FSRM 2008R2 reports big different size with folder properties

$

Hi Everyone,

I'm having this issue and spend huge amount of time to search around but cannot explain why FSRM reports a big diffeent on used space compare to Windows Folder Properties.

As you can see following, Windows reports 513 GB but FSRM says662 GB

Based on my research, the difference is due to Windows block size and small file. Yes, we have around 150.000 small files 2KB, 10KB,20KB, etc. Our default block size on disk is 4KB.

Let say average each small files waste 2KB, the waste space on disk is 150.000 x2KB=300 MB only.

Where is approx 150 GB difference here?

How can we explain this. Can someone please help? Thanks

ps: I'm using Windows 2008R2, 4KB block as mentioned. No compression.

Hello All-

We are getting ready to roll out Work Folders.  It is working all fine on Windows 8.1 devices and am not trying to get it to work on Windows 7 SP1 devices.  The Work Folders client for Win7 installs fine and I can configure it, however, immediately after configuring work folders it displays an error stating that "Sync Stopped.  Can't Encrypt Files."  There is really no other information that I can find on this error.

Any help would be appreciated!!

Server drive dropping out randomly on all clients

$

I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 running with all Windows 7 clients and have been experiencing a connection drop on the shared data drive that lives on the server. The clients all randomly get the "Local device name is already in use" error message. I know that I don't have any drive name or computer name conflicts, yet this is happening randomly to all the clients in my network and it's happening quite often. Couple times an hour maybe to random clients.

I have made some changes recently. The biggest being that I changed the IP address of the server and all the clients, however after that change things seemed to be working well. Then I had a drive fail on the Server RAID. When I replaced the drive and began the rebuild, that's when I noticed connection dropouts. I read elsewhere that when doing a rebuild the server requires a lot of resources and may drop connections, so I did not think much of it. After the rebuild finished this problem persisted.

The server runs a DNS Server and Active Directory. The firewall (default gateway) take care of DHCP. Everything is on a gigabit switch. I have played with the NIC settings on the server to see if it may have been a routing issue. The server primary DNS is our local ISP DNS and the secondary is the loopback DNS. All the clients are configured to have the server IP and the primary DNS and the local ISP DNS as the secondary.

I have had remote sessions running to the server to try and isolate the issue and have not been able to pinpoint what it could be. One thing is that it's not just the mapped drive. The server also drops my remote session when the drive drops out as well. I have not tried to ping it during this period as the dropouts appear to be relatively quick. Usually my remote session will drop and then I can remote back in within 30 seconds or so.

My thoughts are leaning toward DNS server settings as I changed the IP address of the server. I went through most of those settings and have been unable to find anything that stands out. Name Server IP settings are all correct. I did change the auto disconnect setting on the server to -1 so that it does not disconnect any clients. I don't have enough clients that this would cause any resource issues (~8). I never had this issue before the rebuild and I'm not sure what to try next.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Enable access-based enumeration does NOT work

I have ABE problem that it does not hide from others who have no access rights to the shares. I read this article https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/b207cf67-d24b-4a01-b7f0-adb652681f3d/access-based-enumeration-enabled-but-not-hiding-folders?forum=winserverfiles

and someone said it may need to reboot the server to make it work! The link above does not tell if folks get it resolved. What else can be done without reboot the server. Reboot a server after create a share is not an option, anyone knows a better solution? thanks.

Multiple friendly names in storage tiering

Hello everyone,

I recently managed to setup the following:
1 raid1 with 2 ssd drives for the hypervisor
1 raid1 with 2 ssd drives for storage tiering
1 raid5 with 4 hdd drives for storage tiering

I successfully manged to create a storage tiering by create a storage tiering pool and virtual disk with the letter D.
I moved my virtual machine to the D drive.
Now I would like to configure the VHDX file of the virtual machine to be pinned to the SSD part( just for testing purposes ) and later on move it to the HDD part.

If I enter the following powershell cmd:
get-storagetier | select friendlyname
the result is:
Microsoft_HDD_template
Microsoft_SSD_template
Storage tiering_Microsoft_ssd_template
Storage tiering_Microsoft HDD_template

Could someone explain me why there are 4 storage tiers as I only expect to see 1.
I must add that the size of the first 2 mentioned is 0 and the other 2 are the size of my ssd drive and the size of my harddrives.

Furthermore I would like to know how it could be possible to create a 65GB VHDX manually put it on the SSD tier and after running the scheduled optimization task it states completely on tier while the SSD disk in the tier is only 60GB.... I would expect it to say partially on tier... What am I missing.

Many thanks in advance.

Windows Server Backup - Windows Server 2012 - technical details of operation

$

I am looking for  in-depth articles/tech  notes on Windows Server Backup for versions 2008, 2008R2, 2012 and 2012R2 in both HyperV  and non-Hyperv environments.  Please note, I do not want a 'how to do a backup/restore' link/reference.

