File in shared folder not accessible for one user

$

Hello all,

At the moment our file server (w2k3) has a shared folder structure. Folders, subfolders and files inherit permissions from parent andEveryone has read, write, execute permissions.

There is one domain user (W7) who can't see a certain file in one of those folders even though the file inherits its permission from the parent folder. Every other file in this folder he can access.

The solution I found was to make a copy (thus the same permissions?) of the file (in the same folder) and suddenly the file was visible.However when I renamed the copied file to its original name, it disappeared again for that user!

Is there an explanation for these anomalies or have I overlooked something?

DFSUtil fails to create target folder but GUI does

Hi all, trying to use DFSUTIL to create some DFS links along with their associated shares. This would be the equivalent of creating a new folder in the namespace and specifying a share which doesn't exist as your target. The DFS console warns you that it doesn't exist and prompts you to allow it to create. This works flawlessly in the GUI.

Now I'm trying to script some of these things out using DFSUTIL from the command line and I can create the target and add links just fine, but the folders referenced never show up in the file system.

DFSUtil.exe link add \\mydfs.name.local\share\XYZ \\server01\share\XYZ

The result is that the command completes successfully. I can see the link is there and it's correct. Everything checks out, the GUI confirms this. The only difference is the folder specified in \\server01\share\XYZ never gets created. The link in the namespace shows up just fine at: \\mydfs.name.local\share\xyz but it's unclickable since it's referencing a target which doesn't exist.

If I later issue a target add command:

DFSUtil.exe target add \\mydfs.name.local\share\XYZ \\server02\share\XYZ

That also completes successfully. However, just like the previous case, I see the added target in the GUI and properties on the actual namespace folder confirms it's in there and it's correct, however, as the folder doesn't generate on the target server, the link itself is invalid.

I've tried appending the -restore command line switch and doesn't seem to be any different with or without. The worst part of this is that I know it was working before.

Many thanks in advance,

AJM

Moved to Server 2012 getting Access Database Corruption

We moved our company file shares to a new Windows 2012 server and are now having issues with Access databases becoming corrupted when accessed by multiple clients at the same time.  Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this?  We were not having any issues with this on the 2008 or 2003 servers these were on previously.

Folder Permission not working when enabling share option.

Hello,

Currently I am attempting to setup folder permission son Windows 2008 R x64 for my domain users.

The folder structure as follow:

Data

>Software

>Shared

>Archive

The “Shared” folder will hold department folders such as Accounting, Marketing, Engineering, Manufacturing…etc. So not all user will require access to all folders.

I opened properties for Data>Security tab and granted Domain Admins full access. Next I checked each of the sub folders (Software, Shared, Archive) and permissions have populated correctly.

I logged in as Domain Admin to a machine and when attempted to access \\fileserver\Shared\ I got “windows cannot access”…same error when using server IP address.

I opened the properties for “Shared” folder and enabled sharing via “Advanced Sharing”, removed “Everyone” and added “Domain Admins”. Logged as Domain Admin to a Windows 7 Pro machine and I am able to access the “Shared” folder, delete…etc. All Good so far.

The next step in the process is to give my domain users access to the “Shared” folder and certain sub folders depending on their permissions. We have security groups setup for each department and users are setup as required.

I logged in as regular user to Windows 7 Pro machine and attempted to access\\fileserver\Shared\ and got the message “windows cannot access….etc” and that is correct since no permissions have been granted yet to Domain Users.

I opened the properties for “Shared”, click on Security tab>Advanced>Permissions tab>Change Permissions>Add button and added “Domain Users” with the following permissions (Apply to: This folder only and Permissions: List Folder/ Read Data). I did a logoff and logged in again as a user and when attempted to access \\fileserver\Shared\ I still got the message “windows cannot access…etc”. Next, I opened the properties for “Shared” folder, clicked on the Sharing tab>Advanced Sharing and added “Domain Users” with read only permission. I did a logoff and logged in again as a user and when I attempted to open \\fileserver\Shared| I was able to do so. MY ISSUE…is that when I am logged as a user I can open all sub folders and files under “Shared” even when the “Domain Users” group is not listed in the Security tab for each of the sub folders and files in the “Shared” folder. I would like to all “Domain Users” to gain access to the top level “Shared” folder but when they click on sub folders they will get error message “access is denied” if they are not part of security group for each sub folder. It seemed the sharing permission gave “Domain Users” access to read all contents of the “Shared” folder.

Maybe my knowledge of permissions is not up to date.J and sorry for long message but I wanted to give as much details as possible.

