Ownership of folders in file server

Hi Guys,

I am facing a problem with my file server. I have a file server installed windows server 2008 R2 Standard SP1 in it. There are 4 drives and almost 99% folders are created by 1st domain user account having domain admin rights.

Because I was facing problem that 2nd domain user account having domain admin rights was not able to open, change permissions of shared folders and giving error access is denied, so I logged on with 1st domain user account having domain admin rights and transferred the ownership to local admin group (local admin user account resides in this group). So that I can make any kind of changes through local admin account.

Now I can open and provide permissions on single folders through local admin account but still I cant select 'replace all child object permissions from this object' option any where while assigning permissions and getting error access denied.

And I can see 1st domain user account having domain admin rights is still present in ownership tab with local admin group. Ownership has transferred successfully because I got no error while doing that, so what would be the solution for this?

Is there any way we can remove unwanted owners from 'security-advanced-owner-edit' tab and can keep only one owner we want?

FSRM [Source File Path] and DFS

Hi,

When i use the [Source File Path] in a notification email it does not show the source file path but instead shows d:\xxxx which is the local drive of the server hosting the destination share.

The users has a lot of problems with file types that are not allowed. But i can't find a good way to show them the file that has been blocked with out showing them the local server drives or shares and this is not a good way.

Any suggestions to what could be done so i can show the users what files have been blocked?

Network Share (user Home Folder) no longer connects (Win7 64bit client, 2008 R2 file server)

User was able to naigate to their home folder (network location mapped to H:\ drive via active directory user object setting - profile tab), but now when they attempt to click on their H: drive they receive the following error:

Location is not available

H:\ refers to a location that is unavailable.  It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or your network, an then try again.  If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location.

I know that I can fix this issue by using the following reg fix:

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\CSC\Parameters and create a new REG_DWORD – FormatDatabase (value 1)

The primary function of this is to clear the CSC cache on the Win7 desktop, but I really don't want to clear the cache as it means that I have to robocopy the entire contents out of the CSC first, which can be quite large.

I have tried running GPUPDATE /FORCE, but this makes no difference.  I have also tried running achkdsk /r /x which was suggested on another forum, but this doesn't work either:

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Changing Hot Spare to Increase Volume Size

Not sure how this happened, but I have 4 HDDs (0 to 3), and HDD 1 is in state "Ready" instead of "Online", and as a Hot Spare.  Is there way to change the Hot Spare to increase the total raid capacity?

I'm using Dell PE2900, Win 2003 Srv, PERC 5/i Integrated, 4x 145GB SAS drives.  I've updated the firmwares, BIOS, drivers, and latest Dell OMS v7.4.0.  But I don't see any option to convert the Hot Spare.

Thanks.

My Lab Test - DFS namespace accessing problem from Backup DC

Hi..

this are all in virtual setup for test and learning. I setup 2 win server 2008 and 1 win xp as client .

Server 1 name - Mars: installed Active directory (first domain), domain name universe.com. Installed dfs and configured namespace and added folder target. Every thing works from client as expected.

Installed server 2 name - Moon as backup domain controller. Active directory users and computers everything synced good.

In Mars added another target and setup replication. as shown in image.(couldnt get original but this is how it looks)

technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc732863%28v=ws.10%29  .first image.

I also did "add name server"--> Moon ---from Mars

Every thing works fine as expected but when i disconnect the network cable of my Mars then i cannot view namespace in Moon, although client pc can browse DFS.

My Shared folders became fault tolerant OK, but i cannot manage my namespace from my second server, why is that.

Regards.

Searching and Indexing Redirected Folders on the Hosting Windows Server Computer

$

In addition to a laptop, I frequently work directly on a Windows Server 2012 R2 computer. We have Redirected Folders set up on DFS (for failover redundancy) so that my Documents folder is in: network\usersname\documents. This all works fine on Windows 7 and 8 client computers connected to the network.

2 Questions for accessing these files on server computers:

1. On a server that is hosting the files, it has Desktop Experience enabled and Windows Search. If I navigate manually through the DFS root folder to my documents folder, I can search and it properly uses the index. This proves the location is properly indexed. However, if I access the folders through the official "Documents" folder from the Folder Redirection (a network share pointing to the same server computer I'm working on), it performs an un-indexed search (slow and ignores file contents, but does find files eventually if the search term is in their filename). Is there a way to force the server to use the indexed search on the Redirected Folders (my Documents folder in particular) when working on that server when logged in locally on that server?

2. On all servers (and only on servers), the Redirected Folders policy is not being applied properly, or at least the personal folders are not being updated on other servers. There is no problem on workstation/client computers -- those are all correctly showing the Redirected Folders. I looked in the Group Policy and don't see that servers are excluded from Folder Redirection and actually see the notice about applying folder redirections when logging in on other servers, but the folders are not updated to new Redirected Folder network destination. Any ideas why Servers would not gain the Redirected Folders but clients work fine? Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place in the Group Policies. Where should I check?

