller and File Server)

c) Client Operating System:Windows 7 Enterprise

d) Local File Server O.S (For Branch Cache):Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard x64

e) Clustered: NO

2. Main Office 1:-

a) File Server O.S(For Content server):Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard x64

b) Clustered: NO

3. Main Office 2:

a) File Server O.S (For Content Server):-Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise x64

b) Clustered: YES

4.Network Bandwidth: The branch office is connected to the main offices through4 MBPS MPLS cloud link.

Based on the above environment, I need to deploy a Branch Cache solution and have few questions below:-

1. Can I have partner servers with different Operating systems (Server on remote site is 2012 R2 and Content Servers on Main offices are 2008 R2 both Standard and Enterprise respectively)

2. Is Branch Cache service Cluster aware as one of the above main office server is clustered for File services.

3. I know the recommendation for 50 clients is distributed cache model, but I do have a local File server in remote location. providing this which one is the best solution and effective one?

[Forum FAQ] Reduce the size of System Volume Information folder

$

0

Symptom

There is a folder called System Volume Information in the root of each drive. (Figure 1)

Sometimes, you may find the size of System Volume Information folder is too large. However,it is not recommended to delete the files in it casually sincethe System Volume information folder iscreated by the Operating System and used by Windows for storing critical information related to the system configuration.

Figure 1.

Note:The System Volume Information folderis a hidden system folder on each drive by default, you can show the hidden files and folders before accessing it.

Cause

In general, the System Volume Information folder containsSystem Restore points, Distributed Link Tracking Service databases, Content Indexing Service databases, WinFS databases and information used by the Volume Snapshot Service.

If you enable shadow copies on a volume, more and more VSS snapshots will be created in the "System Volume Information" folder. Then the size of this folder will become too large.

Solution

You can follow the steps below to free up the space of System Volume Information folder safely:

1. Delete the GUIDs files in System Volume Information folder using DiskShadow.exe.

1) Open a command prompt with administrator privilege, then type “DiskShadow.exe” at the command prompt.

2) Type “Delete shadows OLDEST <BackupStorageLocation>at the command prompt.

3) Type “Exit” to exit DiskShadow.exe.

Move file in same NTFS volume inherit destination permissions

When moving a file in the same NTFS volume on Server 2008 R2 the file permissions are the original one.

What I want is the file when moved to inherit the destination permissions. And I read here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310316 that it might be possible if I create a registry key MoveSecurityAttributes. But I created the key, the user logs of and on and when moving a file on same volume the original file permissions are in place, instead of the destination.

Is the KB obsolete? I tested this with Server 2008 R2 and 2012 to no success. Is there other registry keys in this versions of Windows ?

How can I have the destination inherited permissions when I move a file in same NTFS volume ?

Shadow Copy restore

Trying to restore shadow copies of files that have changed in error.

If on the file server (Windows 2008 r2) you drill down to the file that needs to be restored and right click "Restore previous version" no previous version show up.  However if you right click on the parent directory and right click "Restore previous version" you can then open up a previous version of the directory and copy/open the file from that window.

Is there any reason why you cant just select the file with out having to go via the parent directory?
