Deduplication and DFS Replication (RDC) over WAN

$

Hello Everyone !

We are running a Windows 2012R2 File Server on site A. The server has deduplication enabled on the share and we do replicate the content of this share to a Windows 2012R2 Server on site B. Both servers are connected via a VPN over WAN.

The constellation is just done to have a offsite backup of the data from site A at site B.

My question is what kind of data will be transferred from site A to site B over the WAN:

  1. quantity as optimized by deduplication + RDC
  2. quantity as deduplication is not running + RDC

RDC is doing compression already to reduce band width but I would like to know if the replication process is able to utilize the optimization done by deduplication additional so the real transferred data volume over the WAN is “compressed” by RDC + deduplication.

Looking forward to some help.

DFS Replication service is unable to access the performance counter

Issue description:

Exactly the same as:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Situation:

Server A B & C

A &B are hubs, C is a spoke
Server A & B = windows 2008 SP2, Server C = windows 2003 R2

After fiddling around today with all three servers I have finally managed t create a nice hub and spoke system. In the future, I will add 12 additional spoke servers.

While running tests from server A (win2k8) the DFS management report started giving me errors that the following performance data was not available:

"The DFS Replication service is unable to access the performance counter  RTD-APPSRV01\DFS Replicated  Folders(ivr\voice-{B9C0BB92-0088-46F4-96E2-66A066D6E3BD})\File Installs  Succeeded on NLRTD-APPSRV01. Performance data is unavailable. Error ID:  0x800007d5."

The error in the diagnostic report says go to http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=300956 and follow the instructions.

I go to the KB article, try to find the perfc009.da_ files on the windows 2008 ISO I have lying around. Not to be found anywhere on the disc :(
So I read another article that says the perfD009.dat file is actually the original copy of the perfC file.

So I copy the perfD file over the perfC file, return the registry performance counters back to 1846 and 1847 (as desribed), reboot but still no avail.

So I figured, let's see what 0x800007d5 actually means...

Turns out that 0x800007d5 means "No data to return" which isn't really helpfull in this case.

I tried the lodctr /R command, nothing

Checked perfmon on both servers and both of them are able to give me the data. So the counters are there!

Finally I tried to see if I could find the GUID somewhere in the registry, but that unfortunately is not the case.

Replication is working, but I really really want the diagnostic reports before I can continue to expand this scenario to 13 spokes and 2 hub servers.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

However the registry permissions did not fix the problem.

I can access the counters fine through perfmon.

The only thing I can see that might be the cause is the servername in the report. It is not correct.

For instance in the example above the reference server isRTD-APPSRV01. Using this example, the report actually only shows the following (first two letters of server name is missing).

"The DFS Replication service is unable to access the performance counter D-APPSRV01\DFS Replicated  Folders(ivr\voice-{B9C0BB92-0088-46F4-96E2-66A066D6E3BD})\File Installs  Succeeded on NLRTD-APPSRV01. Performance data is unavailable. Error ID:  0x800007d5."

Replication is definitely working. Just unable to run a report.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Cannot optimize volume - Receive error "The specified extrinsic Method does not exist"

When I try to optimize a volume on a server running Windows Server 2012 (R1). I receive the below error. This volume is an ISCSI target to our Compellent SAN. Other Servers don't have an issue with volumes created on the same SAN and I have already ran ChkDsk and it returned no errors. Oddly enough I can run a "Defrag T: /D" but a "Defrag T: /O" returns"Incorrect Function. (0x80070001)" (Incidentally an "Optimze-Volume T -Defrag" also works)

Any Ideas? I'm stumped!

Command:

Optimize-Volume -DriveLetter T -Verbose

I am trying to added a share on a Windows Server 2008r2 domain controller. Had one that was working fine. Now it's not working. Trying to re-add the share and i get a error that says "Your system administrator has blocked you from running this program." and then "File not found". After doing some searching it seems to have to do with the Application Information service not running. Try to start it and get the same file not found error. I checked and the appinfo.dll is present in the system 32 folder. There seem to be a lot relating to this with respect to Malware. I don't think this is the issue as the machine up to date anti-virus. I am trying to figure out where to go from here. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Folder visibility

Hello,

I have a 'folder' share on my Windows Server 2008 Standard R2.  Within the shared folder, are several subfolders (each for my users).  NTFS/share permissions are set at the 'shared' folder level with subfolders inheriting the permissions.  However, some of the subfolders are set NOT to inherit permissions and have explicit permissions set on them.

Problem/Issue:

The user folders with explicit permissions (not inheriting) are ONLY visible to Users who have explicit permissions to that folder in Windows Explorer.  This was not the case in Windows Server 2003 because in W2003, all folder within the shared folder are visible regardless of the permissions.