Thanks,
Colin

Windows Server 2003 file share issues - on wifi directory changes to root automatically

I have this strange issue and it ONLY happens on wifi.

If I browse to windows share: \\hpdsfandp\common$\folder1\folder2 - within seconds explorer changes the directory back to \\hpdsfandp\common$

*this does not happen if I'm on ethernet

*this does not happen if I go to a different server (eg) \\etdb2\c$\folder1

I tried diff wireless access points and it happens on both.  Sometimes the issue goes away but then comes back the next day

I did run wireshark on the client and I got a few errors:

ERROR (SMB):  NT Status: STATUS_INVALID_HANDLE

ERROR (SMB):  NT Status: STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND

DFS Namespace targets not showing up on clients

$

Hello,

I decommed a namespace server tonight, having added another.

I only have two sites, a main site and a DR site, one namespace server per-site.  I am testing on clients that are on the main site.  I believe both should be listed, even though the other namespace server is out of the site.  Although clients can use the DFS UNC path, the only target that's listed is the actual UNC path to the resource... no way to make alternate site's namespace server the target.

I see in adsiedit.msc that it is listed under dfs-configuration remoteServerName attribute lists the UNC path to both namespace servers.

Note that I ran through all five checks listed on this page without issue (other than my SANs not support RPC). For future reference, those tests would be:

DFSDIAG /TestDCs

DFSDiag /TestSites /DFSPath:\\Contoso.com\Namespace2 /Recurse /Full

DFSDiag /TestDFSConfig /DFSRoot:\\Contoso.com\MyNamespace

DFSDiag /TestDFSIntegrity /DFSRoot:\\Contoso.com\MyNamespace /Recurse /Full

DFSDiag /TestReferral /DFSPath:\\Contoso.com\MyNamespace

I'm not sure how to further troubleshoot the issue, and, in fact, am not sure if it's even an issue.

Please let me know any other ideas.

Thanks,

Matt

Client for NFS fails to restart - Event ID: 16387 - Windows(R) failed a request to initialize the Network File System (NFS) redirector

$

I have seen this issue out there in a few threads but a definitive solution has not been posted by Microsoft that I can find. So here is the simple answer. The long answer why this doesn't work on a default install of MSNFS is going to have to come from Microsoft and should be in the form of a hotfix.

Problem Description

On boot, Client for NFS starts and remains running. If an attempt is made to restart the service from the MMC or nfsadmin, an error occurs and nfsclnt fails to start.

Event log error:

==================================================================

Log Name:      Application
Source:        NfsClnt
Date:          7/7/2011 2:39:51 PM

Windows(R) failed a request to initialize the Network File System (NFS) redirector<[d:\w7rtm\base\fs\remotefs\nfs\client\nfsclient\service.c:199] : 0: The operation completed successfully.
>.

  Client for NFS cannot start.

Windows may be low on system resources.  Try increasing available system resources by closing programs, then start Client for NFS manually.
==================================================================

PROBLEM CAUSED BY: When shutting down Client for NFS using the Services GUI, Client for NFS Redirector is not shut down

SOLUTION: Stop NFS Redirector - 'sc stop NfsRdr' - Then start NFS client service - 'nfsadmin start client'

Use 'nfsadmin client stop' to correctly shut down both the Client for NFS service and the Client for NFS Redirector.

'Network File System (NFS) redirector' is actually "Client for NFS Redirector" and not listed as a service even though "Client for NFS" requires it.

Using 'sc', details on the hidden NfsRdr system component can be queried and then used to stop the redirector so that nfsclnt.exe can reload it on start up using the Services GUI.

C:\Windows\System32>sc GetDisplayName NfsRdr
[SC] GetServiceDisplayName SUCCESS
Name = Client for NFS Redirector

C:\Windows\System32>sc qdescription NfsRdr
[SC] QueryServiceConfig2 SUCCESS

SERVICE_NAME: NfsRdr

DFS Linked Folders disappearing

$

I just built a brand new server with Windows Server 2012 and have configured a DFS Root with linked folders on it and found an issue.

Scenario:

  \\Server\Storage share is setup for S:\ (NET SHARE Storage=S:\ /Grant:"BUILTIN\Administrators",FULL /Grant:"NT Authority\Authenticated Users",READ)

DFS Root Configured to point to \\Server\Storage  (DFSUTIL /AddFtRoot /Server:SERVER /Share:Storage)

  \\Server\Storage\Test is a linked folder pointing to\\Server2\Test  (DFSUTIL LINK ADD \\Domain\Storage\Test \\SERVER2\Test)

Within 1 hour of creating the linked folder, restarting the computer, or restarting the DFS service, the folder disappears and the following event is logged in the event log:

Event 518
DFSN service has successfully deleted DFS reparse point \STORAGE on volume S:\. The reparse point was deleted because it was not belonging to any of the namespaces on this server.