In particular I am looking for the way daily backups are created/named/folders that are created. In other words when I go onto the backup drive I see all kinds of files and folders with various long alphanumeric string names. I want to know what they are and how they got to be where they are and what is the rationale of the naming structure and what is the relationship of the files I see   to restoring to specific points in time, etc.  I would like to know for instance the role that Volume Shadow Copy plays in the process.  So again I do not want a   "how to do a backup" article link but a behind-the-scenes detail of what happens once a backup is configured and runs.

Here are some specific questions I would like answered.

For instance, when I look at my backup folder on my locally attached  USB drive, I see a folder called Windows Image Backup.

When I look in there I see another folder with the name of the server that I am backing up - Server2012

If I explore that I see the following structure:

Backup2014-1-03 033039 (folder)

Catalog (folder)

Logs (folder)

Sppmetadata Cache (folder)

Mediald (file)

In the Backup2014-1-03 033039 folder I see:

a long list of XML files with long alphanumeric string names all with the same date/time

a backupspecs.xml file - same date and time as above

another long alphanumeric string file with a description that says Hard Disk Image file that is about 500 gig - same date and time as above

In the Catalog folder I see two files Backup Global Catalog and Global Catalog, the backup one day behind the the other which has the date/time as the ones above

In the logs file, I see a long list of Backup_error.... with consecutive dates leading up to the date of the XML files and others I listed earlier. When I look in them they are all blank.

The Sppmetadata Cache (folder) is empt

The mediald file is not one I know how to open

What do all the above folders and files represent? How do they get generated? What is their relationship to each other and to the daily backup?

Other questions I have:

Is there a way to look at the backup files to see if the backup is incremental/differential or full? How would I know for sure? Is there some where I can see the sizes of the 'incrementals/differentials'?

Also is there a way to directly view a backup drive that has been dedicated to Windows Server backup? It does not show up in Explorer and I also can't get at it from Disk Manager .

As well when I look at  details of backup in the Windows Server backup GUI that show me all the backups that have gone through, I see two column headers - BMR, SSR - what do they represent?

Any help on this is appreciated in advance.

WSUS 80072EFE after KB2992611 on WSUS Server

Last month, I noticed that some 2008R2 servers weren't updating anymore from my 2012R2 WSUS server (it's using SSL, by the way), with error 80072EFE. On the WSUS Server, somewhere between october and november, was installed KB2992611.

I solved it by installing manually KB2992611 and KB3018238 and the non updating server.

Today I made a Win7 32 bit machine from scratch, using the official ISO from VLSC (with SP1) and the client was giving me error 80072EFE when trying to update from WSUS. Installing KB2992611 from Windows Update solved the problem and the machine started to get updates from my WSUS.

Is there something to do to avoid this problem at all? I'm joining a lot of already working clients from other domains to mine and I wouldn't have to check one by one if the need manual patching to work with my WSUS...

Bye

What is best method to migrate Users' Offline Files Data from one server to another?

$

We use Folder Redirection with offline folders. There are ~200 users whose My Documents is redirected to a server. GPO is in place for the folder redirection part and offline folders are enabled by default. There is no policy setting for offline folders.

The current file server is a Windows Server 2003 system. The new file server would be a Windows Server 2008 R2 system in a different domain than the current one. End users are on Windows 7.

I would like to know the best approach to get this migrated across with little or no impact. Let me know if more details are required.

Can't access Shared Folder of Windows Server 2008 Standard

OS -  Windows Server 2008 Standard 64 Bit , WORKGROUP

Anti-Virus - Symantec Endpoint

- Everyday I have to restart the server to be able to access shared folder. After 4 or 5 hours, all PCs could not access to Server Shared Folder suddenly.

So, every morning I restart the server, and afternoon couldn't access anymore.

What could be the problem?

Thanks.

DFS Standards

Hello,

We currently have 7 offices all with fie servers as well as a cofacility.  We are looking to set up DFS between the CO facility and each office file server.  What is the general rule here?

We are thinking of having DFS01 (2012 R2 box) with a fairly large volume to house all the DFS replicas.  Can these all be on the same volume or should we split them up? and if the same volume is OK how do we do an initial clone as a replica cannot already exist on the volume...

on the CO server:

E:\SVR01

E:\SVR02

etc...

Just trying to wrap my head around the structure of it.

Thanks,

Ernst.

Windows Server Replica - minimal permissions

2012/2012 R2 deduplication questions.

$

0

Good day to all. I apologize in advance for my bad English.

I am trying to plan deduplication deployment, but I got few questions. WARNING: there is a lot of text down here.

2012.

1. 2012 dedup does NOT process open files at all (yes/no)?

2. If I set 0 days at file "age" poilicy (MinimumFileAgeDays), will the deduplication task (i mean "optimization") wait for opened file to be closed or it will just skip it and will be completed? If the task will wait the file to be closed, will it impact hard to server resources?