How can I get this behavior to also apply to W2008?

Thank you

Implementing Tiered Storage on Existing Storage Spaces Pool - Server 2012 R2

All,

I have an existing Storage Spaces pool on a Windows Server 2012 R2.  All drives are HDD, and the pool is divided into three volumes (1 mirror, 2 parity).  I am considering adding some SSD's for the performance increase by implementing tiered storage. However, while I have found quite a few guides detailing how to set up tiered Storage Spaces from scratch, I haven't been able to find one that describes how to add tiering to an existing pool.

My questions:

1.  Can you add an SSD tier to an existing Storage Spaces Pool?  If so, how?

2.  Is it destructive to existing data?  I will abandon the plan if it isn't transparent to existing data.

Thanks in advance!

DFS Standards

Hello,

We currently have 7 offices all with fie servers as well as a cofacility.  We are looking to set up DFS between the CO facility and each office file server.  What is the general rule here?

We are thinking of having DFS01 (2012 R2 box) with a fairly large volume to house all the DFS replicas.  Can these all be on the same volume or should we split them up? and if the same volume is OK how do we do an initial clone as a replica cannot already exist on the volume...

on the CO server:

E:\SVR01

E:\SVR02

etc...

Just trying to wrap my head around the structure of it.

Thanks,

Ernst.

Server 2012 storage pool -Lost Communication with drive resulting in no "FrindlyName" or "UniqueID"

Hello, I have run out of ideas, I need help to find a successful solution.

Server 2012 storage pool -Lost Communication with drive resulting in no "FrindlyName" or "UniqueID" for storage pool to work with. (This is a USB 3.0 hdd). I tried to remove the drive in both PS and GUI but no go until I add additional  storage that is greater than the drive in question. So I added a 3TB drive, no change, I think because storage pool cannot access a "FrindlyName" or "UniqueID" it will not start rebuilding the pool and retiring the drive? The OS still sees the drive (by its model #) as active and part of the storage pool. So I cannot "safely remove it" because it is in use.

Has anyone had this problem? How did you solved it?

Thanks in advance.

WinSXS CleanUp Issue

I have a Windows Server 2008R2 SQL Server. All updates to date, and a gigantic WinSXS folder. Bottom line is that I need to clean it up. Ok, but when I run Disk Cleanup WITH ADMINISTRATOR PRIVILEGES I still don't have the Windows Update Clean. I also downloaded the updates from the Microsoft website but they say not required for my machine. What's going on? I heard that an update from august 2014 may remove the Windows Update Cleanup?

What is best method to migrate Users' Offline Files Data from one server to another?

$

0

We use Folder Redirection with offline folders. There are ~200 users whose My Documents is redirected to a server. GPO is in place for the folder redirection part and offline folders are enabled by default. There is no policy setting for offline folders.

The current file server is a Windows Server 2003 system. The new file server would be a Windows Server 2008 R2 system in a different domain than the current one. End users are on Windows 7.

I would like to know the best approach to get this migrated across with little or no impact. Let me know if more details are required.

2012/2012 R2 deduplication questions.

$

Good day to all. I apologize in advance for my bad English.

I am trying to plan deduplication deployment, but I got few questions. WARNING: there is a lot of text down here.

2012.

1. 2012 dedup does NOT process open files at all (yes/no)?

2. If I set 0 days at file "age" poilicy (MinimumFileAgeDays), will the deduplication task (i mean "optimization") wait for opened file to be closed or it will just skip it and will be completed? If the task will wait the file to be closed, will it impact hard to server resources?

2012 R2.

1. 2012 R2 dedup processes opened files only with "Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) server" setting (yes/no)?

2. For example I set up "Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) server" setting and set "age" policy for files (MinimumFileAgeDays) not 0 days (2 day for example). Will opened files be processed by optimization task (I doubt because opened files are "younger" than 2 days)?

Common questions.

1. Why here (article for 2012 only) the VHD Library which contains "Virtual hard disk files" is called a good target for deduplication? May be it is about deployment storage with vm "image", i mean some analogue of vm template in vSphere andnot about VHDs of started vms?

2. "Process files that have a minimum age of five days according to the Last Modified Time. If Last Access Time is enabled on the server (this is not the default setting), deduplication will use the Last Access Time."

Can I target the optimization task to Last Midified Time with enabled Last AccesS Time? I mean it is useful to turn on the Last Access Time for File Management Tasks, but there could be situation like that: file opens often but not modified at all, so it will not be processed by optimization task just because of Last Acess Time updating.