The interesting thing is that while the folder is no longer visible - you can still access the folder directly by going to\\Domain\Storage\Test.

After a few hours of troubleshooting - I finally think I tracked down the issue and at least have it working.

The problem only occurs for me if the DFS Root Share points to the root of a drive.  In this case\\Domain\Storage points to \\Server\Storage and the Storage share points to the S: drive.  I tried similar Roots/Folders on other drives with the same results.

If, however, I create a root that points to a share that is not at the Root Level of a drive (i.e. NET SHARE Storage=S:\Storage) - than the problem goes away.

This issue occurs regardless of Security/Share permissions.  I've also tried all of the common T/S steps I've seen while researching this (Checking replication, etc).  Windows 2012 is fully up to date with patches.

Any other suggestions/thoughts?  While I have it working by pointing to a sub-folder on the drive - that is not the way I'd like it to be...

File CRC error on Read/Copy on NTFS on Parity Storage Pool

$

I can not figure out a way to resolve a CRC error while trying to Read/Copy a file that resides on NTFS on a Parity Storage Pool over 10 disks.
I would have figured that the Parity Pool would have caught the disk CRC error and healed the data with the Parity data. It doesn't.
XCopy does not work.
Robocopy does not work.
Cacls does not work.
Chkdsk /f does not find any errors.
Chkdsk /r /x does not find any errors.
fsutil repair file does not find any errors.

What am I missing? I thought Parity was supposed to protect me from a drive failure. In this case it isn't a complete drive failure, but the drive is reporting a failure.

Thanks,
Scott

DFS Root Folder Empty after mapping

$

Hi ,

I have DFS Namespace created in a cluster mode across Windows server 2008 R2 in my environment.

Some users have the problem that their Shared Folder (DFS Root Folder like "\\abc-intranet.net\MyDFSroot" is Empty or Sometime it shows all the Shared folders (in thousands) within DFS root , While they can access the Shared Folders to which they have been given access by using their UNC paths without any issues.

Could anyone suggest why the Mapping of DFS root doesnot show any folders to users to which they have access? Where might be the bug?

Generally the mapping of DFS root Folder should contain all the Shared folders to which the users have access to.

Any Bright ideas or suggestions are highly appreciated.

Thanks.

Folder redirection with Offline files enabled - Can I change the location of the locally cached files?

$

I have a 2012 r2 server setup with folder redirection and offline files enabled. All this works perfectly.

As you probably know, the local cache for offline files is stored at c:\windows\csc\v2.0.6\namespace\servername\

The problem I have run into is that one user (who cannot be told to delete files cough ceo cough) has a very large documents folder, and a small SSD drive for his C drive. So the offline files are filling up his SSD. He wants all his files to be synced, so decreasing the max disk usage is also not an option.

What I would like to do is move the Offline files to his D drive which is a large drive, however I have been unable to find any official method for doing this. Is there any provision to change this?

If not, would it work to move the entire \servername\ path to the d drive and then create a junction at c:\windows\csc\v2.0.6\namespace\servername\ that points to d:\servername\?

Thanks,

Travis

Do I need DFSR in a single server environment?

$

0

I have a 2012 Host, running a single 2012 Guest.  Guest is running as a DC with AD, DNS, DHCP, and File Services.  DFSR is running, and it gives a warning every time my back runs (Backup is running on Host).  Warning is The DFS Replication service stopped replication on volume F:......and long message about Database, yada yada yada.

Do I need to run DFSR?  Again, single server, no file replication to different offices.  I'm not finding a clear answer to that question.

Second, Server Manager should, according to TechNet, have under the Tools option the ability to turn off DFSR.  I cannot find that option.  So, IF I can turn it off, can I simply disable the DFS Namespace and DFS Replication services?

I would prefer eliminating rather than ignoring warnings.

Thanks

Trying to Unoptimize a Dedup Volume - Progress stays at 0%

$

For various reasons, I'm trying to rehydrate my dedup volumes on a recently deployed File Server 2012 R2.  There's 5 volumes with dedup turned on - savings ranging from 28% to 49%, and the sizes range from 200GB to 2TB.

I'm running the powershell command:

start-dedupjob -volume "I:" -type unoptimization -priority high

However, after a day, the result of "get-dedupjob" is that the unoptimization type is still running, but shows 0% progress.  Shouldn't there be some indications that the job is running?  I know the job is going to take awhile, but even the small volumes aren't moving.

I also ran "get-dedupstats" and compared the before and after "optimizedfiles" category, and that is unchanged as well.

Any ideas?

(Sidenote: prior to running the command, I put the volume folders in the "excluded" folder list so they wouldn't reoptimize after the job was done.  Is this right?)

There's no error in the event logs, and in the Dedup log files, it shows that the job has started, and requested memory space, but nothing after that.