Thanks….B

Robocopy Switches

Hello,

I need to move a single file share off of one server and onto another so I was going to use robocopy to do so.  However, I have completely confused with the amount of switches and don't know what the proper ones to use.  Both servers in question are running Windows Server 2008 R2.  I just need all of the sharing and security permissions to remain the same.

Data Deduplication service detected corruption in "{filename}". And other errors. How to fix?

Hi!

I reviewed logs in Event Viewer\Applications and Services Logs\Microsoft\Windows\Deduplication\Scrubbing and found lot of events with Error level.

I am using Windows 2012 (Version 6.2.9200 Build 9200)
How to resolve this errors? Why they happened? How to prevent deduplication errors in future?

Thank you.

Adding a DFS Namespace on Windows 2012 produces an error

$

I have a very small lab environment with a 2012 AD server and two 2012 clients which I am testing DFSR before placing into production.

I can't seem to get a Namespace created.

Regardless if which host I try to create it on, I get the following error:

\\domain\shared: The namespace server \\hostname\shared cannot be added.  The user name or password is incorrect.

The wizard does not ask for a username or password.

I am logged in with the domain\administrator account.

The share does get created.  I have given Everyone and domain\Administrator  full control.

I am stumped and am looking for direction.

Server 2012 Shares

Hi Microsoft community!

I hope you can help me with an issue...

I have a machine called \\shares\

There are two drives on it, the "Local Disk (C:)" and the drive I want to put the shared resources on "Shares (S:)"

This is a brand-new Server 2012, and I have a test folder located within the S: drive on which I have enabled sharing for Everyone, and also specifically for myself:

This machine is on the correct domain, along with the machine I am trying to share resources with (my account)

I have also set the NTFS permissions to give my account full control:

Here's the weird issue: When I create a shared folder in the C: drive in this manner all shared machines can access it. When I create a folder in the S: drive, I get a permission denied error:

You do not have permission to access \\shares\Test2. Contact your network administrator to request access.

I cannot figure out why I can't access this share! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

DFS Replication between two servers

$

Hi,

I have specific task and I think DFS replication would be perfect solution. But not sure how to adjust it to specific needs.

I have 2 servers ServerA and ServerB which are both member servers. On both servers there is an application installed.

Now ServerA is primary server for this application and ServerB is cold server that just seats there in case that ServerA is down. What is important in this scenario that there is only one folder named Jobs that these two servers need to replicate. Users are not concerned about this they only need their application running.

So what I would like to do is to setup DFS replication between ServerA and ServerB. I dont think I need namespace since users will never see this folder it is application specific.

How would I set up this scenario. I know I have to install DFS replication service on both servers and then what.

Most people suggest name space and I am wondering do I need that. All I need is that folder named Jobs is replicated between ServerA and ServerB. If i can avoid creating third folder on the storage I would like to do that otherwise application may crash.

Is it possible to setup replication between ServerA and ServerB. For example both servers should replicate F:\AppServer\Jobs folder. These folders exist on both servers at the moment and on ServerA users are making changes which should replicate to ServerB in the same folder

Just as a note: These servers are in the same subnet and replication will not take place over WAN.

I tried to search on google but some just keep saying users users users.

This is not concerning users at all it is just to replicate two folders between two servers

Is this doable

We have an odd issue which has recently started. We have 4 offices connected using DFSR replicating 1,300,000 files. We recently replaced 2 older servers with 2012 standard boxes with two other 2003r2 servers still in place. Everything has worked for 1-2 months however in the last week every night the DFS decides to run some kind of consistency check and I will see a backlog of 1,300,000 files waiting to go from one server to all of the others. The backlog appears every night at 1AM.

So far I have:

Disabled Sophos on the member that generates the backlog

Backup finishes by 21.30

Nothing in the event viewer around this time

No server reboots or updates during this time.

Checking the debug logs, at midnight we start to generate approx 26 debug logs per minute (so I am assuming this is when it starts)

Below is the last log entry before it starts flooding the log with the RefreshRecord entries:

Folder redirection not going though for Server 2008

Hi everyone,

We are currently doing a user migration at my company and the folder redirection to desktop is not kicking in as quickly as it should be. Here are some points I want to make:

  1. The group policy on the new domain has been set up to redirect to the proper locations.
  2. All accounts in the new domain have been prestaged prior to exchange mailbox disconnection.
  3. I do a gpupdate /force command and reboot with every user after mailboxes have been reconnected.
  4. I make sure the users and their computers are in the proper OUs before the gpupdate /force.

