Hi Team,

Please give a guide line on Windows server update service that we are planning to move on another server (Windows server2012). currently this service is installed on windows 2008, now we are planning to move this service to another new server with 2012 os.

The issue is,

when I check client machines there are a lot of patches are missing, by changing this server i want to confirm all the client machines's security patches are up to date. how do i can achieve this  ? if i configure a new server and if i push all security patches to client machine, what will happen in client machines installed patches ? is it overwrite ?

Problem with Storagespaces LSI9207-8e and intel jbod2224s2dp

I´m trying to setup storagespaces on two server and a Intel jbod, the setup is:

Two HP DL 380p Gen 8 servers with a LSI 9207-8e card connected with two SAS cables to a Intel jbod2224s2dp.
Cable Setup: Nod1 to jbod connector A primary and A secondary
Nod2 to jbod connector B primary and B secondary

When I run the Powershell Command "get-storageenclosure" (on either server). The Status that comes up is "Unhealthy", but the column "ElementTypesInError" is empty, so I can not detemine whats wrong.

And when I look at "Server Manager - File and Storage Services - Volumes - Storage Pools" Server one get all info, including Chassi info and One server just get basic info.
If I disconnect the SAS cables (with the server power on) and do a refresh, reconnect the cables and do a new refresh. The server get all info including the chassi info.

I have updated to the latest FW (v0.13.0.9) on the JBOD, HBAs (P20 Firmware) and server (P70 08/02/2014).
I have changed SAS cables.

I have submitted a service request to Intel and they say it has nothing to do with the JBOD, it is a problem with the LSI chip controllers.
I have submitted a service request to LSI and the I should downgrade the FW to P19.
I downgraded FW on the HBAs, no difference.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Setting up FTP on Domain Controller using User Isolation

Hi all,

Our FTP site is set on a domain controller (not best practice i know, but i wasn't involved in the implementation of it) However, it currently works with the "FTP Root Directory" option selected, however this is not very secure as everyone has access to everything. I need to set it up so it uses "Username Directory" as this is a domain controller, and i want them to authenticate via AD User/Group. However when i select that option, i can't connect to the FTP site - Connection attempt failed with"EAI_NONAME - Neither nodename nor servname provided, or not known". When i change it back to "FTP Root Directory" it connects fine.

Basic Authentication is Enabled and Anonymous Authentication is disabled.

Virtual Directory option is selected under directory listing options.

Our FTP folder structure is E:\FTPRoot it got moved to this drive as it's a bigger drive.

I've set up a Virtual Directory for the FTP site and for the individual folders.

I'm stuck on what else to try, any advice and guidance would be appreciated.

Hi, in windows 2012 DataCenter, I installed the Iscsi target role and went on to set an iscsi disk.

but when launching "new Iscsi virtual disk" wizard (Server Manager\File and Storage Services\iSCSI -> new iscsi virtual disk)

I see no servers in list (upper windows) and instead it just states "no eligible servers are available".

it happens on both of my servers.. not just one..

anyone has any idea?

MoveSecurityAttributes in Server 2012 R2

Hi,

Does anyone know whether the MoveSecurityAttributes registry setting should work in Server 2012? In 2008 you could enable this to make moved files/folders inherit permissions from their parent. But I can't get it working in 2012.

2008 needed a a hotfix (kb/2617058) to get it working, though - reckon I can install this on 2012?

(can't add links till I'm verified, sorry)

Cheers,

Andrew

DFS Replica Member

Hello,

is it possible to rename DFS replica member without problems in replication process or any other issues?

We had two DFS servers, SRV1 and SRV2  (2008R2). They were not namespace servers. Replication was working without problems. Now we installed two new server SRV1_NEW and SRV2_NEW (Win 2012R2). We successfully replicated data to new two servers and successful removed old ones. Replication between new two works without problems, they still aren't namespace servers (this functionality exists on two other servers).

We want to keep old names so we want to rename this new two servers to SRV1 and SRV2. Is there anything we need to be careful off or we can simply rename first one, wait a few minutes and rename the second one?

Thank you!

Server 2012 R2 File Server Stops Responding to SMB Connections

$

Hi There,

Massive shot in the dark here but I am struggling with a pretty major issue atm.  We have a production file server that is hosted on the following:

Dell MD 3220i -> iSCSI -> Server 2008 R2 Hyper-v Cluster -> Passthrough Disk -> Server 2012 R2 File Server VM

Essentially 3 times now, roughly a month or so apart.  The file server stops accepting connections.  During this time, the server is perfectly accessible through rdp or with a simple ping.  I can browse the files on the server directly but no-one appears to be able to access the shares over SMB.  A reboot of the server fixes the issue.

As per a KB article I removed nod antivirus from the server to rule out a conflicting filter mode driver after the second fault.  Sadly yesterday it happened again.

The only relevant errors in the servers log files are:

SMB Server Event ID 551

SMB Session Authentication Failure Client Name: \\192.168.105.79 Client Address: 192.168.105.79:50774 User Name: HHS\H6-08$ Session ID: 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF Status: Insufficient server resources exist to complete the request. (0xC0000205) Guidance: You should expect this error when attempting to connect to shares using incorrect credentials. This error does not always indicate a problem with authorization, but mainly authentication. It is more common with non-Windows clients. This error can occur when using incorrect usernames and passwords with NTLM, mismatched LmCompatibility settings between client and server, duplicate Kerberos service principal names, incorrect Kerberos ticket-granting service tickets, or Guest accounts without Guest access enabled

and

SMB Server event ID 1020
File system operation has taken longer than expected.

