DFS Namespace New Folder Issue

$
0
0

Quick Overview Current Setup

2 Windows Server 2012 R2 with DFS and DFS Replication roles/features installed (File01 and File02)

Read and Followed TN Guide http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc732863.aspx

Created Namespace on C:\DFSRoots\Shares, Share permissions: Everyone Full

NameSpace: \\domain\shares, added file02 as secondary namespace server, File02 Override Referral set to "Last Among All Targets"

Here is the issue I am having and not fully understand. I create a new folder under the root \shares, added folder target on both servers. DFS Creates the folder on the network share but has the shortcut icon on the folder.

I cannot open the folder locally or via the namespace, what gives?
Error: c:\dfsroots\shares\foldername is not accessible. The network location cannot be reached.

If I go to the \\namespace\shares\ I see the foldername with the shortcut icon on the folder again. I click on the folder and it keeps looping. What gives again?

Any further insight into this DFS(R) is greatly appreciated as I am confused because the TN article did no help nor did a blog page with step by step information: http://mizitechinfo.wordpress.com/2013/08/21/step-by-step-deploy-dfs-in-windows-server-2012-r2/

Making NTFS permissions read/write without ability to create/delete folders

$

Out at one of our job sites we have a server running Windows Server 2012 R2 that's got a file share accessible to our onsite people. Our project managers have devised a very strict folder structure for this file share, and for auditing purposes they want to stick as close to this structure as possible.

Therefore, although people onsite must have read/write access to create, modify and delete files, they do not want them to be able to create or delete folders. They want them to use the existing folders and not tuck stuff away into folders that no one knows exists except the person who created them.

The closest way I've found to do this is to deselect the advanced permissions 'Create folders / append data' and 'Delete subfolders and files.' This has a few side effects however, the most noticeable being that due to not being able to append data to files, certain files (such as CAD drawings) can't be edited by anyone except the person who created them.

Is there a way using just NTFS permissions to accomplish what the project managers want? And if not, are there any useful third-party utilities that will help us do this?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

DFS Tombstoned deletion

I have a question about tombstone deletion. Exactly what is it and should I be worried that it will delete user folders on either server?

How this came about was that my DFS replication stopped so i  deleted the replication group and then recreated it using a different group name. I just added the same folders on both servers. It was the same setup just a different group name. I then ran a health report and this is what I got.

The DFS Replication service stopped replication on replicated folder Fileserver at local path E:\Fileserver due to Error ID: 9098 (A tombstoned content set deletion has been scheduled). Event ID: 4004

Thank you.

Server 2012 iSCSI issue

I am setting up an iSCSI target for the first time. I have setup my target and created a disk. When I try and point my initiator at the targets IP and select quick connect it says "no targets are available for Login using quick connect" - I have opted to not tick CHAP authentication on the target. I have also noticed that my target status says "not connected" in server manager on my target server. Is this right? Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks

Hello,

I created a SMB share folder from my server to another server. Now I want to create/copy some files from my server to the destination server/client. How can I do that? Only by Remote Desktop?

Can't access anything but offline folders on slow VPN

$

As the title says, some of my users have set up offline folder syncing on Windows 7 laptops because they are out of the office at customer sites pretty frequently and want to have files handy. From time to time they may need to connect back into the network over VPN and access other folders on the file server. The problem we see is that from time to time they will connect, and even though they can see the mapped drive to the file server, all they can access is the folder marked for offline syncing and all other folders or files on that drive are marked with gray Xs. To make this a bit more confusing, other drives that are mapped are fully accessible, only the drive that has any offline folder is not. This does not always happen, but it is frequent enough that it is causing users to complain.

All laptops are Win7 Pro 64bit, the office has a 20MB fiber internet circuit and GbE network, Barracuda X300 Firewall, 2k3 and 2K8 file servers

Even though we don't currently use it, IPv6 is enabled on the clients' VPN connections. Currently use PPTP.

I've looked around a bit and can't really put my finger on anything that seems to resolve the issue. Disabling slow link mode doesn't seem to do anything. Anything else I can try?

Thanks

ReFS and Hardware RAID

Hi there,

Just wanting to confirm if ReFS can be used with a RAID 6 Hardware Controlled system - or must it be used in conjunction with Storage Spaces? I have 3 x 80TB Volumes across a bunch of devices and I'm tossing up between moving to Linux and formatting EXT4 File System, or keeping ReFS if it will work on top of the RAID Controller?

Thanks.

Confusing disk usage numbers

Hi, all.

While in a prosess of moving a large file share I came across a strange issue. I wanted to check the amount of data moved so I checked the properties of the disk I'm moving data to - 1.38TB used, data deduplication shows savings of about 0.6TB so I got about 2TB data moved. Then I check properties of the folder containing data, and there comes surprise - 2TB of data, as expected, but size on disk is just 86 GB :-)

Is this just a bug or there is some logical explanation to those numbers?

File Serving/Shares and vhdx

On a 2012R2 guest OS that is going to be a file server...(low I/O really for our smb)

Should I make one big VHDX attached to the guest to host say 7 shares...

Or should I logically split them up into separate vhdx files, but not 7 different ones as I would like to group them together into say maybe 4.

This is mainly for logical organization and isolation. I was curious to any negative effects from doing it that way.

I mean I wouldn't like a bunch of smaller vhdx files, but I'm not sure if I want one big one either.

I wouldn't mind having the engineering share as it's own vhdx though.

Automated scrubbing and bit rot repair on a mirrored storage space using ReFS

I use several ReFS volumes , either on one-way or two-way mirrored storage spaces under Windows Server 2012R2.