I know that group policy usually refreshes about every 15 minutes or so but this issue of icons not showing up on users desktops is slightly annoying. It does eventually go though but it’s been taking DAYS.  My band-aid solution to this has been to simply create a shortcut icon to the user’s respective redirected folder. I have also instructed the user NOT to save anything on their desktop for the time being because once the folder redirection occurs, it will blow away anything that was saved to desktop. Finally, I want to add that old domain can be best described as a tangled mess hence the reason why we are doing the migration in the first place. Anyone have any thoughts?

Wierd error when trying to delete , rename or move folder

Dear all,

I have a SERVER 2008 R on which I have configured different drive mapping.

I have then create a group name MARKETTING_USERS where all people inside have full control of the Marketting mapping drive.

What is happening is I get often an error  as shown below when trying to move or delete a folder and I cross check that group as full control:

Then to make it work I wait for1 or 2 minutes and then retry and then it goes ok, or sometimes I need to empty sub folders before beeing able to delete parent folder.

An other case is when I try to rename a folder I get the follwing message BUT the folder is only open by me trying to rename it:

I am sure no backup is running and no people are connected.

Any idea what it could cause that behaviour ?

regards

Establishing a software RAID5 with Diskpart seems to take DAYS with no end in sight - what gives?

I'm playing around with Server 2008 on a box that previously had a 8 disk x 500GB software RAID5 configured under Linux (Linux was installed on a USB Flash stick).
Well aware that I cannot install Server 2008 on a Flash stick, I installed Server 2008 on disk 0, leaving disks 1 through 7 for the software RAID5.

I configured the RAID5 via Diskpart, everything SEEMED to go well but:
When I type "LIST VOLUME", the RAID5 volume continues to show its status as "REBUILD" not as "HEALTHY".
It has been like that for days now.
While I understand that initializing a 3TB-size RAID5 array may take a few hours, or even a night, or even a day (as in: 24 hours), LIST VOLUME continues to show "REBUILD" after several days now.

Is there some guideline as to how long it is supposed to take?
For instance, "allow 10 hours per terabyte" would be a great guidance.
Or: "Multiply the number of physical disks by the number of terabytes and the resulting number is the number of days it will approximately take".
By the way, the eight disks (seven in the RAID5) are normal WD 500GB SATA disks.
All the while, the CPU load on the server is 0%, which begs the question: Is the RAID5 creation going on at all?

Large file upload with PHP on Windows server 2008 r2

Hi, I've been working on a PHP upload system, i currently have one working, but I'm struggling when it comes to large files. I've tested up to 47mb, this works just fine however when i try uploading a file of about 72mb i get an error.

Now i've been doing a lot of research around the internet to try and find out what settings i need to be changing, on various websites i've been told different things, change settings in the php.ini file, change web.config settings and so on. Each web site i find help on seems to have one or two things different from the last so it seems implossible to find a full list of settings that need to be changed or checked when developing a system that needs to upload large files.

So the main question here is does anyone have a list of settings (PHP and Windows Server settings) that need to be tweaked in order to do this? That would be a HUGE help for me and i'm sure thousands of people after me.

Secondly, i have changed a number of settings and can now upload up to about 47mb. But like i said with a 72mb file, the server comes back with a 500 error. Does anyone have any idea what the problem can be?

here are some of the settings that i think you would need to see:

php.ini

  • upload_max_filesize: 200M
  • post_max_size: 200M
  • memory_limit: 200M
  • max_file_uploads: 20
  • max_execution_time: 3600
  • max_input_time: 3600
  • file_uploads: 1
  • default_socket_timeout: 3600

Windows settings

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<configuration>
<system.web>
      <httpRuntime maxRequestLength="120000000" executionTimeout="3600" />
   </system.web>
<system.webServer>
<security>
<requestFiltering>
<requestLimits maxAllowedContentLength="120000000"/>
</requestFiltering>
</security>
</system.webServer>
</configuration>

i'm not sure if this error is being of execution time or is it's a cap somewhere on the amount of data..... Is there a way of me outputting the values of some of the windows server settings?

Thanks for the help.

How to remove full control from users redirected documents folder?

Hi,

I'm migrating our users from Windows XP to Windows 7 at the same time changing the mapping of their Documents folder from a Windows 2003 server to a Windows 2008 R2 server.  I've noticed that on the new server the users get Full Controll over their Documents folder.  This is an issue for us because we've had users block the Administrators from their files, which isn't appropriate.