2012 R2.

1. 2012 R2 dedup processes opened files only with "Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) server" setting (yes/no)?

2. For example I set up "Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) server" setting and set "age" policy for files (MinimumFileAgeDays) not 0 days (2 day for example). Will opened files be processed by optimization task (I doubt because opened files are "younger" than 2 days)?

Common questions.

1. Why here (article for 2012 only) the VHD Library which contains "Virtual hard disk files" is called a good target for deduplication? May be it is about deployment storage with vm "image", i mean some analogue of vm template in vSphere andnot about VHDs of started vms?

2. "Process files that have a minimum age of five days according to the Last Modified Time. If Last Access Time is enabled on the server (this is not the default setting), deduplication will use the Last Access Time."

Can I target the optimization task to Last Midified Time with enabled Last AccesS Time? I mean it is useful to turn on the Last Access Time for File Management Tasks, but there could be situation like that: file opens often but not modified at all, so it will not be processed by optimization task just because of Last Acess Time updating.

3. Can someone explain me the OptimizeInUseFiles (what is "15 mines") and OptimizePartialFiles (i cant get the meaning of "including portions of files that are old enough, according to the value of the MinimumFileAgeDays parameter") parameters of Set-DedupVolume?

Thanks in advance.

Windows 7 Client 'sees' an old version of windows 2012 server share

$

Hi All,

I have a problem which seems to be a common theme looking at other threads. Here's the overview of the problem:-

I have multiple windows 7 clients and a windows 8.1 client within a 2008 Server in a domain.

I also have a Windows 2012R2 Server which is not joined to the domain. There is a Share on the 2012R2 which has the Caching Option turned off. Everyone full control on Share & File permissions.

One of the Windows 7 machines in Explorer when it looks at \\2012server\share sees an old version of the folder. It seems that SMB 2 chaching is working too well. Not even pressing F5 or clicking View, Refresh updates windows explorer.

It took a reboot to get the workstation to see the up to date contents of the share on the 2012 server.

We don't seem to have that behaviour with that client against the 2008 server.

I have seen this behaviour on another machine un-related to us at another location which was in a workgroup with a 2012 server and no domain.

Questions:-

  1. Is there some sort of problem with Windows 7 workstations working against 2012 Servers in a non-domain setting or is it just Windows 7 against 2012 servers period?
  2. I understand that Windows 7 utilises SMB1 & SMB2. SMB2 introduced caching. If the server has turned off the share cache option should the client cache the contents of the share or the information about the files & folders & 'file not found' information?
  3. I want to open a file handle to a file on a network share so I can read and write data to it. But I also want to know that when I look at the folder to open the file I'm actually looking at the live version of the folder and files in the folder and not a cached version of the folder. If it's a cached version the file might be there already but I won't see it.
  4. Is there an API call that tells the client to get a fresh view of the server share so I can be absolutely sure that when I look for a file on the server I'm getting the correct answer and not one from cache.

I first posted the question with the same subject "Windows 7 Client 'sees' an old version of windows 2012 server share" in the Windows 7 Networking Fourm https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/23bf3627-987b-4c27-8062-85a284a2cda4/windows-7-client-sees-an-old-version-of-windows-2012-server-share?forum=w7itpronetworking and it was suggested I repost in here. Please do take the time to read the thread which will save time with suggestions that have already been covered.

As the computers that can be affected by this problem are not mine I cannot enforce or guarantee that any of my 'client base' will apply any hotfixes. I will also not have the ability to tweak registry settings as I can't guarantee Admin Access.

It seems that we need to go back to SMB1 as all the tweaks to SMB since those days have introduced problems with the basic requirement of sharing files from a share on a server for Read/Write purposes. I have tried turning a network back to SMB1 and that has resolved a lot of the issues but then I found a post/MS blog that states not to leave the network on SMB1

The Caching option of the share had already been turned off. Surely Windows clients should not cache any information about the share but I think that is not the case.

Thanks is advance

Robert

How to assign different storage to users/clients?

Hello technet!

I have a question about folder redirection and drive storage etc. I have a physical server running windows server 2012 r2 and it got some clients joined to it, i already know how to redirect my documents and pictures etc.

But the problem is: in every video or tutorial i saw they used 1 partition for all user data etc. and i like to have different storage for every user with their own drive letter (It's a total storage of 2tb on this volume):

  • user 1(manager): 1tb
  • user 2(co-manager): 500gb
  • user 3(employee): 250gb
  • global storage for every user to read/write: 250gb

How to make this possible?

Thanks in advance!

Widows Search not working with Data Deduplication?

$

Hi,

I noticed that many files were missing when searching for them on my Server 2012 Fileserver.

After some troubleshooting I noticed that the ones missing, had a Size on Disk of 4KB and the "SparseFile" and "ReparsePoint" (PL) Flags set.

So it looks like they were processed by the enabled Data Deduplication.

Am I missing something here or is it really the case that deduplicated files cannot be indexed by windows search?