Client Name: \\192.168.105.97
Client Address: 192.168.105.97:49571
User Name: HHS\12J.Champion
Session ID: 0x2C07B40004A5
Share Name: \\*\Subjects
File Name:
Command: 5
Duration (in milliseconds): 176784
Warning Threshold (in milliseconds): 120000

Guidance:

The underlying file system has taken too long to respond to an operation. This typically indicates a problem with the storage and not SMB.

I have checked the underlying disk/iscsi/network hyper-v cluster for any other errors or issues, but as far as I can tell everything is fine.

Is it possible that something else is left over from the NOD antivirus installation?

Looking for suggestions on how to troubleshoot this further.

Thanks

clone disk problem?

Hi,

I have 2 Virtual Machines, 1 production and 1 test. Both VMs have a data disk and the test datadisk is a clone disk.

Because the cloned data disk is mounted on a seperate VM there are no problems with identical disk IDs etc.

But, what if I want to save on 1 VM and have both disks running in the same filserver VM? Are those problems easily solvable?

For instance, when I clone a VMWare datastore and add it to the inventory vSphere will see the identical ID and ask me if it needs to assign a new ID. The same for a VM that was cloned. I wonder if Windows fileserver has identical wizzards to solve the problem of mounting a cloned drive on the same VM.

Does anyone know?

Deduplication vs FSRM hard quotas

$

I was reading about deduplication on Windows Server 2012 R2 when I found this limitation:

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-ca/library/hh831454.aspx

"Creating a hard quota on a volume root folder that also has deduplication enabled is not supported. When a hard quota is present on a volume root, the actual free space on the volume and the quota restricted space on the volume are not the same. This may cause deduplication optimization jobs to fail.

Creating a soft quota on a volume root that has deduplication enabled is supported. When FSRM quotas encounter a deduplicated file, File Server Resource Manager accounts for it based on the file’s logical size. Quota usage (including any quota thresholds) does not change when a file is processed by deduplication. All other FSRM quota functionality, including volume-root soft quotas and quotas on subfolders, work normally when using deduplication."

I'm not sure how I should interpret this.

I see two possible ways:

1) Hard quotas are unsupported ONLY if applied on the root of a deduplicated volume and OK on folders stored on that same volume.

2) Only soft quotas are supported.

Which one is the right way to understand this ? (I prefer the first one ;) ).

Thanks

FSRM [Source File Path] and DFS

Hi,

When i use the [Source File Path] in a notification email it does not show the source file path but instead shows d:\xxxx which is the local drive of the server hosting the destination share.

The users has a lot of problems with file types that are not allowed. But i can't find a good way to show them the file that has been blocked with out showing them the local server drives or shares and this is not a good way.

Any suggestions to what could be done so i can show the users what files have been blocked?

Storage Reports aren't finding known file types

I have a Windows Server 2008R2 file server and I've configured a "Files by File Group" report to find audio/music and image files on a specific drive.  The report isn't finding all of the WMA and JPEG/JPG files on the drive.  I manually ran a search for the WMAs and came up with 3,963 WMA files (16GB), whereas the Storage Report Manager report only showed one file.  I'm trying to determine why the report isn't finding these (and possibly) file types.

Any thoughts?

Show only folders you have permissions against.

I have a client that complains how convoluted shares are for users with access to multiple shares.

Currently, someone with access to 5 departments has 5 mapped drives.

I want to implement it so that they have one main share. Under that share are department folders. Some people have access to 3 of those departments. A couple people only have access to half the folders under the shares they have access to.

How can I make it so that I can simply share the root folder to everyone and they will only see subfolders they have permissions against?

Needed to copy the share from one server to share in another server

Hi ,

Needed to copy the data from one share named as xyz in the server 1 to the another share abc in another server 2.

Share xyz data should be copied to the share abc which has already different data in it .We need to copy all the data from the share xyz to the share abc  without deleting any existing data in the destination share.

I know that /MIR option will replace the destination same as source

Can anybody help us in the Robocopy command & switches for this activity?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

THat is the error I get when adding this member to an existing replication group.

directory rights

I am setting up directory where I gave domain users list and write so they can move files into a directory and once they are place they cannot delete. However I noticed that they can overwrite an existing file with the same name is there a way to set the rights so they can place a file but not be able to overwrite? I know I can place a deny delete in the advanced for domain users however that would then affect the full access group users and prevent them from deleting since they are members of the domain and full access group.

Network Share (user Home Folder) no longer connects (Win7 64bit client, 2008 R2 file server)

User was able to naigate to their home folder (network location mapped to H:\ drive via active directory user object setting - profile tab), but now when they attempt to click on their H: drive they receive the following error:

Location is not available

H:\ refers to a location that is unavailable.  It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or your network, an then try again.  If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location.

I know that I can fix this issue by using the following reg fix:

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\CSC\Parameters and create a new REG_DWORD – FormatDatabase (value 1)

The primary function of this is to clear the CSC cache on the Win7 desktop, but I really don't want to clear the cache as it means that I have to robocopy the entire contents out of the CSC first, which can be quite large.

I have tried running GPUPDATE /FORCE, but this makes no difference.  I have also tried running achkdsk /r /x which was suggested on another forum, but this doesn't work either:

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
