Enabling continuous availability

$

I setup a new file server cluster with 2012 and ran the migration wizard to move everything from my 2008 R2 cluster to this new 2012.

Everything seems to be working fine except I cannot enable continuous availability on existing shares (haven't tried new share yet)

When I attempt to I just get: "Error occurred while updating an SMB share. The request is not supported"

I haven't found anything in the eventviewer that helps me diagnose this problem either.

Hello

I am trying to install MP on secondary server from primary. however I am experiencing strange problem. when I create MP from primary, wizard shows completed successfully but nothing happens on secondary. no event is generated, no mp.msi or mpsetup.log or mpcontrol.log file is created. neither app pools gets creates in IIS. I have installed SCCM successfully. but nothing is happening after that. in event i saw 1035 event but i don't think that could raise this issue. I have both win 2k3 servers.

I am performing reinstallation on the server. i have followed all the instruction before i install server. the reason behind installation is SMS_CCM folder is creates under C:\windows\syswow64 folder instead of by default location G:\ drive where SCCM installed... can i someone help me....

Share and Storage Manager - how to get information from "Open files"

$

I'm facing difficult problem regarding renaming of AD user remote profile and home folders directories.

Example: Login:BALITZMA HF:\alien.net\users\home\BALITZMA PF:\alien.net\users\profile\BALITZMA

I have no problems using Powershell to change name of those folders but there are some situations that files from that folders are currently in use. And since those folders are located in Windows File Clusters, I must manually find all opened files by BALITZMA using "Share and Storage Manager"

This is what i mean:

The question is: is there any easy way to "display current opened files for user" from powershell/other tool that can be run from command line and produce some output about witch files are in use and ability to use "Close selected" feature?

Roaming Profile/Redirected folders issue with DFS...

We currently host our Remote Desktop user profiles and redirected desktops and mydocs on DFS shares.  The DFS Namespace is hosted one several servers and the targets are on two servers.  The first folder target server is running Server 2008 R2 and the second folder target server is running Server 2012.  The remote desktop session hosts are running Server 2008 R2. We have made no changes to either server nor DFS in the last two weeks.  The last two mornings users have come in and gotten temporary profiles and their file redirection has failed.

Here are the associated event log entries for the profile:

Based upon the errors it would be natural to assume there was a permissions error.  I've reviewed the share level and ntfs permissions and found them to be consistent with recommendations on technet.  When I login with administrator credentials I get a temporary profile as well.  I can navigate to the DFS share from the run dialog and the share is accessible.  After I access the DFS share I log off the RDS session host and back on and I get my profile and redirected folders.  All users who login after that point also get their profiles and redirected folders successfully.  For the rest of the day we have no issues.  We only have these issues first thing in the morning.

I am stumped.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for your help.

2008R2: Problem deleting folders previously marked as read-only in a DFS

$

I have a folder at a drive that was previously read-only in a DFS. The drive went full so I would like to move data to another disk. Now I've stopped the DFS and I've deleted the server as a member in the DFS. Now I have copied the data to another drive and I've started the DFS again, readded the computer with the new folder as member. This is done over 3-4 days as the amount of data is large.

However I cannot delte files in the old drive. It seems somehow marked as read only. I have full access to the files, and I've also tried deleting in admin mode. The error from CMD.EXE when trying del <filename>  is "Access is denied."

Can someone explain the numbers I'm seeing here, related to server 2012 Dedup?

$

0

On a 2012 Standard server, I have deduplication turned on for a data volume.  Several directories are set up as exclusions in dedup settings, so there are only 2 directories which should be getting deduplicated.  (And one of those is a running VM which should have been excluded, but looks like it got missed.)

The other directory targeted for dedup contains Veeam backup files of several Hyper-V VM's.  When I look at the properties of this volume (Drive D:), I see 0.98TB used, 1.28TB Free, with a capacity of 2.27TB.

If I select all of the folders on the drive except the 2 that are being deduplicated and pull up the properties window, it shows size: 24.4GB, and size on disk: 24.4GB.  Even the folder with the running VM shows both the size and size on disk as 45.0GB.

So far, those numbers make sense to me.  But when I pull up the properties of the "D:\Backups" folder, it shows Size: 1.38TB, and Size on disk: 36.7GB.  While I know server 2012 deduplication is good, those numbers don't seem right.  Then, going a step further, I pulled up properties of some individual files inside the D:\Backups directory.  The files in that directory vary in size, anywhere from 5GB to 600GB, but all show a size on disk of 4.00kb.  (Except the newest backup, which hasn't been through a dedup cycle yet, so it still shows the full size and size on disk as the same.)