3. Can someone explain me the OptimizeInUseFiles (what is "15 mines") and OptimizePartialFiles (i cant get the meaning of "including portions of files that are old enough, according to the value of the MinimumFileAgeDays parameter") parameters of Set-DedupVolume?

Thanks in advance.

Robocopy command help

Late next week I will be replacing one of our Domain Controllers with a brand new server.  The Domain Controller is also a file share server.  I've been looking at options and it looks like robocopy is the right choice for me (we do not use DFS or else I'd look at using the file migration tool),  I'll be going from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2 Domain Controller.  Does anyone happen to know the options I'd use in the robocopy command to copy over all the folders, subfolders AND file and folder permissions? Do I need to create the shares manually before I issue the command or will it create them for me?  Lastly, ideally I'd like to perform a robocopy over the users lunch hour and then just do a differential copy after everyone goes home to save time. Can I get some assistance with the commands?  I've looked on microsofts page, but the options seem pretty extensive.  Thanks

windows 2008 r2 FTP and network access

I have two multifunctional devices so I setup my FTP server and add two virtual folders.

First multufunctional device have IP 192.168.0.10

and second multifunctional device have IP 192.168.0.11

So in FTP server I have locked virtual folder scanner1 to IP 192.168.0.10

and second virtual folder scanner2 to IP 192.168.0.11

Both folders are also shared folder so users can map that shares on their windows 7 clients and when scan some documents they can have acces to it by mapped disk.

Problem is because I need to lock those shared folders to only users which can access to scanner 2 shared folder.

When I set permission for that folder to only John and Mike and delete Users, multifunctional device can not access that folder scanner2.

So what I need to do, to lock that folder scanner2 to only those two users by network share and multifunctional device still can save scanned files to folder scanner2 via ftp.

I never left an open problem....I search, dig and ask, until it's solved....

Share permissions issue - users reporting files readonly

$

I have setup a share and the users need to have access to read, modify, write, delete on the files/folders in the new share. The users. For this:

1. I added the user AD group to the Share Permissions and set 'Change' for the permissions. I noticed that there was already a group called Everyone here and had 'READ' permissions. I did not make any changes to this Everyone group.

2. I added the user AD group to the NTFS Permissions and set 'Modify, Read&Execute, Read, Write' permissions.

It seems the users are seeing the files as 'read only'. They can view and open, but are not able to edit the file. What might be the issue?

Recover deleted files from mirrored dynamic disks

$

Hi,

I need to recover files and folders that were deleted by robocopy. I was running a backup of existing photos from one server to another server (Windows server 2008) using the robocopy /mir command. The destination folder had an existing folder in it that contained other photos but because this folder was not in the source folder then it was deleted by robopcoy. The destiantion folder is on a software mirrored dynamic disk. I need to recover this destination folder, but have not had any luck. I have avoided writing any more data to the destination drive to prevent data loss. I am also not able to use the previous version option as this is not enabled.

So far I have tried using recuva, photorec and even a paid utility Active @ Uneraser but they cannot perform a straight forward undelete. I have to go to the deep scan method which doesn't recover the original file and path names. Even then I don't think I am getting the files I need back (there are a lot files to sort through) as the creation dates don't match up with the ones I am after.

My real question is, does a dynamic mirrored volume allow undelete? So far it doesn't seem so. Is it possible that these files are completely unrecoverable? Any help would be appreciated.

This warning occurred in several seconds after the Windows Server Backup start. Our backup job finishes successfully. That server is in provisioning without a heavy workload, and we have not experienced any problem yet. But we do not want to face any problems due to this error in the production environment.
All disks of the server are managed by the LSI MegaRAID controller, which doesn’t report any errors in the disk system.

it is Windows Server 2012 with the latest updates.

Mapped Drives using GPO to DFS Referrals no loner available for 2-3 minutes after the computer returns from sleep

Hi

We have a global issue affecting both laptops and desktop computers. When a user returns to the computer after 30 minutes, in which time the computer has entered sleep mode, the user attempts to open one of the mapped drives, they then get the following error.

Location is not available

P:\ refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or your network, and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location.

The user then has to wait 1-3 minutes before the network location is available again.

The drive mappings are assigned via Group Policy preferences which are then mapped to DFS referrals. I have created a manual mapped to a non-DFS referral and a manaully mapped drive to a DFS referral.

Manually mapped non DFS mapping after returning from sleep - Drive available

Manually mapped DFS referral location after returning from sleep - Drive available

GPO mapped drive to DFS referral location after returning from sleep - Not available

I have also tried updating the computer pwer management drives and adjusting power management on the NIC and within the Windows 7 Power management GUI. Of which neither have had any effect.