The description of the automated 'scrubbing' on TechNet seems a bit unclear to me. Microsoft explains:

Integrity. ReFS stores data in a way that protects it from many of the common errors that can normally cause data loss. When ReFS is used in conjunction with a mirror space or a parity space, detected corruption—both metadata and user data, when integrity streams are enabled—can be automatically repaired using the alternate copy provided by Storage Spaces. In addition, there are Windows PowerShell cmdlets (Get-FileIntegrity andSet-FileIntegrity) that you can use to manage the integrity and disk scrubbing policies.

And further on:

ReFS can automatically correct corruption on a parity space when integrity streams are enabled to detect corrupt data and because ReFS examines the second (and third) copies that the data parity spaces contain. ReFS then uses the correct version to correct the corruption.

noteNote
ReFS can already detect corruption on mirrored spaces and automatically repair those corruptions.

Does this mean the file attribute "FileIntegrity" has to be set to "on" in order for automatic scrubs (of user data) and automatic correction (of user data) an mirrored spaces to take place--or not?

If the answer is that "FileIntegrity" has to be explicitly set to "on", what happens with new files copied into or created in an existing folder structure for which I set "FileIntegrity" to on? Do I see it correctly that "FileIntegrity" is off for new files by default?

So do I have to run a PowerShell command like

PS C:\> Get-Item-Path 'H:\Temp\*' | Set-FileIntegrity-Enable $True

(source)

every time a new file might have been copied into the folder structure of "H:\Temp\" in order to activate automatic scrubbing and repairing forall files in this folder?

Thanks for your comments.

The Backup runs succesfully however, as does any backup that i run with Backup Exec 2010 on the same server (running these backups also causes these same errors in the Event Log).

The only oher fix i found out in the wild that even remotely gets near these errors is this one:

I tried this but it simply stopped the backups from working at all.

Any ideas anyone?

Many thanks all.

How I can do this movement? Is there any dependency with AD site for Windows 2008 DFS

Data deduplication scrubbing job stuck on 30% for 6 days

Hi everyone

I have a LUN which has been stuck on "scrubbing" for around 6 days. It won't progress any further. I've run a scan disk and it doesn't report any errors. The second LUN on the box is running fine as well.

The logs under application and service logs -> microsoft -> windows -> deduplication doesn't report any errors.

Any ideas? Is it safe to reboot the machine while it is scrubbing?

BranchCache latency GPO setting

$

I need to know if there is any downside to reducing the minimum latency threshold for BranchCache from 80ms to something like 8ms? (Referring to the GPO setting “Configure BranchCache for network files”)

We have a number of Branch Offices, over a variety of WAN connection speeds and varying WAN latencies. We would like to use BranchCache to reduce the bandwidth utilization on our WAN, and also to speed up access to network files over the WAN.

Almost all of our WAN links have latency figures between 1ms - 35ms on average, hence if we dont configure the GPO setting to something lower then my understanding is that BranchCache caching wouldnt begin because the default minimum is 80ms.

We are planning to use both Distributed Mode and Hosted mode, with Win 2012R2 Servers and Win 8.1 client workstations.

Prevent deletion of files

Hi Windows Expert,

I am creating a share folder for one of my department user. for this share folder, their requirement is some users in this dept will have full access right and some users only have read/write access right. these users can only read/write and they can't delete anything inside the shared folder even in the sub shared folder. How do I configure for this permission? I have tried to remove the modify access, in this case those users can't add or rename those files inside, which is not correct. if I put back the modify rights, then they will be able to delete. FYI, we are using windows server 2008 R2 for the file servers.

thanks for your attention.

Henry

Move file in same NTFS volume inherit destination permissions

$

When moving a file in the same NTFS volume on Server 2008 R2 the file permissions are the original one.

What I want is the file when moved to inherit the destination permissions. And I read here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310316 that it might be possible if I create a registry key MoveSecurityAttributes. But I created the key, the user logs of and on and when moving a file on same volume the original file permissions are in place, instead of the destination.

Is the KB obsolete? I tested this with Server 2008 R2 and 2012 to no success. Is there other registry keys in this versions of Windows ?

How can I have the destination inherited permissions when I move a file in same NTFS volume ?

Ps: I found two similar threads

BUILTIN\Administrators taking up too much Disk space in Disk Quota

Hello Experts.

We have configured K drive of our windows 2008 R2 as file server where in more than 1000 users get connected at a time.We have set the default quota for any user should be 400 MB .Com-min to my question I noticed that BUILTIN\Administrators is consuming some where around 450 GB..i was quite surprised to see that..

Domain admins are part of BuildIn\Administrator and we have 5 domain admins..but domain admins individual disk quota is less than 40 GB..

Is there something which i am missing to find out why built in admin is consuming 450 GB?

User with admin rights can't access files through the command prompt

$

I have a strange situation where I have 2 users both setup exactly the same with admin rights on a 2003 (32 bit) server through an AD group membership, but one can do everything as expected but the other can't.

The one that can't is trying to execute a program is a command prompt and keeps getting access denied or invalid directory when trying to cd into the folder.   I double and tripled check the permissions and they are correct, this person should have full admin.  In fact I did a effective permissions through explorer and it states full rights.  Along those lines this person can also access the folder in question through explorer just not a command prompt.

Has anyone seen this before ? and if so what can be done about it.

Thanks

SAN/NAS vs server attached internal HDDs

Hey Guys,

I am a system admin of a firm, just going through with all the space available on the servers, Just a question came into my mind instead of having a separate storage SAN/NAS, we can also extend the HDD on server to keep the data thier.

So what all can be the harm or drawback of not having SAN/NAS.