Is it expected that all files which have been deduplicated would show a size on disk of just 4k?

What numbers should I believe when it comes to file sizes and disk utilization?  The file size numbers just don't add up, but are the used/free space numbers correct as shown in the volume properties?

Thanks!

Robocopy - Move Files/Folders and retain time/date‏

I am helping a department creaning their data - they have around 2TB.

I have made a copy of all the data (Zero length files) to a folder - this way i can do some test runs of the scripts. The next thing i want to do is MOVE all data to a folder called "Old Data" - this is presenting some problems. I need to have the data moved and at the same time retain time and date information on files and folders. The properties are OK on the files, but the folders are getting a new "Modified" date (time and date of the move).

Am i missing some fantastic option that will solve my problem?

Currently i am trying with this:

Robocopy.exe Source Destination /MOVE /COPYALL /R:0 /DCOPY:T /TEE /NP

If it do like below - but i con't want to keep the source when first copied, and i cannot make a 4TB datastore, so i can delete the files afterwards.

Robocopy.exe Source Destination /MIR /COPYALL /R:0 /DCOPY:T /TEE /NP

Please help!:)

DFSR and nightly resyncs

$

We have an odd issue which has recently started. We have 4 offices connected using DFSR replicating 1,300,000 files. We recently replaced 2 older servers with 2012 standard boxes with two other 2003r2 servers still in place. Everything has worked for 1-2 months however in the last week every night the DFS decides to run some kind of consistency check and I will see a backlog of 1,300,000 files waiting to go from one server to all of the others. The backlog appears every night at 1AM.

So far I have:

Disabled Sophos on the member that generates the backlog

Backup finishes by 21.30

Nothing in the event viewer around this time

No server reboots or updates during this time.

Checking the debug logs, at midnight we start to generate approx 26 debug logs per minute (so I am assuming this is when it starts)

Below is the last log entry before it starts flooding the log with the RefreshRecord entries:

Can't view DFSR Health Reports in IE 10 or IE11

As a part of monitoring our DFSR infrastructure, I generate health reports on a weekly basis and have them emailed to me.  The DFSR reports require IE in order to be viewed.  On top of that, they require IE9.  While I was able to display the page in compatibility view, in IE 10, I'm not unable to do this in IE 11 and I'm left unable to review my reports without using a separate computer.  I posted this hear because it seems about time that the DFSR reports get a refresh and get compatible with the latest browsers.  In the meantime, how would you suggest I go about viewing my reports?

Open Ldap as an NFS User Mapping Store for NFS for Server 2012

Has anyone been able to get server 2012 to use OpenLdap as a naming store for NFS?

Everything says you should be able to use an RFC2307 standard ldap store but I just can't seem to make it work.

AD works just fine.

Mostly I get messages "A Device attached to the system is not functioning"

Evetviewer says it connected to LDAP but when it goes to query I get nothing...

Windows 2008 & Windows 2003 SBS - DFS - Mapped drives hang randomly

I have two servers that are DC's one is a Windows 2003 SBS SP2 and the second is a Windows 2008 Server.

They use DFS with FRS.

We've have a mix of windows Vista and Windows 7 machines on our network 32 and 64bit.

All the sudden lately we've been experiencing hanging randomly when accessing the DFS network shares on all the machines.

I have a saved cap file with a few times when the issues has occurred. I see a lot of errors but not defiant reason as to why we are experiencing hanging.

Below is a snip-it of errors from the time frame when one of the hanging of access occurred.

Unable to access Parity Volume on Storage spaces

$

I have raised a case with Microsoft support, but posting here to hopefully get a faster response (case raised almost a week ago!)

I have a Windows Server 2012 file server, 4 USB3 disks, 4TB each, brand new. Created a new storage pool for the disks, created a single virtual disk, parity redundancy, thick provisioned to consume all available space in the pool. New NTFS volume on top (entire disk).

Volume worked well for 4 weeks, went to create a new file share, system crashed, now volume is unavailable. I can see the drive letter, but accessing the drive causes the system to become unstable.

Some diagnostic information:

As you can see, everything looks very good, but try as you might, you just cannot read the NTFS file system on that virtual disk.

I tried repair-virtual disk, but it says their is nothing to do, I tried repair volume but it just sits there and doesn't do anything.

The machine is backed up to an extent, but I am very frustrated at this whole thing and would like some of the non-backed up data back too. Also, its hard to sell this new technology to customers if its this unstable.

Does anyone have any suggestions? please?