I'm more familiar with Windows XP/2003 secruity structures, how can I remove the Full Controll right on these folders in 2008 R2?  A step-by-step procedure or direction to a tutorial would be great.

Thanks in advance,

Linn

Folder security tab

We have a small domain here with a file server. no users here are on the domain. i have permissions set up for each folder for the users to use, but an issue i see is people can still see the security tab and edit it. if they try to edit it it says access is denied, but it still goes through after its closed out. i was able to get the security tab blocked, but then no one had permissions to R/W in their folders. any help would be great

thanks,

DFSR Propagation Tests Fail

I run propagation tests/reports from  each DFSR servers once a week to insure the health of our DFSR environment.  Recently the propagation reports keep coming back with errors, and it's the same error and server causing them on every report.  That server name is FILE1.  All propagation tests are initiated from FILE1, but they aren't all tests of FILE1.  If the propagation test is for FILE1, I don't get any errors.  If the report is for another server, it always comes back with the error below.

Error: Member File1.domain.local : Cannot read values from WMI provider on the member. WMI query Select * from DfsrIdRecordInfo where ReplicatedFolderGuid = "05662022-3646-4AB5-A15D-C1A26A027C69" AND Fid = 562949953427650 failed. Not found (Error code 0x80041002)

Windows 2008r2 cluster and NetApp OnTapp 8.0.5

I thought I'd post it here as it is somewhat undocumented bug (I susspect) with NetApp and affects only clustered servers:

Analysis of the outage after NetApp upgrade to OnTap version 8.0.5

Symptom:

Clustered disk on SQL08 were not accessible through either cluster node. This happened after the upgrade of NetApp OnTap from 7.3.5 to 8.0.5

Environment:

HP Proliant DL380 G6 servers (2 local disks for OS)

Storage NetApp V3140 series (3 disks presented to cluster nodes)

Windows 2008r2 Server Enterprise no service packs

SQL 2008 cluster

NetApp windows host utility ver. 5.3

NetApp DSM (MPIO) ver. 3.3

Impact:

SQL server not accessible, following applications impacted: various applications

Detailed description of the problem:

Both SQL cluster nodes (SQL3 and SQL4) had clustered disks presented but not accessible. All three disks (Quorum, T-Log, SQL Data) were visible in the disk management on both nodes, however they were in “Offline state” with the message “The disk is offline because of a policy set by the administrator reserved”

Problem resolution:

Following steps were performed in attempt to rectify this issue:

  1. Use “DISK PART” utility to identify disks
    1. Disks 1-3 (SAN attached disks were reported to be in “Reserved” state)
  2. Running “Cluster node <node name> /clearpr:<DiskNumber” although reported to be successful did not change status of the disks from “Reserved” to “Online”
  3. NetApp support was contacted and following steps were performed on the controller:
    1. Take PRDSQL08 volume off line and bringing it back online – did not bring clustered disks online
    2. Take LUN’s associated with SQL cluster off line and bringing them back online – did not bring clustered disks online
  4. Microsoft support contacted as per NetApp support suggestion
  5. Following steps were performed on cluster nodes by Microsoft support - unsuccessfully:
    1. Cluster node <node name> /clearpr:<DiskNumber” although reported to be successful did not change status of the disks from “Reserved” to “Online”
    2. Trying to bring resources on-line through cluster manager
    3. Removing disks from cluster manager and re-adding the same back
    4. Running “Validation report” from within cluster manager
  6. Conferenced Microsoft and NetApp to work on resolution
  7. Microsoft engineer reported to NetApp that the issue is with the storage based on the following error recorded by “Validation Report”: “Cluster Disk 0 does not support Persistent Reservations. Some storage devices require specific firmware versions or settings to function properly with failover clusters. Please contact your storage administrator or storage vendor to check the configuration of the storage to allow it to function properly with failover clusters.”
  8. NetApp engineer suggested we upgrade NetApp host utilities to 6.1 and NetApp DSM utility 3.5
    1. Pre-requisites for the two utilities are:
      1. Microsoft Q2522766
      2. Microsoft Q2528357
      3. Microsoft Q979711
      4. Microsoft Q981379
  9. Installing NetApp host utilities ver 6.1 and NetApp DSM utility ver 3.5 resolved the issue

Root cause analysis:

It appears that this particular issue is a bug within DSM utility ver 3.3 that affects only clustered servers. Cluster servers require reservation on the disk which is not possible using this version of DSM. Prior to this upgrade this particular issue wasn’t documented bug with the NetApp.