2008R2 - File Server Resource Manager Quotas - Can't reset peak usage

I just implemented Quotas using File Server Resource Manager in Server 2008R2 for user folders.  I auto applied the quota to all subfolders of a folder.  I have a user who was over their limit, but has since removed a bunch of data and is now well under their limit.  FSRM still shows that the users peak usage is at 28GB when it's only at 150MB.  When I right click the user and try to reset the peak usage, nothing happens.  They are unable to save any documents to the their user folder.

As part of that, I want them to be able to add files and folders to inside either CF01 or CF03, BUT I don't want them to be able to inadvertantly drag/drop the CF01 folder into the CF03 folder.

Rather than type out each setting, I've included the Powershell get-acl output for all three folders.

I'm almost there, because I've got User1 only seeing CF01 and CF03 and they are able to open and view the contents, and not see CF02.

User1 can add files/folders to CF03, User1 can edit files in CF01, but can't add files/folders to CF01.  User1 can't drag/drop CF01 into CF03 and vice-versa (which is what I want).

Does it look like I'm overlooking a setting on the Security tab of either CF?

SMB over VPN not working

I have a web server (one NIC only with two public IP's directly connected to the internet). The server is running win. server 2008 standard. I have installed RRAS server and configured static IP pool (192.168.33.0 - 192.168.33.10). The Dial in (RAS) interface gets the IP 192.168.33.1...

I have also configured firewall (windows firewall and advanced security) to allow file and printing sharing (inbound). Also I have enabled MS SQL port, Remote desktop etc...
Everything works ok only file sharing is not working. I cannot open any shared folder (I'am using \\192.168.33.1\sharedfolder). Also the same problem exist directly on my server if I try to open shared folder. I get an error (the network path was not found).

I found out that for dial-in interface SMB ports aren't open (for all other IP's on LAN interface they are). I have tried opening those port's directly in firewall but without luck. The ports are closed. It looks like the system locks those ports by default....

I have simmilar configuration on another server running win 2003. All needed ports on LAN IP and dial-up interface IP are open, so I think the problem with win 2008 lies in blocking those ports...

Any ideas

Hi Experts,

I   have  Windows 2003 R2 S2 Microsoft Cluster  , we are facing Cluster  Failover  issue to one of our Server .

Server Problem start with   Blue dump error , I have Started Server With Last good configuration.

Problem not resolved, and  Operating System  repaired by Support partner.

We have also try  Evict a Node from Cluster and re-join cluster, but problem is not resove.

   Details of error.

  1. Failover not working due Cluster Disk ( SAN Storage)  not moving from one Server  to  2nd Server.
  2. Cluster Disk Showing unknown  and  unreadable in Disk Management on 2nd Server when we move cluster group.
  3. SAN Storage LUNs are showing in Storage Manager.

  1. After repetitive remove and re-installed of Storage and Multi Path Driver , Cluster  is working fine  with our SAP system, but after restart the Server  same problem occurs.
  2. Following are main  error occurs  after Cluster Group movement  :

1>    Delayed Write Failed} Windows was unable to save all the data for the file – Event ID : 50

2>    Cluster resource 'Disk Q:' in Resource Group 'Cluster Group' failed.         Event ID : 1069

3>    The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur. -      Evend  ID :  57

4>    Cluster service was halted to prevent an inconsistency within the server cluster. The error code was 5027. Event ID : 1073

Filserver migration

Hi

I am are going to change file server, and the plan is following and I wonder if someone can see any potential problems with this plan, I cannot test it before the actually migration.

I have a new installed file server windows server 2012, that’s the new server. SWE-FS-xxx

The olds fileserver is a windows 2008 R2 server.  SWE-FS-001

Many users running offline files on their home drive on their W7 machines (that they have manually set at the client). The mapping of the home drive is done on the accounts, other mappings are done in login scripts and also in group policy’s and everything points to SWE-FS-001

I want to avoid having a new name on the new fileserver because off all stuffs that points to the fileserver.

  1. The plan is following, copy all data with robocopy  from SWE-FS-001 to SWE-FS-xxx and including all ntfs permissions.
  2. Create all shares on SWE-FS-xxx that exist on SWE-FS-001
  3. Turn off SWE-FS-001
  4. Delete the machine account for SWE-FS-001 in the domain.
  5. Rename SWE-FS-xxx to SWE-fs-001
  6. Check that the ip of the new fileserver have updated correct in the DNS so the server name SWE-FS-001 resolves to the ip off the new fileserver.

After these steps I hope that everything works after the weekend when users coming to the office, have someone done a file server migration and used this method?
